;D Thanks 240.. I really tried to buy things that I've never seen and I know NOBODY has.. Example: A pullover bench or a dumbbell row bench.. Only thing is you gotta keep showing people how to use things like this all the time..
-
monster arms!
but i guess you know that, given your username ;D

Some Nebula pics.. ;D
the second pic is just plain stupid. who's the clown that reckons putting more small diameter plates on some dumb-bells is smart.
1. your entire range of motion is severely reduced
2. they are unweildy and hard to store/stack.
3. they look completely ridiculous.
4. they offer no real mechanical advantage over a machine or even a plain ol flat bench.
5. they need special elongated bars to hold the extra plates and therefore are not really ''adjustable''.
financially, mechanically, and practically those DB's are an abolute BB mong's idea. no thought whatso ever beyond..hey if you can do 8 plates ill put 55 plats on one and do it!....grunt grunt grunt..

you guys are missing the point on the dumb-bells, I am guessing that they are more of a converation piece and to attract attention. Also to convey a message "we are hardcode". This a new gym and he will need as much attention as possible to attract new clients.
Armz, the juice bar should bring in a fortune. $7+ for a protein shake that they could make at home for $1 is great.
where is the gym located?
-
hahahahaha, 7 dollar protein shake, if someone tried to charge me that i'd laugh and tell them to stick it up their ass.

sarcasm, you are not the target demographic.
18 y/o Billy that still believe that Cell Tech is what made Jay the current Mr. O will buy it.
lol, or the mom with 2 kids that is still carrying that extra fat from giving birth 10 years will buy it.
or the middle age guy with an ever expanding gut will always buy the "Cutting Shake with extra green tea extract"
-
I will stop by your gym arms and test your dumbells for incline dumbell presses. 8)

those are probably 300lb dumbbells at about 4 feet lonf each. i sincerely doubt anyone is going to be doing typical dumbbell work with those....
more of a decoration than anything

relax people the dumbbells are a novelty...

I met a guy last night at a Christmas party who said he just joined, he said it was a nice gym!

lol...ok cool....
but really it screams ''stupid'' to me...not hardcore.
hardcore might be the same set with larger diameter bells, or super dense material (i.e. lead core bells with chrome cans).
maybe even, if they are just for display, have them made out of wood and paint them up like they are real.
even better you could claim the heaviest pair of dumb bells around and have them in the middle of the gym and they are really just welded to the ground....man that'd keep em guessing...kinda like the sword in the stone- he who can move them becomes king of the land.

The rate is only good if you can figure that out ;D

Congrats & best of luck to you Armz!

So far so good.. I've looked into it and as I can see Powerhouse is the best overall and lowest fees.. I think that's why Bev changed over, just a guess..

Gyms in Sydney usually charge at least $49/month. We charge more than that. No way anyone here could survive if the fees were a give away. Do gyms there really expect to get thousands of members signing up?

Yes they do and they do. Even here in Hawaii. The major gym here charges $1,200 per year PIF or $295 down and $89 a month. The main 24 hour fitness on Oahu has 13,000 members. Their are 7 24 Hour Fitness gyms here and all total they have around 30,000+ members I think. Clubs on the mainland easily get 2000+ members or they don't survive. Vegas clubs kick ass too. Las Vegas Athletic Club is like $19 a month. And they have multi million dollar clubs.

Suppose a gym charges $15/Month and the club has 3000 paying members. That is $45,000/month and $540,000/year income. That is not going to return a profit if you have a large club with high overheads. It might sound easy to get that many members paying each month but that is a lot of people to sign up. Rents are high, you need staff, gyms are open for long periods each day and so on. Gyms are a high cost, low return business.
Now suppose that a gym has 2000 members and they are paying $59/month each. That brings in $1.4 million and that will return a good profit. I can tell you that is a lot of members to get.

vince, planet fitness gyms get 5000-8000 members into a medium sized gym with only cardio and basic strength training equipment - some of them have refurbished equipment too.
no aerobics, no child care, no frills which people are fine with @ $15 per month.
only 20% of the members tend to use the place often but most members stay as members for 2 years average since the hit each month is so minimal.
the staffing levels are very low. 1-2 people there at once.
at this price you get up to 25% of the population within 5 miles joining these places instead of the usual 8-10%.
they make money with less headaches for the owners trust me...

Not many gyms charge $15 or $20. But a case in point would be the Las Vegas Athletic Club. There membership is $19 a month. There clubs have everything. Tennis Courts, Racquetball, swimming, full gym, locker rooms etc. But then they have 15,000+ members. 24 Hour Fitness in Honolulu has over 13,000 member paying around $39 or so a month. Not many gyms survive with just 2000 members. The two gym here are an exception to the rule (which there are many) the major club here is 26,000 sq. ft. they have 1800 members. Monthly dues are $69. PIF is now $1,200 a year. The other gym has about 2000 members paying $39 a month average. The monthly net at that gym when I had it was $15,000 to $20,000 a month.
Gyms are very big money makers if you know how to make money. There are allot of ancillary centers in the gym including Personal Training, Rehab (which is huge at my gym making clsoe to $25,000 a month), Pro shop, cafe, drinks, pro shop, childcare, spinning, etc.
Really depends on the market. Here in Hawaii it is totally dfferent. Every equipment salesman that comes here and meets me says after the first day "this place is so different". It is. SO really you need to look at your market. Gym can be money makers if done right. First thing is to make sure your rent is as low as possible. And if opeing a new gym make sure you get at least 6 months free rent. This will help you build a clientle. And make sure you have an escalated rent schedule for the for year or two. Once you make it past the first couple years you should be okay.

I have been in the gym business in Australia for over 35 years and it is harder to make money now than in the past decades. New chains have opened and they have reasonable equipment and sales staff. The public are getting better gyms than they did in the past. It just seems that the pie is getting cut up into smaller portions each year. We have a large gym with heaps and heaps of equipment, aerobics, and childminding. We are also air conditioned and open long hours. In the new year we will add a ladies only circuit and a boxing area.

that number of members would require a really big gym i imagine.

yeah but vince you gotta spend some fvcking money on your cardio dude... you need 20 treads minimum now and about the same crosstrainers...

Having your gym known as HARD CORE is certainly not the way to a huge client base. You have to base it more on family and womens needs, thats where the cash comes in, not from the local bodybuilding knuckleheads, they alone will not keep your gym afloat.
Congrats though, looks nice, so does cathy.

You gotta love those dumbbells. Congrats again Armz!

anybody rep those monter 375lbs dumbells yet? I'll join that gym if anybody dare repping those pairs of badass dumbells

Vince, I see the Fitness First (our very own version of Planet Fitness) opening up left/right & centre. Where do you advertise (besides yellow pages)?
fitness first are VERY different than planet fitness business model wise...
ff are a total service provider (aerobics/spin/cardio/weights/childcare/rehab etc) whereas planet fitness is no frills weights and cardio only.
now, ff may still be cheap in some places but that will only be until they squeeze the mum and dad owned gyms out of their markets by undercutting them.
once they have control in certain areas expect them to be up around $100 per month.
that is their long term plan and their sydney CBD gyms are financing it because most of their suburban gyms are losing money...
-

How about having a hardcore gym and family friendly too.. Just don't put the cardio machines anywhere near the freeweights. If you lose a crybaby once a month 'cause a big guy scared an older lady then oh well. you've just signed up about 100 members and lost one.. 20% of the 100 members are the "Hardcore" crowed..

It's a vertical leg press.. By Nebula ;D A must in any gym..

I paid for everything cash.. All my own money.. Zero loans.. But thanks for having faith..

Totally agree! I had to take a second look cos I wasnt really sure what they were at first! Could you imagine trying to lift those and balance on a bench ha ha!!! I wish I was a member I would love to see how many people fell off in one day! A lot of bruised egos soon in that gym.

This is what is killing most of the real gyms out there. These gyms have a 2-5 year lifespan and usually don't last long, you just have to have a strong enough business model to "weather the storm."

Fitness First is popping up every where in Adelaide. I joined a few months ago as its just down the road from work. I'm paying $35 per fortnight... they still sign members even though people have to wait for the treadmills etc... absolute joke! fortunately I dont do cardio 8)
-
Armz, the gym looks good. I'll rep out some concentration curls with those 375's for you the next time im in the states.
-
Gym looks great!!
i wish you much success my friend
-
I like those 375s. You could have a running contest: whoever can stand up with those, no straps, gets a lifetime membership.
At least have a Wall of Fame with pictures of people who can do SOMETHING with those things.
-
I paid for everything cash.. All my own money.. Zero loans.. But thanks for having faith..
Well done! ---- That is the way to do it. I hope the gym really takes off for you guys --- Good luck, and those dumbells will certainly draw attention. I disagree with people saying that a "Hard Core" gym with the name or not will not make it. I think there are too many mediocre gyms around that "only" cater for mediocre people. There are not very many "real" gyms around anymore. I think Fitness First is a money spinning glamourised pick up joint. IMO only of course. But I know that I have some big male bodybuilder friends and they will travel distances just to go to a good hard core gym and get a good hard core workout with no crap! Good on you!!
