Birth Control Pill Halts Monthly Periods Indefinitely
« on: May 23, 2007, 09:13:49 AM »
What do you ladies think about this new birth control pill that ends menstrual cycles indefinitely?  Do you feel comfortable with that?

There are already pills (available in Europe) that reduce periods to four times a year.  With this newly approved pill your period is gone for good--until you stop taking the pill.

Years ago, I remember reading that monthly periods prepare the body for the experience and pain of child birth and therefore it served vital function, but these days with epidurals and C-sections, childbirth does not have to be a painful process.  With this in mind, what is your reaction to this new birth control pill that ends a woman’s period?

Agency Approves a Birth Control Pill Halting Periods Indefinitely

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON, May 22 (AP) — The first birth-control pill meant to put a stop to a woman’s monthly period indefinitely has won federal approval, the manufacturer said on Tuesday.

When taken daily, the pill, called Lybrel and made by Wyeth, can halt women’s menstrual periods indefinitely and prevent pregnancies.

It is the latest oral contraceptive approved by the Food and Drug Administration to depart from the 21-days-on, 7-days-off regimen that had been standard since birth-control pill sales began in the 1960s, and is the first made to put off periods altogether when taken without a break . . .

erm, no...

you just keep taking the pills without a break, then you get no bleed.
don't know really.  sounds like a strange thing to do to me.

Your theory about preparing the body for childbirth is an interesting one.  The natural monthly cycle is, after all, just the shedding of an egg which has not been fertilised.

I wouldn't take it.  There is something about not having a period that makes me uncomfortable.  Its messing with nature.  The idea is awesome, and women haved probably wished for this day...but I'm not interested.  Plus...I enjoy my week of bitching...and having an excuse!!!  ;D

In the news stories I saw yesterday pretty much everyone (the doctors, reporters) were welcoming this as the next evolution of the birth control pill and putting a positive spin on it.  They minimized any future risks as minimal if not non-existent.

As was mentioned in the news reports, there are a small percentage of women for whom periods approach the level of illness (extreme headaches, excessive bleeding, and other traumas/complications).  For this small percentage the new pill would seem appropriate as a medical treatment, but most of the doctors and women interviewed seemed to endorse it as a convenient lifestyle choice.  When pitched and used in this way, I see red flags galore.  :-\

Agree

And won't all pills work this way if you continue taking the active ones?

I suppose it would be fine to do once in awhile if your period was falling on a vacation week but to stop the flow completely seems like at some point it could possibly be harmful - if not now maybe years down the road  ???

Ok kiddies, enough with the slam fest.   >:(

Linda...Mike and Bay go back a bit and have NO problems with each other.

Bay...thank you for the info.  I think most women would love to not have to deal with the monthly friend but it is a part of the natural cycle of women and messing with that chemically is not a good idea.

You're right.  Also it sounds like the news stories on this in America are somewhat different to the ones we're getting in England.

Makes no sense to me.

But it's a girly thing.

Used to be, getting a bleed every month meant you weren't pregnant.  That was long before they invented condoms.  Only kidding
xL

My final post on this subject:  Go with the flow.  It's natural.
That's how come women live longer:  we bleed and we cry.

I'm one of those women with debilitating dysmenorrhea. The "regular" pill already takes care of the problem, in fact, that's why it was prescribed for me, so the "new" pill is basically just a convenience. Besides, whatever happened to the miracle drug Anaprox? I don't know.  I think wise women should wait till the first crop of guinea pigs drop from cardiovascular disease, cervical cancer, infertility, mental disease, or whatever the hell else side effects will be the result of f*cking that far with mother nature.

The Depo shot has already been used to stop menstruation.  I have a friend who hasn't had her period in like 3 years!!   To me that doesn't seem good, you should come off it sometimes.  They have already found that prolonged use can lead to bone loss that does not reverse itself after stopping.

The pushing to make it mandatory for girls to get the HPV vaccine would of been using those girls as guinea pigs.  Problems have already been associated with the vaccine and no long term studies have been done, plus it might make a person more susceptible to the other strains of cancer cause papilloma virus.

I found it appalling that that Texas Senator wanted to mandate a vaccine for girls that is not even a general health threat.

ok, that was off topic, deedees guinea pig comment reminded me of that.

ps- Laura can I have your abs?   Looking good!!
