1 in 5 Americans believe Sun revolves around the Earth
A light bulb appears over my head. I finally get it.
For the democratic process to run properly it necessitates the voter to have some knowledge of what he is voting on. For it to work properly it requires voters to cast their votes based on an educated opinion. If you are going to vote on something like stem cell research you should at least know what it is, correct?
Sadly, that isn’t how many American vote, as is obvious when during an election year people are talking about whether or not someone “looks presidential” and whether the person looks “likeable”. Well the question is, how can Americans vote on such things as global warming, stem cell research, cloning and what have you when basic scientific fundamental concepts fly right over our heads.
"American adults in general do not understand what molecules are (other than that they are really small). Fewer than a third can identify DNA as a key to heredity. Only about 10 percent know what radiation is. One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century." Said Jon D. Miller, a political scientists who directs the Center for Biomedical Communications at the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, he regularly surveys Americans for his clients which include the National Science Foundation on the public’s knowledge and attitudes towards science in general.I mean, lets be honest, if you don’t know what a fucking cell is how can you understand what stem cell research is enough to vote on it?
And according to this guy most Americans don’t know what a cell is. Then it hit me. There is a reason why people are fighting so hard to get creationism taught in the public schools along side evolution as a scientific alternative. Like I said, it hit me. And it hit me hard.
Americans, on top of not having a clue what a cell is or what radiation is or even that the Earth revolves around the Sun are letting religious leaders dictate to them what to vote on issues that would take knowledge of basic scientific fundamentals, because I am assuming that they are assuming that since these religious leaders are supposedly moral and ethical “authorities” they should be qualified to figure out where we stand on these scientific issues, but who is to say that they even know these basic scientific concepts?
What a dangerous misstep.
Fact: Polls show that in general, people who adhere to fundamentalist views are not well educated.
Those things go hand in hand. He says that every time he goes on the radio to talk about his findings he gets people from the listening area sending him cards in the mail saying that they will pray for him. So I take it even though they don’t understand what he is talking about when he refers to “DNA” they know that people that use big words like that are most likely going to hell.

If you were SMART...you would know that america is not a DEMOCRACY...IT IS A REPUBLIC and the only thing that would even mildly suggest that there is anything democratic about it is the fact that the public "IS ALLOWED" to vote....even though their votes are not counted because presidents are SELECTED...not elected. Outside of that it is a DICTATORSHIP under the control of CORPORATIONS.
Is a light going off in your head now???
When does the president confront the masses in times when a decision must be made.....NEVER!!!!...therefore there is NO DEMOCRACY. So called representatives are bought by corporations and made to speak for the corporation as oppose to the people making their representative hear their wants and then make them known to the president or government. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN AMERICA. So regardless of what you feel about the intelligence level of americans...and I will admit they are not the smartest people by a long shot, you must first understand the felonious system of government at work in america to know why america is in the shape that it is in.
-
Not true at all. Too many vairables involved. Religion is the most responsible for ignorance though.
Intelligence, by any of the usual scales, is definitely normally distributed (the measurement of it deliberately makes it so). Inluding religion won't alter the distribution being normal, but if you were to draw two distributions, one for relgious and one for nonreligious people, the distributions typically don't have the same mean.
-
Too many variables are at play in such a study where the source is unknown. Are the people being surveyed teenagers, middle aged or senile elderly?
What part of the country, or is it a national poll?
...etc, etc.
Ignorance will always exist...do you think the people who have to work 50, 60, 70+ hours a week to pay the bills, give a shit where buttfuck, Afghanistan is, or what natural selection is?
-
stupider is not a word. i hope you were being sarcastic.

Thanks for the suggestion, But I've already read an official explanation that I'm quite satisfied with. Tell me your opinion about Tower 7. Was it a "controlled demolition"? ;D
Were the sheeple lead into a war for oil controlled by transnational corporations? Did America REALLY land a man on the moon? How about cold fusion, did nefarious energy companies hide the truth so they could continue to profit from the idiot populace ? I'm really interested in your thoughts. :-*

9/11 was an inside job alright. It's ingenious how they can plant explosives all over the twin towers and not one leak get outabout them, but yet can't plant weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to further fool the masses. You think that would be a pretty easy thing to do. Especially to calm the nutjobs (or true patriots) down. B

I have to disagree. EGOISM is the most responsible for ignorance, not religion.
Egoism:
Pronunciation: \ˈē-gə-ˌwi-zəm, -gō-ˌi- also ˈe-\
Function: noun
1 a: a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action b: a doctrine that individual self-interest is the valid end of all actions
2: excessive concern for oneself with or without exaggerated feelings of self-importance

whether or not most people know what a molecule is or dna and how it links to heredity is irrelevent to whether or not they are intelligent. Some people or just more informed than others and some have other things going on in there lives other than reading about science. Most voters make the most educated desisions they can and usually both sides have some valid points and intelligent people on both sides of an issue can dissagree. This doesnt make one side stupider than the other.

American has an intelligence problem. Can't deny that.
-
To commemorate my 100th post on getbig ( Ive been a member since 05') I have come up with the following observation; Requiring intelligence to vote would be tantamount to the literacy test newly freed slaves were given to prevent them from voting. This rings true today where illiterate and incompetent people of all races would be unable to take part in the political process. Where it gets interesting is this- Do these individuals honestly have any bearing on the political process anyway? What would change? I honestly believe nothing. The same people you see in power now, would be in power anyway.

And it's true, the average American is well below what we should consider average in intelligence. Not only that, but they are selfish to boot, so they basically vote for the guy they could have a beer with and who promises to save them thier tax dollars. It's that simple, sadly.

I just read the book "The Jungle" and that's exactly what they did back in the early 1900s. The politicians would have big parties and give away money and free booze in trade for votes.
