Title: I am joining a new gym this week!
Post by: ripitupbaby on January 02, 2008, 07:59:29 AM
I figured a good way to start 2008 would be a new gym!  I've been at my gym for at least 4 years now, and I am sick of it.
My current gym has it's pros and cons.  It's old, dirty, and run down, but it's empty, quiet, and they leave you alone and let you do pretty much whatever you want.  The equipment is kind of crappy, and a lot of the cardio machines don't work.  They haven't done anything to update it since I have been there, and it's getting kind of gross.  The old manager left a few weeks ago, and the woman who runs it now is a bitch.  She yelled at me twice the last couple of weeks for wearing my sneakers from outside into the gym, as if it was going to make the gym any dirtier.   ::)
However, it's a Golds Gym, and my membership gives me access to all of the Golds in the area, including one that's open 24 hours about 20 mins away.  I'm going to lose access to that, which is a bummer.

We decided to get a week pass to the "Workout Club" down the street, which has been there forever, but I always figured it was kind of a lame gym, so I never checked it out.  Well, it's pretty sweet, and I am pysched!  It's CLEAN, the equipment is all new, there is a lot more variety, and the cardio theater is SWEET.  There is a brand new facility opening about 15 minutes south, which we will also have access to.  It's a little foo-foo facility (the ones with the juice bars and all that stupid crap), but it's going to have a huge rock climbing wall in the center of it.   ;D

I think that a new gym will really get me motivated for training and inspired for my contest prep this year.  The change of scenery will be nice.  I've only been in there once so far, but here are a few things I noticed, good and bad:

+ They have two power racks.  There were none in my old gym.
+ Dumbells go up to 150 pounds (good for my husband lol)
+ They have rowing machines...I love rowing machines and I have missed them so much!
+ They have ribcage pullover machines, which I have also missed.
+ FOUR stepmills (versus two), and they all work!!
+ There is a separate "ab room" with tons of equipment in it.
- The benches are all "new" and sort of fancy...they have these built-in racks that slant upwards, and they are all sorts of adjustable, etc.  I prefer the straight-up old-school benches, nothing fancy.  So it's gonna take a little getting used to.  They are a little lower to the ground, though, which is nice for me.  I wonder what they will say when I drag in 80 pounds of chains tomorrow.   :D

Now my next challenge will be to talk them in to sponsoring my membership.   ;D

Man thats very cool rip!  I always felt the other gym was holding you back some from the lack of certain equipment.  When they built a new larger/better equipped gym for us i compared it to a fish getting put in a bigger tank, they get bigger LOL.

Have fun! and what a cool way to start the new year  ;D  look forward to hearing your experiences there.  Mine is kind of the same type gym, which like you said is good and bad.  i would say the worst part of mine is all the idiots who have no etiquette and don't know how to act in a gym.  Sometimes it's funny though to see the stuff that goes on.  I find myself saying to myself, Oh Lord have mercy, many times on some of the shit I see.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you'll get alot of beginner crap in most of the "mainstream" gyms these days.  There's always something amusing going on!  Especially at the foo-foo type gyms.   ::)

There isn't much I'll miss about my old gym...just the benches and the emptiness (it's sooo easy to do supersets!), access to the 24 hour gym, and I will miss the Nautilus compound row machine, which I LOVE.
The machines at the new place are all different though, so the change will be good.  I can't remember the brand...they have a lot of Hammer Strength machines, and some Cybex stuff, but they have a whole section of this other brand, which I will have to remember to check out again tonight.

I've never heard of anything like this happening.  Is the gym in her house? oh brother  ::)

As far as I know if you continue to pay your Gold's fee you will always stay at the same rate and have access to all Gold's gyms.

Oh brother.  ::)
There is actually a PF right down the street that's open 24 hours, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.  PF hates bodybuilders, powerlifters, and people who actually train hard.  If you don't train around people who like to train and who train hard, you will not have as much motivation to train harder yourself, and you will not have anyone to learn from in the gym.

Did I mention it had free tanning? It's only 240 bucks for the year, if I don't like it, then I go back to Worlds and lose a few dollars. other than the dumbbells though I really don't see the problems. Big, clean nice place.

Hey Rip, what kind of perks does your gym have? Notice that I can now bring anyone I want with me to the gym, that saves a lot of money. I pay 10 bucks a pop to workout with my buddy Meathead. Do you get a free  T-shirt?(actually they said they were out, but I got a voucher). Half price cooler drinks? That's a lot of savings. We have all seen my key tag, thats pretty sweet too. Massage chairs? Sounds like heaven to me!

I'm surprised they let you bring a guest for EVERY workout.  So I could join and just bring my husband for free every time?  That sounds fishy to me.

I haven't signed up yet, but you usually get a t-shirt everywhere you sign up (which ends up being a garage rag).  Tanning is the same, unlimited for $240 a year, and very very nice tanning beds.  I got Athlete's Foot from the fkn tanning bed at my old gym....gross!!   :P

I don't really use a lot of the perks and ammenities...I go to the gym for good, clean equipment, lots of variety, and heavy weights.

I actually think that I'll be the only BB/competitor at this gym, but that's mainly because of where I live.  I'm fairly certain this gym will be supportive of BB and powerlifting.  We'll see what happens when I drag the chains in there tomorrow night.

Well, they had a 10 dollar a month option, but then you get none of the sweet perks like the key tag. I am assuming that since you are basically paying double they don't care if you drag someone along with you every time.

I hope you never make any noise while you are training, or drop any weights.  The "lunk alarm" will go off.   ::)

Don't be hating on all my perks. Energy drinks for 1.50$! You hear that sound? Thats the sound of all the money I am going to save jingling in my pocket!

You know what is fishy though, I tried to write them a check for 240 for the year, but they said I HAD to give them my routing number and they would take out 20 bucks a month. I am not crazy about giving out my routing number, but like I already said, you can't beat the perks. I do wonder why they can't just take the money up front? I bet they are gonna stick me with some charges or something and I won't even know it.

I wouldn't be surprised.  I think it works out better for them somehow if it's done monthly through an EFT, maybe it shows them bringing in more money per month or something.

OH, and you could save yourself a great deal of money if you just forego the energy drinks altogether.  Have a cup of coffee.   :)

Coffee is good, I am drinking it now. TBH, I went in there about two weeks ago and didn't give it much thought, but I noticed that they were waving the 99 dollar start up fee till the 1st, which was yesterday. For whatever reason I called to see what the start up fee was now that the promotion was over, knowing that I wanted a change in scenery at least for a few months and the girl was like "well, we haven't heard from corporate yet, so if you get down here soon we will still waive the start up fee for you, but tomorrow it's 99 dollars". So I went and joined cuz I am a sucker, but for real the perks are sweet. Don't you wish you and your husband could BOTH train for 20 bucks a month?

Yeah, but I need to train at what I consider to be a GOOD gym, and PF just isn't it.
The new gym I am joining is only $20 a month for each of us, so that's $40 total, and I am still going to try to talk them into sponsoring at least my membership, if not both of ours.

We don't have those type of gyms around here really. I paid 300 a year at Worlds, but that was because my buddy owns it, but it is a real shithole. He never fixes the equipment. I think it's normally 45 a month or something like that. The big one that we have is 200 for a start up and 70 a month, but that is too far so I just go with my buddy sometimes, like when I was training him to chicken out for the Mr. Getbig. ::) I don't know why gyms charge so much around here tbh. Maybe cuz we are close to Pontiac and they want to keep the crackheads out. I can't wait to go to PF and wear a spaghetti string tank top(can you PM me where your hubby gets his? ;)) and some Zubaz and grunt and groan like a lunatic ;D

Rip, congratulations and good luck with your new training environment.
I changed gyms in Nov. of 2006, and from a progress standpoint, it was one of the better moves I’ve made.

But a word of caution…
You may wish to verify with management that you can use all of your “accessories” like chalk, chains, etc. BEFORE signing that membership form and locking yourselves in.

Be very clear in explaining exactly how you train and ask them to be very clear in explaining what they do and don’t allow in their facility.

Good luck!

Thanks!

I'm gonna definitely check into that first.  I have a guest pass for this whole week, and I am going to bring the chains tomorrow and ask them first.  I hope they don't have a problem (I'm a small girl, and I can smile alot, so maybe I can sweet talk them ;D)...it's not the end of the world if they have a problem with it, as I only work with the chains every other week, and I can always drive up and use my friend's bench at his supplement store for the chain workouts (I already do that for my shirt workouts), but it's just more of a pain in the ass.  I'm assuming boards and bands aren't a problem, but I'll check into that too.

I looked around a little more last night.  The equipment is a combination of Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, and some brand called Technogym.  They have a ton of Hammer Strength, which I love.

Last night, we were training, and I hit a couple poses in the mirror to see how I'm looking, and my husband was like "you can't pose in here yet FFS, you're still on a guest pass!  Do you want to guarantee that you won't get your membership?!"   ;D

I didn't ask yet.  I am working with the chains tonight, so I figured it would be harder for them to say NO if I walked in with them rather than describe them.  They weigh 80 pounds, but I am going to just sling them over my shoulder and act like it's no big deal.   :D

Ha-ha…
You just reminded me of 80’s pro wrestler Hercules Hernandez. He used to walk to the ring wearing a Louie Simmons-sized chain around his neck.
Then I glanced at your avatar and envisioned you walking into the gym in the same manner.

Be sure to let us know how it turns out.
This type of thing has been a hot topic as of late.

Well that went different than I expected.  We were weary of bringing the chains into the new gym, so we actually decided not to bother tonight and went over to the old gym.  They stopped us on the way in the door, and the bitchy manager was like "NO way.  I don't want you starting this stuff here because then everyone is going to start doing it.  I don't want to start something like this."   ::)

So we left and went over to the new gym...they were like "Sure, no problem."  We brought them in, and of course everyone wanted to know how to use them, etc.  I was totally surprised...completely opposite of what I expected.

Yeah, and that might attract more interest & business.  ::)

I’ve trained at two different gyms in which members were allowed to (and did) use chains, etc.
They did their thing, didn’t bother anyone, nobody bothered them, and there was no mass epidemic of other members bringing and setting up chains on every bench (how many trainers are serious enough to do that, anyway).
A few people watched and asked questions. The PL’ers were very cool about it.

Sounds like you have the right type of personality, and you obviously took the right approach with the new place.
You may even end up doing what I did and become friends w/ the owners…if you want.

Some people prefer to avoid that inner-circle, but I am extended certain courtesies that are not offered to everyone. Just don’t abuse the privilege, and make sure to reciprocate and throw some kind acts their way.

Best of luck, and keep us posted.

Yep...we usually end up pretty friendly with the people who run the gyms we belong to, and it always pays off...in fact, one of our closest friends to this day is the owner of the gym we belonged to about 6 or 7 years ago (too far away for us now).  We just never really clicked with the people at the old gym, and it got worse when the manager we liked left and this bitchy woman took over.  My husband is looking forward to writing a letter to the ownership once we leave, letting them know the reasons we left.   ;D

When she made that comment about everyone wanting to use chains if we started it, I was like "are you serious?  Do you know how much these chains cost?"  As if a regular gym-goer is going to spend money on a set of 80 pound chains to train bench press.   ::)

We're thinking that once we get settled into the new place, they will probably let us leave the chains there if we want to.

Chains are placed on either ends of the bar.
During the rep, resistance is gradually increased due to the fact that less and less of the chain is on the floor as the bar ascends.

(http://i.b5z.net/i/u/230085/i/Ryan_Celli_Powerlifter_3_ezr.jpg) (http://i.b5z.net/i/u/230085/i/Kris_Hicks_Powerlifter_Powerlifting_preparingforlockout_ezr.jpg)

Louie Simmons:
Training with chains in this manner accomplishes three things.
1) We have maintained our original weight in order to use the correct percentage for explosive training.
2) We have overloaded the top portion of the lift, which normally does not receive sufficient work because of increased body leverage at this position.
3) A neurological response to build explosive strength is developed. This training will train you to drive to the top because you cannot slack off at the top phase as you used to.

On a side note…
Some power-lifters use elastic bands in the same manner.
Bands are a lot more practical in that they’re much smaller, lighter, and easier to store and transport.
Cheaper, too.

Several PL’ers I’ve talked to also prefer using bands over chains.

I signed the paperwork today, and I'm psyched.  Of course they had a million options for memberships, and they didn't cut me much of a break  >:(...but I ended up getting unlimited access to all six of the facilities in the nearby area (within 30 mins), two of which are brand new, two story crazy foo-foo fancy gyms, and one of which is a 24-hour keycard access training studio like 4 mins from my house!  I didn't even know it existed.  That takes care of the 24 hour gym problem.

Anyway, I got this deal for me and my hubby for $39 each/month, and I also added unlimited tanning for him for $10/month.  I skipped the tanning deal, which I'll probably end up regretting when I buy a tanning package for my contest prep.

I'm psyched!

that's my goal back maybe.   I'm working on it...just got back from the gym (gym A by the house, gym B by the work) from gym A

gotta go cook evil fattening food in a bit at the restaurant...for other people.  I think I eat vicariously through the dinners I bake.  Creating something I can't even afford to nibble on...

I decided today that I'm adding the tanning for $10/month...I can't beat that anywhere, and I think I'm gonna want to get some tan on before the Arnold in a couple months.

I'm psyched too...I will be starting my prep in April, I think.  Right now, I am getting very psyched for the bench meet February 23.
I'm looking forward to seeing how your prep goes too, Luv.  This is gonna be a great year for all of us.   :)

It's a "Workout Club"....that's what it's actually called lol.  The name is one of the reasons that it took me so long to get over there and check it out.  I figured it HAD to be lame with a name like "workout club" but it's pretty damn sweet.   :D

Rip,
What is the demographic as far as the other members?
Older, younger?
Anyone else into PL'ing or even semi-seirous about any kind of training?

And about how old are the owners? I'm curious how long they've been in the "business."

Rip, once you make home there, ever think of teaching a class once a week (i.e. Chain Training) in return for a reduced membership?

It looks to be pretty diverse, I've seen kids lifting with their parents, college kids, older people, couples, working people, etc.
I asked when I signed up if there were any competitors in fitness or BB, and the guy didn't think so, which doesn't surprise me as I live in NH and there aren't alot of them anywhere lol.  One trainer there does bench press competitions with his wife...I know them, they are an older couple, and I've competed with them before, so that's cool...prolly why they are understanding about the chains.
There seem to be plenty of guys who train alot, we saw a few big dudes this week...it's funny because we've lived in this town for 5 years, and we work with the NPC and know a ton of local people involved with fitness, etc. and we're like "who the hell are all these people and where did they come from?"  :D

Yeah, but it would probably be something like posing for Figure or BB, or contest prep in general.
I doubt there would be a lot of interest in a chain training class taught by a little girl!

We went to the 24 hour studio gym tonight to check it out.  We got the massage chairs too!   :D

It's a pretty nice little gym...nautilus machines, plenty of cardio, bench, smith machine, some free motion machines, and dumbells up to 65.  Not much leg stuff, but it's ok for some workouts and definitely cardio.  And it's got the massage chairs, nice tvs, and free coffee 24/7.

Don't join there. I am already pretty much done with PF, some chick got on my case about not using collars on the flat bench and I kind of laughed so she brought out a contract with the rules and showed me that I signed it, oh brother. I have been going to Ballys this week, I have a lifetime mem. there. I will give PF another shot since I am paying for it, but it really does suck. Also, and I know this is a lot of peoples pet-peeve, but if I have an important call, I need to take it, yet you can't talk on the floor. I think PF is a great gym for using cardio and tanning though. I have a massage chair at my house, not a real good one, just one I got from Art Van, so I haven't used the ones there yet. If they had BBing mags or tabloids I would chill in them and drink a red-bull pre-workout, but they don't even have mags.

Did she actually come out on the gym floor to scold you and show you the contract?

Hey Dani,
About a 2 years ago inMusclar Development, Romano wrote a nice piece about Planet Fitness (and similar centers) – right around the time that cop was kicked out of a PF for grunting or yelling, or some such sh*t.

I wonder if “corporate” comes down hard on them about these things. Sh*t rolls down hill & I can’t imagine anyone – male or female – having a stick so far up their ass that they would bust your chops about collars.

I’ve never seen this, heard of it, or even fathomed it. You should have told the woman it’s a safety precaution – in the event that you get pinned under the bar without a spotter you can dump the weight to free yourself.

Yeah, she actually came back out with a copy of the standard piece of paper with all the rules on it. I was acting like she wasn't serious and just kind of laughing about it so I guess she felt the need to show me, good idea about the safety thing though Montague. I also saw this same girl go up to a guy who dropped his DBs too hard and showed him the proper way of putting them down. ;D But he was using the 75s and she showed him with the 15s or something small, so I didn't really see her point. I went there today though and it wasn't that bad. I am sure I will get kicked out eventually though, I am not a grunter but I don't take their rules serious enough for them.

What happened to you seems ridiculous.
But, something like dropping db’s I can understand, as this tends to be a sore subject with me at times.

It’s not so bad if you [have to] drop them paralell, but dropping them on end knocks the sh*t out of those welding connections.
It can get awkward balancing & pushing 90’s and higher when they’re excessively wobbly and those plates start “walking.”

We had a jerk at our gym who would actually drop his db’s from the top portion of the rep when doing presses. He’s been gone for a while. I don’t think the owners even had a chance to confront him. He got bitched out by the other members.

I think that may be why some gyms are implementing those damn rubber dumbbells.

The DBs at PF are rubber, it's just a noise thing that they have a problem with. I don't know much about flooring, but whatever is going on with this floor it is virtually impossible to put down the DBs and not make noise. I was wearing my MP3 the first time I put them down and I was shocked at how loud they were, of course everyone stared at me ::)

Rubber db’s are nice in that they don’t rust, never need repainting, make very little noise, and can never become loosened.

The only downfall I see with them is that when you get into the higher weights, the “plate” portion is so thick that it prevents you from bringing the db’s close together for a peak contraction (as I like doing) when doing presses.

As for the noise…
What are the floors in your gym?
Do they not use rubber matting?

I take it dead lifting is a no-no.

Gotta go meet the girlfriend, now.
I look forward to continuing this discussion.
See you on the E board.

Actually you can DL there, but for some reason just the DB area seems like it it raised or something. It's just impossible to not make noise when putting down the DBs. Come to think of it, I haven't DLed and have never seen anyone else yet, so I have to check on that. I did squat on the smith machine, but I can't remember if there is a squat rack.

haha that is unbelievable.  I think my husband and I are gonna have to get a guest pass at PF for one of my bench workouts.  I wonder how long we'd last.   ;D

Dropping dumbells quite often is necessary to prevent injury.  You don't have to fkn throw them, but they're gonna make some noise!
The weight room in my old gym is a converted indoor swimming pool, so they just covered the pool with something, and it's still totally hollow.  It was SO loud when you dropped the weights, even if you just barely dropped them.

My new gym has bumper plates for deadlifting, they're pretty sweet.
