I am blown away at how useless personal trainers can be. Yesterday at my gym I see this typical female personal trainer with her tight black yoga pants, blonde hair in a pony tail carrying around a clipboard training this first time gym using chubby asian girl. I felt bad for this girl. Instead of just teaching her the basics on her first day this dumbass trainer has this poor girl rolling around on a big ball trying to do presses. What the F*ck is it about personal trainers obsession with these overblown bouncing balls? This bitch would not shut up either. Instead of trying to help this poor girl or even give her pointers, she is just blabbing away about her personal shit while this girl is trying to get through a set. I saw an ad posted on a wall that these trainers are charging $75 and hour. $75 for this shit. What a waste of money. The pathetic part was that the gym was empty at the time. She could have used any machine or weight there to teach this girl what she needs to know, instead she has her rolling on her ass trying to balance on a ball. PATHETIC. I got in, trained and finished and she was still blabbing away talking about the most BS training philosophies. Why do these people try to be different?
Even the guru's are pathetic. Look at Charles Glass. people rant and rave about him, yet most of the guys he has trained recently have gotten worse. Jerome Ferguson dropped placing from last year, Gunter has dropped placing. Yet Jenny Lynn won. Basically his little techniques of avoiding heavy weights and doing some BS "unique" lifts aren't working. But they work for little girls trying to stay lean.
I saw on the fit show that Glass was making his guys do close grip bench press with an EZ curl bar and a press machine. Come on man. these are 300 pounds beasts and they are doing this gay variation of a lift. Have them do it on a bench like a real man would. Ronnie would, Jay would but he had Gunther and Jerome looking like little fags and look how it paid off. They both were smooth and lost a shitload of detail from last year because they aren't lifting like men anymore.
Give it up you useless personal traniners. Years and years of experience have proved that the basics work, bench, squats, pull ups, curls etc.... Give up on this bouncy ball shit and your "unique" lifts that do nothing for anyone. Most of these people end up losing weight and praising how good the trainer was, but in reality it was the fact they got thier asses off the couch and actually moved that helped them lose weight, not these useless personal trainers.
Rant over. Move on, nothing to see here anymore.

AHAHAAHAH!!! Yes, the poor norms of the world that actually take some initiative to learn about exercise pay $80 to roll around on some huge fvckin plastic ball for an hour......money well spent!!
-
too true -- but most people would pay just for the company/social aspect. And they make good baby sitters. Cheap date too - if you're trying the hook up with a fitness babe or dude :P :-X

AAHAHAHAH!!! That's kinda pathetic actually. Take it from ribonucleic, anytime he sees a cute hunky trainer he just asks him out.....he always scores some dick without shelling out a dime.

You took the words right out of my mouth. How true it is. People are clueless and these idiot trainers that think they know it all and have 0 credentials and nothing to show for it are bigger idiots.

ever hear of flex wheeler? or chris cormier? jerome's nearing 40 years old and doesnt have what it takes, gunter's career is almost over. he does those weird movements because its something they're not used to- to start new growth. after 20+ years of training you have to get creative sometimes
-
some..VERY few personal trainers have knes degrees and areon their way to getting their masters..
i have a friend like that..knows his shit..
-
some of them know what they're talking about (IntenseOne i believe knows what he's doing) but most of them just got their certificate (arvilla en 99% of the trainers) and start charging fools $50-$200 for a little training.Oh, and swiss ball stuff is a gimmick with very little added value.
Peace

I hear you, dude. Most of the personal trainers out there are complete crap. It's amazing the shit that you see people doing. Just look at that picture of the guy squatting on that ball. That's just ridiculous on so many levels.
The main culprit I think is Men's Health magazine. Do you see the workouts they suggest? 95% of them involve Swiss Balls.
-
well obviously the guys behind the swiss ball needs to be paying em. does muscle-tech have a sister company? ;)
-
I've seen Charle Glass train personally every day at golds venice and this man know's what he is doing trust me. Gunthers placing was his own fault.
But I'm sick of the trainer chicks eating out of a bowl while they train someone.
And their starbucks (carmel) sugar latte's
And their bouncing balls
and their mouths running
and ect ect ect ect
-
Intence, what do you think, have read some of your posts and agreed with your techniques. Would like to hear your philosophy!!!!! Remember fellas not everyone is training to beat Ronni I mean Jay Cuts at the Olympia. That exercise is a little overboard but if an athlete like a surfer or skater could master it, would be beneficial. Not everyone is a bodybuilder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as Glass goes if something isnt working he should at least try another way. Right?
-
Theres some shit ones out there. I spotted one the other day. Looked like its the first time he used weights. He tried inclining the same weight he was benching which was only 30kgs for a handful of clumsy reps, he couldnt do 1 incline with the weight.
I told him to try inclinde dumbells. He had no idea how to do them??? This clowns a trainer. Where the hell did he get his certificate?
I also see other trainers doing one hand pushups and clapping each others hand in between reps. Its funny how none of them train how they train other people. Looks like the gym dictates how they train people. I've seen some good trainers but they are few and far between.
-
About the ball he isnt going for leg mass but strengthening the things that need to be strong for a moving athlete you know ankle turns ,ankle breaks strengthen joints and ligaments. The squat ball is excessive but dude can obviously do it and it is beneficial but dangerous too. ;) Training core type stuff is meant for athletes, explosive drills also. Baseball player better not come in and do massive bench and squats. Wont benefit him much not enough flexibility.
-
Should have to pass written exam and physical exam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats ok, I'd rather pay someone who knows what they're doing!
have you ever used a personal trainer that you payed for Mr. I?
-
have you ever used a personal trainer that you payed for Mr. I?
Mr I. only pays the hunkiest beefcake trainers for sex.

I love the personal trainers that earn their weekend trainer certificates and immediately proceed to wax poetic on the specifics of a healthy lifestyle while eating their supersized combo meals and earning $8/hr on their part-time schedules.

have you ever used a personal trainer that you payed for Mr. I?
No, Ive been training since I was 12, I'm 44 now, have learned from the best and even though I didn't finish college, I still managed a CSCS cert and NASM, I went to school for Anatomy/Physiology, human biomechanics and Kinesiology.....I wish I could have finished but life happends!

exactly, no one should pay for it. ;)

there is good and bad out there.
-
With every rule there is always an exception. How many f*cking times do I see a trainer walking around with a starbucks playing with thier ipod while the client is litteraly killing themselves and they seem to damn uninterested in doing so.
I agree the average person is not in it to compete in the olympia, but come one guys.
That swiss ball is played out, these standing on one foot while curling with the opposite hand and hopping up and down screaming "I'm a nut, I'm a nut" while the personal trainer tells you about their date last night is a complete utter joke.
I am pretty sure that guys like glass, sarcev etc... can work you out until you pass out, but it seems these trainers today including the two I just mentioned try getting way to cute with their excersices and variations. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple shitheads.
-
I agree with allot of what' being said, but as a trainer, some people just need a trainer. Weather it's imagined or real, it's real to them. I have several clients, who I've had on and off for years. I don't call them or let them know in any way that they need someone to train them, but to them, they do and seek me out. I also have some people who have never set foot in a gym and think they need someone to show them the proper lifting styles so when they do go to a gym, they won't feel dorky. I don't know. I don't make friends with clients, I just do the job they want to pay me to do. With most it only takes a few sessions, but with others, their going to want a trainer forever ???

Explain what "keep it simple" means?

not trying to do squats on a big ball when they haven't ever tried squats on the floor. At least train these newbs the beginners stuff before turning them into cirque de soleil performers.

Anyone who squats on a ball should be shot for letting the trainer have them do it, commonsense 101...but I'm assuming you're saying to train people simple......what does simple mean??
-
Mon_of_steele has a point, generally personal trainers are useless, some are very good, but most are pathetic girls...no offense to the PT'S here..
At the gym i go to the trainers are not built, not athletic looking there just regular people with guts, Cmon man, i cant believe people pay them $50-$80/hour to inspire them..
there is this one dude who is overweight he was using a PT over the course of 4 weeks, i seen him in the locker room and i said "hows it going man, hows the personal training going? any results??" he said "i havent seen a change in my body and my wife wants me to stop before i spend another $500"
I was shocked $500, damn man, i told him just go YOUTUBE/online and look up bodybuilding training and get some tips from there or if i'm on the floor I'll help you and get rid of the fucken trainer who is always talking to other members or on the phone when he should be concentrating on this fat guy thats paying him..
and them swiss balls for heaven sake...
-
A few weeks ago there was a guy and his trainer at my gym, and I was talking to another guy about how we thought most trainers are worthless. The guy I was talking to said he looks at a personal trainer as someone you pay alot of money to shoot the shit with you while you work out, and I said "yeah, and every now and then tell you some gay shit like 'poke your butt out when you do that.'" Not 5 minutes later the trainer had the guy doing some deadlifts in the corner and said "yeah that's nice, tighten your butt when you stand up."
-

Haha, your gettin pissed pretty damn quick, arvilla.First of all, does your college degree have ANYTHING to do woth exercise physiology/anatomy or something relevant to PT'ing?I dont think so.
And just because you've been lifting for 15 years(with very moderate results) doesn't make you a good trainer, but if i have to tell you that, you weren't a good one to begin with.
Im done with you, if you wanna be an attention whore on the boards, be sure you're gonna catch some shit for it.
Peace
D
P.S.:your signature pic says i CAN talk shit, because im making you famous...whats it gonna be, it so confusing now.
-
Personal Training is a transient job. Very few people do it as a career. So, most of the trainers you see aren't professionals as much as people looking for a way to make easy money for a while until they move on to something else.

It happened again. Same gym new PT yesterday. The gym I go to is pushing the personal trainer thing because it is pure fuckin profit.
So I see this jackass of a trainer walking in with 2 starbucks coffee and his client who is about 60 years old.
They both start off this fine hour of workout with a starbucks toast and then onto the leg press machine. They stack on 2 plates a side and the old man starts lifting. Now his trainer has turned his back and is playing with the gym stereo. I see this old man litteraly pressing through the lockout position to where his knees start to buckle downwards and he does this for rep after rep. I am just staring in amazement at how this guy is going to fuckin kill his knees and never walk again, especially at 60. This lazy ass traniner doesn't even comment and then mopes around to the hammer bench. Again they put on 1 plate a side and the old man is litteraly pushing the weights with his whole body lifted off of the bench. It was a sad sight. I felt really bad for the guy. When I was done working out , I went to the manager of the gym and commented on this new personal training service and commented on how fuckin bad these guys are. He said he hired them based off of their credentials and shows me a list. The one yoga pant wearing starbucks sipping bitch had a Kinesiology degree, some sort of recovery degree and a bunch of training degrees, the other guy had a degree from a really great college and again had all of these degrees for training.
So my question is. What the fuck is the point of these degrees if the trainer is shit? Just because someone gets a drivers license mean they can drive well.
I hope the manager monitors these trainers before someone seriously hurts themselves and sues his ass.

This really exemplifies exploiting the ignorant.
Basics?
It's a possibility that chubby Asian doesn’t know any basics.
So if the Swiss ball is where they start, chubby Asian may end up believing that Swiss ball technique IS the basics.
And until (if) chubby Asian masters it, she “needs” the personal trainer for instruction and help.
Set a goal they cannot/may not reach and they’ll always need your help to get there.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph. That's The Photo of the Year, Lizzy. There ought to be a law. I sense there will be soon, when the lawsuits start coming in. This "extreme core" training is sending a lot of people to chiropractor's and surgeons. I know adults in their early 30's who are already having hip replacements, and
attributing the damage to their training. Bottom line: All such injuries
injure the fitness industry. It's completely unregulated and, obviously,
unsafe.

One more thing:
I believe many of us perceive PT’s methods as inferior because those methods usually differ from our own.
We train the way we do because we believe it is correct (for whatever reason), and everyone else is wrong and/or stupid.
Granted there are some exercise methodologies that ARE a ridiculous waste of time and energy. There is even research that suggests Swiss balls are not all they’re cracked up to be (imagine that).
But sometimes the difference is as subtle as doing dead lifts at the beginning, middle or end of a session. Is there a right and wrong time to do them? Anybody reading this who does DL’s is shaking their heads yes, because they “know” that their order is the right one - OBVIOUSLY.
If they thought it was wrong they wouldn’t do it that way. And if their way is right, then the others must be wrong.
But look at the big picture.
A good trainer should listen and respond to the needs/desires of their customers.
Maybe chubby Asian read some article about Swiss balls in Oxygen and UNDENIABLY WANTS TO LEARN HOW TO USE THEM.
You’re the knowledgeable and experienced PT. If you want chubby Asian’s business do you
a.) blindly agree to teach Swiss Ball 101 with less than stellar results
b.) tell her Swiss balls are a waste and you’ll only teach her the basics (which she may already know, and that’s not what she’s looking to “buy” anyway)
c.) offer to teach her some SB exercises along with ahealthy dose of conventional basics to compliment her training progress
Choice “C” will not only appease her initial SB wishes, but will also use the proven basics to get some results. The compromise benefits you and chubby Asian! You get business and chubby Asian gets results.
Plus, maybe then you can slowly wean her off of that Swiss ball shit.
Some people only want short-term introductory instruction.
Others want long-term/constant motivation.
The people who are smart enough to know that they don’t know everything will come back to you to learn new things later down the road.
Being adept at all of these scenarios as well as using one to segue into others…
That makes a successful PT.
Getting their clients the results they paid for in the end...
That makes an effective PT.
Doing both…
That makes a GOOD PT.

I take all my bad words against Personal trainers...one of the hot personal trainers at the gym asked me out :D....
-
I train at 24 hour fitness here in Denver and they have a few good trainers and then they have alot of poor ones. Some of these trainers know very little about being in a weight room and what to do.And much less about nutrition. There are actually more fat and out of shape trainers then ones in shape.
-
In most cases your average trainer doesn't even have a legitimate certification, any joe can go out and get one. The legit certifications (NSCA, ACSM, etc..) require a degree in health related major i.e.-Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Human Performance, before they will let you take their test and use their name.
-
leave my fucking name outta this!
(i got 2 certificates ACE and ISSA and a fucking college degree!!!)
plus i been training for 15 plus years ..........if im not qualified then i don't know who the f**k is!
i had to learn kinesiology, biology, and all kinds of shit..........
keep my name ouuta ur fucking mouth!
HAHAHA, if you really did do that, why would you meltdown like a high school girl on her period when some random guy comments on it? Monster hitting the nail on the head dawakakakaman. Arvilla can't even fix his own physique, let alone that of others.
-
If you do your homework before choosing a personal trainer, you usually get your money's worth.
Former athletes (sprinters, bodybuilders, martial artists, boxers etc) who after retiring from their sports become personal trainers tend to be excellent and are no comparison to the kid coming out of school starting personal training because he/she doesn't know what to do with his/her life otherwise.
-
a good personnal trainer would tell you how he got huge (if he is), but who would like to tell his secrets to the others, helping em to become bigger and then an adversary ?
And a personnal trainer who isnt big,or at least muscular, is just a mistake of nature.

I have to agree that most of the PT I see are a complete joke. Theres this one stick man trainer who trains his clients exclusively with rubber bands?? They have a whole gym full of state of the art resistance equipment and this dork has his clients do a rubber band workout? What a shame and disservice to the client. Plus the douche will take up half the gym with this training method. He hooks the bands up to equipment and then the sillyness begins. There was this one trainer we called him Fabio, he was the pretty boy type and of course some girls just had to have Fabio train them. Well this guy would mope around the gym like he could care less all the time. One day I was on the eliptical and this guy walked up to his young woman client (who was so excited to be trained by the hot Fabio) like he just woke up, then he says "I gotta get out of this place" all depressed, this is before they started the workout! I was thinking this chick is paying this asshole to train and motivate her? some people are so stupid.
I agree with the guy who said the gym does dictate how they train clients as I knew a good trainer there who taught the basics and this guy was a huge BB, he did a good job and new how to get results for anybody in the gym, but the gym wanted him to start the balls and bands and he said nope, they said, too bad goodbye. What a shame cause this guy was really good.
Bottom line its about getting as much money out of the clients for as long as they can. If someone can read, look at pictures and have the desire they can train themselves you will make some mistakes but thats how you learn best.

its not your diplomas and studies that makes you what you are ; its yourself . Your childish /immature /retarded behavior, your monster insecurity, and the fact that you re proud of the pathetic things you achieved in your life . Most people think you re a joke, and that a roided bad looking bodybuilder who does personal training is what it is: a lame ass loser.
And judging by your "15 years" of lifting, the fact u needed steroids to achieve results a natural bodybuilder could make in a year, i think everyone sees yourself for what you are: a clown.
But hey, you re trying to survive with what mother nature gave you like everyone else, but stik to knowing what your real place is stop pretending you re something you re not.

It is a pretty weak way to earn a living.

Mike, why did you waste a college degree like this? Seriously? At least 4 years of college to earn a living at being a personal trainer? No benefits? No pension plan? No paid holidays?
-
piss off you fucking wanker!
heres your "very moderate results".............
(i have helped numerous clients lose a ton of weight/feel better bout themselves wtf have you done!?!?)
1 guy was medically obese now hes shooting to get under 200 lbs!
he looks/feels fantastic!
like i said keep my name outta ur fucking mouth!
Mike, you just got in shape after? Its not like you were ripped or striated until recently.

It is a pretty weak way to earn a living.
And it usually isn't a very good living at that. It's a young mans game. Not somebody who wants to make a good living.

there is a pt at my gym that is making six figures a year. He got every certification, licensed in massage, nutrition degree. Now he is going back to med school. Started out as a just a PT now doing great.

I hope he wears protection.

What the f**k is the point of these degrees if the trainer is shit? Just because someone gets a drivers license mean they can drive well.
I hope the manager monitors these trainers before someone seriously hurts themselves and sues his ass.
ha ha
sometimes degrees enter through the window and common sense goes out the door.
i started lifting weights to get as strong as possible whilst remaining lean and functional for my sport, simple as that.
common sense tells me that i don't ask a guy with 12 inch arms and a 38 inch waist how to get this done.
sanity tells me that i don't also go ahead and pay the guy.
having said that (and this is where i do a reverse flip), not everyone is as motivated as your typical 'get big' poster. i didn't need motivation at all to train, it was something i had done since i was a kid. not everyone is the same, but everyone needs to exercise, so what are people like this meant to do? they obviously don't have the time/motivation/interest to learn this stuff so they pay. a bit like how we pay mechanics to fix our cars.
-
Most personal trainers don't even know how to perform an exercise properly themselves even after acquiring multiple degrees. The trainer in this thread is a perfect example.
-
Mike, why did you waste a college degree like this? Seriously? At least 4 years of college to earn a living at being a personal trainer? No benefits? No pension plan? No paid holidays?
After reading the negitive posts on here about PT's just shows the lack of business sense people have on here.
bmacsys, having no benefits, no pension and no paid holidays is the sacrifice ALL self-employed business owners have to pay until they start making enough to cover those benefits on their own, if a person goes out and makes $200g's without using or having a degree what difference does it make on what they do? If you can't develop a properous business as a PT your either lazy or have no drive whatsoever, I've said this before, if you treat like a part-time job that's all it will ever be, but if you treat it like a business you can reap the rewards!
-
In the end the person who prevails is the person who knows what he's doing in a gym. A person who can go train without any idiot misguiding them will prosper in more ways then one. The major argument is do persona trainers know what the hell they are really doing? In my experience from watching them the answer is NO.

It is MUCH harder to run your own business than to work for someone else. My paid holiday is any holiday I chose to take and it is paid since I make more money and have more freedom than I would working for someone else.
Are you mad becasue you couldn't work for yourself?
