tough call... sly possibly has more 'hit' movies, with all the rockys and rambos, among others, but arnie has the first two Terminators, Commando, Predator, among others, which were all great.
-
Sly has more movies youd watch where as Arnolds good movies are better than Slys good movies.
-
.
-
Both had great movies and both had some pretty ordinary ones. Both Rocky and the first two terminators are great films and very highly regarded by film critics. But i think Arnie wins it...
-
Remember, one guy has the oscar, and one doesn't.
One guy was actually NOMINATED for best actor, the other not even close.
One guy carried 2 franchises over 20 years, the other guy, no.
Sly wins. But I enjoy them both just the same.

Wrong.. Arnold was the highest paid actor in the world. 30 million per movie.. Sly could only wished that he earned half of that

Are you going by highest paid?
Or by most accomplished?
The answer would be different in each case.

Who do you think gets more residual income? Sly Kills Arnold with the Rocky and Rambo series alone.
Rambo+Rocky> all Arnold movies combined.
-
Arnold's films were all the same, action and pure entertainment but with no real meaning.
The Rocky saga was symbolic and inspired millions, that to me rises Stallone above Arnold.

Wow this is really BB related right :D :D :D :D
It doesn't belong into the Entertainment board no? hahahhahahahaah what a hypocrite :D :D

People always talk about whos greater action hero... stallone or arnold.. but lets face it, arnold is a fat bag of loose skin with a dodgy heart nowdays, and Sly is in better shape than 95% of people on this forum.
Stallone could act and wrote most of the best films he starred in... arnold can't act for shit i think you all know this.

atleast Arnold is natural, SLy on the other hand is all growth hormone
-
only rambo 1 and the recent one was anygood, the rest were shit.
rocky 1-4 were good, 5+6 shit
terminator 1,2, and 3 were all good, predator was good, end of days was good i thought.
i declare it a draw.
-
yeh, rocky 6 was grossly overrated in my book.
It just didnt have the same feel as the other rockys

You judge someone by their best work. Rocky is better than any Arnold movie, and Stallone wrote it as well as starred in it. Arnold, to my knowledge, never wrote anything.

you forgot to add ERASER in the list for arnold. it was a hit also
-
you forgot to add ERASER in the list for arnold. it was a hit also
eraser got 5.8/10 so it's not one of the top 10 movies according to the voters of imdb.com
if i make a list of the top 15 it will fit
but then stallone will have a no of films too
might change things, dont know

rocky iii and rocky 4, believe it or not, didnt get a very good average rating on imdb
6.0/10 and 5.7/10 respectively

yes im surprised at the low ratings for some movies and those are not upsetting me the most - cobra got a lousy 4.5/10 rating >:(

Both were great, but I'd have to go with Arnold.

Cobra, Rocky 3 and Rocky 4 are all 10's, IMDB fucked up. Ask Quick, Go4It, or Mussolini if you don't believe me.
-
Looking at the top lists. I change to Arnold. I forgot his stuff.
-
Well, I'd say a draw.
And, neither would say they are actors.
They'd say, "Movie stars", as there is a difference.
-
Arnold
-
I'd say that with movies like Cop Land, First Blood and Rocky, Stallone has done more complex films that Schwarzenegger.
And in Cop Land Stallone was in very respectable company, something Arnold has never done.
Arnold said in some interview that Sly is much more complex person than he is. Like, Arnold is more of a Happy-go-lucky kind of a guy. Whilst Sly has some kind of european pessimism in him. And I think that it shows in SOME of Slys movies.
Both have done excellent hangover past time as and a few crappy ones too.
-
both were getting paid $20M in the 80's. they both win.

Commando got 6.0/10??
WTF? That movie had the best lines in the history of film making!!!!

haha mad hate
arnold was in pretty good shape in T3 a few yrs ago, and i'm sure he still exercises. either way they both could buy new hearts if they wanted
-
you need to acknowledge that Stallone writes, directs, produces and stars in every film, Rocky I won best picture in 1976.

i havent counted the replies but i get the impression sly is winning!!

Stallone I guess. Arnold had 3 great Terminator films, Predator 1 was f*ckin incredible even today and Conan was decent. Stallone had 4 great Rockys and 4 awesome Rambos, Assassins, Cliffhanger, etc.. He rarely made the mistake of getting out of his type of genre. Not like 'Jingle all the Way' or 'Kindergarten Cop'. ;D
-
Id go with Stallone on the strength of the Rocky and Rambo movies
They have both made some entertaining shit in their time though :)

Arnold. I'd actually watch an Arnold movie over again. Don't know that I've ever watched a Stallone movie more than once.
Rocky was good and Oscar-worthy, but Sly screwed it up by putting out the piss-poor sequels and ruined the original film.

Arnold kicks Sly's butt in terms of box office return per movie. Even though they both have about $1.6 billion in total box office returns for all their movies, Arnold's averages around $70 million per movie compared to Sly's $50 million per movie. Doesn't mean that Arnold's movies are better, but, on average, a lot more people go to his movies than Stallone's.

My vote goes for sly. Arnold has very good movies, but i have to say that he doesn't have movies like Rambo or Rocky that you want to watch over and over again. Terminator is good once a year or so, but i can watch Rambo every week.
-
I read somewhere that Arnold makes up in the millions on residuals from all his movies....

Which doesn't exactly answer the question, 'bebop'

I read somewhere that Arnold makes up in the millions on residuals from all his movies....
I don't think it is residuals but more that owns points in the films he does as does most major stars. I think the residual formula is the same across the board for all SAG members. It is based on what you personally earned for the film. The more you make the more your residual checks will be. But owning points in the movies will ultimately pay you more in the long run. Most major actors will take a pay cut to own a piece of the film. Like Nicholson and Batman. His pay was not much at all but he made tens of million of dollars by having points in it.

arnold was able to make up for his lack of acting skills be picking parts that fit him.
-
Arnold by far. Look over the movies that he has done vs Stallone. Almost all of arnolds are good times.
-
on the back-end Sly makes much more money, they are all HIS movies, he is not just a paid actor in them like Arnold.
-
Intersesting debate, I have most of each of their films so I obviously like both of their movies enough to watch time and again. I would say that Stallone is a more well rounded and versatile actor by far than Arnold. He has made or been in more films that tug on your emotions wether it be anger, revenge or sadness and yes inspiration. Most of Arnold's where just for fun comic book style over the top action. Anytime Arnold tried to get serious in a movie it just did not come off well.
-
Stallone Hands Down!!!!!!!!!!
-
Which doesn't exactly answer the question, 'bebop'
Arnold by far...
Cant beat The Terminator, and Predator....
-
Arnie had more of his "terminator" personality in his movie. Fairly unemotional, relentless with some dry humor one liners thrown in. He presents the image of being unstoppable while stallone shows a lot of emotion in his movies. At the end of first blood he had a emotional breakdown and in the Rocky movies he showed a lot of self doubt and human flaws that led to the heart to heart convos with his wife. As someone mentioned Stallone tries to play more complex characters while Arnie sticks to a simple direct character.
Lets not forget the simmering rivalry both had off screen and on screen. Stallone shoots 20 guys and Arnie makes sure he tops stallones bodycount in his next movie. Arnie introduced Brigitte Nielsen to stallone - we know how that ended. Apparently Stallone helped the author of the book ARNOLD in an attempt to defame Arnold which backfired on him later. From what I've read Arnie tried to use the same psychological tricks he used during his competition on stallone. At one point Stallone had angrily said "why fight? There's enough room for both of us". Arnold would then backtrack and claim he was misquoted.
Overall they had some great movies in the 80's/90's.
-
they both win...
Arnie fans are loyal and sly's fan are loyal, this thread is not going to settle anything..they both mad great movies and they both made horrible movies.
-

Sly has had 2 great movies in the past year and a half.

Great???? Rambo 4 and Rocky 6 aren't great movies. They are rehashed junk.
If Stallone is so creative, how come he keeps digging back into the well of Rambo and Rocky? Those franchises are old and tired and should be retired. Stallone needs to come up with something original.
Arnold's movies are pretty simplistic action movies, but at least, other than the Terminator movies, he didn't keep going back and doing sequel after sequel after sequel.

Rocky Balboa was an excellent film.
Granted, the series might have been padded a bit, but he tied the whole series together very beautifully.

Thought I'd refute your position with backup from Rottentomatoes.com. I am surprised to find that Rocky Balboa had a 75% fresh rating from critics. (see http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rocky_balboa/ (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rocky_balboa/)). Guess it's a better film than I thought.
Still, Rambo 4 is a dog, with only 33% approval rating (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/john_rambo/ (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/john_rambo/)).

Have not seen the last Rambo, but to me, that series never had the emotional pull to as much as Rocky.

I know what you mean, but this is the film that Stallone felt the audience wanted to see to end the story, and I have to agree with him. I know there are some that were looking for the montage and the soundtrack and all that was good about the first 4, but you have to admit that say 3 or 4 is way different than Rocky 1, much the same this last film was different from 3 or 4, and in fact it reverted somewhat back to the way Rocky 1 was.

My point was that those two steroid monkeys (Sly/Arnold) aren't the greatest actors in the world.

Obviously, no.
We could make a long list of OTHER actors that are more skilled at their craft, but that's not what this thread is about.
However, why don't you tell me of another action star of their caliber that has actually received a BEST ACTOR oscar nomination like Stallone did?
-
Newman, Redford, Bogart, McQueen and Eastwood all starred in "action" films & were all nominated at various points in their careers, but lacked the necessary tricep and ab definition that puts them in that special Stallone/Arnold category of comic book acting.
Look, the fact is that Sly & Arnold needed steroids to put themselves over in their movies. I believe that's my point.....
-
I prefer Arnold cos well he is God but Sly is the better actor ;)

just like every other actor takes cocaine, speed, X, heroin.

And Bogart and McQueen did massive loads of alcohol that may or may not have helped them with their craft. So what?
If it was just steroids that made Arnold & Sly successful movie stars, then why weren't Ferrigno and some of the other past bodybuilders who tried to make it in the movies more successful? (Talkin' to you Kevin Levrone and Bob Cicherillo.) And how come Haney, Dorian, Ronnie & Cutler aren't movie stars? They've surely done the steroids, but you don't see anyone clamoring to make them movie stars.
Neither Arnold nor Sly are Oscar caliber actors. (Yes, I know, Sly was nominated for Rocky. What other Oscar nominations for acting has he held since then? None. However, he has won tons of Razzies for worst actor of the year.) They are what they are...action stars who make believable action heroes.

Razzies dont mean shit, stallones worth more and will be more and his work is more relevant then any oscar winner. Denzel, Jamie foxx, adrein brody etc..Halle berry has a Oscar and a Razzie

I love it when someone says, well sprinter X takes steroids, but sprinter Y took cocaine. That's not the issue. Let Sly get off the juice and see what kind of movie he can make....

He wasn't on juice for Rocky 1-2 and Copland and those are his most critically acclaimed films..

clean in Rocky 2?
But yes, he used to act pretty well. Certainly in Rocky I (I believe), and in Lords of Flatbush. Can't argue that.
Later, I think he relied on a suitcase full of crap, as they found at the Austrialian airport, I believe.

You think he was on gear in Rocky 2?? Lol...anyway..you take what he relied on in his suitcase (gear) away from Arnold...he would not exist as a pop culture figure...with Stallone you can't say that!

I like Stallone more, but cant knock arnie, he owns everyone, he has a drug fuelled contest under his name and not one media outlet mentions it hahahha..
Stallone and arnie are inspirational, Stallone in his movies and arnie in real life
