Title: Is it me or does the NBA remind you of the ghetto?
Post by: Cap on December 17, 2006, 10:49:04 AM
I can't believe these brawls and all this stupid shit.  It's funny that these guys think they are still out on the court back in the hood.  It's ridiculous.  You can take the thug out of the hood but not the hood out of the thug I guess.  Oh another thing, will these pussies learn how to throw a punch for God sake?

I want to know why this is just fine in hockey yet a big deal in the NBA when it happens even once a year? Not that important, maybe even livens up the game.

UMass students riot following lossPosted: Saturday December 16, 2006 5:45PM; Updated: Saturday December 16, 2006 5:46PM

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- University of Massachusetts officials promised "swift disciplinary action" against students who rioted after the football team lost the Division I-AA championship game.

Eleven people, including 10 students, were arrested and two UMass police officers sustained minor injuries in the melee, in which students lit small fires, smashed windows and threw bottles, cans, rocks and even bicycles at police, according to campus spokesman Ed Blaguszewski.

The rioting began after about 1,800 students surged onto a plaza in a southwest residential area of campus late Friday, shortly after UMass lost 28-17 to Appalachian State in the championship game in Chattanooga, Tenn.

"I'm outraged and terribly disappointed in the students involved in this disturbance," said Michael Gargano, vice chancellor for student affairs and campus life. "This type of behavior hurts the majority of our students who are studying and preparing for final exams and are at the university for all the right reasons."

The cases against the arrested students will be reviewed early this week and any discipline will be handed down by week's end, Blaguszewski said. Punishment could include expulsion and loss of this semesters academic record, Gargano said.

About 60 officers, including UMass, state and Amherst police, responded in riot gear. They used pepper ball, sting ball, flash bangs and smoke to eventually disperse the crowd, Blaguszewski said.

"Students were throwing trash cans and breaking windows and the riot squad came, and they were throwing tear gas and shooting pellets at the crowd," student Dan Nguyen told The Boston Globe. "It was pretty crazy."

The university said a damage estimate wouldn't be available until early next week.

The arrested students face charges of disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. UMass police chief Barbara O'Connor said more people could be charged or disciplined after a review of security camera video and swipe card data, which shows who went in and out of nearby residence halls.

Hockey expects it and has penalties built into the game for it, basketball doesn't.  Hockey needs it because of lower popularity and if I got paid as little as they did I would beat people up too.  Basketball players are very highly paid but still can't act civilized.

i LOVE hockey. and IMO the reason fighting is moderately allowed is that in hockey every player has their own weapon(hockey stick) and there is a solid wall surrounding them. fighting gives them a controlled outlet so they dont start swinging sticks at each others head or ramming someone head first into the board skating at high speeds.

and its not really allowed. you are given a 5 minute penalty...at least. possibly 2 more if you are considered the instigator...tossed from the game if you are the 3rd person into the fight.......more than one game suspension if you leave the bench to go fight, and various other penalties.

So, the other sports (yes even the NFL) aren't as ghetto as the NBA and the entire team doesn't fight.  Have you ever seen an entire baseball or hockey team go into the stands and beat the shit out of spectators?  If anything, the NFL is the most civilized when it comes to this shit.  Go figure.

The NBA players are more pamered when it comes to salary, perks and less control from the coaches than football.

I really don't mind the violence; the NBA's boring.

I agree.  I don't like fans being attacked.  If I was at the game where fans were attacked and some skinny bastard stood toe to toe with me I'd choke his ass out and make him shit his pants, that would be a good photo op.  ;D

in football they get hit by thrown objects all the time but since theya re well protected with pads they don't feel the need to react

and it only happned in the nba twice...

Not really. Drunken college students getting fired up is not exactly a rare occurrence. I have seen riots at other schools over far less then your team losing a championship football game. Not to mention, 35 thousand plus students go to UMASS. The riot involved a tiny percent of the student body ;)

Basketball sucks imo. Boring to watch. There is a foul every 2 seconds or so. The players all think they are gangsters and ruin any credibility the game once had.

NBA is fucking horrible. 6'10" small forwards who shoot .625% from the free throw line but still chuck three pointers. Stupid.

Barely anyone plays defense, no one hits the glass hard for rebounds.(no one has to when you got 7 feet monkeys clanking three pointers off the back iron and the ball ricochets to the fucking point guard.)

Late '80's and early to mid 90's were the NBA's glory years. Very fun to watch those battles between Jordan's Bulls versus the Knicks and Pistons. Celtics versus Lakers. Awesome stuff back then.

Today's NBA is a joke, plain and simple.

I get a lot of perks from my job and I sometimes attend Washington Wizards games in the suite box level. There's a fucking turntable deck with a DJ mixing beats in the corner of the basketball court while the game is playing! I shit you not. Nothing but rap music throughout the entire game with no traditional upbeat shit to get the crowd into it.

Shit sucks, man.

That is hilarious!  I'm surprised there was not a "mc" spitting some "ill shit" during timeouts. The Celtics fucking suck and no one cares here. Which says a lot in a mega sports town like Boston. They where the greatest franchise in NBA history back in the day. Everyone was sad when red died, but basketball is struggling here now. Seems that way in most all towns. Unless you live in San Antonio, Dallas or Miami. I am sure there are more I just do not give a crap.

Remember, Carmello was still running with his thug posse as recently as a year ago (haven't heard anything about him and his 'boys' this season) and so in his mind, he had to get out there and throw a punch, lest his boys declare him 'soft'.  But after he did it, he realized he was in the wrong AND that he was about to get his butt whipped, so he took off, hoping that Big Daddy Stern didn't see him sucker punch the guy.

Oops.

It sucks because they reward players for mediocre performance. The give millions of dollars to guys who have not proven themselves, yet demand money. It is all about the money, it is good to be a NBA agent these days :-\.

There is no passion for the game these days. There is no love, like Jordan had. Hell I thought Allen Iverson was gonna be THE ONE, but his sorry ass doesn't want to practice, he is nothing but a thug who plays ball.
SO The fuq what he went to Georgetown. I remember, he came to my college and was watching the intermerals, he was amazed at the talent, gave someone his Georgetown jersey and rolled. We were in awe...until we saw the Truth, he was not the Answer.

Are you guys insinuating the nba punishing men for fighting in a basketball game is race driven? If white  NBA players behaved the way Mello and crew did, they would get the exact same treatment. Actually one of the guys ejected and suspended was white. All he did was try to break up the fight. Never threw a punch or talked a line of shit to anyone. Unfair? You're beef is with the NBA rules. The race of the players has nothing to do with it.

Btw, hockey is a contact sport and fighting has been part of the game since day one. Fighting and checking has never been a part of the NBA. Basketball has never been a full contact sport, and if fighting was a part of the game ( like in hockey) they prob would not penalize it. There are fouls every three seconds in a basketball game. Ob fighting will not be tolerated.

You are acting like fighting/comtact has not been a part of the game of hockey since it was started ::)

Tell that to those who have been the recipants of elbows from Bill Cartwright or Akem Olejuwan (sp). Broken eye orbits. Or the Bulls v. Knicks series. That was almost outright combat.
And then Shaq v. The Worm..good lord.

Hockey is a full contact sport. You are speaking about players hitting each other in a sport that is not full contact.  I agree basketball platers take shots, but it not the same as a sport where contact (hitting, checking) is within the rules.

the spurs are known for their defensive capabilities but their offense is just as good. parker is the fastest player in the nba and routinely has the highest fg % of any guard due to his ability to burn the shit out of every big man and score in the paint.
and then theres ginobili, the most unpredictable, physically talented non-black dude in nba history. did u see the last game? have u sen any games? that guy is among the most offensively entertaining guys in the nba right now.
over the couple weeks we have beaten our opponents by an average of 17ppg, we have the best record in the nba, we have the 3rd highest winning percentage of ANY PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM over the last decade, all of our players are always of the highest class, the spurs are and have been for a long time the most respectable, successful sports franchises in the world.

over the couple weeks we have beaten our opponents by an average of 17ppg, we have the best record in the nba, we have the 3rd highest winning percentage of ANY PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM over the last decade, all of our players are always of the highest class, the spurs are and have been for a long time the most respectable, successful sports franchises in the world.
there can be no complains you bastard!!!!!

You are apparently the idiot. I was saying if the spurs where a shitty team with none of the accoliads you just mentioned no one would care about them like 80 percent of the other nba teams.

You know those loyal San Antonio sports fans ::)

Hockey expects it and has penalties built into the game for it, basketball doesn't.  Hockey needs it because of lower popularity and if I got paid as little as they did I would beat people up too.  Basketball players are very highly paid but still can't act civilized.

Cap, you have any idea what thes hockey players are making? They are making some serious coin. Contracts are guaranteed to unlike the NFL.

Carmelo was clearly a pussy in that fight.  He should get a fine for punches and a seperate fine for his display of faggotry.

He punched the guy then ran away.

Whoever's allowed him to continue this long in Knicks management's even more stupid if that's possible.

The Garden is empty some nights. Shit, I remember when you couldn't find a ticket.

My age old question- Could the Bulls teams of the 90's have beaten the great Laker and Celtics teams of the 1980's?

The NBA was cool in the back in the day. The 80's and the Jordan era was cool.  But, now all the players think they are thugs. Listen to to much 50 cent. Nba players are the ultimate posers.

Dear nba players,

You are making millions of dollars to play a game. Kids look up to you. You are not longer in the "hood". Just because you see things in a music video, it does not mean you have to live that lifestyle. You are not gangsters. Most of you attended college.

Thats why I mentioned his display of faggotry.

hard to compare it to baseball...when they play twice as many games a season, and sometimes 6 games a week

It's not THAT big of a problem. Second fight...
What made this worse the other time was that they were fighting with "fans". That was WAY out of line. This time it's just the players, which i can kinda understand.

I'm a bball player myself and sometimes shit gets rough. Especially if you have coaches/refs that are not in touch with the game. Still, it's no excuse.

The Hiphop-attitude is stupid anyway, but what can you do about it. Kids today love it, and most of these guys are on the same mental level as them so waddaya expect.

Mello looked like a lil bitch though, slaps a guy and then sprints straight to his locker screaming for his mommy.

Why is that tre? Hockey is like basketball with a stick on ice.

Hockey doesn't translate to TV that well.  As a result, it's tougher for the games to hold a TV audience than it is for sports like football or basketball.

I don't know where things stand right now, but before they went on strike, the NHL was as popular as it had ever been...and those idiots blew it, because they thought they should be paid as much as NFL players.

Oh, my bad. I thought you where referring to the skill level required to play the game. I agree with you. The only people who are loyal hockey fans are people who play/played the game.

Pretty cool to attend a game. But like you said, it is boring as shit to watch on tv.Hockey is to boring. Needs more scoring and less back and forth crap.

Baseball people, soccer players, and golfers will argue, but hockey requires more skill than any sport I've ever attempted.  (I actually consider baseball and golf to be 'games', but included them for the sake of discussion).  Ice skating isn't easy, but to do so while maintaining control of a puck with a curved stick at the same time gorillas are trying to make a billboard out of your ass...it's definitely the #1 skill sport out there.  Basketball doesn't even come close.

NO.

Hockey is hard as shit. You need extreme hand eye coordination to exel. You also have to be one hell of an athlete.

Football and Hockey are def the top two skill sports imo.

I'm not disputing that but I feel that football on the pro level requires a bit more physical skill, especially at the cornerback position. The body control where some of these guys contort their bodies in mid air to either defend against a pass or to catch is phenemonal.
