What do you guys think?
-
not a fucking chance!
-
Who fucking knows. He stomped the shit out of Crocop. No matter what I hope someone gets knocked out.
-
just because randy knew exactly how to beat tim and had the perfect style for executing it doesn't mean he is the same fighter he was in his prime
gonzaga wins easily

On paper, Napao will win a decisive TKO victory in the third or fourth. This is Captain America. He should have lost on paper to Chuck (the first time), Tito, Maurice Smith, Vitor (first), heck even Tim Sylvia.
-
Gonzaga has a good chance of beating Couture. Couture traditionally hasn't done well against larger wrestlers, Barnett is an example of that. Sylvia while large was a bit different because he wasn't known for his ground game and has very little strength there. Sylvia relied on his reach advantage(it certainly wasn't blinding speed) I hope Couture can defend the belt a couple of times and then retire.

Both Ricco and Josh killed Randy on the ground. Randy hasn't fought much off his back except those two fights. Gonzaga is good at striking, and great on the ground. Randy's forte is the middle range in the clinch. I don't know if Randy can get top position, if he can maintain that and avoid the subs, he can grind out a win. Otherwise I see Napao getting the top, and mashing Randy until the ref steps in. Napao should be favored.

I agree. If a larger grappler gets randy on the ground he is going to have a much harder time if not an impossible time getting back up.

I don't think Randy has knockout power so eventually he's gonna end up on his back. This is not a good matchup for Capt. America. Crocop fit his style more, Napao will be the new heavyweight champ.

Styles makes fights, and Randy doesn't match up stylistically well against Napao. Big Nog does, Vera does, (although he isn't scheduled to fight anytime soon), Fedor does. But Randy is Randy, and he has pulled off some miracles in the past. We will see.

Gonzaga (240lbs) isn't quite as big as Ricco(255) or Barnett (250lbs) when they fought Randy, and Randy's bjj has improved by leaps and bounds since then (as you could see when had that grappling match with Jacare, granted Jacare only weighs about 185-190lbs, he's still a bad mofo). It's a tough call, but, I can see Randy coming into this fight with his head on straight, and a good gameplan, he may have to weather an early storm but I think he can pull it off. Although I do agree, it's a bad match up for Randy.
-
I'm calling Gonzaga. 2nd round by submission.

I'm hoping you are right, but Napao has fought in ADCC, is a BJJ black belt of high caliber, showed good GNP against Mirko. His striking is effective as well, and I think he will be more explosive than Randy. Randy is the king of the clinch, and I am hoping he can keep the fight there, or get top position without getting subbed. Jacare, as great as he is gives up 60 lbs to Napao.
-
I think Gonzaga's arsenal in addition to his size and youth will be too much for Randy, but, as other have said, Randy is not a guy I'd feel confident betting against.
-
i think its a toss up...What Gonzago did to CroCop has to have Randy taking this fight very seriously...
I'll go with Gonzago winning by TKO in the 2nd round..

Gonzaga's boxing looked good, much better than when he debuted against Jordan. His ground and pound looked seemless, it was the reason he caught Mirko looking with the right leg high kick.
-
Gonzaga should win this one...Randy has never done well with guys that can wrestle and grapple.
But Randys looks strong with that Growth he's running...so he might shock us again.

People can argue that Randy did well with Jacare in the PSL, but he had 30 lbs on Jacare, and wasn't on his back. Against Napao, he may well be on his back, a place he didn't fare well with against Ricco and Josh. I hope Randy wins, but I wouldn't bet on him or against him.

Couture's a workhorse and gas's Gonzaga out sometime late in the 2nd.
-
i think randy will try to box napao and keep him going backwards maybe some low kicks here and there and if a clinch happens i think he'll go for some dirty boxing and maybe a takedown and some ground and pound and if he feels napao coming back he'll back off and box again..
now for napao i think he'll come in with alot of confidence and looking to throw bombs with hands or feet and he'll probaly get a takedown if that happens randy will have to go for a quick submission or defensive strikes because if napao starts dropping hammers randy will get worn down and then opens the chance for a submission. but i think randy will try to wear down napao but liek people have said napao is a worldclass jiu-jitsu expert and he can throw knockout strikes and randy can box but he isn't throwing the anvils that napao has.
i love the way capt. america has shocked the world.
my pick is napao by either submission or tko
but capt. america could shock the world again. if that happens ufs needs to get the Cyborg Fedor
since Fedor is the King of MMA and square randy against Fedor... that would be a money maker
-
Randy is one of my favorite fighters, but i think he might get hurt bad here.
-
Randy will work his ass off to grind out a decision victory, but i think gonzaga will take this if he doesn't gas.
I'd love to see Randy drop a class and fight page.
But this will probably be a career-ender. GH is expensive these days :)

have to agree with this.....i see randy having some sort of master game plan for this one.

one month later (thursday before the fight)
after further review I've changed my mind,I see Gonzaga submitting couture,I just watched Couture/Silvia again and realized Silvia fought like a 280lb pile of shit that night

LOL, when HASN'T Silvia fought like a 280lb. pile of shit !?!
-
randy will win by disqualification
-
Randy by 4th round TKO.
-
I like Randy in the fight, he usually has a good game plan, it will be just executing it, honestly, I hope just a good fight, the past few ppvs have not been that good,
-
Randy by 4th round TKO.
I hope so.

gonzaga 255
isn't that above gonzaga's normal weight? wonder if he took it easy . . .

nobody has brought up the experience factor, high profile, championship fights.
how many has gonzaga had? vs how many has Randy had? does this make Randy more comfortable in this situation or does it not matter?

that's a good point actually and ya got to also take into consideration they also go an extra 10 minutes (this fight is 5 rounds) and randy's been in those deep waters while gonzaga has'nt (to my knowledge) but then again the equalizer there is randy's 43 now.......
still going with gonzaga to submit him though

yeah he is 43 but whatever he is doing, he's doing right, even in the Silvia fight he was able to pick up a 280lb Silvia and get the top, so you never know it only takes one shot, ask gonzaga. ;)

Randy having Napao pressed up against the cage is advantageous for Capt America. Randy using guard with a 255 Gorillo on top is bad.

HEATH HERRING:
“I think Randy always comes in with a good game plan, and I think Gonzaga, even though he got that incredible knockout with Mirko (CroCop), I’m thinking Randy’s got the game plan to get him. I’ve got to go with Randy on this one.”
JOE STEVENSON:
“Well, Randy of course, probably 3rd round TKO. Why? Because I’m biased, it’s Randy Couture for Christ’s sake and second of all I think he’s going to have it for him. I think he’s going to be able to wear him down and out-cardio him.”
KENNY FLORIAN:
“Randy has an ability to take people out of their game, exploit their weakness, and make them look bad. Myself, I think Randy’s going to have the edge here.
Here’s a guy who went and competed in submission wrestling competition with Jacare, arguably the best pound for pound grappler in the world, and went to a draw. So we know his submission skills and ability to stay out of submissions is greatly improved since the past.
I’ve seen what Randy can do to big guys. I saw what he did to a giant in Tim Sylvia. I think that the size differential and the ability to go five rounds, he’s proven that over and over and this is a tremendous fight again.
We’re going to see what Gonzaga can do. I’m curious to see what he can do off his back and maybe see if he can get Randy on his back, I think that’s going to be huge. I think this fight could come down to wrestling as well.”
BROCK LESNAR:
"I think Randy wins that fight. I hope Randy wins that fight and then I can fight him in December. I'd like to fight Randy. I'll fight Gonzaga. We'll see what happens."
DAMON MARTIN (HOST – MMAWEEKLY RADIO):
“Randy Couture is a legend in the sport and it is getting harder, basically next to impossible to pick against this guy. He has to be the most well liked person in this industry and everyone is a fan of the guy. That said, I think that Randy is going to run into many of the same problems he ran into back when he fought guys like Josh Barnett and Ricco Rodriguez. Big strong wrestlers, who can grapple and overpower him at certain points in the fight.
Gabriel Gonzaga is going to come into this fight probably 15 to 20 pounds heavier than Randy and is world class on the ground. On the other hand, Randy has a phenomenal clinch game and dirty boxing that we really haven’t seen Gonzaga deal with yet in his UFC career. I think at the end of the night, we’re going to see a new UFC heavyweight champion crowned with Gabriel Gonzaga pulling out a TKO in the 3rd round.”
JEFF CAIN (CO-HOST – MMAWEEKLY RADIO):
"It's an extremely hard bout to pick a winner in. Gabriel Gonzaga has youth and size on his side, but Randy Couture is Randy Couture. I think this fight comes down to who comes in with the better game plan and who is able to implement that plan first.
Randy is one of, if not the best at formulating a game plan to defeat an adversary. With that said, I think Gonzaga is a very difficult stylistic match up for Couture and will come away with the win and the belt by hurting Randy standing and neutralizing him on the ground with submission attempts. And the new UFC Heavyweight Champion of the World, Gabriel Gonzaga."
KEN PISHNA (EDITOR – MMAWEEKLY.COM)
“On paper, Gonzaga looks to have the advantage in most areas. He’s a better submission fighter; he’s bigger, stronger; he’s knocked guys like Mirko out.
But there are a few elements that favor Couture as well. He is a master at game planning. His wrestling is second-to-none, especially when you apply it to the MMA game. And despite his age, Couture has the experience and the gas tank to go for days.
If Gonzaga can catch Couture early on in the bout with a heavy punch or kick, he has a good chance at winning. But I see Couture using his speed and athleticism to his advantage, avoiding Gonzaga early in the fight and attempting to wear him down over the course of the first 3 to 4 rounds. At that point, I think Couture may have a shot at finishing Gonzaga – who has never been into the ‘Championship Rounds’ – otherwise look for the decision nod in Couture’s favor.”

hoping randy wins but I think gonzaga will pull it off

I'm betting on Randy. I will bet my house and car

I always want Randy to win. He is one of my favorite fighters. He gameplans the best, and always has strategies to counteract his oppositions strengths.
I will be the first to admit that on paper, fighting a younger fighter who is 30 lbs heavier, a Mundial champion, with heavy hands and good kickboxing didn't look to be good for Captain America. Randy shrugged off a couple of kicks, and recovered nicely from a three punch combo that would have had most folks on queer street. And after that takedown, hearing the crunch of Napao's nose, he wisely jumped all over that and finished the fight in spectacular fashion. I will never bet against him.
