Post by: Old School Trainer on February 19, 2007, 07:56:05 PM
Don't you love how all of the cool state of the art equipment goes into gyms that the members will NEVER no how to use it correctly.  After a couple of years none of it will work right because the staff is so clueless that they don't no what the machines are supposed to feel like either.  The old trainer in the video didn't even no how to do a bicep curl.

I was in fitness management for over 15 years and all of these new gyms are basically fat farms that want first timers that need a staff personal trainer to hold their hand every workout.  About 5 years ago I joined a club like that because I had gotten out of shape and thought I could go and hide there and train on some brand new equipment.  I spent all of my time putting away weights just to be able to get my on weights on the trees correctly.  If I wanted to use a cable machine I had to help the overwieght moms finish their sets so I could get them off the equipmet.  There was never a trainer around unless he or she was getting paid privately.  Every member had the seat position wrong and had no clue what they were doing.  I spent half my workout helping the members who were very grateful and seemed to think that the young staff cared more about where they were going to party at night than doing their fucking job.  The front desk person wouldn't even make eye contact with me, just scanned my card and would keep running her mouth about God knows what!

I agree about slamming weights as I was tought by one the best trainers every that if you can pick a weight up, you can certainly put in down without just dropping it.  I don't see how a grunt here or there would disrupt anothers' workout.  Clearly these people could never make it in the Armed Forces.  What it really comes down to is ones' insecurity.  The out of shape crowd doens't like to work out around those who have acheived results and paid their dues.  They are intimidated and they out number us.  They have the money.  Look at all of the Gold's that are not renewing their fanchise fees and changing their names to something that seperates them from bodybuilding.

I want to get a day pass to Planet Fitness.  Deadlift 400lbs for X amount, scream on each rep, then slam the shit out of the weights.
I like when that old ass trainer says, "We go for more of a lean look at Planet Fitness."  Last time I checked, everyone in a gym has a different goal.  Another "perfect form" guy who probably makes his clients curl 5lb dumbells with a 6 second down 3 second up motion.  These people make me laugh.  You could tell how most of those people were intimidated by the stronger gym members.  I never had that feeling going to a gym, so it was an eye opener.  Hell, even when I was 150lbs and scrawned like crazy, I keep a shirt on like a tiny little man and accepted I had been eating jelly beans and smoking cigarettes for a few years straight.
I do agree to some extent about slamming weights.  If you're deadlifting heavy weight...ok, heavy dumbell bench press...ok...aside from those, there really is no need to slam plates.  I shrug 400+ and you can't hear the bar touch.  Or 270lbs on seated row, barely hear the plates hit.  It's called, controlling your fucking weight.  Some may argue, they are "so spent" at the end of a set, they can't place the weight down...horseshit.  It's always the same douchebags too.  Not always, but usually it's the guys with a macho complex dropping their "massive weight".  I usually outlift these clowns.  Grunting is fine on a heavy squat, leg press, or a big final rep of a major body part, but is some dick grunts every rep of every set, it's uncalled for.  Last time I checked though, this was the USA?
How about banning cell phones in gyms...cause when I'm benching I can barely concentrate on my set if someone's phone rings. ::)
For the people crying in that video...Get some fucking intesity in your workout you sorry sacs of shit.  That's why you look the way you do and probably will remain the same.  They're the same type of people who say they have a good diet, then eat 3x a day.  Classic.  What a bunch of fags in our country.
Oh, meltdown.

I know what you mean, man.

I was trained nto to drop the weights, let alone slam them.

If the weight is THAT heavy, you have no business doing it.

It's usually the attention whores who do that shit. I laugh at them, since they are usually using little weights anyways, but have to make a spectacle out of it, as if anyone gives a shit.

Should have seen this asshole today, old guy, huge gut, massive ILS. Struggling with 225 on 1/4 squats.......so what does he do? He increases the weight, like a fucking dumbass. Do I need to tell you he got floored?

Hardcore buddy!  ::)

I wish there were one of those gyms near me.I would go there and purposely try and get the lunk alarm. ;D

maybe wear some of those fruit loop pants from 1980,a tank top and a big ass lifting belt and stand around flexing ridiculously  and say "light weight baby!" whenever my training partner did his set.

Cable machine, pull up and dip tower, full bench, and a bunch of little shit. But anyway...I like workin legs in the gym but a home i do everything else. And i sometimes yell  if i have to.

It'd be pretty funny to film Ronnie Coleman training there.  Chalk, yelling, profanity, sweating, throwing and dropping plates, tbar rowing with an Olympic bar in the corner.  Then when they rang the lunk alarm and asked him to leave, he could respond in his standard jibberish which they certainly wouldn't understand.  Also seeing the fat lady working at Planet Fitness approaching Mr Coleman with her orders would be funny too.

No shit, I would give my left nut to see one on those fucktards interviewed (except for the BB guy) being in the middle of a set when that alarm goes off. As it scares the shit outta them, it causes them to drop a dumbbell on their head, splitting it open, and exposing their brain.
I would then walk over, grab their brain, and take a bite as their body twitched on the floor. Then I’d go knock out a set of 500+LB deadlifts while screaming my ass off and spitting bloody brain all over the mirror in front of me.

When you think about it...what's more distracting, someone grunting every now and then squatting a ton...or some fucking alarm with a light blasting for 10 seconds?  People have reached a new level of fagdom.  It's ok to have your "life partner" Jorge spot you, while wearing spandex and a fishnet tanktop, but please...don't drop the weights or I will be offended.  This country is shot..haha

Look at all of the Gold's that are not renewing their fanchise fees and changing their names to something that seperates them from bodybuilding.

hahahahaha, the funniest part was the 53 year old 5'11" 129 pound "personal trainer" wearing two shirts saying that there is absolutely no reason to ever grunt while he's "demonstrating" seated db curls with a pair of 10's.
AHAHAhahhahahahhhaha... no shit... priceless crap.

What grounds would you have to sue?  If you signed a contract when joining agreeing to their st00pid rules, there's not much you can do.  (Other than not patronize their dumb gym anymore).

All kinds of grounds. These people are treading close when they make comments like. "This gym might not be for you" or "We go for a more leaner look at Planet Fitenss" They are discriminating against larger people. They may have certain "policies" but those policies can not supercede the law. It might be my policy not to serve blacks, but that is not legal. It's only a matter of time before some idiot they have working for them says the wrong thing to a "bigger" guy who happens to not want to put up with their discrimination. So many guys will complain, but no one really wants to so anything because of laziness. All they want to do is bitch about it. First time there is a law suit and there will be, it will be national news.

It's already happened. Some guy filed a lawsuit against Planet Fitness a few months back for grunting and getting kicked out. Made national news and all. Yet, haven't seen a fuckin' change. But believe me -- change or no change, I will NEVER join or set foot in that ridiculous gym.

Wrong type of suit. Once they are hit with a discrimination suit it's change time for them as far as policies go.

"larger people" aren't a protected class, blacks are.

Besides, nowhere did they say you couldn't work out there if you were "big", they said if you want to work out there you can't grunt while doing it.

I think you are missing my point. We both know that they are trying to keep out the bigger bodybuilder type guys. Anyone can sue whether they are a "protected class" or not. Win or lose when it does happen it will be bad for them either way.

It will get tossed out by a judge before it ever sees a jury.  Juries decide disputed matters of fact, but judges decide matters of law.  As a matter of law, you can discriminate on any basis you want, except:  race, religion, national origin, age, gender, disability status, and (in some places) sexual orientation.  You can discriminate against poor people by charging a $20k initiation fee, you can discriminate against smokers by not allowing smoking, and you can discriminate against the fashion impaired by putting a dress code in place.  You can even discriminate in your pricing, on the basis of things like volume or other purchased services.  Discrimination based on things other than membership in a protected class happens every day, and is completely legal and not actionable.

Hope this helps.

Ah, OK.  ::) First of all there are hundreds if not thousands of sham lawsuits per years and rarely do they ever get thrown out. The courts make their living hearing cases last I remember.

The problem a "bodybuilder" faces taking these guys to court is the judge.

White collar guys like that are planet fitness' main customers and 99% of judges would be biased in favour of the chain.

I'm not even mentioning the drug issue. Like an obviously roided guy would stand a chance in court on this...

Agreed, plus it’s a condition of their membership policy. You know when joining what the policy is. Although I think the whole thing is ludicrous, I don’t think anyone would stand a chance in hell of winning a lawsuit against them.

As stated, not a lot of sympathy stirred up by the "But they're discriminating against BODYBUILDERS" cry.

Planet Fitness is making money hand over fist from all of these suckers giving them 250K for each franchise. Of course most will go out of business, but they're laughing all the way to the bank. They will gladly outspend any private Joe looking for a lawsuit and would welcome the publicity, as it will only bring in more chumps who think these shitholes are a great business venture.

Agreed up to a point. Regardless if the guy is gassed, it has no merit whatsoever in court. They can't just assume or speculate that he's gassed. He is taking Planet fitness to court because he grunted and was kicked out of the gym for it. Even natural guys will grunt or slightly moan when lifting a heavier weight. I hear women moaning in my gym when they are doing leg presses.

WOW...I thought people were kidding the first time I heard about these gyms that had these type of "RULES"... sadly the members who complained were FAT, GAY, SKINNY or WOMEN. Hmmmmmm let see which female has the vaginal odor that a man can complain about...let see which old fart has the bad breath odor from bad dentures that one can complain about, ..how about the old gay man with the supposed perfect form...can men complain that he is gawking lustfully at them??? While I am against any gym members dropping weights hard to draw attention to themselves...I agree if you pick it up then you better be able to put it down sensibly; but to get into this bullshit of grunting...or making any sound for that matter... IS RIDICULOUS.

I have always felt women should have their own gym or a gym should be segregated, because it is usually the women who complain about the gym atmosphere and members. If you don't like the gym or grunters or BIG muscle men or sweat...THEN GET THE HELL OUT A GO TO SOME PLACE LIKE LIVING WELL LADY, LUCILLE ROBERTS OR CURVES. The gay guy can go to some bath house somewhere to get laid and the old fart should be lucky he is alive and well enough to move around.

The gym policy should be...IF YOU CAN'T TAKE THE NOISE STAY OUT OF THE GYM...

The real answer here is for a boatload of huge roided-up bodybuilders to target one specific planet fitness, all show up together and simply work out there all day long.... using 10 lb dumbbells and reporting all the REGULAR members to the front desk...

All gyms suck.

Working out at home is much better.  (Assuming you can afford to buy proper equipment)

Damn Goatboy, after nearly 3 years we practically totally agree on something!

PRACTICALLY ALL gyms suck except the truly hardcore ones (e.g. Coffee's magnificent gym in Atlanta), but they are becoming rarer and harder to find!

Surely, any truly hardcore, dedicated, weight-trainer has their own home gym!!?  Training at home, you don't have to put up with all of those bed-wetting, pansy-ass, gym/"health-club" rules AND the queer PT's, and management/staff personnel, that populate them!!!

Training at home you can grunt, fart, shout; set up your own circuit; don't have to wait for some ditzy gal to tie up the angled leg press machine loaded to a massive 90 lbs., while she talks on the cell phone (??!); and you can load up the bar on the power rack to over 1000 lbs. to do partial front squats w/o having someone run and complain to the management...etc.!

Why hell, you can't even find POWER RACKS in most all gyms/health-clubs, nowadays, and the moron PT's there don't even know what a "power rack" is!???

Anyone who is a hardcore and dedicated trainer is REALLY missing out if they don't have a 24/7 home gym available!!

And, its great to find hardcore gyms where ALL YOU HEAR IS GRUNTING and the clanging of the iron!!!

I mean, I can't even stand the ones where when I'm going-for/concentrating-on a PR, I have to try focus over the blare of gangsta rap music!!
