...never see a a waist this small these days
-
one of the greats, awesome build, very underrated.
-
In fair contests would've been Mr Olympia at least once or twice, along with Padilla.
-
I recall him saying his waist was 28" there

As I have said, Robby was one of my favorites, but was NEVER in top form in any of the Olympias he entered. Never deserved to beat Zane on the actual days of the Olympias...

Being in top form's only part of it-Columbu was never in the same sentence with Robinson or Padilla, never the top BB on stage, yet was allowed to win twice. Same thing with Yates' condition in some of his "wins".
-
Yes, I agree...Franco both times, A in 1980, even Dickerson in my opinion never should have won.
But Robby would have a major drop-off in form from other shows he'd be in when he'd do the O.
-
You know that Robby fought in Vietnam and was bayoneted through the leg by the Vietkong looking for survivors to torture. He didn't flinch. That man is worthy of Black Watch membership IMHO.
-
I did a bit of training with Robby in 1981 and the guy is absolutely awesome. He is still in great shape and is a man I have the greatest respect for.

no gay stories about Robbie, "big Jim"? :o
-
I took those photos when I was 15 at his bb camp with Mike Katz in 1978.
We had some rich guy in our group who kept complaining how much pain he was in when Robby had us running up and down hills, outside, with cinder blocks in our hands and having us curl them on the way down, pressing them on the way up...dropping 'em and continuing to run till you could do no more.
Well,,we were loving it except for the whiny rich guy.
Robby got so sick of him that he had us gather around, and he told us the Viet Nam story...even ripped his pants down to show us the bayonette scar.
Never saw the rich dude after that.

No Squadfather, I don't have an unkind word to say about Robby. Roy Callendar is another. Most of the rest are Fags though. Like yourself.
-
Robby is a true warrior.
However, I did had difficult dealings with him hiring him a couple of times as a guest poser. Just scrapes in the course of business events, tho.

hahahhaha, coming from the "man" who waited until a guy was lying on a bench pressing to grab his balls, BAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNG, absolutely brutal 14 inch arms, 4 inch wrists and belly sticking out further than your little bird chest. ;D
-
Robby won at the Olympia twice, but not the overall
cool guy

I think I look OK for a 70 year old. You on the other hand live with your parents, are still a virgin, are unemployed and basically are a fat fuckk.
You must be very proud of yourself.
Fat Fuckin Wanker
I'll crush your nuts with my pliers if we ever meet up.

If you have war like aggression...expend it in Iraq! ;D

Sooooooo, Robby pulled down his pants in front of 14 and 15 year old boys? What exactly was going on at this "camp"?
-
I was the youngest at 15....everyone else was 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, etc.
He was proving a point that there is never a reason to be a wuss when training....not when there are much worse fates, like having your whole squad killed around you in a lonely Viet Nam forest, and being the only survivor after taking a bayoinette to the thigh and pretending you are dead when you are not.
If you are joking, cool.
If not, try having some honor.

nobody likes you.

I like Squadfather, he is a funny guy. I only wish I was young enough to go to war in Iraq and slaughter these smelly fuckwits..... Oh to be 18 with a rifle again.
-
Haha...yeah...I am 44, and the US armed services will only take you up to 43, I think.
If I did not choose the professions, I'd have plotted my course in the Army or Marines...

Fantastic. They have to go to IronAge.
Do you have more?
The Beef
-
Yeah...got more I took of him, Szkalak, Tinnerino, Coe, Dreher....gotta dig 'em up though

what kind of a bodybuilding workout is that? ::)
-
Not only would you not see a physique like that today, but look at the condition he's in just for offseason! :o
The tie-ins, the shape of the muscle bellies....damn. :o
-
what kind of a bodybuilding workout is that? ::)
we did weights, too.
That was just one of the pre-workout, 'toughening-up' exercises he had us do.
I loved it and at 15 thought it was cool.

Correct, and the pics do not do him justice.
He was about 4-5 months out from the 78 Olympia here.
-
Great pic's Thanks
-
He got a hell fine back in 79 when he had everything paid for and didn't turn up at a Pro World show out in Australia Callender went on to win but most where there to see Robby, and that Nam story is a fact one tough dude. One of the all time BEST.
-
Great pic's Thanks
No, thank YOU for enlarging them!

Well, that sounds like Robby.
And, yes...that Nam story is the real thing. I heard it from him first person a few times...it was also recounted in one of the old Muscle Builders.
-
No, thank YOU for enlarging them!
;)
Post more old school if you have Them
-
Yeah...will do...I have shots I took as a kid personally of Coe, Tinnerino,Katz, Szkalak, Dreher...and even Lou Ferrigno's father, Matt!.....gotta scan 'em first...will do so soon.

I recall that show. Still, Callender looked great....around the same time he won the Diamond Cup in Montreal.
-
Callender was the winner easy and a real nice guy.Had one of the best chests ever.
-
Yes...you were at the Aussie show? Great!
He was another who could have/should have trounced Franco in the 81 Olympia.
And a very nice guy....you can also see him in the 68 Universe lineup, won by Zane in Florida, with big A in second....

>:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( ;D Look forward to them. Oh btw, Muscle Builder and Power had the Robby war story in it years ago.
-
Yup...I mentioned that, and I know I still have that issue...pretty true from what I know and very inspiring.
After what he went through, hard workouts were a joke for him.
He said he used to use buckets of sand in the service in Nam and old inner tubes due to no weights.
-
I hate it when we have a nice serious thread going that's interesting , exciting, and informative and squadfather comes along with worthless baseless attacks on someone who is trying to fill us in and give us some fresh positive information... sometimes squadfather is funny but his timing really sucks..he needs to pick his spots and attack those who deserve it, not on a nice guy whose trying to be informative...
-
Ummm...thnaks for your kind compliments...and I agree, but I don't think squad has said anything bad here.
And, usually, I don't really flame over negative posters. I tend to see value in and get along with all...
-
soooooo, to prove his point he pulls his pants down.
Well, emn, if you knew Robby at all, you'd understand, it wasn't in a gay sense or anything-he had shorts on.
-
wow great pics-one of the best ever
met him last year at a seminar-nice guy-still looks great
-
Thanks for sharing MJ.Great genetics, hardwork and access to lots of pharma grade drugs, love it. 8)

Until then;

I don't remember if I saw Robby at the gym or not. He did spend a few hours in our booth at the Olympia last year.

Goneaway...Big Mike Katz told me that a few years ago, Zane petitioned Ben Weider to start including the vacuum as a mandatory pose at the Olympia.
Needless to say, the query fell upon deaf ears ;)
-
I will post some unbelievable photos of Dennis Tinnerino taken in my gym in 1981...he was posing for us, and he was in contest form...with no contest for him to compete in for months to come!
I mean, how often does that happen with guest posers today?
And, I swaer, even 20+ years ago, Tinnerino is showing width rarely seen even today...
-
Awesome physique.. Crazy genetics.

they need to bring it back

Yes, Red Hook.
I agree.
Sadly, those days...they ain't never coming back :'(

Rich Gaspari in 1983/84 was the FIRST Pro BBer to STAY in contest shape all year round.
Unreal hardness on the guy, veins and cuts everywhere. Very inspirational.
Was a true champ...also on juice year round, lol.

No he didn't he was pretty smooth in the offseason although not fat by any means.

True...I saw him guest pose in 1988 and he was smooth...did not embarass himself, but was, by no means, in contest shape
-

Shawn Ray and Jaroslav Horvath are the only last two BBers who I can recall that have done a vacuum. They're also some of the few who have had oldschool lines and waists, which is somewhat of a coincidence.

There could be problems with that, with people maybe having surgery done to create the look, and drastic measures like that, but it would be great to see more of them. Especially on guys like Dennis Wolf, Dexter, Vic, and the others who have nice trim waistlines to make the effect even greater.
-
I bet none of these pics were taken at World Gym. Joe did not like photographers in there. Very rarely did I ever see one allowed unless Joe said yes and Tony Nowak said yes. I loved it when Tony played bouncer at the gym
-

Damn we're old :'( ;D Actually I saw him guest pose about 10 to 13 weeks out from the Olympia back around 86? He was smoother than I thought he would be. I remember thinking that there was no way he would be ripped for the O. Damn, was I wrong. ;D
-
Yes...likely won't happen, though

BULLSHIT-you dont know what you're talking about.
Rich was ALWAYS in contest shape-always.
Since my buddy was his roommate, I trained with him in the off season a few times, and he was never out of contest shape.

I dont know what happened when you saw him guest pose, but Rich was always ripped to shreds.
-
Johnny...I did indeed see him guest pose in or around 1988 and he was not his ripped self....still impressive, though
-
True...I saw him guest pose in 1988 and he was smooth...did not embarass himself, but was, by no means, in contest shape
88 and 89 was when Rich started going downhill, and was not in the same condition he was earlier in his Pro career, like 84, 85, 86 and 87.
Maybe in 88 he was over the hill with receptor down regulation, which lowered his placings and maybe he was not as ripped as he was earlier. He was back in NJ by then so he may have changed.
He was always in contest condition when he lived in CA.
-
Rich was one of the all-time greats

Looks great!

Okay guys...let the posting begin...
here I am at 17 with none other than Mr. Universe, Kal Szkalak...real cool guy who physically fought with Joe Weider trying to get his photos from him...
-
Check out Kal's Cannonball bi's...and the look of bewilderment on my goofy 17 year old face (sorry guys about the size of the pics...I can use some help in learning how to scan...)

Kal's crucifix pose went down in history. His legs were light but had a good upper body.

"Good" upper body? hahahaa
-
It was the Fukin 70s FFS. ::)
-
Great pics, keep them coming. Robby had a killer physique.
-
I saw Gaspari on Belmar NJ beach in mid 90;s-huge veiny guy-who then went to the Mcdonalds stand-very discouraging-lol
-

here I am at 17 with none other than Mr. Universe, Kal Szkalak...real cool guy who physically fought with Joe Weider trying to get his photos from him...
I remember Kal with a little pencil and pad of paper going around the gym and making little pictures of what Joe had. He told me he wanted to try and make his own equipment. When Joe came in he would hide the pad and pencil. He was pretty cool I thought. Never really talked to him much though. He was also the guy running around the gym to make sure we all saw Bertil Fox when he came in for the first time.

OK Johnny. ;D Look, no one is "always in contest shape". It's just plain stupid to say that. If this were true then there would be no reason to diet for a show. Rich himself knew exactly when to cut his cals and at how far out to get ripped.
I wish I could remember that exact date of the show. It was 86 or maybe 87. The show was The West Virginia Cup (no longer around) and it was held in weirton WV. Rich won the World Pro I believe in 1986 ( I was there) so it may have been 87. Either way he was fairly smooth. Now, in his defense he was in great shape and not like the guys of today so maybe we are arguing over nothing. To me being in great shape for a guest posing is not ripped. Nothing wrong with that though. Rich was in plenty good shape, but because of Rich's genetics he never really looked insane until he was shredded, anything less and he looked like the average mid level amateur. Rich was not a mass monster. I don't know when this pic was taken, but Rich looks rather young. (1985?) This is about how he looked at the guest posing. Maybe slightly smoother. Hell, I may even be able to get a few pics from that show.
-
Rich looks great there, big arms and chest.
-

Yes, he seemed to lose that look around 1989.
-
The Robby war story is bullshit, he told me so.
Really bix? I am surprised...thanks for the enlargements, by the way,,,
-
Kal's crucifix pose went down in history. His legs were light but had a good upper body.
Yes...when he took 5th in the Olympia...which he deserved, pretty much...but a very cool guy, nonetheless....
-

Wrong again Disgusted.
Gaspari was RIPPED YEAR ROUND, and he is not the only one. Listen my buddy was Rich Gaspari's roommate for most of the time he lived in CA. I trained with Gaspari before. I saw him many many times and he was in contest shape everyday-him and Haney both were. But Haney had no where near the hardness Rich had.
Jim Quinn was EXACTLY LIKE GASPARI. Huge, veiny, and ripped to the bone 24/7/365, in shape very single day of the year. Both could go straight from the gym onto the stage anyday of the week. Any week of the year. I saw Jim Quinn every single day for 4, 5 years straight, he was never out of contest shape in that time period. Ever.
Andreas Cahling was another one who was always in contest shape.
So to say no one stays in contest shape year round is bullshit-I have seen it many times.
And yes, Jim Quinn never did have to diet for a show.
-
hey Moose do you remember that commercial Rich did for Mega Mass around 91 or so? i remember watching that when i first started following bb'ing, there were a couple of skinny guys benching and Gaspari walks in.
-
Yes...when he took 5th in the Olympia...which he deserved, pretty much...but a very cool guy, nonetheless....
Steve O'Brien-Natural Mr. California (1980?), who is now a head honcho in the NPC and a promoter of the Contra Costa, used to be roommates with Kal, and Kal had been to my gym with Steve a few times. Big guy kal was.
Steve told me that Kal should have won the 78 Olympia, or at least be in the top 2 or 3.
I can tell you Kal's upper body was probably the very best during the late 70's.

I remember Rich was the ad man for Weiders mega Mass 3000 (or was it 8000?), I would laugh my ass off knowig the cycles he was on..... ::)

yup, sure do...Rich was in his prime at the time...

Kal held a small seminar in my gym the day I shot those photos...he literally said, "Look...I take steroids...it's a decision I made...if I get cancer ten years or so up the road...so be it."
Today, in his 50's, he is a champion bicycle racer....still big biceps...apparently cancer-free...so be it
-

And the funny thing is Kal still has toothpick legs despite the bike racing!
-
Well...I wouldn't say toothpick...but you can still see some pec dev and the bis are def still there....obviously augments the bike training with weights.
Looks good and young for a former pro...sort of emboldens the fact that drug use was nowhere near what it is today
-

I will bet you that Kal does not train with the weights anymore-and his Bicep is natural like that......
In fact I am pretty sure he does not train because if he did people would post it here-he lives in San Juan Capistrano, So Cal.
Lots of Getbiggers in So Cal....... Kal would be outed if he still trained.
-
Rich Gaspari was actually the first bodybuilder ever that displayed striated glutes...He took conditioning to a whole new level....Robby was unreal...incredible body and would be a champ today in this era...was definitely overlooked because he was black

Rich and Renel Janvier.

Rich was the first-still remember Flex showing a pic of his ass with striated glutes...... and going "WTF!"

I have also heard he does not particularly cotton to talking about his bb career...much like Ken Waller cannot be found anywhere...
-
Rich and Renel Janvier.
Yes, I competed with Renel in the 1983 Teen Scholastic Amercia show...he blew all teens and men out in that show...he was 18 and I had never seen such a clearly developed sartorius muscle in my life...
-
...
-
I think Renel Janvier ended up getting in trouble with the Law and spent some time in lockup. He was from Bridgeport, CT...not far from me...

I just remembered something, the 89 LA Open where Robbby guest posed and Arnold showed up with Maria, Ken Waller was there too! I forgot all about that. Ken was there and so was Rufus Howard, bis dude who won the AAU Mr America....... Lots of big names would show up at the LA Open.....

Thanks. He was a nut to be around. He used to love to embarrass me when I was out with a girl. He would always come up to me and who I was with and say "another one"? Then the girl would get pissed. He and Tony Pearson and Ron Depolito were the ones who convinced me to eat tuna and lettuce and water all the time.

Rich was the first-still remember Flex showing a pic of his ass with striated glutes...... and going "WTF!"

No prob. Yes, Waller was known for extreme tuna diets, and he was equally renowned for eating the largest post-comp meals on record.
