That story was ripped off from the book "think and grow rich" that Arnold read in the late sixties. This is not a true story at all. I used to believe this until I read the book, and I read somewhere that this is a self help book arnold read and utilized.

And not much different from that chick on LOST who started working on her suntan the day after her plane crashed and half the passengers were killed. I mean, what's the big friggin' deal? Apparently he's in some hot water over this. He was accused of being 'callous and out of touch with the situation', and using the dumbells as a publicity stunt. Arnold responded:
"That's rediculous. I wanted to see the area first hand and let people know that we are going to help them. When I saw the weights, I just picked them up and someone took a picture of it. If these families want to work out I will personally buy them memberships at a gym. We are going to do everything we can to help these people."
I think it's a great pic and people are just looking for something to whine about. His heart's in the right place.

A recent press release from Arnold's office addressing allegations of insensitivity:
"Governor Schwazenegger is deeply concerned for the families who have been displaced by the fires in the Lake Tahoe area. He is exploring every possible route to ensure that the State of California is lending all the assistance it can to these families."
In response to a reporter's question about the situation, Arnold said:
"I have even seen photos of the house which had the dumbells before it burned down. The gym was very basic, but it's still a terrible loss. I don't think the dumbells were damaged by the heat though. I'm sure they'll still be useable. They felt fine. And no one was injured, which is very important."

Delays in rebuilding of the Lake Tahoe Community Center have Arnold on the run.
From the Tahoe Picayune, Oct 9:
Unforeseen problems and delays have plagued the construction of the new Lake Tahoe Community Center in spite of the best efforts of contractors, according to sources involved with the rebuilding efforts. Budgetary restrictions placed on the project, dubbed Arnold's Gym by some, have been repeatedly overruled by Governor Schwazenegger.
"We're not going to do anything only halfway." the Governor said, in defense of his policy. "This project is very important."
Residents who were affected by the fires have been consequently allotted smaller measures of assistance from the state government as monies previously earmarked for their relief have been channeled to the already overbudget Community Center. Said one angry resident, "He's crazy and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Thank God for insurance."
When asked about a completion date for the project and the long anticipated dispersal of relief funds to those displaced by the blaze, the Governor responded, "No one seems to understand what we are trying to do there and it's so important. People have had a difficult time and they are impatient now, but when it is all done they will be so happy. Building a gym this big is very hard but I think we are doing fine."
