It doesn't surprise me that in your personal experience 75% of them want us there because you probably didn't talk to people who didn't want you there.... you were in, i'm assuming, Areas in or near that were in American control. I doubt you were casually strolling around some village by your self talking to the locals miles away from any Americans.

I see what you are getting at here but there are other reasonable explanations:
- This is happening during an on going battle for the city, many people are probably just indoors hiding and trying to stay out of harms way.
- Most people don't fully believe Saddam is not in control or permanently removed from power, therefore they don;t want to risk being filmed as ones that were cheering the Americans on for fear of future reprisals when Saddam takes the city back.

I know all you have are news accounts to go off of, but like I said it is very comparable to Korea...the liberal people in both countries don't realize. They have forgotten what is was like already...kind of like libs here have forgotten 9/11 aside from their CTs.

The top photo toppling the statue was a staged event for the Western media.
The crowd cheering were Iraqis (Northern Kurds) brought in for the event while troops blocked off the perimeter so they could film. They didn't have near enough people so they pulled in for a tight shot. It happens all the time in film making. We've shot seens where we can take 50 extras and rotate them in such a way to give the impression of a crowd of thousands.
I've seen longshots of the 2nd photo though, and those crowds looked pretty authentic to me.
I don't know how many actually burned US flags though. There were a few, but the footage could easily have been misleading, in that they were only a few isolated cases of it, and not the huge outpouring of anti-US sentiment as much of the media is claiming.

It was happening during a battle, anyone with any sense would have been hiding. Who walks the streets when an invading army rolls into town with guns blazing? You think people are that stupid to get filmed and then maybe Saddam retains his power? Then what happens to them?
That's why there was no crowds.

I was there when we rolled in..they were all very happy..we all thought then they were full of shit.....basically anybody not willing to shoot anybody who makes a peep was going to face an insurgency there. They were all very happy to get about killing each other.

You know if it weren't for oil and we could somehow guarantee that we'd be ok if we left..it would be great...some guy comes up on stage ......all the rags are looking at him with murderous intent "we've decided to leave..give us 48 hours...all Iraqi cities are free fire zones for the next 48 hours as we convoy out......have a nice day"..then we pack and leave. It would take much longer but we could collapse to the bigger bases and pull out of all the cities.....They'd all go into shock..and the Europeans would be whining up a storm.
