Title: Rolling shoulders for shrugs...
Post by: Croatch on March 31, 2008, 04:54:17 PM
Is it me, or it this utterly pointless.  It always seems to be the guy blasting the 60's, who really focus on rolling their shoulders back.  I'm pretty sure this isn't great for your rotator cuffs.  I never roll my shoulders and my traps are pretty decent...strange? ;)

I finally agree with you.  I hate it when I see guys do it this way.  The movement is just like when you shrug your shoulders when you say "I don't know".

Kevin Levrone always rolled his shoulders while shrugging. Dumbell or Barbell.
Title: Re: Rolling shoulders for shrugs...

Then Levrone suffered rotator cuff injuries that you have not heard about...or he was very lucky.

The best way to activate trapezoid muscle fibers and avoid 'working your joints' is to bring your shoulders up and back, and then straight down again. The motion varies a bit person to person, but circular motions can be very destructive.

Doesn't mean much.  Most pros have horrid form, half reps, etc.  They don't grow because of their "technique".

Rolling the shoulders simply doesn't hit anything better, therefore...pointless.

they grow because they receive unlimited supplements each month.  Imagine how big you'd be if you could eat 5 tubs of creatine each month, Croatch!

For sure, but it doesn't mean much.  I'd be sure that it leads to more injuries, than better trap development...that's the point.

Tell that to Levrone...and he wasn't doing no 60's in M3.

Levrone would not be able to argue with basic anatomical science and biomechanics.

Total waste, traps to ears all the way up and all the way down, dont dip your chin to your chest
Title: Re: Rolling shoulders for shrugs...

Agreed. On the way up, if you bring your shoulders back just a smidge, you will involve more posterior trapezoid and middle rhomboid fibers.

Levrone shrugged while rolling his shoulders with 500 plus pounds in his DVD, He had some of the best traps in the sport. He never had shoulder problems that Im aware of. He did behind the neck presses with 400lbs on the smith machine too. Most people would have joint trouble from those two movements. Levrone did what worked for him and he came out ok.

Yes, but those results are anomalous, if, indeed, he did come out without injuries.

Rolling your shoulders is probably the worst thing you can do to your shoulders. I see these high school kids that pop dbols like tic tacs at the gym doing that shoulder roll.

WRONG, there sarge,, ask any physical therapist or trainer that is the WORST thing you can do. You have any idea how small your rotator cuff muscles are?  You are supposed to try to bring your shoulders to the bottom of your ears.. Keep rolling your shoulders and see what happens ::) ::)

No monkeydong, nice try though.  it is because I had nice big and very strong shoulders.  Nice try, but someone like you shouldn't respond to a thread that involves discussing training since we all know what you look like.  Stick to what you know about, planting flowers and Goodrum trivia.

I have seen experts divide the traps into trapezius I, II and III. You can hit the lower traps by bending forward more. Just shrug straight up, the torso angle makes the difference.

Exactly.

Doing bent BB rows will hit the lower portions, when doing shrugs it's best to do them straight up and down. i like to hold at the top for a 1 second count.

Bingo.  The shoulder girdle is one of the weakest links in the entire body.  The shoulders should never rotate one tiny bit during a shrug movement IMO.

I tilt my body slightly forward, backward and straight up and down when I shrug to hit more of the muscle. The Trapezius muscle covers half your fucking back, not just the part that joins to your neck that everyone wants to look good.

for overhead dumbell flyes you keep shoulders and elbows locked out.  Start with the weights fully overhead and lower to the sides to horizontal and raise back up.  the traps function is analogous to the pecs, so just as you isolate pecs with flyes you isolate traps with overhead flyes.

The question of rolling shoulders during shrugs is moot. Shrugs are a waste of time and energy.  Deadlifts and bent rows provide all the trap work you need.

I'm pretty sure that most people do shrugs just as an ego exercise to be seen holding heavy dumbbells.

Saying shrugs are unnecessary because bent rows work traps is like saying barbell curls are unnecessary because dumbell curls work bis too.
