Anyone watching Vick's mea culpa today saw a wealthy and privileged black man use the word "axe" in place of the word "ask".
What gives with even high profile and monied black people absolutely butchering the English language. You'd think sounding like a moron would be something they'd want to avoid.
-
I didn't know they had closed captioning so that you could know that he really said Axe. I heard "Ask". I bet you you mispronounce the word, "Washington" as in Washington, DC...or Rowe (in Annapolis it is pronounced as "Ro-we" not "Row")

Are you kidding?
I'm actually listening to his press conference on the radio right now and he says "axe" clearly and unmistakeably. If you want to defend him great but don't lie about what was clearly said.

I'm fittin to listen to it again to see if really said axe. If he didn't I'll give him credick for saying ask. ;D

You've never heard West Texans say the word "lubricity". I always get the giggles when they call it "lubriticity"

I was always told to eat my vegi-tables, especially the ones found in the Fridgidare...

Good Lord, actual proof that some black people absolutely butcher the English language. That is shocking, just shocking.
Since it's actual proof though I'm not sure it's going to be believed by certain people on this board.
In fact it must be a slow news month since that was actually reported, either that or it's the "Liberal Media's" fault.
Nothing like laughing at a delusional neotaint to make a good day even better.

Perhaps you can find me the definition for the word "axe" and tell me how it applied to what Vick said.
I'm not referring to the difference in pronunciation between the way the U.S. says tomato, potato or basil and the way Britain says them. I'm talking about basic words with one pronunciation.
And if you didn't know there was a proper way to speak English then perhaps you shouldn't send your children to the school system you attended.

1. I understand what he means when he says "axe," and I'm sure people all over the country do too. and I'm sure they understand people who speak w N. England accents . . . or Southern ones for that matter. Words like "car," or "fire," for instance.
2. Let me guess . . . from your half-assed liberalism and apparent unawareness of recent scholarship on "dialects," you went to some mid-level state school. You don't have to tell me where you went . . . but there is a perceptible difference b/w the way you express yourself, and the way someone like goatboy does. you leave way too much ass hanging out there. So, don't get too uppity about "axe" . . . there are things that mark everybody . . . you might have had a more privileged upbringing than Vick, but there are plenty of others who would find your quirks just as quaint.
-
Loco those would be facts, which really don't matter much (to some). :)
The exact reason why people hate Gordon...he enunciates. Lol
Seriously though, southern drawl and ebonics are not in the same category to me. I find it easy to understand hicks (and I am not from the South) and ebonics throws me off sometimes and I have to sit and process the words.
The "axe" part is found outside of the black community but I don't think we have seen something so horrendous as the school systems in Oakland, CA where they actually teach and use ebonics in the schools so kids can actually pass English classes and write papers. Can anyone explain that? I highly doubt the Asians who misuse the letters "L" and "R" are allowed to misspell the words in class.
Accents are one thing. Hell, I date a Jersey girl (South Jersey :P) and am friends with many East Coasters and I understand them fine despite accents but ebonics and slang make people look down right dumb.

Excellent post.
1. The question was never understanding what Vick said the question was his pronunciation of certain words. You get the difference, right? Your point about regional accents is good to a certain degree. I agree that certain portions of the country butcher the English language to varying degrees but we're not talking about regional dialects, where talking about a particular race within the U.S. and not a race that grew up speaking a different language such as Chinese. A race that grew up speaking English.
Many blacks up here in Boston speak in the same way Vick does. That transcends regional differences.
2. Let me guess, because you've read a few of my posts bashing certain Conservatives you think I'm a Liberal? Of course the accuracy of this assessment is not really what you're concerned with is it? Providence College isn't a state school but I suppose it could be considered mid-level and that was probably your greater point. Nice job bringing Goatboy into a discussion where he himself never posted and thanks for the tip on my leaving "too much ass hanging out there".
I grew up middle class and exactly what does that have to do with Vick's use of the term "axe"? As I'm sure you know privilege and education are not coupled, anyone can become educated in any surroundings in this country. The ability to speak in a proper manner is not directly related to social status. Everyone has the means to learn to speak, money is not the deciding factor.

I don't get hung up on dialects, accents, etc. Maybe it's because pidgin is so prevalent here and because we have so many immigrants. There really isn't a logical distinction between pidgin and Ebonics in IMO, but you can get away with one, but not the other. Everyone who wants to work as a professional here has to speak proper English, but speaking pidgin is almost an art form that in many instances shows you are actually a part of the island culture.

I've got to go, so I'll be brief . . . if you (assuming you are a middle class new englander), Vick, and some fifth generation Harvard grad walked into a northeastern "merchant bank" tomorrow looking for a job . . . w no resumes . . . you'd be about as likely to get the job as vick, even if you weren't allowed to say anything about how you were raised . . . in your own backyard, no less. I know this is a rather arbitrary example, but if you're reasonable, you will probably agree.
every class/tribe/whatever you want to call it has its markers, and seeks to perpetuate the success of its own, regardless of merits/abilities.
You're doing it right now, and there are situations in which it will be/has been done to you. If you think that's fine, then I have no argmt w you.
if you want to condemn vick for killing dogs or failing as a football player, fine, but to do so b/c of something as superficial as his "butchery" of the language makes no sense.

I am not really familiar with "pidgin" but I can get the gist of what you are talking about. Ebonics, from what a few education students have told me, is actually considered a separate language all itself. To me, using this "different language" and not standard English in schools is appalling. All it does it make the black community look stupid and set their kids up for failure in any further education. Vick, being a former college student like many other athletes, should have at least taken an ENG 101 and 102 course and should know how to speak correctly. In the end, the speaker looks like an idiot. A Bostonian telling me to "pahk the cah" is different than Michael Vick telling me to "park my fly ass whip".

Your way wrong about that. Semantics, and vernacular language have everything to do with life as we know it. Don't know about it step inside a motivational theory lab, and you will understand how those that "butcher" the English language such as Ebonics, and set their own accords are shown through empirical evidence to irrational motive and intrinsic foley, this is simple when looking back to Voltaire's writings as he practiced the idiographic approach in comparing races, and science is now looking at the structure of classes/race/gender and finding that while we are 99.9% alike the .01 makes up for so much difference the use of nomothetic approaches to understanding how we evolve is useful and shows how we will also DEVOLVE, due to this idiocracy!!
Oh and ANY school in the Boston NE area is a good school, great school you are at the hub of the world.

This is one of the most tragically ironic posts I've ever read. I'm not just referring to the multiple grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, but the fact that you are literally making up words at the end. Idiocracy is the name of that George Bush parody movie.
This is a pretty informal setting and mistakes are inevitable (I make my fair share of gaffes), but in trying to sound smart you posted something that was indecipherable. Considering the point of the post was to criticize the language skills of others and to link those poor language skills to poor moral character, all I can say is ::)

Every school should teach kids proper English. We've actually had a debate here about whether it is appropriate to condone or even teach pidgin in the public schools. I do a lot of volunteer work in elementary schools (going this evening in fact to read to second graders) and there are stark differences in the language among our kids here. Pidgin is much more prevalent in more remote and poorer sections of the island.
I also do a lot of interviews and I'll tell you speech is really important. I would not hire anyone who cannot speak proper English, unless their language problems were related to a disability.
That said, the whole point of this thread is silly. Criticizing an educated person who mispronounces a word tells me someone probably has race issues.
-

That luke wilson movie was a parody of bush's presidency.
No, I'm not talking about the words you used, I'm talking about the way you used them. That post is indicative of poor communication skills; run on sentences galore, incomplete ideas, leaving words out, basic misspelling, etc. That's not something I would harp on ordinarily, but considering the point you're attempting to make, blah blah blah.
I just googled idiocracy and looked it up on webster's website. Nada.

If it's a word, then it's a word, but I've never heard of it.

Ebonics is not a real thing. It was conceived as a scheme by some California school board to receive extra funding for underfunded schools. They claimed that the way blacks talked was a separate language and deserved more language funding. The argument was rejected and no American schools teach, or even acknowledge, "Ebonics".

There's a fine line between small grammtical errors and full on ghetto talk. If you've passed high school with some college as Vick did, then you should be able to speak in a decent manner.
I love how you dodge so many issues by either resorting to personal attacks or shifting the issue at hand. youandme's grammer is not in question here, and even if it were, it certainly would have passed for decent english by most educated people. Vick's case is different.

Those weren't small grammatical errors. They were significant errors that made the post difficult to comprehend. Even for a casual shoot-the-shit forum, that post was extraordinarily incoherent. I didn't shift the issue. Youandme attempted to equate poor communication skills with intrinsic moral failings (a ridiculous point, in and of itself), and I pointed out his poor communication skills. That's not a personal attack.
If you can consider youandme's ramblings decent English, then Vick's use of "axe" in place of "ask" is really no big deal.
-

I will be going to the local DMV to get my driver's license updated once I hit 21. From past experiences, I know the people that work there speak in ebonics slang and not exactly in a plesant manner either (what else what you expect from a bunch of affirmative action hires?).
Do you think it's okay to speak the way certain ghetto, wannabe gangsters speak? NOW, I'm not asking whether you understand the garbage, but whether you think it's acceptable.
This issue is similar to formalities.. Some can function by being rude, but is it acceptable for any working man, whether blue or white collar, to act like a savage?

the problem is not how they speak . . . you use slang/expressions on a regular basis that wouldn't have passed muster 50 years ago. languages are constantly evolving . . .
ebonics=/=rudeness
rudeness can speak any language . . .

I've always wondered why DMV's across the United States almost always have similar bottom of the barrel staff.

It's funny you shoud use the DMV as an example. I just had my license renewed in June at the office on 34th street in Herald Square.
As soon as you get off of the elevator, you have to stop at a desk before you can even sit down to get the forms you need to fill out. The guy behind the desk is this balding, white guy who at the time had a giant band aid on his forehead. He was one of the rudest people I've ever met. Literally, people (the majority of whom were white) were going "What the hell is wrong with him?" when he gave instructions on what to do with the form.
Now, the woman who took my photo happened to be black. She was overweight and I'm sure you would consider her ghetto. She was the cliched sassy, next-door neighbor right out of a sitcom. I could hear her interaction with the (white) girl ahead of me. The area is partitioned, so I couldn't see what she was doing, but the black lady told her to relax like 6 times. Then she goes "Honey, we're only allowed to take two pictures. If this next one doesn't come out right, I'm gonna have to use it." The white girl said something then the black lady said "Well, believe it or not we actually do want you to look good in the photos," and they both started laughing.
In regards to race, my experience at the DMV was the complete opposite of what you claim is typical.
Do you think it's okay to speak the way certain ghetto, wannabe gangsters speak? NOW, I'm not asking whether you understand the garbage, but whether you think it's acceptable.
So, someone "talks ghetto"? Big deal. Vick doesn't say "ask" properly. The president doesn't say "nuclear" properly. He says "nucular". His background and current professional status are more elite than Vick's. Why is that more acceptable?
Is this acceptable?:

Here's something that was coincidentally in the paper today:
http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/r_m/index.html
Coit Blacker, a Stanford professor who is one of the secretary of state's closest friends, recalls going into a shop where Rice asked to see earrings. The clerk showed her costume jewelry. Rice asked to see something nicer, prompting the clerk to whisper some sass under her breath.
Blacker remembers Rice tearing the woman to shreds.
"Let's get one thing straight," he recalls her saying. "You are behind the counter because you have to work for minimum wage. I'm on this side asking to see the good jewelry because I make considerably more."
Using the context clues, it's obvious that the clerk was something other than black. Condoleeza is not known for "playing the race card."Ignore the fact that this may have been a racist incident, just take it at face value: an example of a rude, white worker. The shop sounds like it may have been high-end, so we can safely assume the worker was not "ghetto."
I could go on and on about bad experiences I've had with white salespeople. I won't because that would be apropos of nothing.
Rudeness knows no race, creed or color, but perception does all too often.

Not a fan of Rice by any stretch of the imagination, ...but I have heard about situations where she has ripped a strip or two off people and verbally raked them over hot coals for various transgressions committed against her, ...and I have to admit she was very effective and very appropriate to pwn them the way she did. I also heard that when she was at Stanford, she had one professor who made the mistake of trying to humiliate her. She stood her ground and pwned him so bad, I wouldn't be surprised if his little wee wee curled up so far into him it took 4 months and a crochet hook to come back out. :-X (http://www.jaguarenterprises.net/images/thumbup.gif) (http://www.jaguarenterprises.net/images/thumbup.gif)

Al-Doggity, I guess you do have a point. People working for the DMV, whether black or white, are rude. But that's sort of missing the point, which was rudeness and ebonics. Now I'll tell you from personal experience that I've met many ebonic speaking black folks who were kind, but the majority are very rude, confrontational for no good reason.
Rudeness spans to all backgrounds. Hell, my own people rank right up there, but when one group(you know who I'm refering to) stands out so much, then it should be considered a valid issues. Most American blacks are not immigrants, nor are they denied public education. Yet they continue to speak in a manner that is not only purposely rude, but also confrontational. Even worse is that they expect decent speakers to conform, being completely oblivious to the fact that its their own folly.
I type all this stuff because it's what happens in NYC.. How come I don't have beef with other groups? Why? I'm by no means racist. It's just that I'm sick and tired, and even more so because it's a taboo to say this stuff in real life, whether it be school or at the work place.
-
Al-Doggity, I guess you do have a point. People working for the DMV, whether black or white, are rude. But that's sort of missing the point, which was rudeness and ebonics.
No, I'm not missing the point. I addressed the point. You see what you want to see, especially if you're going to look at the world through color-coded glasses.
I don't live in a black majority neighborhood right now, but I did live in Harlem when I was in college and a few years afterwards. I'm not claiming there weren't any rude people there. Yes, it was definitely rowdier than the UES, but I loved my old neighborhood. There were some trashy people there, but there were some great people there, too. I can honestly and 100% truthfully say I don't recall having one argument with someone I interacted with in passing during the 4 and a half years I lived in Harlem.
I'm not saying there are no assholes there. I won't even argue with you if you claim there's a slightly higher rate of assholery there than in some other parts of the city. However, it was just a neighborhood. The people were overwhelmingly cool and it was easy enough to get about your day without incident. My building had a lot of white people in it and we all got along pretty well. I still have friends up there and the whites haven't fled yet.
When someone tells me that the majority of interactions they have with blacks are negative, I have to believe that it has less to do with black people and more to do with that person's attitude towards black people.

That's as ridiculous as asking me why I don't have beef with ANY ethnic groups at all. I can't see into your heart or mind. Just because you've developed certain ideas about certain groups doesn't qualify those ideas as unassailable tenets.
In several of your posts you've made generalization about various groups- some were positive generalizations- but still that shows your willingness to make generalizations.
Also, I'm not convinced you understand what racism is. When you establish and embrace negative opinions about a racial group based on your interactions with a few members of that group, you are a racist. If you repeatedly spew those views in a public forum, then you are an AVOWED racist. The fact that you feel your negative beliefs are justified doesn't change that. Hitler and George Wallace felt they were justified, too. (I'm not saying you are as evil as either of those men.)

Well said Al.
BTW, my closest friend is a black man who grew up in Harlem. Nicest guy I know (next to me). :)

Its good to see that others also like to volanteer and help the youth.
I used to help the lads in my area improve there fitness and strength. but ive had to stop it recently.

what english language did he butcher? i was unaware that there is an "ideal" english language in existence.
There is, it's called the Queens English. ;D

Al, ...there you go again, ...another slam dunk from the 3 point zone.
If everyone could remain as calm and as articulate as you in the face of absolute ridiculousness,
...we will have accomplished something. Personally, I just walk away and can't be bothered.
For those without understanding, you can bring it. For those who want to remain set in their ignorance...
...I suppose that's their right to remain ignorant if they want.

What's your ethnic background? Your experiences could be directly related to your own background. Meaning attitude and acceptence of certain kinds of behavior.
I hate anyone who gives me an excuse to do so, including my own people. I was not always this way, but I've found that being tolerant all the time leads you down the gutter. Thank heavens this was in my youth. Now I am an adult and my opinions are pretty much solid and wont budge unless I realize some great fault of my own.
You live in the City. Now, comparing Harlem to lets say Bed Sty or Jamaica, is like comparing apples to oranges. Harlem is different. Get yourself a place in a rowdy place somewhere in Queens or Brooklyn and then compare and contrast your experience with Harlem, and the places I've just told you about.
Not to generalize, but you live in the UES. Millionaires row, yuppie heaven, close acess to a great park. The whole package. If we were taking social caste, you'd be miles ahead of me. What my point is that you obviously are very well off financially, as opposed to a middle class, under 21, college kid like myself. You can shake off rudeness, unofficial crimes, I can't. Why? Well, for one I don't live in a yuppie place where there's no adversity. A yuppie place that's full of people who's very nature is tolerance to the extreme, which is not a good thing always.
Have a nice day.

That's pretty painful. If you're going to use sports phrases, please use them properly. This is like nails on the chalkboard.
You would just say "slam dunk" (a phrase coined by the late great Chick Hearn. I miss Chick.). There is no three point "zone." It's the three point "line." Draining a three pointer would be more appropriate with the picture of a ball going in the hoop.
I would just stay away from sports phrases. :-\

What's your ethnic background? Your experiences could be directly related to your own background. Meaning attitude and acceptence of certain kinds of behavior...
I'm black, I'm 27 and, if I put in enough overtime, I will be lucky to make $50,000 this year (that's not a bad income, but this is New York) I live on Second Avenue, which is hardly millionaire's row. The most common apartment type east of Lexington is a studio or one bedroom walk up. Even from Lexington westward, there are a lot of studios and rent stabilized apartments occupied by lower-middle class types. I say all of this to point out you can't always judge a book by it's cover, and you often judge incorrectly.
Incidentally, why do you think my background is relevant when it comes to accepting certain kinds of behavior, but you feel that something about your background renders your point of view unassailable?
Also this:
but I've found that being tolerant all the time leads you down the gutter.
What does this mean? Seriously, how has being tolerant led you down the gutter?
-
how about she just stays away from the politics board instead?
Naw, she's a great addition to the board (when she's not hawking those pills).
I appreciate her comments earlier, but all of those points more accurately apply to her. Even if you don't agree with her points, she's probably the most articulate political board regular and she doesn't lower the tone of debates too often. She usually remains pretty level headed and diplomatic, something I fail at quite often but still find admirable.

what are you talking about? ??? she's one of the biggest retailers of bullshit on getbig. and she's probably the most condescending poster on top of that . . . one of those things would be tolerable, but she's got them together.

I have never found her to be condescending.
I think she has a lot of controversial opinions, but from the posts I've read, she remains pretty diplomatic when defending her beliefs. I don't read too many of the other boards, but when she's not posting about her pills on this one, she's a solid contributor.

Search more posts, wrong person bud. She is very condescending unless you buy into her BS or buy her BS products like those shit pills for your car. She adds nothing of value except childish pictures and snide remarks for those that disagree, not to mention all her comments about country in which she does not reside. Good addition to the board. ::)
As far as THIS topic, there is much truth to the notion and saying so does not make one racist, just someone with a correct observation.

Wow. I can't believe I missed this the first time. I guess I was preoccupied with trying to make some other point.
You do realize that this post confirms my suspicions, right? You DO take the worst of what you see and use that to form opinions about the black community, even when you know full well that it isn't an accurate representation.
You don't dispute that I probably had a relatively decent experience living in Harlem. You just assert that my experience would be different in a different setting.
Harlem isn't some gilded community of artificially selected, mega-rich blacks that exist exclusively between 110th and 155th. It's a pretty accurate cross section of what the New York black population looks like. There is a healthy mix of poor people and financially secure people, all with different temperaments and educational backgrounds. There are areas that are very nice, but it is not, by any means, an exclusive or exclusionary neighborhood. Convincing yourself that largely uneventful life in Harlem is tantamount to some type of unexplained, 1-in-a-million cultural aberration proves to me you're looking for trouble.
I haven't spent much time in Jamaica, but I don't know what you're going on about in reference to Bed-Stuy. It's almost a mirror of Harlem, right down to the rapidly diversifying community. One of my former co-workers bought a brownstone there and it's a pretty decent area. The crime is pretty localized around the projects.

Nobody speaks the "English" of old but speaking ebonics and sounding ignorant is a matter of social class or being "new money" as some would call it, which is the case for athletes like Michael Vick.

I'd say that was the case for any 'nouveau riche' whether they be Black or White, athletes or musicians.
Look at some of Michael Vick's caucasian counterparts... you can take the girl out of Kenner,
...but clearly Kenner is still in the girl. :-\ ...then too who would describe Rosanne as the epitome of refinement? :-\

I was always told to eat my vegi-tables, especially the ones found in the Fridgidare...
Many White folks down south love the word 'figgerator'.

Anyone watching Vick's mea culpa today saw a wealthy and privileged black man use the word "axe" in place of the word "ask".
What gives with even high profile and monied black people absolutely butchering the English language. You'd think sounding like a moron would be something they'd want to avoid.
Language is developed at a very early age. I cannot tell you why so many Blacks say the word 'aks' instead of 'ask', but it's probably safe to say that Mr. Vick is not from a privileged background with highly-educated parents and friends. I think that would have a lot more to do with a person's language skills than how much money or fame they currently enjoy.
The assistant principal at my high school held multiple degrees, including a Ph.D., and was one of the most well-respected school administrators in our state and as clearly as the day is long, she would consistently say 'aks', something many of us were both puzzled and intrigued by.
-
Well, plz excuse my arrogance[;D] but I am black and personally I think my english is quite good, considering I started speaking it kind of late as a teenager. No matter what anyone's background may or may not be, improving one's language ability is always possible.

immigrant blacks usually do speak well,it's the local inner city trash that has no desire to improve themselves that we are talking about.

Is Bush black, because he's sure doesn't know how to pronounce word correctly.
And working in the inner city I have seen lots of people who know to speak well, actually, it's kinda of a switch "off" that everybody uses. With your boys and friends and family you speak one way, using slang and local terminology, and at a professional setting using correct pronounciation. I have actually been more accustomed to white people using more curse words in their normal everyday talk (just like on here) than black people.
-

I knoooooow. Bush is incredibly inarticulate.

Yes and no.
The reason you don't say 'aks' is because you weren't raised saying 'aks'. A lot of these kids only heard 'aks' from the time they were born until the time they went to school and even then, they heard 'aks' nearly as often as they heard 'ask'.
-
Is Bush black, because he's sure doesn't know how to pronounce word correctly.
He's extremely rich White trash. ;)
Personally, I think one should at least know how to pronounce 'nuclear' before being allowed access to The Button. The fact that the President is still talking about nook-ya-ler weapons (and families, lol) gives EVERYONE in the country a free pass for right now...but, we should all strive to do better.
