It's the most famous but it's not even the best in World Series history, let alone baseball history. Those older games have the advantage of mythical status, and that catch involves a famous name, all of which has helped make it more than it is.

Notice that if he'd judged the ball better and gone back in a straight line, he'd have had time to turn around, wouldn't have needed to make the catch over the shoulder!!

Other catches on this clip are obviously better. Doesn't even include the great Joe Rudi '72 World Series back-handed catch at the wall in the 9th inning, which was better and saved the game.

Definitely one of the greatest.  A ball hit directly at you is one of the hardest to judge.  And an over the shoulder catch is very difficult.  Plus it was the World Series.

Take a close look and notice that it wasn't hit directly at him-he ran back under it in less than efficient fashion, obviously misjudging where it was. Which forced the last-second over the shoulder catch. He made it more dramatic than was needed.

I did take a close look.  It was hit directly at him.  I played the outfield in high school and I'm a weekend softball warrior (in the outfield).  Those are the toughest balls to judge.  I'd much rather run left or right for a ball than back.

I suspect the reason you have no clue that a ball hit directly at you can be either a line drive or a high fly ball, and that these are very difficult to judge, is you have probably never played the game.  Or have you?  Correct me if I'm wrong.

I stand corrected.  So you "have played all major sports well."  [stiffled laughter  ]  I just thought if you actually played the outfield you'd have a better appreciation for, and understanding of, how difficult it is to judge balls hit directly at you.  I suspect you either have never played the outfield, or just were not very good.  Otherwise, you would have known before I told you that a ball hit directly at you can be either a line drive or a fly ball.

Also, I'll admit that not everyone who plays the outfield agrees with me.  Some have trouble charging low line drives, which I find rather easy.
