The one thing that seems to be bothering her the most is no more Prilosec OTC. The doc ok'ed Tums and she has been downing them about 3 per meal. At this point she hasnt gained a pound but shes hungry for everything ;D to bad for me, I'll just stick to chicken and salads for my meals  :'(.

True story - A woman takes her dog into the Vet and sees Lard Homo sitting there with his. When he asks her what's wrong, she says, "It's little Max - he keeps humping everything in sight. So I'm here to get him neutered" to which Lard Homo says, "Yeah, my 'big boy' here is doing the same thing too. But I'm not getting him neutered. I'm just getting his nails trimmed so he won't scratch me when he does it" hahahahahahaha

I agree, volume sucks, and doesn't work.

Thats why guys like Lee Priest, Vince Taylor, Paul Dillet, Sergio Oliva, Reg Park, Larry Scott, Serge Nubret, Lee Haney, Rich Gaspari, Shawn Ray, etc, never got anywhere.
Had they trained super-heavy, they might have achieved something(besides a career-ending injury), because its all about impressing others, not building the body, right?

Had Arnold S. actually trained heavy, and not done pussy volume training, maybe he would have achieved something, and been someone today. Like a champion bber, actor or governor. What did he win? Nothing I tell you, nothing. Why? Because volume doesnt work.

How long till Squadfarter asks me how my mom's doing, and that not everyone can be as huge as me ::)?

There's no point in BBing to do anything else that doesn't make you grow or scupt your body, IMO. Strength is relative, and you'll generally always be stronger than the average guy anyway, so what does a few pounds on the bench matter.

LOL read the first sentence of my comment. I'm talking about there's no sense in doing low reps all the time just for the sake of improving your strength if it's not actually helping you grow. That's if you want to grow. For me, personally, I like the fact of getting stronger, but I just want to grow. Strength is a byproduct.

Heavy is best if you want to grow. At the same time, you should cycle in a week on volume to keep the muscles confused. I normally do one week of volume every 5th week. Many of the volume only guys have already done years of heavy to get the size they need and they just "maintain" what they got. Or, they are on enough "supplements" so that even volume makes them grow. No one started out by doing volume and got big. Heavy is what got them big. The 160 pound guys in the gym doing volume will weigh 165 at the end of the year.

havent read all of the shit in this thread but its true you gotta get stronger to get considerably bigger....but you can still lift heavy and have high volume...volume baby..volume
also you need to lift with good form as some fucks dont understand ....but that cant be taken to far either...as sometimes it ok to cheat abit if you know what your doing,,depends on what exercise...
for example cheating on squats is a no no..but on biceps curls its ok if you do it a little bit

I agree  with "Heavy weights= Big muscles" basicaly. But It should be heavy FOR YOU.
Some people are stronger or tecnicaly better than you.
Daiki Kodama bench 270kg and waaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller than me.My max bench is only 160kg.

270kg....I cant even hold it and if i go down for 1 inch, it will crush my chest immdiately.

Title: Re: Heavy weights= Big muscles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: nukkaready on January 17, 2007, 10:22:37 AM
Stimulating muscle growth is not a matter of lifting heavy ass weights for a few hard reps but it is rather a matter of using enough tension over a long enough time and repeating this process. In plain words this means that muscle hypertrophy (the actual growth, thickening of existing muscle fibers) occurs most when you use 10-15 reps, with 12 being the ideal number. 12 reps equals a long enough time to impose the kind of tension your muscles need to respond with growth. This process needs to be repeated several times during your workout as repetitiveness is crucial.

What if you do 4-6 reps in a slow and controlled fashion, the negative being twice the time as the positive portion? the time under tension would be the same as 12 pumping reps correct? i have always responded the best to slow controlled reps in the 3-8 rep range.

6-10 reps strength

8-12 reps hypertrophy

Isn't the idea to continually give your body some type of stimulus which causes the body to respond and get bigger?  All this 2 reps for strength, 8 reps for power, 15 reps for atonement of sins is crap. If you bench 100 kgs for 6 then six moths later you do 125 for 6, you are going to be bigger. If you bench 100 for 15 and six months later you bench 125 for 15, you are going to be bigger.  People always try and make things more complicated than it needs to be. Lift, get stronger, get bigger.

weight and muscle size have very little correlation, unless you guys are talking about absolute strengtht, in wich case adipose tissue plays a much bigger role than actual muscle.

Powerlifter aren't necessarily big, neither are Olympic weighlifters, yet they are WAY, WAY, WAY stronger than most bodybuilders, especially sin roids.

Bodybuilders are predominantly type IA muscle fibers, those are the fibers that have the greatest hypertrophy potential, but do not contribute significantly to either explosive or absolute strength

Type IIB fibers, the ones displayed on sprinters and Olympicweightlifters, are responsible for strength.

There is a distinctive difference between bodybuilders and weightlifters: BODYBUILDERS FOCUS ON THEIR MUSCLES WHILE WORKING OUT WHEREAS WEIGHTLIFTERS FOCUS ON THE WEIGHT THEY USE. Do yourself a favor and re-read this statement. It is one of the most important rules you can ever come across as a bodybuilder. Focus on the muscle and forget the amount of weight you handle. Your muscle doesn't have a calculator. If the weight is too heavy and reps are too low you focus on the weight and not the muscle. CONTROLLED MUSCLE TRAINING is the key to growth in bodybuilding. On top of that muscular tension has to be long enough and needs to be repeated. That is why approx. 12 reps per set are ideal. A procedure that needs to be repeated several times during your workout fot adaption to occur. Focusing on the muscle rather than the weight will also prevent CNS burnout, a must for muscular gains.

What if you do 4-6 reps in a slow and controlled fashion, the negative being twice the time as the positive portion? the time under tension would be the same as 12 pumping reps correct? i have always responded the best to slow controlled reps in the 3-8 rep range.

8)

Frankly, I dont know the answer to this.

In regards to doing 12 reps I am not talking pump style reps but controlled reps at a steady pace with emphasizing the negative part of the rep by going slower and pushing up the weight with a normal speed. Going very slow or super slow to achieve the time period necessary for hypertrophy to be stimulated with just a few reps might do the job as well but I have my doubts. Never looked into this so I can't give you an answer.

Rule of thumb.....

3-5 reps power

6-10 reps strength

8-12 reps hypertrophy

power vs. strength? explain the difference please.

6 to 8 reps is best for strength and size.  Even 4 reps with real heavy weight is okay.  Having a couple spotters and doing 110% of your peak is also very good.  Doing negatives with help increase your tendon strength as does lowering the weight slowly when lifting heavy.  Gotta have strong tendons.

That's a VERY general rule of thumb that schmucks in the fitness industry will tell you.   You can get growth from low reps with heavy weight too, the key is to mix up the rep ranges/volume to keep the body from adapting to a set routine.

Title: Re: Heavy weights= Big muscles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What exactly is the difference between Power and Strength?

Strength refers to the maximum amount of force exerted on an object, i.e. one rep max.

Power, if referring to physics, means the amount of work done per unit time, or the rate of work done (P = W/t).  In exercise science, it means how fast you are able to move a resistance.  Inverse relationship between speed (velocity) and force.  Obviously the heavier the weight, the slower you're going to be able to move it.  You see a lot of powerlifters alternate with their "heavy" days and "speed" days.

Thats not true.  You can get stronger without getting bigger.  You can be 300 lbs. and bench 350 and drop your weight to 250 and bench 400.

Heavy weights=Big muscles

Big Muscles(growth, hypertrophy) are the result of direct stimulus, right? Now, does your muscle know wether you're going heavy or not? Or, will medium weight for higher reps cycled with heavy(for the individual)weight for lower reps not produce same stimulus?

Some people talking of what worked for them, and how they got big and strong, but was that powerlifter big, or bber big? You know the diff, one has a blob of size, the other shape.

No amount of training is going to change your God-given muscle shape. It is a physiological impossibility. I've done preacher curls and concentration curls for years, but my biceps still have terrible shape. I've done hack squats every other workout for the past decade, but my quads still have lackluster sweep despite measuring nearly 30" in circumference. Training for "shape" is simply the biggest scam in all of weight training. It's called GENETICS. If you aren't one of the people who was born with aesthetic muscles, you will NEVER look like a champion bodybuilder. There is really no way around it.

I understand your opinion, but I disagree. In my opinion we can grow and have good strength. I look at Pudzianowski as an example: Very fit, functional, big and strong! If he can do it so can we... Using the same training methods and use the same drugs (in less quantity because it is very expensive).

shadows you still in diapers?  ;D

and onlyme...i do know about working out..and the answer to this discussion is what bodybuilders are doing

reps 6-10  (but hey you can gain loads of mass by doing sets of 3 if you do enough sets) most of the time sometimes heavier to push strenght levels up (1-5 reps) and use high enough volume..sometimes higher reps..specially for legs..., dont go to failure too often....change your workout out every 4-8 weeks..its standard boring shit but it works ..this is for bodybuilding (and not primarily for building strength...but mass..but if you wanna get alot bigger you have to get alot stronger.....the correlation between strengh and size isnt 100% tho)...split the bodypart workouts in order to get high enough volume on each muscle. lift with good form..work the muclse not the ego. lift progressively heavier. things most people know...but they forget you can go far with a fucked up program if you work the program hard and believe in it..and in yourself..and have patience.

standard boring shit, but it takes time..some people dont have the patience and think just because they dont gain 5lbs of muscle a month something is wrong.....the thing thats wrong is their perception of what is possible...

I dont fully agree with this statement. maybe with correct form they do. i see so many wankers lifting heavy on the bench press trying to impress their buddies and i am heaps bigger than they are. I tried training with one of these guys once and we packed the weight on to the bar. All i can say is that after finishing 4 sets with bad form and cheating a fair bit to get the bar up i ended up with a great pump... in my bloody back... I said to the guy i am hear to pump my chest not my back.
I must say that i am one of the top 3 biggest guys in my gym but there are alot of guys that are stronger than me. Some people dont realise that i am in there to build muscle not to be strong. there is a world of difference.

Heh, yeah...exactly why I find it so amusing that the tiny guys, and the guys who don't dare post their picture, are the ones who doll out the most advice.

Like I posted before: when I go to the gym, I find the smallest guy there and ask him what he's doing to increase his strength and size. Cuz, you know, he'll have the most to say about it...

....In the same respect, you can be small and have a wealth of knowledge (not that these guys do by any stretch of the imagination). The person that I consider ONE of my mentors when it comes to athletic training looks like he hardly lifted a weight in his life, but his technical knowledge is amazing!

All Type A fibers unless you train for an endurance sport!

Disagree, doing very low weight, controlled and high repetition (30-40) IN ADDITION to moderate and heavy weight is the way to go.

Those high repetition sets have been shown in studies to help increase capilariztion (small blood vessels being formed) in sollicited muscle. In turn, those new vessels can help deliver nutrient and cleaning wastes in the muscles. It basically helps creating satellites cells around your muscle, hence helping hypertrophy.

And actualy, type A fibers are slow oxydating (endurance) fibers. What you would want is transform type IIB (fast twitch) into IIA (medium twitch) that have a greater potential for growth, but YOU WOULD LOSE POWER (A TYPE OF STRENGHT) IN THE PROCESS.

Fast twitch fibers are the strongest and fastest. Look at explosive sports like Football, Basketball, sprinting, etc. This is the fiber they build to give them that gets athletes quick and powerful strength. Since fast twitch is the strongest fiber, it has the shortest endurance. Fast twitch will exaust itself usually after about 30sec of continus contraction, then the medium will TAKE OVER not transform.....but you make a valad point!

I was not referring to actual muscle cells being converted while lifting though, I was saying that followin a typical bodybuilding protocol (medium volume, medium weight) a la Ronnie Coleman, some muscle fiber conversion (IIB to IIA) has been shown.

Glad to finally meet someone with more than to brain cells working together!

why is this even an issue?  I've been lifting along time and if there is one thing that I have learned is that heavy weights=big muscles.  Threre are alot of other variables out there but this is the constant.

In August last year I was in the middle of my first heavy cycle in 2 years and I f'n killed myself in the gym everyday.  3 Days after getting out of the hospital for diverticulitus I was in the gym putting up the 120's on the incline and busting my ass.  When the blast ended I'd put on 12lbs over the course of about 10-12 weeks, was it all muscle?  Don't know but what I do know is that all my pants fit my waist-legs were a little tighter.

Don't fool yourself.  Isolation movements are garbage IMO.  I did all this stimulate don't enialite training back in the early 90's until this guy came up to me asked me to work with him for a few weeks and lfit heavy and see what happens.  I put on more muscle in the time I trained with him than I had in the previous 5 years...

it ain't rocket science.

natural al, what was/ is your rep range?

most movements are done in the DC (rest pause) fashion...rep range for those movements in 12-15...you pick a weight where you fail at 8 reps take 20 12-15 seconds and go again, you should fail at 3-4 reps and take 12-15 seconds and go again, this time you should totally fail at 2-3 reps....I was getting 15-17 reps in this fashion with the 120's back then, I dont' do them amymore cause once I upped the weight to the 130's it was more of a bitch to get the weight into position than to do the movement.  DB's don't work all that great for DC.

If weights are "heavy" for you, you won't be able to do many reps with them, simple as that.

Exactly, Ronnie coleman does 10-12 reps on most of his sets, so that is medium weight FOR HIM, although it would be way beyon my strenght.

When he does 2 reps with 800 pounds in the squat, he does it for the show, and uses heavy weight, but normally he wouldn't do that kind of thing.

so Heavy weight = big muscles,

That`s was most people think. Heavy weight = low reps, light weights = high reps.....

But i know some people you can bench with 85 % of there max. for 8-10 reps, and others who only can do this 5-6 times (and the rep speed is equal). "Mind Power & goalsetting" plays a big role..."  "i will, i want, i can.."

But there`s also other options to do high reps with high weights, a Training system called Pitt,
you use a weight that you can normally lift or press for around 8 reps, "that`s a fairly heavy weight" (the stimulus/resistance). Now you start the "pitt-Set", doing 1 controlled rep, replace the weight for only 3-5 seconds, doing rep Nr. 2, replace for another 3-5 seconds, and so on, after rep 8-10, your rest between reps
will be around 8-10 seconds, after rep 15, maybe 12 seconds, and between the last 2-3 reps up to 15 seconds. Normally you can do in that fashion 15-20 reps with a heavy weight, and a big number of those reps "where close reps" near to faillure (but not reached faillure). With such a tactic your muscle has the chance to replace "metabolic waste" (lactic acid, ammoniak, ...) by a certain degree, and can restore a bit
of ATP. If your muscle is from the beginning up to the end of the set under tension that`s not possible, and faillure mostly occurrs because you can`t flex the muscle because he is full of waste products and can work
efficient.

Well i was going to counter with Forced reps like with a spotter. but yours sounds better

I disagree.

Why would a reprange of 8-12 reps stimulate your muscles more than 3-8 reps?  ::)

LOL, because he read it in a magazine so it must be true

hahahahaha, this coming from a fat clown who uses every bodybuilding drug known to man along with synthol and follows the lifestyle to a T and still looks like an 8 dollar an hour bouncer in an East St. Louis strip club.

maybe he uses synthol for its anabolic properties  :)

at 30% BF he has to try something
