Title: Bob Paris: Wise words of a visionary/NEW PICS on p.2 and p.6
Post by: columbusdude82 on March 15, 2007, 01:02:58 PM
Check out what Bob has to say in this Youtube clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mki8KYV8iLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mki8KYV8iLY)

Keep in mind this was in the mid-eighties, before the onslaught of the gut monsters, but we're still saying all this today...

Best poser in BB history, by the way.

Good advice there from Paris - just a shame today's guys don't portray themselves in that light.

Thing is, Paris's physique looks attainable there - no-one in the real world can relate to a guy like Ruhl or Coleman. That's why bodybuilding sucks to the general public.

Thing is, guys with physiques like Paris (or the modern day equivalent) wouldn't be given the time of day in the IFBB, or in the pro qualifiers... hell they would never turn pro to begin with...

Bob Paris comes across basically exactly as I would like to.  He is a role model of mine in pretty well every possible area.  I hope he shows up at the Olympia or Arnold one of these years.

He would be so out of place though... Remember how much of a freakshow the AC was? What does Paris, with his legacy in bbing, have to do with that?!

Yes Yemeni, that was odd.  BUT .... I won't lie..... as a teenager he was one of my idols.

He was handsome, wellspoken and had perfect symmetry.  In fact, you reminded me of him, Yemeni. Please take that as a compliment.

I had no idea he was gay... and ultimately I didn't give a rat's ass.  I'm not homophobic and I truly aspired to his physique.... not Ronnie Coleman's or Dorian's.

I stole many of his poses as seen below.... don't rip on me too hard guys ...I was only 24 in these shots ... just a pup!  Now....  where is Grant's damned Iced Tea!???

LMAO. No way. Aside from the fact that the general public would think he was enormous, show me five guys who was 6' 1" and looked like that, let alone were that muscular.

Grant, you think the transition of bodybuilding to the gut monsters and crazy drug use could have been averted in any way? With the coming of Dorian and Nasser, that's the turn the sport seemed to take.

Don't get me wrong Grant, I too admired Bob and have always considered his type of physique the ideal.  I also emulated some of his posing style and thought he was one of the few guys that worked on developing his mind & spirit along with his physique.

But, in that video he is trying too hard to come off as an "intellectual" and taking himself way too seriously.  You gotta laugh at that.

Here is my attempt at a Bob Paris pose.  The bottom one is my "Blue Steel" ha ha!!

Firstly, thank you for your compliments!  I had a great ride in competitive bodybuilding which earned me my greencard and allowed me to rub elbows on stage with the likes of a mountain like Gunter Schliercamp in 1995 (IFBB Universe) and Jean Pierre Fux!  (course they kicked my little ass .... but it was still fun!).

To answer your question ... I don't think anything could have stopped the transition into the gut monster age.  It's an interesting debate!  But human nature for excessive indulgence will never be reined in.  We will always strive to be richer, faster, stronger or bigger .... whether it's Nascar or bodybuilding ..... and our health will always be a secondary concern in these goals.   Sad ... but true.

Read it closely - I said it looks attainable. It is physiques like that which get people into bodybuilding in the first place because it appeals to them, Grant being a good case in point. Yes, you still have to take gear but the level of musculature is attainable nonethless, especially at that height. That's what bodybuilding needs more of - physiques which appeal to the broader spectrum and get more people interested in the sport and staying in the sport because they can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

First of all, 15-20 more pounds would have ruined him. I think there were a few small things he needed to fix and that would have amounted to 5-8 lbs MAX. Secondly, Chris Dickerson was gay (and I think openly) and he was Mr. O.

i watch cutlers videos and the guy doesnt take his eyes off himself for 2 seconds. he looks at himself in the mirror, grabs a plate while looking in the mirror, puts it on the bar while starring in the mirror.. after the set he walks close to the mirror to stare at himself for more... guy doesnt own a shirt with sleeves -monster low self esteem issues.

LOL...totally agree.  When I competed, I was always covered up only becasue if a caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I didn't look as big or cut as I expected to be, it would fuck with my head.

nonono,,wrong
pay attention to what i wrote,,15-20lb of the SAME QUALITY,,it would not ruin him if he could distrbute it equally all over his physiqe but he couldnt,, his physiqe was not capable of such a thing,,he was not built to hold that extra mass on him and he took his body to the max,,if he could have got even 3 extra lb of same quality mass on him he would have,,

and dickerson  was indeed a homo but! his card was the black color,,black american,, they were needed at that era and he was superb bodybuilder and black,,,you would see past the homo thing with a black guy simply because the black > homo ,, you wouldnt with a white all american guy during the 80s

Paris, like all the bodybuilders from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, did plenty of steroids.  But they didn't do GH and insulin.  That is what would be required to put on another 15-20 pounds, and that is what would destroy his symmetry and proportionality.

if you want to look like Bob Paris, don't do GH and insulin.

I was a big Bob Paris fan myself. The year he won the nationals was one of the most competitive ever.

However, during this interview, he lost me when he started referring to himself in the third person, "Bob Paris has a lot of interests in life." "Bob Paris isn't just about bodybuilding."

And Bob?

Matt,

Your posted pics of Bob Paris, today, seem somewhat sarcastic .... and perhaps derogatory?

Considering he is well retired from bodybuilding and in his 50's I think he looks healthy and happy?

Do you honestly think we can continue to cycle year after year into our 50's without repercutions?   Where is Don Youngblood today?  Or Sonny Schimdt?  Or Mike Francois?  Or Tom Prince?  Or Flex Wheeler?  Or Mike Matarazzo?  Would you like me to keep going????

How do you mean?  Wouldn't preserving your symmetry just mean not growing muscle beyond a particular level?  E.g., as a natural I can now juice up on GH and insulin to 220 and be the same 220 on lots of sauce right?  The point is not to go beyond that point, but how you do it would seem irrelevant.

no, people on gh and insulin look more blocky.  I don't know if its because cartilage grows with GH too, or that insulin causes an increase in visceral fat.  but there is a distinct difference in the way bodybuilders look from before GH and after GH, and it's not just muscles are bigger.

actually he's 48.   and while everyone ages differently, I think part of the reason why he looks the way he looks today is that he was a white boy who spent a lot of time in a tanning booth.

his still had full crazy calves in the one pic,he was the epitome of the pretty body look of the eighties with demelo, mendenhall, and had more mag's cover's than the mr o himself ,which in a way is a slap in the face of title holder, haney, yates.coleman were the biggest of their era's but not prettiest hence they got their olympia cover's and then rest of year went to the contender's or up and coming one.

Yes, exactly. GH15 you're wrong here. Except fo a few muscles (forearms, lats) Bob Paris was pretty much perfect. Adding more muscle would ruin the overall look. There IS a point at which, even if added symmetrically, it's too much muscle and would look ridiculous or un-aesthetic.
Title: Re: Bob Paris: Wise words of a visionary!
Post by: slaveboy1980 on March 16, 2007, 04:40:32 AM
And hence the fallacy in ironage thinking - that bodybuilders today look so terrible due to issues of shape of the physique rather than size.  Truth be told, if Haney kept all of his lines and competed at 300 pounds and hard, he would simply be TOO muscular, and that in itself would detract from his symmetry.

Too much muscle is a flaw in and of itself.  Rather than complaining about guts and poor lines, just acknowledge that bodybuilders today have simply packed on too much mass on their frames.

true and several of the top pros would have better than ironage physiques at lighter bodyweights!

well atleast in the 90s lol.

true, the results of a generation that worshiped the sun and frequented tanning booths. YOu see it more and more. Go to Southern California, even with all the plastic surgery, anyone over 40 has skin like leather, dry, wrinkled and grayish in color. You can even see sun damage in people under 40, even in their 20's. Ironic that the most vain will look the worst when the get older.

Also the extreme low bodyfat that people obsess over actually makes them look years older. It does somehting weird to the skin. And it never looks the same, same as with people that have stretched their skin out.

Well...yes and no. The guts and expanding waistlines are ALSO a factor in ruining the physiques of today. It's NOT one or the other, it's both: the guts/waistlines AND too much muscle. Just look at some of the amateurs coming up who don't have a lot of muscle yet for some reason have guts! ???

If you took Ronnie today and kept the gut but removed 40 lbs of muscle he STILL wouldn't have a good physique. The same holds true for Cutler and now sadly, Dexter.

the reason is the increase in adipose (intra adbominal fat) caused by gh and insulin

And I give you the ironage physique updated to today's "drugs":

The racist jokes you see around here are really tedious.

But I have to say: everytime I see that picture of Ronnie with a huge belly and his arms over his head, he reminds me of a gorilla.

Arce, thanks for your compliment.  Are you still working with Karo?  I hope he has a comeback.

PS -- found this old pic of me at 18... my very first show.  I wish my waist was still that small!  There were no "guts" on the Pro's I aspired to in the 80's.

Seriously, why'd you give up competitive BB?

Many reasons.  I simply didn't like the direction is was going in ... the drug issue been the main one.  Years later the proof was in the pudding with names like Munzer, Beniziza, Sonny Schimdt, Don Youngblood, Tom Prince, Flex Wheeler, Mike Francois, MIke Matarrazzo, Orville Burke ... man I could keep going and going.  And those are just the Pro's....

I didn't like the way the IFBB ran a mafia-type domination of politics on the sport and prevented any chance of mainstream sponsors ever coming in and helping the sport to grow.  Giving any mainstream sponsors a chance would have meant sacrificing the tight power hold that they had on the sport.  They chose to keep a dictatorship control on the sport instead.  Bad choice really .... because the sport is dying a slow death now in my opinion.

What a different place we might be in today if we had seen ad's with marketable young guys, like Bob Paris or Shawn Ray, flashing his smile after a work-out on TV saying...  "When I'm dieting for the Mr. Olympia ... it's only the classic taste of Diet Pepsi that keeps me focused and smiling everyday!"

Orville Burke was an anaesthesiolgist's mistake, right? And I just read on another thread that Mike Francois had colon cancer. You blame those two on drugs?

I think all of these guys live in denial.  I don't want to sound cynical ...just being honest. They all say "Well, my family had a predispostion for heart disease (or kidney failure).  It was genetic."

Well, if they knew that then why take a boatload of drugs to exacerbate their genetic risks?  No Pro is going to ever going to admit "Yeah, I knew I was taking a crazy risk ... but I said fvck it and went for it anyway!"

All I can go on is the fact that I really didn't take a fraction of what the guys take today ... and my doctor still told me I had slightly elevated kidney and liver enzymes and my blood pressure and Cholesterol were both up during a cycle.

When I arrived in the US and stayed with the (late) Paul de Mayo  .... he laughed at me when I told him the doses I was taking and said "You're wasting your time. You're pissing into the wind!"

Paul won the USA and turned Pro a month later.

I say this with all due respect - he looks a little like Ted Bundy just before his death.  I say this because Ted was known to be a very handsome man.  For those saying Bob has not aged so well, I don't think that is the case.  He looks around the same age Ted was when he got the chair (42).

I wonder how Bob dealt with all of that?  When a gay male hits on me, it is similar to a woman hitting on me who is not my type.  I am polite about it, but try to get out of the situation in a subtle kind of way.  I wonder how Bob dealt with a barrage of women approaching him at expos and the like?

It still amazes me how these "aesthetic" bodybuilders think they may be appealing, or at least make bodybuilding appealing, to the general public. The fact is, physiques like Paris's, Labrada's, Makkawy's, Benfatto's, Ray's, etc. are still disgusting to most people outside the bodybuilding world. When I was a teenager, one ex-girlfriend of mine said "I like muscular men". I replied "Someone like Stallone?" and she said "No, he is TOO muscular". Bodybuilding will NEVER be mainstream, even if it returns to the "Ironage Era". Stop being delusional.
