Title: Why are so many baseball players obese?
Post by: Camel Jockey on July 29, 2007, 12:45:37 PM
Why? They are probably the worst conditioned athletes in the 4 major sports..

Pussy injuries by running to first base. Don't these guys workout, eat right and do cardio in the off season? A lot of them are in horrible shape.

Many nfl linemen are overweight, but well conditioned. They can actually move.  :-\

A-Rod is destroying the record books.. Probably nothing to do with roids, but more so with him staying in shape and working hard.

The only thing I agree with is that pitchers and catchers should be trained and conditioned the same as all positions!

Don't you agree that baseball players are the least athletic of all the four major sports?

It's true, many are out of shape fat fucks.

The NFL players are probably the hardest working.

You're on crack, they wouldn't be playing everyday if they were "obese". There are a few pitchers who I might consider obese though!

I'd say overall, basketball players are the most athletic. If you are just looking at skill position players, football is up there too along with soccer.

Good job of ignoring the question at hand.  ::)

What I said is true.. Baseball is a skill sport where conditioning isn't that important.

They are skilled no doubt.

Hitting a softball is hard enough.. but a baseball at 90mph+

Cricket bowlers have been clocked at 108 mph though, but cricketers use a wider bat.

Last year I had the opportunity to meet Bartolo Colon and I really felt sorry for him, I swear he must have been about 260 and all I could think is that this guy is going to be in a world of trouble this year, and sure as shit, he's turned out to aweful, I seriously blame his weight for his crapping pitching!

It really is funny to watch baseball players just make into the MLB being in pretty good shape and then within the first 5 years most of them turn into total fatass's...One of the only sports were the athletes actually get in worse shape as they progress in their career...lol

Since Mexicans are horrible athletes, yet so many of them can play baseball, how can you really consider it a sport? ;)

They are slobs in general, because:

-The "sport" requires athleticism only in very short bursts, and demands no endurance whatsoever.

-Most of these guys are "athletes" only on the margin, good basically at playing baseball and not much else.

-Once you're established in MLB, it's a lot less competitive than other sports. A nice easy lifestyle.

Less competitive?? World Series, playoffs, wildcards??????????

A nice easy lifestyle? Ok, the moneys great, but your contract depends on how a player performs, it's called incentive, no ones job is secure......example: after 6 years as a catcher with the angels, Jose Molina was traded to the Yankees after a game last week withing 20 mins after the game ended, he was on a plane the next day backing up Jorge Posada in the following game......now, not knowing where you might end up at the next day is not what I call "a nice easy lifestyle" I call it stress, because if you can't perform......you're gone!!

NCAA and minor league is filled with steroid users. When they make it to mlb level, the testing is out of controll so the user has to slow down or stop. Then you get fattys, nevertheless still remarkable athletes.

everyone that ive ever met that hasnt liked baseball is because they sucked at it as a kid.. basketball -you can pass the ball away.. baseball -when you step up to the plate theres nowhere to go.

no endurance? they play 162 games a year.. they'll play a game in ny starting at 7pm,, then be in california 10 hours later for a day game.

turn on the game on espn,, tell how many guys are out of shape -let alone obese.

take your best baseball player, your best basketball player, and your best football player.. could a-rod catch a football and run with it -yes.. could a-rod make a free throw shot -yes.. could anyone from any other sport make a diving catch on a 120mph hit down the 3rd base line? no.. could anyone from anyother sport walk up to the plate and hit a 95 mph mariano rivera cutter? no. could anyone from any other sport strike out a-rod? no

Because baseball is not more of a sport than throwing dart is. Most of the time you just stand around and wait..and wait....and then for 10 seconds you might actually be doing something, like swinging a bat or throwing a ball.

Comparing apples to oranges in terms of skill set.

I was comparing athletic ability and conditioning, areas where baseball players fall short.

Can't tell me any baseball player can even come close to an athlete like Julius Peppers. Guy is 6'5" 280 and runs like a cat..

David Ortiz, the AL mvp is a fatass.  ::)

A-Rod maybe be an exception because I hear he's a hard worker in the offseason.

im sure a rod can at least throw a football half way decent.. but a quarterback trying to hit a major league fastball -they wouldnt even touch the ball
