Since I am the king of all things VAn Halen here at GB it's my duty to inform you that the tour for this year which was to feature David Lee Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen has been put on tour until further notice. The "Greatest Hits 78-84"has also been scraped. So Van Halen who have sold over 60 million records since thier debut and have had 4 number 1 albums in a row is officially a train wreck. Good thing Ed and Al have handled the VH legacy with such dignity and respect for the last 10 years.....the band has officailly been run into the ground.
Anyway:
-
listen to Alex..... ::) ::)
-
the real reason Sam and Mike are out!!!! ;D
-
one of my favs....check out the guitar solo, man those were the good ole days.
-
best song from the 04 new tunes IMO, I don't know if this particular bootleg version does it justice but the end is f'n awsome on the cd, very heavy.
overall the song is a little disjointed but it's still a good tune.
-
unless you own a guitar like this (mine).. you can't claim to be "king of all things VAn Halen here at GB" ;D

"VAN HALEN TOUR POSTPONED:
Yes, it is 100% true that the Van Halen 2007 tour has been indefinitely postponed. Details are a little thin on the ground and no one is talking on the record, but I did manage to talk to my contact who originally told me of the re-union plans in October last year.
Despite what little has been said publicly so far, it seems there are issues beyond paperwork and contracts that need to be ironed out. Van Halen has always been a volatile mix of personalities and 2007 is no different. Basically those involved in this tour won't commit until all issues are dealt with, hence the postponement of current plans.
I am told though, that this postponement should be just that - a temporary situation that can be sorted so that the dates that had been arranged can be re-booked and announced down the track somewhat.
The line-up for this tour remains Eddie, Wofgang & Alex Van Halen and frontman David Lee Roth."

I have a truce with TA so I can't relly comment on him ;D ;D
let's just say, I can back up this claim. My VH knowledge is pretty vast....pick a topic and I can speak on it. I've gotta go get the kids to bed so if not tonight I'll do it tomorrow morning and I wont' use the ancient art of google-fu either ;D ;D

here's one to sleep on...
what was VH's original bassists name and what does he do for a living right now-he actually played on some early demos that they did, I believe at cherokee studios in 1976ish and he's on a couple of bootlegs of the band playing at the starwood.
-
hahaahaha
I used to love the old Van Halen, I collected every bit of memorablia I could find but they have been a joke for a while now. Thanks for sharing anyway.

Do you really want to see a VH tour? I'm a huge fan but would be pathetic - David Lee's voice is fucked up and Eddie's various health issues >:( I will remember the good ole days

I'm convinced Eddie Van Halen is absolutely crazy.
-
(http://www.vhnd.com/images/vh2007.jpg)
It kills me to say this, but this gives the word farce a bad name. At this stage, it would be more respectable if they changed their name to Spinal Tap and called the greatest hits CD "Smell The Glove". To think this would have been three greatest hits albums we've had in the last 11 years compared to one studio album. Since VH released their last studio album I've gotten into Shawn Lane, Buckethead, Eric Johnson & Steve Morse and it really hurts me to say it but I don't miss the fact that Eddie hasn't released anything new in that time.
Eddie really had the chance over the last 10 years to cement himself in the same stratasphere as Hendrix & Shawn Lane but he bombed out. Even I have to be reminded of Eddie when I talk with people about who are the best guitarists of all time, 15 years ago that was unthinkable, he would just roll off your tongue. I do hope that this will get off the ground and they come to Australia. I would love to be able to say I saw VH with Dave instead of I saw VH in '98 when Gary Cherone sang for them ::). I like Gary a lot as a person and with Extreme but he didn't fit VH at all.

a vh tour right here and now would be a disaster, a total disaster. Eddie Van halen is pretty much certifiably insane at this point. I honestly don't think anyone can get along with him for any length of time...total disaster of a band these days.
Ruined, just ruined.
BTW-Van Halens original bass player is a guy named Mark Stone, he got the boot somewhere around 76ish and last I heard he was working as a plumber in the Pasadena area, there are boots of him playing with the band so if they ever do a boxset maybe he'll get some risiduals or something.

Eddie Van Halen besides being nuts is also behind the curve. He's squandered whatever mystique he had guitar wise IMO. A guy like Paul Gilbert would shred his mortal soul!

Paul Gilbert is very underrated but..back in the day when Ed was on he was incredible. Right now he's a shadow of his former self, he relies to much on the sustainer and some of things he used to do that were flat out amazing are just pedestrian now.
there used to be a clip on youtube of Gilbert fooling around with an acoustic guitar and someone asks him to play Spanish Fly and he rips it out like it's nothing, it's pretty amazing. I don't even think Eddie could play that right now judging by what I've seen and heard over the last few years.

Well in Eddies case you have a guy who built upon his influences and people like Paul Gilbert built upon that so Eddie can't surpass that anymore then if you asked Chuck Berry to play a Metallica tune. Doesn't mean they aren't great but they just end up doing what they do.

If they were this ragged 23 years ago, seeing them now would be truly painful to watch.

they were really disjointed in 1984 so that HFT vid is just a reflection of that, I've got boots from that tour that are unlistenable. They just played to f'n loud on alot of Dave tours, the sound was terrible...plus I really don't think Dave's voice held up to good.
Here's the ban playing the whiskey a go go in 1993, I've got boots from this show-1 soundboard and 1 audience and this is pretty much exactly how they sound, no doctoring. Sammy can sing his ass off.

How about during Romero Delight on the US Festival vid where Dave stuffs the 2nd verse and just goes "I forgot the F**kin words" ;D, I love that part with a passion. He used to do it quite a lot though, I think he planned some his "forgot the words" lines.
SERGIO!!!!

I figured Eddie/Dave would fuck it up. It's probably a money thing. If it is personalty clash I wonder why they cant just record the music and then Dave can lay the tracks down. Go back and forth until they all half ass agree on the arrangement and mix a master. Dave wont even have to be there to get on Ed's nerves or vice versa. I believe Sammy did this in the later years of VH.

alot of dave's "rap" durng the show was the exact same everynight..."I wanna fuck your girlfriend"...."I forgot the fucking words"...etc. He still uses some of those lines these days.
Man if I could post some of my old boots, Dave sounds like Bill clinton and he's saying "c'mon let's get some more people out on the dance floor"..it's funny as hell.

y'know the one thing that pisses me off about that pic is the simple fact that Ed is holding that guitar. That guitar is a charvel replica of his 1984 red and white stripped guitar that Ed originally built for about 200 bucks...the replica's are 25,000 a piece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now keep in mind that Ed bitches and bitches about sammy hagar and Mike Anthony selling tequilla and hot sauce. Ed also bitches about SH and MA doing VH songs on Sammy's last tour yet he has no problem with Dave who's been touring with a VH cover band for he last 10 years doing all VH songs for his whole set...sam and mike did like 6-8 songs in the middle of Sammy's set and the rest was Sammy with his band ???

The man's place in guitar history is unassailable. But let's face it. He's a total dick.

most are on cassette and I don't even know how to get them onto disk :-X
sorry. Oldest one I have is them in 74, most are from 76 for the old stuff.
do a search on youtube, some people put some of the 25 song warner bros demo on there to some old picture footage. Look for he following songs:
eyes of night
get the show on the road
Ain't No stoppin-might be called "lets get rockin"
last night
there's also a song called "I want some action" that is a leftover from 5150-no guitar solo but it sounds like it would have been a cool song-kinda like Good Enough if your familiar with that song.
-
You know it's been almost 22 years since Van Halen and David Lee Roth split apart. You have to really ask yourself if these guys can still operate as the cohesive unit they once were. I personally feel that they have been apart so long that their perfomances on tour won't be very good or no where near as good as they once were dating back to the early 80's.
Now, it looks like they won't get to reunite and tour after all due to ego and obvious legal reasons. It's a shame, it really is. These guys could have made history and tons more cash over the last 22 years if they could've just found a way to just shut the fuck up and get along for the sake of doing what they do best..........perform and create great music. Now, the founding members are all in their early to mid 50's and sadly, the magic is probably long gone.
What a waste.
-
sadly, the magic is probably long gone.
Even if they'd been playing together continuously all this time, you have to wonder how much juice they'd have left. When you play "Eruption" for the 2,217th time, you might as well be filling out a deposit slip at the bank.
Grace Slick, who could speak from first-hand experience, said that it's embarrassing to see old people playing rock and roll. That would have to go triple for heavy metal.
-
I mean, don't get me wrong. I liked a couple of Hagar albums. 5150 is probably one of the best pure rock and roll albums of all time. The Cerone era almost destroyed their legacy, in my opinion. That guy sucked donkey dick!
But think about what kind of creative ideas a Roth-led Van Halen could have produced over the last two decades. Makes you wonder how their place in rock and roll history could have been that much better than it already is.
Nonetheless, their 2007 Rock and Roll hall of fame induction is long overdue and well deserved.
-
if they would have stayed together it would have been interesting but realistically Dave and Ed were moving in 2 totally different directions as far as songwriting and band image were concerned. It would have failed sooner or later. The thing with Sammy was he came in and did exactly what Eddie wanted him to do at the time, Ed put down music to something like Why Can't This Be Love and Sammy could sing it and write to it, no hassle no problem. Dave fought tooth and nail againts keyboard tunes, Sam just rolled with it. For better or worse Sammy and Eddie could do whatever they wanted..unitl that rat bastard Ray Daniels came in and destroyed it. The Hagar era gets painted as just keyboards but in reality they only did like 8 keyboard songs-the record company just chose to release those to radio instead of stuff like "5150", AFU or The Seventh Seal which are all great rock songs.
listen to diver down-which is considered "dave's album" and then listen to Eat em and Smile. Then listen to 5150 and see how much different Ed's direction was than Dave's.
-
What's your favorite VH album, natural al?
Mine is:
Van Halen's self titled debut in 1978
5150 from the Hager era.

CArnal Knowledge....everyone in the band was firing on all cylinders for that and they finally got thier production down. If you can listen to Judgement Day. The Dream is Over, Pleasure Dome....hell, everything on that disk is incredible.
From the Dave era...prolly the first one or 1984, I love Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain from that disk.
I love the Sammy era stuff, 5150, Ou812 and Balance are all great...to me. I grew up during that time so those albums are the shit as far as I'm concerned. The production kinda sucks on 5150 and OU812 but I've heard a couple of remastered tracks that some fans have done and if they ever officially remaster those they're gonna be awsome.

It's easy to put them on disk, these days. You have a computer burning program, most likely you can put them on your hard drive via a cable from your tape deck to your computer. From there, it's easy to upload them to a site like the aforementioned sites. It's more of a matter of time. Since you can't speed tape up without making the copy sound like the Chipmunks (maybe that's a direction EVH might want to go in?), you'll have to sit down and listen to memories as the tape plays/records in real time. With CD to CD, you can actually make a 80 minute CD in 5minutes- though the sound quality could suffer in different ways.

Difference here is that Dave has his name on all of those songs he plays with his band. You know Roth/VanHalen. Lyrics/Composer/Arrangement.
If Sammy (or Mike Anthony) isn't mentioned as one of those he (EVH)has a right to be pissed. Altough theres noting he can do about it,he gets his royalties from it. ( I know its not royalties that you get when your song gets played but I don't know what it is called in States)
If they ever start that 40 gig tour. My prediction is around 15 maybe 18...

Is it? Ok. I know that you(they) get royalties from record sales but tought that there was another term for that other stuff.

Now we know why. Eddie is drunk again.

i loved women and children first, first 4 track's eddie's blaring, guitar solo's to start song's.alex was a very underrated drummer, had that pounding snare drum, was like wrapped so tight.loved the four bass drum's kit's he had later on.roth on record was very convincing a lounge singer with some soul, lost it completley live.i remember every year as a kid getting those 5 album's back to back.now group's take 4 year's to record.i am saddened by the new's,i think i would have actually passed,i saw the sammy 04 reunion tour,it was spotty.

This was the 2nd night in Oakland '81 of which only three songs exist on video (Unchained, So This Is Love, Hear About It Later), only the 1st night exists via an audience recording. This show is #1 on most VH fans wish list for a full DVD release.
