Say Hey!
-
It's the most famous but it's not even the best in World Series history, let alone baseball history. Those older games have the advantage of mythical status, and that catch involves a famous name, all of which has helped make it more than it is.
Notice that if he'd judged the ball better and gone back in a straight line, he'd have had time to turn around, wouldn't have needed to make the catch over the shoulder!! :-\
Other catches on this clip are obviously better. Doesn't even include the great Joe Rudi '72 World Series back-handed catch at the wall in the 9th inning, which was better and saved the game.

Say Hey!
Definitely one of the greatest. A ball hit directly at you is one of the hardest to judge. And an over the shoulder catch is very difficult. Plus it was the World Series.
-
based on the circumstances yes it is one of the greatest...maybe not THE greatest, but it ranks right up there

Take a close look and notice that it wasn't hit directly at him-he ran back under it in less than efficient fashion, obviously misjudging where it was. Which forced the last-second over the shoulder catch. He made it more dramatic than was needed.
-
Hate to beat on Toxics drum, but that catch isn't impressive.
Cricket wins for this type of shit:
No gloves, heavier ball... etc etc

Good, but not better than some of the baseball catches even factoring in the differences.

I did take a close look. It was hit directly at him. I played the outfield in high school and I'm a weekend softball warrior (in the outfield). Those are the toughest balls to judge. I'd much rather run left or right for a ball than back.

If it was as you claim hit directly at him, and given that he didn't turn around, it would have hit him in the back of the head! LOL No, he ran under it, in less than efficient fashion, forcing a more dramatic catch than necesssary.
I like your sports enthusiasm but you just don't get it sometimes. ;D You barely acknowledge that you're an insansely biased homer when it comes to kobe and the lakers, as yet another example. Glad you enjoy it though, that's the main thing. ;)

Who is talking about Kobe and Lakers? ???
Pumpster have you ever played in the outfield? (I suspect the answer is "no").

Still waiting for Bum to support this bizarre theory that while running back facing away from the ball, with the ball supposedly going straight at him, it didn't hit him in the head? Explain that one hahaahahahah I'd say Bum got beaned with baseballs a few too many times.

I suspect the reason you have no clue that a ball hit directly at you can be either a line drive or a high fly ball, and that these are very difficult to judge, is you have probably never played the game. Or have you? Correct me if I'm wrong.
I actually catch fly balls every Sunday. :)

Wrong on all counts, have played all major sports well. Your judgement here sux, exactly as it did with your pathetic judgement of the Colt's defense.
Still waiting on that "explanation" as to how he didn't get hit in the back of the head, following your logic that it went right at him, vs. over his head as i know it did, with him running somewhat clumsily under it.
I have no doubt that you juggle balls all the time. :-*

Who is talking about the Colts' defense? LOL.
I stand corrected. So you "have played all major sports well." [stiffled laughter :)] I just thought if you actually played the outfield you'd have a better appreciation for, and understanding of, how difficult it is to judge balls hit directly at you. I suspect you either have never played the outfield, or just were not very good. Otherwise, you would have known before I told you that a ball hit directly at you can be either a line drive or a fly ball.
Also, I'll admit that not everyone who plays the outfield agrees with me. Some have trouble charging low line drives, which I find rather easy.

I realize that having your ass handed to you creates defensiveness, the need to strike out so to speak with empty speculation on my skillz. LOL

Uh huh. And which one of us keeps trying to change the subject? LOL . . . . (that would be you). Dude I don't know if you've ever played the game, but it sure doesn't sound like it. This doesn't mean you cannot have an opinion. It just means your opinion is coming out of your rear end. :) Hey maybe you should watch ESPN. Have you seen the commercial with the guy talking sports out of his butt? Hahahaha! That's YOU! ;D

Bro, what is your deal? Why the pressing need to carry yourself like an annoying know-it-all little pole smoker?
Your arrogance and forthright judgements in every single one of your posts is extremely laughable. Take it down a notch with a nice chaser of humility and come to grips with the notion that you're not always right with your opinions. (a la Michael Irvin being a good football announcer--that one was a dandy, by the way!)
hmmm....k? ;)

I agree. Very arrogant. It doesn't bother me, but I completely understand how it rubs people the wrong way.
-
My favorite non-catch of all time was when Canseco got hit on top of his head with the ball and it bounced over the fence for a homer ;D
-
Montana to Clark in the 81 NFC Championship Game. Not only did it put the Cowboys in the basement for the next decade, but it set up one of the most successful runs of dominance in the '80's.

you're such an ass....obviously he meant the ball was hit straight at him over his head. yes those are by far the toughest balls for an outfielder to judge. quit letting your personal bias against everyone on here get in the way of a decent discussion.

If he can't communicate he's reduced to the level of your shitty post. All i've done is support my position, dumbass.
As far as your "observation", the ball would have had to be a fly with a big arc to go right over his head, which would've meant that there was time to turn around if he hadn't misjudged it.
Wrong again, and still nowhere near the best catch, only the most famous.

are you retarded? seriously....you don't think it's possible for a MLB player to hit a line drive over a centre fielders head? ::)
you're so stupid it's funny

Say Hey!
the definition of pwned! look ma...i dont need no puss ass gloves to catch.. ;)
and again! ...poopah a basebaler would NEVER get this one!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2751861538415262473&q=cricket+catch
you think THAT ws good..pfft..watch this
cricket came with the brits to the USA...then cricket took a shit and baseball ws born :)
-
the hardest ball to catch is a line drive directly at you. because you can't tell the linear velocity(i think thats the term). when the ball is hit to your left or right, you can estimate its velocity, acceleration, and angle where it might land. a ball directly over your head is somewhere in the middle.. this is why in the majors you see guys drifting to the ball,, even though 95% of coaches teach you to get under the ball first -but that just makes it harder to catch.
you really cant say there is a greatest catch because theres so many variables. a routine flyball that gets lost in the lights is just has hard as an over the shoulder. i think the best catches are when you sacrifice your body. like guys slamming there heads into a wall.

I agree. I hate them, because you have to make split second decision on whether to charge, freeze, back peddle, turn and run. I don't get burned often, but I still hate them.

like jim edmonds the other night. one of the greatest centerfielders ever, but had one hit directly at him and he looked like a clown, ended up catching it on his knees
