Title: Worthless trophy...
Post by: Moosejay on May 24, 2008, 04:58:15 PM
...someone mentioned on the Melvin Anthony thread that he does not want to jeopadize his health for a "worthless trophy"...

Robby Robinson, when I was working with him about 8-9 years ago...GAVE me his Master's Olympia medal.

Just like 'that'.

So yes...these guys think little of the trophies they train for....I dunno if I blame them, either

I won a total of 17 trophies....the one I hold dearest is the first I annexed....many I won in the 80's are beautifully crafted, hand-carved....when I won the CT in 95, I picked up the trophy by the bb's head at the top...and it snapped right off on stage in  front of the whole crowd....

There are thousands of amateurs who'd kill for those trinkets.

Very good point.

I trained at Zane's house a few years ago...and he had his Universe trophy right over the doorway...the same one he won when he beat Arnold in 1968...it was cool to see it right there in front of me after reading the stories of his and Arnold's exploits...

No dude...I am 44...started competing at 16...last competed when I turned 40 a few years ago...

Actually...it WAS funny...since I won that show when I was 31...I already had years under my belt and saw the humor in it.

I actually have this happening on video and always laugh out loud when I see it....the crowd was actually pissed when it broke...I just looked at it like I had gotten TWO trophies! :D

I presented Mike Katz with a lifetime achievement award made out of crystal...gorgeous award...and he dropped it (my fault due to poor hand-off)   and it broke into two pieces onstage....but we fixed it!

I said that Moosejay...

Maybe I should have made it more clear to everyone what i meant when I said Melvin doesn't want to jeopardize his health for a worthless trophy...While a trophy may have extreme sentimental value to the recipient...It really does not have any monetary value to it...so in hard times the trophy unlike a gold and diamond encrusted superbowl ring can NOT be sold and money obtained since the trophy contains no precious metals or precious jewels. While Melvin or any competitor would be honored to win the Sandow...its only value is in recognition and I don't think anyone would risk their life for recognition if they knew in advance that the path to that recognition is assured death or permanent health issues. I believe that Melvin wants to try and win without going to the extremes that many have gone to in order to win a trophy...I don't blame him IF this is his mindset.

So far as the posters on this board go...it is funny how they condemn everyone that uses pharmaceuticals to get BIG, but then just as quickly condemns them if they don't use enough to get BIG or CUT...go figure...

I guess the value that some of my trophies have for me is that they are a symbol of a time in my life where I had a passion for an endeavor that made me wake up each morning with a clear cut purpose.  What makes life exciting is to have a challenge. It may seem silly now, looking back at all the effort spent just to stand on stage, oiled up and being compared with other guys for a local show and to ultimately win a "Worthless Trophy." But there was value in the discipline one learns when doing something like preparing for a show, that can be transferred to other goals and projects in life.

What does that mean?

And I agree with Chem's statement...I loom at my trophies and think of my experiences I had.

They are kept at my parent's home....my father likes to polish them and think back to all the shows he went to to see me compete.

One can assume that after a few years of "been there, done that", the trophies lose a bit of their worth, but then again, for some they still may have some nostalgic value.

Very true...the first that you win are always a major triumph...then you just want to measure against yourself....and only a very small 'trophy' is needed.

Zane said it best whjen he won the Mr. Universe in Belgium...his trophy was 250 pounds....metaphor for his ego outstripping his actual endeavor (I think he said he only took the top piece from the trophy home with him).....He called it "Muscle as emotional armor..."
