Bullshit. Deadlifts and squats are the foundation exercises to build leg mass. The blocky look seems to be caused by huge obliques.

Why would squats cause wide hips?
Anyone claiming this, is clearly not familiar with the insert points of the muscles involved (Hello Vince Gironda!).
Check the hips and the waists of these Olympic lifters, who does more than their fair share of squatting their training:
Same goes for deadlift. You'll only get a big midsection if you're constantly pigging out (Hello Shahriar!). What part drugs will play in the gut growing I don't really know, but it sure ain't the deadlift or the squat.
The fact that a lot of people don't squat properly, but rather do something akin to a good morning, is another issue.
But if done properly, squatting is outstanding for leg development. Why else would Olympic lifters have better sweep than most bodybuilders?

maybe he means a "squat" ass...

hahahaha....stop trying to be lazy, just do them and shut up! ;D
And don't forget to eat your oatmeal ;)

I wouldn't worry about developing a wide waist from squats and DL's. Squats are very good, but DL's are overrated. I mean most people don't know if you should do DL's for your legs or back. I dont do regular deadlifts, but i do romanian deadlifts for hams.

Wrong, To build leg mass roids are the foundation then genetics of course...
stay away from heavy deadlift and squats, there's a difference between a bodybuilder and powerlifter
leave your EGO out of the gym.

no def not. most naturals cant afford NOT to squat and deadlift to add that basic mass.
most pros did the heavy basics for years and built most of their mass using the simple basic exercises.
BUT a bodybuilder should build strength in a higher repetition range than powerlifters and should do the exercises bodybuilding style...thus avoiding "good morning" squats etc.
-
avoid them? :o why?!
squats and deads give you both good size in the muscle groups they hit and help build GREAT over all power! for those that are too pussy and chicken shit to actually do them, try them for a solid month and see what kinda size and strength gains you get from them.
and I'll say it again for all you leg press heros, unless you've already got massive quads from your legpress greatness, gtfo the leg press and get in the cage. 315LB SQUATS FOR REPS will do more for your leg development than any amount of leg pressing ever could.

deadlifts arent overrated..they add brutal thickness to your body (back, hamstrings, glutes and to some extent quads..depending on how you do them). the majority of people who dont squat or deadlift..just make up excuses to avoid hard work.
but: you have to use the exercises in the correct way as a bodybuilder. a bodybuilder should use a weight that lets him contract his back as he deadlifts (thus you should as a bodybuilder avoid 95% to max weight most of them time).
for any basic exercise.: bench, squat, deadlifts...there comes a point where injuries become a big factor (most naturals never come close to these amounts of weight tho)...i.e when you become brutally strong in the basic exercises. thats when you should increase your reps to let you work intensely but with less weight or put the basic exercise late in your workout and thus letting you work with lighter poundages.

first good post from you ;D!!
agreed! 315lbs deep squats for reps (non goodmorning style!!!!) is very good for a natural and will for most people mean that they have good leg size

I have my moments every few thousand posts! ;D
honeslty though..as long as I've been training, I wish i'd have done squats and deads from the beginning.. from the results i've gotten in such a short amount of time, I'm in love with them. Especially squats.
-
In my opinion a person could develop huge quads by following this simple routine (and not have issues with hip growth):
Barbell Front Squats - 4 sets
Barbell Back Squats - 4 sets
-
There is a diffrence between a wide waist and a thick waist,
A thick waist is what u get by deadlifting, a wide waist is what u get by excess insulin 8)

ohh yes, i been in this game for 12 years..started working out when i was 14-15. and i have had my periods of laziness where i havent squatted or deadlifted..not much happened to my physique when i didnt (im a natural). a natural JUST CAN AFFORD NOT TO DO THE BASICS. i tried all kind of fancy routines....but in truth they are just lazy man excuses trying to hide behind psedu scientific bullshit.
sure you have guys like dillet who claimed never to squat and only did leg press hack squat and leg extensions.
but if your hormonized to the max you can get away with lots of things a natural cant....the margin of error is wider for a aas user.
a natural has to use the most effective exercises. (i.e the basics)
there are 1000s of different workout routines..but for a natural the eternal constant should be the basic exercises.
squats (or front squats)
deadlifts
bench press (or low incline bench press)
these exercises should be done bodybuilding style (if your a bodybuilder)

Hey guys
"SQUAT IS KING OF EXERCISES "!!
No excuse !
As a old fart I have squated over 35 years !
Now I favour higher reps smith-machine full-squat due to a chronic low-back problem.
Squat to puke ! ;D ;D

yes..or simply squats.....as heavy deep squas build hamstrings too. but i have always loved the front squats too.
some people get confused by the pros workouts...they can do lots isolation movements because they already have lots of mass + they do alot of ineffective stuff that their extreme hormone usage masks.
im willing to bet most pros would look basically the same if they only worked out 3 or max 4 days a week using mostly the basics..with of course some isolation movements.
in my opinion most pros could cut their isolation work in half and still look as complete as they do and not see their physiques become powerlifting physiques.
lots of guys do alot of unecessary things...just because they love lifting and are obsessed.

Yeah! And your waist is wider than your lats, as we can see on the picture...... Pure chance???
I just watched the Ben White episode "In the trenches" and there he claims that squats and DLs are NoGo for BBs because they just create a blocky look and wide waist. Same goes for many other pros (Wheeler, Dillet, Ruhl,.....) and also amateurs I know personally so it kinda confuses me....
But please don't think that I'm too lazy for these exercises guys, I did them from my first workout week on (4 years ago...)

Yes ,I think so
many years of heavy weights & high sets maybe make your waist wider . ::) ::)
Take a look at Tom Platz's body .
-
musclecenter has good legs but what on earth is going on with that tiny upper body, brutal 12 inch arms.

Yeah, sure Platz had a friggin wide waist. And that's exactly the point of my thread. (http://www.getbig.com/boards/Smileys/classic/grin.gif) Maybe he wouldn't have had such a waist if hed did more isolation movements instead of heavy squats and DLs all the time ;)
An aestethic physique like Dennis Wolf can't be built with heavy squatting and DLs. :(

you sound like one of those guys that just "lift to look good but don't want to be big"...which is find as long as you're not curling or stretching in my squat rack! >:( >:(

So Dennis Wolf or Ben White aren't big for you??? (http://www.getbig.com/boards/Smileys/classic/grin.gif)
I wanna be big, BUT I don't wanna look lika a FRIDGE!!!!! ;)
-
That is not true in the sense that it will only occur if you have a hereditary propensity for it. For instance, Sergio Oliva squatted frequently and certainly never had a wide waist.
-

Bullshit! Read my above post about Sergio Oliva.

I don't know why people over complicated everything
I see tons of guys squatting 405 with 2 inch range of motion..training their ego instead of their muscles..
it seems that making your calves touch your hamstring is out of style when squatting these days
315 or 225 on the smith for reps seems like an insult to them..to be honest I prefer the smith machine

those dudes are on tons of drugs, you stupid fuck.
hope this helps ;)
also looking at dennis wolf physique..he could need more lower back mass and hamstring mass....in other words deadlift!
also lots of other pros have squatted and deadlifted heavy.

look, deadlifts will add some thickness to abs for sure but it will be compensated by other groups growing.
can you gain mass without doing squats or deadlifts sure...but why would you do something that is not as effective as those exercises? also for a natural, you gotta do the basics. some steroid abusers can grow big legs without squatting..but even most of those squat...until they are squatting 550-600 or more for reps..(because at that point squats can become very dangerous) and when that happens they use leg press (after they built a solid foundation) or hack squats and can afford to be more lazy.
also i doubt you have 30 inch legs or are anywhere near as thick as the mentioned guys.

I'M STARING TO LIKE THE BULLSHIT YOU POST! good words man! NO BULLSHIT!
And what are you talking about being lazy when your squats hit 500-600lbs?! That's when you start seeing some actual size on your legs! You cut your teeth on teh bullshit weights on the way up to 500! My legs are finally a solid 28" all thanks to squatting. They never broke 26" no matter how many leg presses, hacks, extensions, or whatever else I did. Squats are king.
let me rephrase that...FREE WEIGHT SQUATS ARE KING! Smith machine makes it even more dangerous than a regular squat. Instead of letting your body follow it's own path, you're stuck with the machine's under heavy ass weight. DUMB!

umm im saying many mofos cut back on squatting when they start reaching 600lbs..atleast among pro builders. i never said its the right thing to do...but those guys have built a solid foundation + use tons of drugs.
a natural should use the basics and add some isolation work to that (not too much) workout 3-4 days a week. not complicated at all.

That sounds better.... I thought you were giving the nancies a reason to stop squatting. Some people think 500 is the end all and in reality, that's just getting in the door when it comes to squatting large but, you're right I do agree wiht you. I don't plan on ever squatting over 600 for reps on anything because I already have knee issues and don't want to make them worse than what they already are. Wraps do wonders but can only do so much under that kinda weight over the years. I just started squatting 500 easily. Soon enough! I wish more people would stop looking for excuses NOT to work hard and reasons NOT to do exercises. Bodybuilding and powerlifting are MEANT to be hard work. If this shit was easy, we'd all be big and looking good.

hell no, you misunderstood me. what i was saying was that some skinny bitch shouldnt look at the pros training and copy what they do..because many of the pros have squatted heavy when they where up and coming and already built those 30 inch quads and can do leg press and hack squats to just maintain that size + all the drugs, also to avoid injuries.
if you want big legs? squat "olympic" style to get those quads round and thick.
-

yep!
Most people only need 3 exercises hit hard for the larger shit and 1-2 for the smaller stuff if they push it and will grow like weeds. Problem is, most people are afraid to bleed a little in the gym. If you push it and break through that mental block that burning pain is when you stop and realize that's when the growing starts, they'll grow like weeds. After you have that good base like you suggested, then you can add iso movements to try and build in some good seperation, etc. I don't think you should worry about SHIT when it comes to legs like inner vs. outter quads, cuts, etc. until you're squatting 500 or more lbs or have legs big enough they rub holes in your underwear when you walk around.
-
maybe he means a "squat" ass...
Nothing wrong with that
-
Not performing squats or deads is like having a good car and not being able to accelarate it. Lots of bbers avoid squat and deads and become weak... just relying on roids... weak muscles lead to less capacity to hold on mass gains. Look at Ronnie, performs heavy squats and deads, and won 8 Mr.O's...
