that razor ramon match is a classic and he still provides the goods even to this day. hes in pretty good shape too. discuss
-
I don't know if Shawn was the best wrestler of all time, but I do know that "billymimnaugh" is just another delusional fatass who "bench presses" 2 reps a week, eats 25 cheeseburgers a day, and calls himself a "weightlifter"

This is true...HOWEVER...
Hogan will always be the most RECOGNIZED and most POPULAR and mainstream 'wrestler' of ALL TIME. He is probably the only TRUE 'household' name but as a raw 'rassler'...he was decent at best.
Among the hardcore 'rasslin' fans it would be Flair as he's been in the game the LONGEST and has the most title wins.
Combine, strenght, athleticism, endurance, marketing ability, microphone ability, and longivity? I'd say Michales for sure.
One of the best matches I have ever seen had to be Benoit/Bret Hart series.

Ted Dibiase. I do remember him.

there was this guy known as repo-man who was teds side kick
-
there was this guy also repo-man who was teds side kick
Virgil?
-
I don't truly understand the criteria they use to score or judge pro wrestlers, but before his back/neck injuries in the 90's, Michaels was considered one of the best all time by those who make those judgments.
Personally, I can't put anyone ahead of Ric Flair.
-
Virgil?
OHH NOW i remember his name now.his name was IRS.he was teds side kick
-
there was this guy known as repo-man who was teds side kick
Repo-man was Barry Darsow, who had at least a half dozen other names as well (remember Crusher Kruschev in the 1980's?)
-
man all the characters from the 80's and 90's destroy the guys now a days.

The Rock was pretty good. Great on the mic and in the ring. I haven't really watched since he left.
-
Bruno Sammartino. No contest. The nature Boy Ric Flair a close second.
-
personally, this is my take:
Hulk Hogan - no one like him ever, had great mic skills, great charism, good enough in the ring.
The Rock - excellent on the mic, great in the ring, career cut way too short to really tell if he would do for wrestling what hogan did in the 80's.
Micheals - good on mic, great in the ring.
Personally, in terms of sheer talent on the mic and in the ring, even though they always gave him goofy story lines, I still think that Kurt Angle at his peak (2001/2ish) was probaby the greatest overall ever.
-
before i got told i tool like justin timber lake daily, i had long hair and they said shawn michaels
-
Shawn Michaels is awesome, not not the best of all time. I'd say the Rock was the best to watch and listen to.
-
Stone cold Steve Austin!!
-
THE ELBOW AND SWEET CHIN MUSIC BITCHES!
-
Funny my buddy looks exactly like shawn micheals but with a military haircut and more jacked.
-

I think you look like Ed Herman ;D
the best wrestler of all time ric flair

yeah, Irwin R. Schiester. that guy was classic
and no one's got any love for the Superstar Billy Graham?? he's going way back, but the guy was like the first huge personality in wrestling. kind of the Hogan before hogan

You're all a bunch of TAX CHEATS!!!
best wrastlers on a technical leve..gotta be Kurt Angle, then a YOUNG Scott Stiener, back when he could hit the Frankenstiener he was just awsome to watch. Micheals is good but there are better...
-
i would say bret hart - never injured an opponent in 25 years + and was probably the most technically sound wrestler ever seen. his tribute match with benoit after Owen died is one of the 3 best matches you'll ever see
-
i would say bret hart - never injured an opponent in 25 years
he injured goldberg and goldberg ended up getting even by ending bret's career :-\
E
-
he might 've been the best WWE entertainer , but far away from being a good "wrestler"
-
Frankie Williams, Johnny Rodz, Rene Goulet, Iron Mike Sharpe. True legends of the squared circle.
-

E
nope, Goldberg was just a dickhead
-
Dan Gable is.
During his prep and college careers, Gable compiled an unbelievable record of 182-1. He was undefeated in 64 prep matches, and was 118-1 at Iowa State. His only defeat came in the NCAA finals his senior year. Gable was a three-time all-American and three-time Big Eight champion. He set NCAA records in winning and pin streaks.
After college, Gable added titles at the 1971 Pan American Games, the 1972 Tbilisi Tournament and the 1971 World Championships. He won an unprecedented six Midlands Open championships and was that meet's outstanding wrestler five times. In 1972, he won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics without surrendering a point to any of his opponents. The Soviets came to the Olympics with only one goal in mind; to defeat Gable. They were unsuccessful.
In Gable's final 21 Olympic qualification and Olympic matches, he scored 12 falls and outscored his nine other opponents, 130-1. The single point being scored by Larry Owings, who defeated Gable in his final collegiate match.
That is domination.

Abdullah the Butcher, bitches !!!
Seriously, Ric Flair is the best all-around wrestler of all time.

I agree. Nobody was as entertaining, even still today as the Nature Boy.

yeah but his kick to bret's head ended his career
E
my point exactly. He believed his own press too much
-
Personally, I always thought Bret was way overrated.
same move set all the time, not all that great on the mic.
he was good.
but he was no shawn micheals.
-
Ted Dibiase. I do remember him.
Very nice guy my dad was one of the guys that broke him in to wrestling after his dad died.
-
Duke The Dumpster Drose
-
Y'all not mentioning the British Bulldogs. One of the best tag teams of all time.
-
Very nice guy my dad was one of the guys that broke him in to wrestling after his dad died.
Serious. He used to be my favorite Wrestler next to hulk hogan...
-
I agree with Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels is also an excellent wrestler, good longevity.
But I have to mention The Undertaker. He might not be the most technically gifted, but he's been a main event-er for fifteen years, still gets arguably the biggest crowd reaction, best entrance, and still takes a suplex off the top rope! Not bad for a 6' 10" (?!?) 300lb'er.
Triple H will probably go down as one of the best, but you have to wonder how much of that is from marrying the boss's daughter!
-
Curt Henning was one hell of a wrestler, his ability was faultless. had the best dropkick in wrestling history with a possible exception being Bob Holly. Rick Rude could sell a match with ease and draw heat with the snap of a finger.
-
C'mon does Andre the Giant get any props????
-
Y'all not mentioning the British Bulldogs. One of the best tag teams of all time.
I have footage of a match between Dynamite & Davey Boy vs. Joe & Dean Malenko in Japan.
It was THE ABSOLUTE BEST combination of amateur and pro style I've ever seen.
Dynamite Kid's legendary matches with the original Tiger Mask were also remarkable, even by today's much higher standards.
When I trained with a local "pro" promotion, they made us study those tapes. And if Dynamite had been physically capable, I probably would have sought his tutelage.
I know if he could still walk, he would be involved in the business today - probably training newcomers.
-
Very nice guy my dad was one of the guys that broke him in to wrestling after his dad died.
Kox,
I once heard a story about a match between your Dad and Dick Murdoch that took place in, I believe, Louisiana.
It was Bill Watts’s territory.
Anyway, the story also involved a Hershey bar, and ended with people running from the building screaming. :D
I’ve always wondered if that story was true, or is it just a myth?

LOL WOW !
Ya they were working for Watts and before the match my old man stick the Hershey bar in his tights. After the match had been going on for a while and it got good a melted my dad told Murdoch to give him a atomic drop. My dad sold it like crazy the ran his hand down in his tights to reveal the melted candy which people thought was shit. Murdoch and my dad had some great matches including a very bloody one from Japan that I have on tape. They were best friend up until Dickie's death in 96. He was also my god father.
Damn I forgot about that. I'm gonna call my old man right now and get better details. LOL

Yeah, I would imagine the “Cowboy” failed to find the humor in it. ;)
I didn’t know Murdoch had passed.
You have my condolences.
What ever happened to Watts? I know he was booker in WCW around 1989/90(?) – the same time Grizzly Smith was down there. I never heard anything about either one of them after that.

The last time I saw Watts was at a wrestlers reunion they have every year. He kinda acted like he did not want to be there. He was there for only about a hour then he asked someone where the nearest shopping mall was and he left. According to my old man Watts was one of the best promoters to work for he treated the boys well and payed well also.
As for Grizzly Smith I think he is living in Louisiana. I know he Tried to get wrestling going again at the Sportatorium ( spell check ) back in the late 90's but it just did not get going.

KK, I had always heard that Watts was kind of a jerk to work for, especially in the WCW, when he was trying to push Eric, nickel and dimed everybody, etc...
Murdoch was one of my all time favorites back in the day.

Frankie Williams, Johnny Rodz, Rene Goulet, Iron Mike Sharpe. True legends of the squared circle.
I think the most publicity Frankie Williams ever got was being the first guest on Piper's Pit. Johnny Rodz was also good friends with the Hot Rod.

I do know that he did screw a of of guys around in WCW.

Brett Hart
Kurt Henning
Michaels is good but Brett was a a lot better. Michaels Super Kick is pretty lame. no one was better in the ring than Brett. i hated him though.

Maybe we both were just hearing the whiny "new generation" of wrestlers who all thought they should be pushed to the moon and have guaranteed contracts.
Who does your dad consider the best all around wrestler he has worked with?
-

I just called the old fart, he said him self, then he had a long laugh.
He said Murdoch was his favorite to work with, but one of the best workers back when he was wrestling he thought was Mark Lewin. He said any young guy who wanted to get into the wrestling business now days should watch a video of Johnny Valentine. He was very close to all three of those guys and was with Valentine up till his death in 01. He said almost anybody back then was better then the guys now .
-
Kox,
I was fortunate enough to talk with some workers from the old Studio Wrestling Days in the Pittsburgh area like Mike Scicluna, Johnny DeFazio, Hurricane Hunt, etc. Bruno was the most outspoken!
A lot of those guys (and many others from that generation) thought that McMahon Jr. screwed up when he openly admitted that pro wrestling is entertainment mixed with an incredible amount of athleticism.
The opposite side of the argument feels that Vince’s admission attracted a broader audience, as people no longer felt foolish/insulted watching the product.
How did your Dad feel about that?
I know he lived in Baltimore at one point. Did he ever do any work with the McMahon’s in the original WWWF?
-

"Maniac" Mark Lewin AKA: the Purple Haze. It's amazing that he was active for a very, very long time. I remember when I first saw him was when he was doing the "satanic" stuff with Kevin Sullivan in Floridain the 80's, but I had old mags that I found at a flea market where he was a wrestler in the early 70's. Strong mofo, too.
Johnny Valentine is a legend here in the Carolina's. I remember reading about how brutal he was to the young guys. Stories like he would wait until they went to the bathroom while eating and put shit in their food. I mean literally fecal matter. They were all so afraid of him that they didn't do anything when they found out about it.
I would love to sit down over a few brews and shoot the bull with your dad. Did you ever give it a go?

No he never worked with McMahon Sr. but they were friends. He always tried to get my dad to come wrestle in New York but my dad was always committed else where. Toward the end of his career Bruno Samartino tried to get my dad to come up there again but at that time my dad wanted to retire to be at home cause me and my brother had been born, and he missed my two half brothers growing up by being on the road a lot, many times not even out of the Country.
AS for exposing the Business at first he was against it, and may still be but he thinks it was actually better to draw in a bigger audience. My old man is the kinda guy that would never break Kayfabe. That is his biggest complaint now days, is that "theres no kayfabe in the business any more. "

My dad says Mark could get into shape faster then anyone he has ever seen.
And man have I heard some stories about Valentine like that as well many from his own mouth. Like nailing guys shoes to the floor, shiting in their shoes, tying fire crackers to there toes, and once, he even figured out a way to put some kinda liquid in a wrestlers inhaler ( can't remember who ) but the wrestler was having a asthma attack grabbed his inhaler and the shit came out . Johnny thought it was funny the next night the guy pulled a shot gun on him.
My dad is real good friends with Skandar Akbar, who lives here in Dallas and they get together every couple of weeks and my mom cooks up a bunch of food and they sit around telling stories. Now there's a guy who has so much knowledge about wrestling and is a great historian.

Damn, you could charge for us to come and hang out and listen to those. I remember Akbar from his days managing in the mid-south and Texas. Managing The Missing Link. Can you imagine what kind of heat he would generate today?
I've heard about that inhaler thing with Valentine. What was always odd about the guy is that he was incredibly intellingent, great chess player, etc... yet he would do that type of stuff. I guess the road gets boring.
I know your dad was really active in Australia. Did you live there, or was that later?
It was cool going to matches growing up. Got to see McDaniels, Flair, Greg Valentine, Ivan Koloff, Black Jack Mulligan, etc... in HS gyms with about 500 people in attendance.

Dude the fucking Missing Link, he realy is nuts. At an authograph show a few years back he was there and he was in all his make up and stuff. Killer Brooks was signing autographs a few tables down from my dad's and Link was walking by with a chair in his hand and joking around; my dad told Link to hit Brooks with the chair . Link did and Brooks and him starting fighting right there in the exhibit hall. Brooks won. I was very surprised
Yeah, Akbar was managing a guy right after Sept. 11th at an Indy show and who ever was running told him not to wear his head piece cause it would cause too much heat

I remember Brooks doing some work in the Georgia area. Most everything else I read about him in mags, etc...
Link was pretty jacked for that time period. Your dad has to have some Rhodes and Murdock stories. I think it going away from territories has really hurt. Guys could leave one and pop up in another one when his heat was down. Now, I just got tired of the same guys over and over. I rarely even watch anymore. Although TNA is trying to put on a decent show.

Ya Link was Jacked at the Autograph show still. He just turned 65. Must still be on the Juice. Ya I agree about the territories a guy could be reborn some place if he was done another place. Ya my dad a Rhodes are pretty close too. When I was a young kid we would go to his house in Austin every so offten. That was the time of the yellow polkadots.

That was a classic moment in Pipers Pit! I remember working out as a kid. All the wrestlers would be working out. This was the early 80's. Frankie Wlliams came to the gym just to bullshit. Same with Mr. Fuji.
-
I was surprised to learn that Piper is battling cancer.
He and Bobby Heenan are the only cancer combatants I can recall in recent times.
I'm NOT being funny, but I wonder if the reason you don't hear of more wrestlers getting cancer is because something else often gets them first.
Brian Pillman
Davey Boy Smith
Curt Hennig
Rick Rude
Hercules Hernandez
Road Warrior Hawk
...to name a few, all suffered drug related deaths.
But other causes have claimed plenty of others.
Adrian Adonis
Kerry Von Erich
Junk Yard Dog
Owen Hart
Rick McGraw
Dino Bravo
Chris Candido/"Skip"
Big Boss Man
But the one thing they ALL share in common is that they happened at young ages.
That's a frightening trend.

Thats only a small fraction.
Very sadly, you're right.
Candido’s passing shocked me.
I met Tammy and him several times backstage at indy shows. They were always very nice to us trainees, and treated us with respect!
All of those old ECW guys did.
And I don’t think it was only because some of our trainers had worked for that company. They were just good, respectable people.
But back to Chris & Sunny…
The wild stories about their “party” days had some truth, but they had both cleaned up their acts, and you could tell that from their appearance and behavior.
Tammy had stopped tanning and put on, at most, a few pounds and still looked amazingly beautiful. Chris had gotten back in ring shape and was well conditioned. This was shortly before his return to “mainstream” with TNA.
These two were back on track and had a new lease on life.
While I only met them a handful of times, I was legitimately sad to learn that Chris had died from complications of a travelling blood clot resulting from ankle surgery.
Of all f*cking things…
-
Brett Hart
Chris Benoit..sucks on the mic but can go in the ring

I haven’t seen her in over two years.
Still…
I prefer her current look to that of a 95 lb. anemic heroin addict.
Just remember 2 things:
1.) Inner beauty also counts.
2.) Mother Nature and Father Time will one day team up to kick all our
asses. It’s coming…

My dad did a autograph show with Her and Chris about two days before he died. It was the second time I met them. Very nice people the both of them. It was so said when Chris died and kinda weird because we were just with them. I hope she is doing well.
-
I hope she is doing well.
As do I.
-
She and Chris had a lot of friends in the business.
I had already been out of it for over a year at the time, but one of my old trainers shot me a text message with the news when it happened.
From what I heard, Balls and Shane took it really hard.
Well Mahoney and Chris grew up together.
I don’t know if anybody talked to Bam Bam or not.
He was close with them as well and used to come through our way from time to time, but not as much.
I believe he moved to Florida some time back.

Damn right great match, If ramone wasnt such a drunk he'd be the best hahaha.

Kox,
Has your Dad ever been approached about doing a "shoot" interview?
A lot of guys from his generation were/still are protective of the business, but some of them have started doing tell all books and interviews where they come out of character.
Most recently Baron Von Raschke and even Bruno have done this.
I never thought Sammartino would break Kayfabe, and I haven't seen the video, but supposedly, he comes clean.
Surely, if Bruno can do it...

ya he's talked about it he was going to do a shoot interview with some dude but I don't know what happend. He also was doing a interview about a year ago with Texas Monthly Mag. about the Von Erich's and he was not shy to tell all about them.
He has talked about a book. Bobby Henen, and Mick Foley both have offered to put him in contact with their publisher. He and Akbar have been talking about maybe a book together. I don't think he has a problem with breaking kayfabe now. I just think all he wants to do is smoke big cigars, fish, and watch the History Chanel or the antique road show.
-
No, He's definitely a top 5.
Flair and Hart are the best ever...
I will say that of people CURRENTLY wrestling in the WWE he and Triple H are still the best.
I remember a match they had against each other maybe a little over a year ago now that went for 40 minutes... Those guys can still work.
Oh, but AJ styles is the best in the entire business today.

I just think all he wants to do is smoke big cigars, fish, and watch the History Chanel or the antique road show.
Sounds like a plan to me. 8)

I'm afraid I have to repeat my vote for Undertaker, seeing as how he has just won the Royal Rumble and will now headline Wrestlemania!

I dunno man... a "Phenom" should have more than 4 moves and some smoke effects.
-
Old Skool, Snake Eyes, Tombstone, Jumping Clothesline, .... err .... oh dear...
Still, he does get the crowd going, he's had amazing longevity, so thats gotta count for something.
-
Concerning the ACTIVE roster…
Outside of Michaels, I believe that Taker has been with the company longer than anyone. I’m not including any of the legends who make sporadic appearances, or men like Hogan and Piper, who’ve come and gone over the years.
Taker’s agility for someone that physical size is unparalleled.
He’s gone through numerous character changes and story lines.
Some have been phenomenal, while others have sucked balls.
His character and image have been reinvented numerous times, while still staying true to the original “phenom” persona.
He bridged the gap between the
“80’s era and Doink the Clown” era,
the Clown era and mid-90’s era,
mid-90’s era and “Attitude” era,
“Attitude” era and today.
Determining the “best wrestler” includes things like drawing power, mic skills, ring work and longevity. And based on those criteria, then yes, Undertaker is one of the best ever in the history of the WWF and the business in general.

It certainly does, and I personally love the guy... Just don't know about the whole "Phenom" bit.

Going all right bro... had to start posting somewhere since the MD forums started censoring people... I didn't really care for that too much.

Yeah, I noticed it's kind of dead there. You are in the right place man, never gets dull here :D Take care and enjoy.

AS for exposing the Business at first he was against it, and may still be but he thinks it was actually better to draw in a bigger audience. My old man is the kinda guy that would never break Kayfabe. That is his biggest complaint now days, is that "theres no kayfabe in the business any more. "
thats almost word for word what Bobby heenan said in his shoot interview in TWC

The undertaker changed persons in the 90's sometime, he disappeared and a year or so later another dude who looked like him filled his shoes, was stupid.
-

Hogan has to get my vote...although Undertaker is close..it is amazing UT is still fighting at the level he is.
-
The Rock was pretty good. Great on the mic and in the ring. I haven't really watched since he left.
He was no Stone cold though
-

NO ! it is the same guy. WWE did a thing thing two guys, but the guy who is taker now has always been the original

undertaker in early 2000's came back with biker persona which is what he really is in real life?he had cropped spikey gelled hair, now he's back to the undertaker, give him credit till this day to ride out a very cool character, superstar graham's karate persona in mid eighties to battle backlund was a good one.kevin sullivan was jacked in early eighties before the "satanic" story lines, florida wrestling was nut's.
-
ya my old man wrestled down there for a while.

I think the undertaker persona is a lot better than the biker one, and has stood the test of time. His entrance at Wrestlemania the other night was amazing.
