What do you ladies think about this new birth control pill that ends menstrual cycles indefinitely? Do you feel comfortable with that?
There are already pills (available in Europe) that reduce periods to four times a year. With this newly approved pill your period is gone for good--until you stop taking the pill.
Years ago, I remember reading that monthly periods prepare the body for the experience and pain of child birth and therefore it served vital function, but these days with epidurals and C-sections, childbirth does not have to be a painful process. With this in mind, what is your reaction to this new birth control pill that ends a woman’s period?
Agency Approves a Birth Control Pill Halting Periods Indefinitely
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON, May 22 (AP) — The first birth-control pill meant to put a stop to a woman’s monthly period indefinitely has won federal approval, the manufacturer said on Tuesday.
When taken daily, the pill, called Lybrel and made by Wyeth, can halt women’s menstrual periods indefinitely and prevent pregnancies.
It is the latest oral contraceptive approved by the Food and Drug Administration to depart from the 21-days-on, 7-days-off regimen that had been standard since birth-control pill sales began in the 1960s, and is the first made to put off periods altogether when taken without a break . . .

erm, no...
you just keep taking the pills without a break, then you get no bleed.
don't know really. sounds like a strange thing to do to me.
Your theory about preparing the body for childbirth is an interesting one. The natural monthly cycle is, after all, just the shedding of an egg which has not been fertilised.

I care what women think. That's why I'm in this forum. Why are you here?
-
I wouldn't take it. There is something about not having a period that makes me uncomfortable. Its messing with nature. The idea is awesome, and women haved probably wished for this day...but I'm not interested. Plus...I enjoy my week of bitching...and having an excuse!!! ;D

In the news stories I saw yesterday pretty much everyone (the doctors, reporters) were welcoming this as the next evolution of the birth control pill and putting a positive spin on it. They minimized any future risks as minimal if not non-existent.
As was mentioned in the news reports, there are a small percentage of women for whom periods approach the level of illness (extreme headaches, excessive bleeding, and other traumas/complications). For this small percentage the new pill would seem appropriate as a medical treatment, but most of the doctors and women interviewed seemed to endorse it as a convenient lifestyle choice. When pitched and used in this way, I see red flags galore. :-\

Agree
And won't all pills work this way if you continue taking the active ones?
I suppose it would be fine to do once in awhile if your period was falling on a vacation week but to stop the flow completely seems like at some point it could possibly be harmful - if not now maybe years down the road ???

Ok kiddies, enough with the slam fest. >:(
Linda...Mike and Bay go back a bit and have NO problems with each other.
Bay...thank you for the info. I think most women would love to not have to deal with the monthly friend but it is a part of the natural cycle of women and messing with that chemically is not a good idea.
-
I I see red flags galore.
You're right. Also it sounds like the news stories on this in America are somewhat different to the ones we're getting in England.
Makes no sense to me.
But it's a girly thing.
Used to be, getting a bleed every month meant you weren't pregnant. That was long before they invented condoms. Only kidding

My final post on this subject: Go with the flow. It's natural.
That's how come women live longer: we bleed and we cry.

I'm one of those women with debilitating dysmenorrhea. The "regular" pill already takes care of the problem, in fact, that's why it was prescribed for me, so the "new" pill is basically just a convenience. Besides, whatever happened to the miracle drug Anaprox? I don't know. I think wise women should wait till the first crop of guinea pigs drop from cardiovascular disease, cervical cancer, infertility, mental disease, or whatever the hell else side effects will be the result of f*cking that far with mother nature.
-
Looking good Laura!! :o
Linda, I love those sparkly lips :)

The Depo shot has already been used to stop menstruation. I have a friend who hasn't had her period in like 3 years!! To me that doesn't seem good, you should come off it sometimes. They have already found that prolonged use can lead to bone loss that does not reverse itself after stopping.
The pushing to make it mandatory for girls to get the HPV vaccine would of been using those girls as guinea pigs. Problems have already been associated with the vaccine and no long term studies have been done, plus it might make a person more susceptible to the other strains of cancer cause papilloma virus.
I found it appalling that that Texas Senator wanted to mandate a vaccine for girls that is not even a general health threat.
ok, that was off topic, deedees guinea pig comment reminded me of that.
ps- Laura can I have your abs? Looking good!!
-

tee hee. thank you dahling

I found it appalling that that Texas Senator wanted to mandate a vaccine for girls that is not even a general health threat.
I found that shocking as well. Even more shocking is that people couldn’t see it for what it was. He was a tool of the pharmaceutical company that made the drug. Would you be surprised to learn that he or a member of his family is on the board of directors for the company that makes that drug or holds substantial stock in it? I wouldn’t it.
A similar scandal has recently unfolded in higher education. It turns out that several Directors of Financial Aid at a number of big schools across the country were recommending select student loan companies to students. The companies they were recommending were the ones the DFA held stock in or was secretly paid by. >:(
-
It's all about selling more & extremely overpriced meds by the strangle hold that the FDA/AMA have on US citizens.
It's the Same pill, but all month long, right? Or did I miss something?
Ok,Now It's a "NEW PRODUCT!" ::) And they will charge a absurd markup for the few extra pills. Just like "Prescription strength" Ibuprofen & Naproxin(Aleve). Yes you can take way more IB and ALeve than the label says, ask your Dr. THen Check the price at the pharmacy compared to the very same compound OTC and you will Freak!
As far as making life better for some women - GREAT! But that should have been as easy and cheap as the Dr telling her to walk down to the local pharma and picking up some extras BC pills right off the shelf with out a 'script as is done over much of the planet.
This is really about 1000%+ markup for the well connected pharma corps, protected by our politicians.
THE HPV shot is another great example. THey almost got a major wad of cash out of that thing. Forced consumption. THey ought to stick all the Politicians who vote for it with the stuff and let them test it.
-
The female body is used to the 4 week cycle, postponing it for years does not sound like a wise plan. Besides, long term risks are not clear atm, it's probably been in testing for 5-10 years, but that's not really longterm considering women might use these contraceptives for 20+ years.
-
I'm one of those women ... I think wise women should wait till the first crop of guinea pigs drop from cardiovascular disease, cervical cancer, infertility, mental disease, or whatever the hell else side effects will be the result of f*cking that far with mother nature.
I'm coming back to this thread if I may. I said I wouldn't, but that was because silly people were being misognistic and are still posting their posing pix on a thread about monthlies. Whatever...
I've decided I don't mind finally admitting my age. I'm proud of it.
So. I went on the pill in 1972. I took it for 13 years, till I was 29. This was like the first pill, the original one, the full-on one, long before they invented mini-pills. I was very fortunate I think. I went to the free clinic with a girlfriend when we were 16. There were no tests, they just handed it over to us. This was in Toronto. Susie developed diabetes and later died of Aids. Whatever. They did say that the BC pill may have brought on the diabetes, but they didn't know. The Aids was obviously because she didn't bother with condoms and made a mistake with a guy who'd also taken risks.
So, I don't know whether I was one of those guinea pigs. It was fine for me. My period was practically non existent and I moved it to Monday by taking one extra per month for a few months, so as I wouldn't have it on weekends. So it was a few tampons on a Monday and perhaps the Tuesday. I had no PMT and no troubles. In fact, I had no sympathy for women doing their calling in sick thing and when my female staff called in and said they couldn't come to work for girly reasons, I'd tell everyone in the office they had diahorrea...
I'm digressing. I don't understand the reasoning behind this "new invention" (Other than, of course, your observation that some drug co. is making megabucks). We knew in the 70s that if you didn't want a period, you just kept taking the pills without a break. I never did that but I knew women who did.
I guess I've just been very fortunate and have also always tried to keep the right mindset. We are supposed to bleed once a month or else make babies.
xL
ps: I may have some kind of "mental disease", but I think that's genetic, socio, environmental or something. Only kidding...
pps: They did tell us in the 70s that it might perhaps cause infertility. They didn't know. But I didn't want children then anyways, I was busy with a career. And that didn't happen, because as soon as I went off the pill, (I was coming up to 30 and thought I might get ready to have kids, so I decided to come off it). So I jumped straight into a "serious" relationship. I got pregnant within 3 months and had a 'termination' (abortion to you)... So I was fertile, immediately after 13 years on the the first ever pill. No regrets whatsoever, it was a doddle, but I obviously should have insisted that he wear condoms for longer than the first 3 months.
And I have no regrets at all about not spreading my dna around and pro-creating.
What I need to think about next is whether to take the HRT !
(I don't quite understand that. We're supposed to stop bleeding around 45-50. Instead, nowadays, they sell us a new wonder drug hormone replacement which stops the hot flushes and the weird feelings, but which makes us continue to bleed. I can't figure it out.
-
Nice post Linda...Linda's very casual, "So I'd take a extra pill ..." is, simple and effective, but not a viable option to USA women unless they want to mail order extra or go to some other means to get extra.
Maybee there were some cool Drs out there prescribing extras, but I bet they were/ are very few.
They are all to worried about towing the HMO-AMA-FDA-DEA line. And with damn good reason.
THey cant risk loosing their precious littel degree. What they gonna do, hang sheet-rock?
That is after they get out of jail for prescription violations.
-
What, you have to go back for more every month in the US nowadays? Waaaa. They used to give us 3 or 6 months or a years worth and tell us to come back when anything strange happened.
They give free condoms away nowadays (and always have done, which is how come AIDS did not become an epidemic in England) at the sexual health clinics here. Do they there?
Anyways, my answer to this thread: you takes them pills, you takes your chances.

How much of a particular med they hand out depends on the Insh co. and/or the Dr.
They are giving my wife 3 mos pills at a trip, but if you were to short yourself at month 3 .... you have a problem.
Just getting a Dr appt in the USA is a pain often. Wait months to establish care or see a specialist. ANd who the hell want to go at all for some stupid birthcontrol pills? They are OTC across much of the planet.
ALso a lot of the govt planned parnethood clinics were cut funding, or eliminated. esp abortion providers (Bush 8 yrs).
So good luck for people in marginal condition even getting into the main health sys and affording it...
Oh well, more poor people= cheaper labor and a larger pool for the military. Warm the heart of the rich.

i bleed (I'm being sarcastic but also am attempting to understand...

Nice casual
Not quite sure of your definition of casual, because that thing I posted about most definitely was not. Anyways thanks for understandin...

No offense intended Linda, I meant it's so easy for gals in countries other than the USA to do that kind of thing, that it's no big deal to them. My wife goes absolutely crazy here in the USA. In her country you can buy anything OTC. And personaly, I'd take the Bangkok Drs and hospitals over any I been to in the USA in a heartbeat.
THey also have MORE meds to chose from, at a fraction of the cost.
The US medical industy is a sham. It's a absolute joke.
-
No offense intended ...It's an absolute joke.
I didn't take offense darlin' and I'm fully aware that it's not a joke.
It's getting scary. I only lived in the US (NY for a year and Fla for 9 months) very briefly and I never got ill, so I obviously don't know the full story there. In Canada (I lived in Toronto for 17 years), our employers paid our insurance and I didn't get sick anyways because I was young and anything else like dentistry and eyespectacles I gladly paid for.
About England. I came back to live in my home country... Here's the history: after the 2nd world war, around the 1950s, they set up the National Health Service. It was something to be proud of, it was supposed to be a big social umbrella. Everyone paid lots of taxes and were glad to when the economy began to boom again.
Don't know what I'm going on about, I've lost the plot. Everything has gone pear shaped. Apparently there are far too many old people nowadays and it's costing gazillions to give them all hip replacements, whereas children with leukemia can't get drugs. I don't understand and I don't know whether I'll live till I get old. Or will want to. I may retire to a commune on a faraway island and die alone.
Thankfully I don't get sick though, so there's still hope.
Should I take the HRT?
xL
-
I doubt I'd ever take something like that. For about 1 week everymonth, I normally scream for a hysterectomy,
...then, I'm back to my senses again. Looks good at first blush, ...but wouldn't want to mess with nature so drastically. If I got really desperate, ...then maybe taking a low dose birth control pill could reduce the agony to 4 days, ...but absolutely no menses at all? ...I don't think so. Fortunately, the last few have been somewhat bearable. I didn't cry or scream once, ...and I didn't take anyone's head off either. :D

Have any of you tried this pill yet? Do you know anyone who has? Reactions? ???

no and no. I have a friend who has been on the depo shot for years. I think going years without a period is not good. Nice, but not good in the long run.

2nd post on a woman's area... difficult to attempt to read, let alone deal with..
okay, I'm coming up with the real deal now. I took BC pills for 13 years, I was 14-29 or something....

this pill shit new news is rubbish
We've always known we can take the pill for 28 days and have a bleed or else forget to take it other days and get pregnant. This new hormonal breakthough was supposed to be profound???
Not: (read Germaine Greer or google sufferagettes or something else).
nowadays I can go straight to the Dr and be prescribed Hormones. I've known since 1988 or 99 that i could take them every day and stop a few days and avoid weekends, which I did. Hello boys? Girls get real, in my teenage years the pill was freedom,
& yours is what?
something blokes ask about on the internet?

Sorry Bay!!

oh for f**k's sake, I didn't realise i was posting on a website thread with this as a topic on a girly thing about a bc pill which halts monthly periods indefinitely. What on god's gorgeous earth does your figure have to do with birth control pills or monthly periods, or anything even remotely to do with indefinitely~?
Obviously I don't need to read your website or the rest of this thread, it's horrrifc
-
quite how come you allow daft ugly (did a woman ever get a word in edgewitchsideways) blokes to post on your female thread is beyond me...
I'll shut up now. Tonight anyways. Due to your absoutely ridicolous webchatsite..
I'll count my 28 days and you won't okay?

Its all about Big proffit on a "New" drug, and extra Dr fees. Simple as that.
Thats the USA Medical & Pharma industrial complex at work.
Worse than mafia, they have standards.
