Title: Do not talk to me about what I'm eating!
Post by: Croatch on August 13, 2007, 02:33:02 PM
Is it me, or do people who lift get this all the time:
"Hey, what's that you're eating...looks good."
"Gotta get that protein."
"Are you eating...again?"
to friend..."This guy eats all the time."

A few years of these comments...now it's getting to be a bit much.  Every time I'm somewhere new for any period of time, people see me eat pretty often and they can't help but to let me know they notice.  I need a shirt that says, "Yes, I eat a lot.  Don't look at my food, ask me what I'm eating, or talk to me about lifting."

Any good stories on this?

I assume everyone here can relate.

Eat a healthy, BBing diet and people will complain and comment.
Eat shit and no one will notice.

funny how that works.

At classes I'll eat chicken and vegetables while others eat pizza and candy, yet I get the stares.

I understand why. But it's not rational.

Ask them if you eat so much then why is their Bodyfat so much higher than yours.

Haha. I have a similar one. In my workplace I usually get a measuring jug and put a pint of milk in it and mix in some protein powder and slurp away at it at my desk. When people see me stirring up my drink they say "Is that your energy drink?" and I say "no, it's protein".

Five years later the same people are asking the same question "do you drink that for energy?" and I say "no, fuck off, it's protein".

What don't people understand about the word "protein" and that it's not a source of energy?

no you are irrational, and have been suckered by Supplement company propaganda.  BBing diets are not healthy, you would be healthier and live longer eating less even if it was Pizza and candy.

That depends on the definition.

My diet now is LOTS of lean meat (chicken, tuna)
TONS of fibrous veggies of all sorts (tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, etc)
skimmed milk
parboiled brown rice
Healthy fats from olive oil, fish, fish oil capsules, walnuts, etc
some eggs
1-2 multivitamin and mineral pills daily
zinc

I don't drink alcohol anymore and never eat fast foods and steer away from junk whenever I can and very rarely touch candy.

This diet is as healthy as can be.

and it IS a bodybuilding diet, albeit a very tough one if one's metabolism is really high.

Also, the whole "eat less - live longer" may be interesting from an academic, scientific point of view - not for us.

You're still gonna die from cancer (1/3), cardiovascular diseases (1/3) and all the other crap.

And it's not proven on humans yet.'

Croatch, I have lots of small stories, hold on 5 minutes.

No it is not healthy, it is likely way too many calories to promote longevity or to allow you to avoid the ravages of aging.  Caloric restriction is optimal.

Croatch, I have lots of small stories, hold on 5 minutes.

There is more scientific data suggesting the health benefits of caloric restriction than supporting any other dietary protocol.  If this doesn't interest you and you would rather stake your health on ad copy from bodybuilding magazines, well more power to you.

I'm seriously considering inventing some lie about my blood sugar, dictating a strict diet if I am training.

Because all the crap I've had to hear from family, strangers and to a lesser degree, friends, gets tiresome very quickly.

Prime example: I was visiting my dad's, and my brother was there. This was when I had just begun training. I was preparing some supper, cooking lots of pasta and preparing some minced beef. Also drinking half a gallon of milk during the day.

He kept commenting. "Why are you eating all that, it's wrong. It's a waste. Don't eat so much. Drink water instead.". He went on like a broken record for a few minutes, repeating the same content yet in many different ways.

Ironically, my brother has started training as well, and just recently I visited him and we stood in the kitchen where he, after a workout, was drinking milk, cooking pasta and preparing vast quantities chicken.

The irony. I of course pointed this out to him with some laughter. "see how full of bullshit you were"

Not long ago, during vacationing to Greece, I was eating tuna and carrots etc (dieting), and my sister commented on my eating habbits for the manieth time. I finally burst out how full of shit she was and how she was appearently just trying to sabotage my efforts.

Listen, I don't personally doubt that this may be true - caloric restriction for longevity.

But what about the PRACTICAL APPLICATION of this approach?
You are STILL going to die from all the other stuff everyone else is.

Your definition of "healthy" is slightly absurd.

A diet as the above is optimal for avoiding cardiovascular diease, as it is very low in sat. fats for one, and full of healthy fats.
Also, primary carb source fibrous veggies - combats cancer since it's loaded with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients.
Also, stabile blood sugar.

Not to mention the possible side effects of the caloric restriction on bone strength as you age. 1/3 of women develop osteoporosis already as is. Scientists have also argued that such a widespread caloric restriction could worsen that figure.

Even so, your definiton of healthy is pretty subjective.

Healthy is also more than living to be 80 years instead of 77.

your philosophy seems to be "eat well, stay fit, die anyway"....

1- cooking food above 118 degrees pretty much kills any nutritional value there was anyway
2- eating that much protein for years and years is killing your kidneys
3- people are going to die anyway "from something", but the years they do live can be better..
(healthy person lives to be 75, or an AIDS patient lives to be 75)

your father was simply just saying from common sense "drinking a fucking gallon of milk" is retarded

there's nothing sensational about my claims.  They are supported by research.  When I said do some research it wasn't rhetoric.  I really mean take the time to read the literature or at least popular journalism covering these subjects.  We're talking about your life here, do you really want to trust it to Bodybuilding supplement companies whose only interest is in selling you product?

I might end up dying eventually but while I'm alive I will have a higher quality of life and be able to remain active and alert to a very old age while you and other big eaters will be crippled by disease.

Also you should realize that living an extra 20 years could mean the difference between indefinite life extension enabled by advancing technology and missing the boat so to speak.

As far as longevity goes, what's the point of living past say.. 85, you're senile, frail, half your organs don't work properly, can't do anything on your own, most likely need help going to the bathroom, if you slip and fall you'll break half your bones... I wouldn't want to live that long, there's a certain age at which the cons outweighs the pro's.

at 85 Jasper Benicasa can do 1 arm pull ups for 5 reps an arm.  At 91 Jack Lalanne can do a lot of strength moves that you probably can't do now.

Eating less means living BETTER for longer, not just longer

True. Total calories is the biggest factor. To live long you need a low metabolism, which can be achieved by limited sleep, sedentary lifestyle and very little food consumption, hypothyroidism is the life extenders best friend as well, just forget working out. However, even on higher calories this can be offset somewhat by keeping a insulin levels even/low and never let insulin spike, the right vitamins/minerals and a healthy overall lifestyle might also help, but probably not.

I'm at around 4000-5000 calories a day myself to maintain my workouts and BF levels, ( think I worry about life extension? ).

who realy cares about what this is type of diet is doing to long term health. lets not lie here we are not in this for health, if we where we would be doing mass amounts of cardio and look like swimmers. everyone on here is on here cause they like to be more muscular then everyone else and that comes at a price.

As far as stories i have a lunch that is as simple as i can make, two cans of tuna and some brown rice  throw in a couple oatmeal bars and protien shakes for my coffee breaks and ta da, now having been doing this for every day of work for the last two and half years,  the comments have finally been givin up by the pepole that dont get it. and those that do get it or even if they dont get it but respect it is all you have to talk to in life

if you don't care about your health, start a cycle, that will actually make you more muscular.  On the other hand just eating massive amounts will make you fat.  How much muscle do you think you can make in a day, do you really think an unenhanced individual can turn 4500 cals a day into anything but excess blubber?

LOL, wtf are you talking about, I'm 256lbs. with single digit bf... what are you 220 @ 40% bf !??!
and before you start yapping about pics, I've posted mine several times on here, do a search.

256 at single digit bf? the pics you've posted you look no bigger than 220, you must be very tall because in that back shot you posted you dont look 250 plus and you look nowhere near single digit bf.

no you are irrational, and have been suckered by Supplement company propaganda.  BBing diets are not healthy, you would be healthier and live longer eating less even if it was Pizza and candy.

Eating a clean and calorie restricted diet is not healthy?

I eat around 2,000 calories a day.. I try to eat clean but figure in some junk food here and there. Always make sure to get fiber, protein, multi-vitamins.. In the best shape of my life and feel fantastic.

When I was eating like a normal americans 7 years back I felt like shit.

to be honest I don't think that eat clean really matters

apart from the post work out shake everything is fair game, within moderation

I gave up protein shake last summer..haven't noticed the difference.

yes that is very healthy,  I don't know if I was responding to you up top, but if I was then I'm sorry I must have assumed that you were consuming standard BBing portions of the foods you mentioned (which ends up being closer to 4000 or 4500 cals per day).

I assume everyone here can relate.

Eat a healthy, BBing diet and people will complain and comment.
Eat shit and no one will notice.

funny how that works.

At classes I'll eat chicken and vegetables while others eat pizza and candy, yet I get the stares.

I understand why. But it's not rational.

no shit!! used to drive me nuts but now i just laugh....

about 15 minutes ago a guy came in our office and said "2 o'clock, homeade ice cream and brownies in the conference room".....everyone got excited....now at 2 i will be the only one not eating it and i will have to answer to everyone that is fat and shoveling it in their heads, "you don't want any? your weird?"

I hear ya. I get that all the time at work and it bothers the shit out of me.

Shifted Shapes, everyone will die eventually.  Why do you insist that you want to live to be 90 years old.  You pointed out two people that were still in decent shape at that age.  That is such a tiny part of the population.  Your logic is totally faulty, its the same logic some people use to justify smoking cigarettes.  They had an uncle who lived to be 106 and smoked 3 packs a day since he was 4 years old.  Just because they did it, doesn't mean you can.  Plus every person over 80 that I've ever met hates themselves.  They tell the same stories over and over.  They shit themselves a lot, that just doesn't sound too fun...

usually on Fridays someone brings in a couple boxes of dunkin' donuts.  No one has just one..usally they take 2 at a time and keep coming back until the boxes are empty. Keep in mind that 1 dunkin donut is 300 calories, 3 of those are nearly 1,000 calories..and we haven't hit lunch yet.

shortly there after it's lunch time..which means they will order a couple Pizza pies. No on has just 1 slice, usually it is 2+
throw in a mid afternoon snack and full dinner

we are talking 3,000+ calories

and these are people that think walking 5 blocks is too much exertion

yet, I am viewed as the weird one for not partaking in the binge eating with them

I just use a calorie amount as a rule of thumb..

Like I will eat icecream at Baskin Robins and I'll just figure the estimated amount into my daily amount. I binge somtimes on alcohol or junk food here and there, but since I'm usually under a calorie amount for the week, I don't gain weight, but I do lose it. It's a slow way to lose but I haven't lost any muscle, just some strength. Being leaner feels great.

People are weird.. They dislike the idea of eating healthy and brush it off because they don't have discipline to do it. They have messed up views on healthy eating and think eating right simply means switching to wheat bread from white bread..  ::) And switching from soda to juice. They also put so much into stupid fad diets, like that low cab nonsense..

What don't people understand about the word "protein" and that it's not a source of energy?

your fault for telling them it's protein. if you just said energy or water they'd shut up.

Yes you have found the path of least resistance to be fantistically fit, healthy, AND relatively satisfied with what you eat.  I'm just trying to help people see the light, you obviously already know what is up.

You also point out a common misconception amongst fat overeaters.  They think that the way to be healthier is just to consume mass quantities of healthy food.  Like "I don't know why I'm not losing weight I've been eating a large Veggie lovers pizza, a big bowl of ceasar salad and lots of peanuts every night but I still cant lose this weight."

Really the problem is that most people will try lots of different diets but whatever they will try they always overeat because they are not addicted to certain foods, they are addicted to being full and sedated and they can't stand to ever be hungry.  They don't love food, they are just frieghtened of ever feeling hungry.

I always feel like people don't know what to think when they see someone so regimented in their diet.  It's no big deal to some people, like myself.  It's just your regular routine.
When you look a certain way, I think people think of how lazy they are, then feel the need to talk to you about diet/working out...it's strange.  That is the best thing about lifting though, it's right in peoples faces.  Unlike being a great musician or brilliant person, nobody knows unless you say something...haha  Fun stuff. ;)

they have stopped asking me if i want now though. and they get all pissy at me for not eating the same crap they do and keep trying to get me into their bad eating habits..

funny thing happened the other day. i was eating tunasallad. and they asked me if i wanted a cake for dessert. i just said no thanks ofc..

they asked why. i got tired of their crap and just said... i dont want to get fat. now keep in mind everyone of them are obese exept one guy cause he plays alot of sports. the whole room got quiet for like 1 minute after that.  ;D fat people have feeling to  :P
