So today im round my brothers and his Girlfriend tells me she wants this machine, I ask which and she says its a machine you sit on, it moves one way and you have to move the other, "woking your core and its great for toning the legs and stomach".WTH does this mean, I have always taken the core to mean abs and lower back, where did this stupid thing come in about "THE CORE", it seems like a byword now for people who dont know shit about fitness but want to sound like they do.Also "toning", people who use it have no idea what it means, like these machines are some miracle spot reducers of Bodyfat. She also has a swiss ball. Her main concern is losing fat.How do I tell her she needs to eat healthy, drop her daily calories quite dramatically and do some cardio? Also how do I explain the core was invented by personal trainer who had no money and wanted to train people at home so they invented a "swiss ball" to work "the core" beause its cheap ::)

bwahahahaha! ;D ;D
What can I say about core training, you haven't already said?
Since when do diet and cardio help you drop fat? haha

Core secrets by Stallone..
HAHA Slys trainer looks like someone they just pulled off the street and asked him to read his lines of a board behind the camera
-
Haha, actually thats Gunner Peterson, he trains alot of celebs, like, Brooke Burke, J-Lo, Sly and a bunch of others. He had a cameo in Rocky Balboa in the training scenes.
-
-Alex: "Yes baby, that's how that training works. I'm the core and you move around it the best you can"
-Random girl: "that makes sense. I exercise while you pump my core?"
-Alex: "Yes."

You are the one who doesn't seem to know a thing about anatomy or fitness. The core is the epicenter of the bodies movement. It's where all movements start and how your body stabilizes. The core is not your abs. Go read a book and learn something before spouting foolishness.
The core is underneath your abs and also includes the erector spinae (lower back). You need me to list the core muscles for you or are you going to pull out a basic anatomy book and see for yourself?

Thanks, I almost melted down over the stupid uneducated comments on here, but lets not forget who we're dealing with on these boards, so lets give em a break, they know not what they say!

Exactly. Engage the core and keep your feet planted nicely for stability. If it's too much, lighten up

You told me nothing new, I meant abs and lower back as a generalisation, I still think its a bunch of bullshit, deads and some crunches are all these "core" people need, are you a PT?Do you have 12inch arms and a certificate?

Whenever someone starts raving about the 'core' I just show them a picture of an inshape pro BB and ask them "How many 'core' exercises and ball movements do you think this guy does?"
Squats are the best exercise for 'core strength' and stability.
It's like the term 'tone'....last I heard 'tone' was a shade of color.

Hardcore Gym`s....A Thing Of The Past
by Tim Wescott
I'm about to say quite a bit about the sad state of affairs in most gym's today ,and I know I will offend some people, but....... too bad!!! It makes me sad to see the gym's of today, and their participants, wandering around aimlessly from fancy machine, to fancy machine, in quest of something most of them don't know how to find.
I'm talking about learning how to achieve results, with their meager half-hearted efforts. Most of the people in gym's today don't have a clue why they are there, or what they are trying to accomplish. Sure, Mary might want to lose some weight, but she usually doesn't have a clue as to how to go about it. I know this may sound harsh to some, but back in the day, newbies in the gym learned a lot from bodybuilder's and more experienced lifter's.
Bodybuilder's and power-lifters are actually frowned upon these days in most gym's. It's a shame because these people should be used as inspiration, and watching them train could benefit a lot of people.
As far as giving them a clue as to what intensity level is required to actually get results from their training. Gym's back in the seventies, and eighties, were really gym's, and not fluffy, frilly, "Fitness Center's, " trying to pass themselves off as gym's. People worked together in pursuit of their goals, and learned from each other.
Today's gym's, and I use the term loosely, are too caught up in making money, and could care less about their clients progress, or lack of progress, as is usually the case. There's too many people that don't have clear-cut goals, and know nothing about training, even though there are "personal trainer's " at most gym's. The sad part is a lot of the personal trainer's I've seen know very little themselves, and most look like they can't get out of their own way. If you are going to train people, at least look like you train a little yourself. I call these half-assed personal trainers, "professional rep counters", as that's about all they are doing that is correct, in their approach to training clients.
Another thing I find ridiculous today is fad fitness items. Swiss Balls, rubber tubing, medicine balls, and TV sets, are a bunch of junk, that should be kept out of a serious gym. Do you really believe that doing crunches on a big blue ball, is any better than doing them on a floor, or a bench? Stabilizers come into play more with the Swiss Balls some would say . Stabilizer's also come into play when squatting like an animal for 20 reps, with a heavy weight, but that's too much like work. I guess I'm just "old fashioned," but give me a gym full of sweaty, hard working animals, who are hungry to grow, and make progress, any day.
Today if you lift anything remotely heavy, or make the slightest grunt while squeezing out a hard rep, you get asked to tone down the noise. Don't even think of chalking your hands, you might get some on the spotless floor. What do these people think a vacuum cleaner was invented for?
I've trained at 4 hardcore gym's, at different times, for years, places where you made progress, and other people in the gym were genuinely concerned about you making that progress. It was no holds barred, all for the betterment of the guy's working out. If you didn't train your ass off, you were considered a wimp.
Sadly, it is getting increasingly harder to find a good old sweatshop type of gym, where results are demanded. Today I see people come to the gym religiously, every day, only to talk ,roam around, use the same weight forever, usually one plate on some contraption, for months at a time, gab on their cell phones, or some other practice that has nothing to do with staying focused on their training. These same people wonder why they do not make progress.
Ask a typical trainee in today's gym why he or she does a particular exercise, and what part of the body that exercise is for, and they look at you like you asked them for their wallet. I think if you're going to workout, then you should at least have a basic understanding of the exercises, and body parts they work. Maybe even sweating a little once in a while would be productive . I really miss the "old school" gym's, and the animals that inhabited them. You can take this rant with "tongue in cheek",but I won't. Train Hard !!!!
I obviously (I hope), meant this article to be taken with a healthy dose of sarcasm, but I hope I opened peoples eyes to the fact that they should ask questions at the gym (not while someone is training) ,and do a little research, before beginning their program. Learn about what you are doing, and you'll do it better .
STAY PUMPED!

You told me nothing new, I meant abs and lower back as a generalisation, I still think its a bunch of bullshit, deads and some crunches are all these "core" people need, are you a PT?Do you have 12inch arms and a certificate?
I told you the anatomical fact. That obviously is new to you since you refer to the core as the abs.
I have 19 inch arms and sub %10 bodyfat I own a gym and make a lot of money training people and have done so for the past 14 years Unlike you, I'm educated how the body works and I make a very good living helping others as opposed to sitting in my parents house hogging their computer and raving about how I don't understand the basics
Deads and crunches are fine. Even great. The point is, the better core stability you have, the better you'll perform these other exercises and the more benefits you'll reap from them.
In case you're curious, you don't need an ab ball or specialized "gay" equip in order to strengthen the core. That works, but people don't have the time and patience when what they really want is visible results. What also is effective, however, is doing the exercises correctly over and over and supplementing with a little direct core action. That's plenty for most people.

Does Ronnie Coleman work on his core? I would think he'd want to be pretty stable when squatting 800lbs. ;D

No, it's not BS, the problem is you're so brainwashed by standard BBing-type workouts you can't (or truly don't know better) see beyond that, besides hip dominant training, core and posterior chain training is next. If Milos really wants to debate about TRAINING sport-specific training is my specialty, he can deal with the BBing crap, but when it comes to training athletes.....he can leave that too me!!

The word "core" has a terrible stigma attatched to it. This is mostly due to the fact that a certain 24 hour gym uses it to death and the only people that will pedal it are tiny, semi-lean, never worked out a day in their life, weaklings. I have a hard time even thinking about the word without disgust coming over me.
It IS important but you can hit it harder without a freakin ball than you can with. You dont have to do standing front raises with one foot off the ground to affect the core.

I'm not a huge ripped rich dude. I'm in pretty good shape and I make a comfortable living for my family. Nuff said. That's completely irrelevant and I regretted posting that stuff but somehow people equate being a trainer with 11 inch arms and a lack of knowledge. That's not the case in the real world every time. Just in certain gyms. There's a handful of people that constantly educate themselves in order to better their understanding in their chosen profession. I don't claim to be the next charles glass or better than anyone else. I do claim to understand what the core is and how to stabilize the body, however, which was the whole point of this thread.

Are you suggesting that "peroni" makes his boyfriend wear a leather mask and crotchless leather trousers, after which he whips him for not being a man like "peroni" because he doesnt do swiss ball crunches?

I don't have a thin mat. I can't afford one so my boyfriend and I just snuggle in our cardboard box under the freeway overpass.

Having worked at 24 hour fitness for almost 2 years, I can say that I'm just tired of hearing about "core this" and "stabilizers that". Considering that 90% of the clients who are tought this stuff just want to lose a few pounds and gain a little muscle, it's completely unnecessary. The 24 hour training protocol can have entire 50-minute sessions of nothing but "core training." Then when it comes to back training it's 2 sets of single-leg standing cable rows. I know the theories behind it and controlling your midsection and core is a big help in lifts like the big 3 - bench/dead/squat, but it's such a stupid buzzword now it makes me want to choke myself.

I prefer to call it functional fitness
For those people that are just everyday people....they need functional (or useable) fitness that can be applied to everyday living.
Benchpresses, squats, deadlifts, etc...wouldn't be ideal for most

True, but neither is a single-leg stiff-leg deadllift done on a half balance ball. Hardly something duplicated often in everyday lift.

Well....I wouldn't see the benfit of that for anyone.....
but everyone has very different gaols or what they want to achieve
-
I usually don't include any core training in my clients programs
unless they ask for it.
Most just want to lose fat or get bigger.
Still most office worker weaklings should strengthen their core area
to make everyday life easier.
I mostly teach core movements to people that are trying to
improve their athletic performance.

'Core' training is like dude said...simply a buzz word. The exercise balls greatest achievement was giving personal trainers some variety in programing sessions for their clients nothing more. It has no more benefit than any other exercise.
When I was a personal trainer I used the exercise balls to help housewives learn to squat by putting it against a wall because they were too stupid to understand simple instructions. I would also line up half a dozen then run, jump and slide across the top of them...which I'm convinced has not aided my core stability, though it's a sweet trick.
That being said, I am a firm believer that any exercise is better than no exercise so if it gets them off their asses, power to the balls

Great thread!
To my fellow citizens of GET BIG. I would like to put forward the following get board legislation to be voted on by us the gen board members and singed into law by Pres Ron.
The term of "core" shall be banned from use on this board, as its use refers to a lack of any and all real knowledge of genuine bodybuilding training. The use of this term give me the same feeling as nails on a blackboard.
:Paddendum rider on this legislation- The topic of swiss balls be banned as well except for the purpose of farting on them or throwing them at any "trainer" that uses the term "core".

Ok guys, people answered me, but no one actually gave me the answer I was looking for, I know the answer to my own question, but no one on here seems to understand the answer I'm looking for. So lets try again. I want someone on here to give a an actual reason as to WHY you think specific core training is either "gay" or not necessary. MUIRVSE said "because squatting and deadlifts are enough" which is complete BS. Knny said because it's "functional fitness that might pertain to everyday life" which is completly true, exept for one thing, it also play one of the most major parts in the training of athletes.
Now, I'll ask again (and I would like a specific answer instead of just "it's gay" ::). Please, lets not turn this thread into a shitfest. I love subjects like this and discussing functional-type training.
-
I answered you Joe, but your question isn't very specific...cept you used the term "BS" a few times
...from what I can gather you have a different perspective of what 'core' training is. You're more about sports functionality and balance. Lets say you have a client that wants to be better at golf for example you lay them on the ball and mimic a swing. thats all well and good, but frankly there is no better sports specific training then actually performing what it is you are trying to improve or achieve aka hitting golf balls. I may be off track with what your after, if so please ask more specifically.
-
My PT has me doing a lot of swiss ball abs exercises, some with a medicine ball. As well as, a few no-weight leg exercises for "core" training. Is that ok?
-
Please define what the "core" is and what exactly it does. Please.
-
Please define what the "core" is and what exactly it does. Please.
I'm not a PT. But, i think it is your stabilizing muscles including your abs and lower back, right? One exercise he has me doing, goes like this. You lay on your back, with your heels on a swiss ball. Lift up your hips and curl your legs, in and out. Your feel it in your hamstrings and on your sides. Because you are keeping your trunk area tight. What do you think?
-
I think that's crazy stuff man, but if it works for you, by all means keep it up.
I feel doing a broad range of exercises and keeping your workouts consistant is enough to keep a strong "core"
-
Just work your abs and do hypers, deadlifts, good morning,squats,reverse-hypers,and you`ll have a fantastic "core" !! :)
Back in the day we called it working abs and lower back/erectors.
I hate these "fitness" catch phrases.

I agree it is an arguement over verbs , nouns and semantics. :'(
I am as scientific as anyone but look, the deal is to go in the gym and bustass on what you do.
-

There is much more to the "core" than what people are posting on here. The "core" consists of many muscles besides what was mentioned on here, one of the main one's is the transverse and also in my opinion, the PSOAS, which has a direct correlation to low back weakness, pain and in some cases instability.
When you look at this diagram you can see where the psaos begins and ends, it actually starts at the "core" which includes lower lumbar and erector spinae. If the psoas of any part of the core is weak, especially the transverse abdominus (the muscle that basically holds you erect) your transfer of power will be tough. Example of "transfer of power" would be a baseball player, tennis player, quarter back. Lets take the baseball player, when a player is at bat, and swings, the "tranfer of power" begins at the ankles, then transfers to the hips, tranfers to the core, where the rotation of power is, then to the upper region. The bat speed comes from the "core".
MUVIRSE mentioned that Squats and deads were enough, again dead wrong, because very little of those smaller muscles are not getting worked or activated.
Also, you have phasic and tonic muscles, on muscles and off muscles, in my training wether with the general public or working with athletes, when we work the lower body or doing hip-dominant exercises, I have them go through a series of muscle activation exercises to turn those muscles "on" so they will fire correctly........glute are a good example of being an "off" muscle until activated. Activating the muscles not will help it fire more effeciantly, it also aids in preventing injuries.
-
& the question?
-
go research some charles poliquin articles he can tell you why. or call you a moron either one.
Hey fuckhead, I'm getting pretty sick of your juvenile BS and name calling. Like Milos, Poliquin is good but he's not the be-all to end-all, everyone has different beliefs and THERORIES, I just believe mine makes more sense, you can have one person say one thing and one say another, it doesn't mean they are wrong. Tell me where I'm wrong in my post "know-it-all"??

I read poliquin all the time, doesn't mean i have to agree with everything he says. Learn to think on your own, do your own research and draw your own conclusions.....but I don't think your capable of that. The majority of my off time is spent doing research on everyone and everything that pertains to my specialty!

& the question?
I guess my question is to give me something scientific on why core work is BS.

It makes more sense for you & for you to teach to others....right?
This is why training is debatable. I couldn't train someone like CHEK....that doesn't mean his theories are wrong....just wrong for me to teach someone else.

During my Judo days Poliquin made me ingurgitate about 30g of fish oil shit until I literally shitted oil all over.
One "trainer" doesn't hold Gospel. Take what fits for you.

Mind sharing some of these "activation exercises" that just cant be done any other way? Are you talking about static core positions? Stretching or yoga of sorts? Elaborate please.

because core training is best done by heavy squatting and deadlifts. :)
Even though the name of this board is
GETBIG
that is not the goal of everyone who steps into a gym, whether an Apollon Gym(basic) to an LA
Fitness(pretty, shiny machines)
Some people can no longer deadlift, hyper extend or squat. Weight on the upper shoulders, overextending the rotator cuffs are a no no.
A swiss ball or wall squat helps keep the hip, knees, feet in alignment for a proper squat.
I am now getting serious lifters coming to me to stretch them out. Lower back/hamstring. shoulders/traps, midback, quads are all tight.
Warming up before you jump into the weights is a good thing. 5 minutes to stretch or on a cardio machine works wonders.
Dynamically stretch the spine and trunk. Stretch the quads, hips/hipflexors, hamstrings, shoulder girdle. calves/shins, biceps, tricep, neck extensors and flexors.
as you get older, your body will thank you.

Apparently you didn't read my explanation on why it's important or it just went completly over your head and this is the best answer you can come up with, unless you can come up with a better explanation, you're just babbling. Justify your post instead of just saying that people have fallen for a new "secret" or their being robbed.
