Venice Beach, CA
« on: December 04, 2006, 06:59:09 PM »
I was able to get free airfare recently to anywhere in the U.S.  I've always wanted to go to Venice Beach, for obvious reasons.  Can anyone share an experience they may have had or suggest the best time of year to go there.  Thanks for any advice.

Great place; has to be seen once, at least for a few days including a weekend. For the best weather, avoid Dec.-March. It may not be what some remember but without being able to compare with what was, there's still plenty of BB artifacts.

Train at Gold's, walk by the old Gold's, spend a Saturday and/or Sunday on Venice Beach including the outdoor pit, go to the Firehouse. Stop by Schatzi. Walk through the canal off the beach where Morrison used to live.

Then there are all the LA things if you still have time after that. There are inexpensive hotels right in Venice.

There really isn't enough in Venice to make a trip cross country for.  But Venice is part of LA, and there is lots to do in LA.

While December through March is our rainy season, we get on average 11 inches a year, so the odds of it raining during your trip is low.  While in the winter it can drop into the 40s at night, it can be 80 degrees any day of the year.  The worst time to go to the beach is June, as that is when we're likely to be fogged in (it's called June gloom).   The first part of Sept is when it usually hits 104.

As far as Venice, it's all gentrified.  All the cheap apartments have been replaced with million dollar condos.  Struggling bodybuilders can no longer afford to live there.  Plus there are hard core gyms pretty much everywhere now.

You can eat at the Firehouse, where scores of bodybuilders have eaten time and time again. While they have a huge regular menu, it is the bodybuilder's part of the menu that people come for. Most don't actually eat in the Firehouse area, but in the patio, or right next to the patio, where at one time, that was the place to eat.  Just this past Saturday, Quincy Taylor and his girl went to eat there for breakfast/lunch before going to the NPC Excalibur.

Right behind the Firehouse on the next street over his Max Muscle Venice, where Dave is usually lounging away. About a block away from their is Gold's of Venice, and it is worth just talking a look, for at one time, many of the bodybuilders trained here (Note - this isnt the original Gold's of Venice).

On weekends, it is fun to walk on the boardwalk, checking out Muscle Beach of Venice, and also - lots of entertaining and colorful stores around there.

But like they said, this is Los Angeles - there is lots to see and do here.

I've lived here and trained at gold's for over three years now

it really isn't that special

i mean, if you were already in the area, i could see why you'd want to stop by

however, i wouldn't make a trip just for that

Well a week before the Olympia at Golds Venice Jim Quinn witnessed Flex Wheeler get his bodyfat measured at an astounding 0.0% by Billy Smith, he later announced this on the live broadcast of the Olympia on ESPN.

The two places you've gotta check out, no ifs, ands, or buts, is Gold's Gym/Venice and the Venice boardwalk.  8)

Stay in Santa Monica if you can.  You can jog down the beach to Venice, Venice is a dump, you don't want to be stuck there.  There are cheap hotels in Santa Monica at smaller places.  You can go anytime of the year and its usually nice.  Don't go in June cause it is overcast at the beach everyday with fog.  august is good, and Even Christmas  time is nice, a little cooler.  Golds is open Xmas day!
Most are all show no go!

Yes and the Santa Monica Promenade too.  There are hot chicks everywhere on the Promenade.  Especially in the summer and at Christmas.

It's awesome. The best part is you don't even have to use the freeway to get from LAX to Venice.  At any time you can go into Gold's  and see famous bodybuilders or photo shoots that are going on.  The guys at the front desk are cool about letting you take a quick walk around.  It is expensive for a one day pass but worth it.  Last time I went I saw Lee Priest , who is hell-a short, some big Canadian fuck who was bigger than everyone there, lots of hot pussy, this cute fitness broad Jamie Eason.  She was hot too bad she's 4'10" lol.

Of course go to max muscle, go to the firehouse.

I joined a pickup game of Basketball on the boardwalk and even got interviewed by some show on Comedy Central on wether I wear boxers or briefs, so on the spot I dropped my pants to show them.  The host chick loved it.  The place is a blast.  While you're in LA do the rest, go to Hollywood, visit Universal, take a walk down Rodeo and start search.  LA is da bomb

Misinformation. There are a number of decent inexpensive hotels right off Venice Beach that i've stayed at. Venice is not a dump, no.

Anyone who hasn't been to Venice and LA, a trip is well worth it.

Good point; close to Venice and worth a walk over to see as well.

Sounds like you know very much about the bodybuilding spots but have yet to show signs of interest to step into a gym and actually lift a weight, typical american.
just push some weight!

It's great; i'll bet even Stallone likes it. Skating & drumming are two of the best things about it. The drum parties on the beach continue on after dark.
