Head of CIA's OBL: Michael Scheuer: Candidates Are Clueless
-
Interesting
-
I'm watching/listening this right now. It's an hour long. Very interesting! first 10 minutes is an introduction.
Conversations With History - Michael Scheuer
U.S. Foreign Policy and the Terrorist Threat
Michael Scheuer, former Chief of the CIA bin Laden unit
Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Michael Scheuer, a 20 year veteran of the CIA, who in the 1990's headed the search for Osama Bin Laden and the rendition program to imprison jihadists. Scheuer discusses the career of Osama bin Laden, the origins of the rendition program, and the failure of the US foreign policy elite to understand the challenges posed by jihadist terrorism.
Recorded March 12, 2008

May 1998: a plan to capture bin Laden at his compound south of Kandahar, canceled at the last minute (see May 29, 1998).
September 1998: a capture opportunity north of Kandahar, presumably by Afghan tribals working for the CIA (see September-October 1998).
December 1998: canceled US missile strike on the governor’s palace in Kandahar (see December 18-20, 1998).
February 1999: Military attack opportunity on governor’s residence in Herat (see February 1999).
February 1999: Multiple military attack opportunities at a hunting camp near Kandahar attended by United Arab Emirates royals (see February 11, 1999).
May 1999: Military attack opportunities on five consecutive nights in Kandahar (see May 1999).
August 1998, there is one failed attempt to kill bin Laden.(see August 20, 1998) [Atlantic Monthly, 12/2004; Scheuer, 2008, pp. 284]

He's absolutely correct, but he's not saying anything new. I've been seeing this same guy giving this same basic message for years now. I remember him on 60 Minutes probably two plus years ago telling us what an idiot Bush was regarding his Bin Laden strategy. Clinton blew it too, but you have to remember what America was like in the 90's. Except for those of us like myself who were foreign policy and current events junkies, most Americans did not know who Bin Laden was. When Clinton launched the strike against him in the Sudan that failed, people accused him of "wagging the dog", ie., using a military attack to take the focus off the moronic Monica Lewinsky scandal that was taking up much of his focus instead of more important matters. Had he continued to launch strikes at a terrorist most Americans didn't know much about or care about prior to 9-11, Clinton would have continued to have been accused of trying to divert attention away from Ken Starr and his sex scandal witch hunt.

blame NeoCons for making a big deal out of it.

I seriously cant figure this out......all the 9/11 questions, all the bin laden escapes, the dollar being forced to dump........WTF is going on???
-
Please HH6 or BB tell us this guy doesnt know what he's talking about. Please inform us of whats really going on in Iraq because the head of the Bin Laden unit seems to be talking the same jibberish we keep trying to drill into your heads.
-
Funny..I don't disagree with anything that guy said..not a word. Well ok, maybe the Israel thing..they're in the way as well, from allowing these nutbags to kill each other.
He mentioned nothing about Iraq. he said oil. I wish we could pull out of the Gulf and let them all strarve to death. U idiots talk about pulling out of Iraq, how we're loosing, how P4's strategy isn't working. All crap u guys have zero clue about, zero militray experience to draw from. This guy is talking about stuff we can't do a whole lot about. I don't know know how many times I've posted how the continued support of SA is a bad idea...I wonder where I got that from..maybe from his book which i own. That book came out in 04 anyway. Things on the ground have changed.
-
It is pretty amazing how people want to pull out of Iraq, then some of the quacks find out that Clinton was fighting and funding a war against terrorism in the middle east the whole time while in office against the same guys were now killing.
peace in the middle east is right around the corner ::)
if you believe that, then you must think the koran teaches love

He said Americans are not wanted in the region at all, period. He said pulling out of the area would take the heat off of America which isnt who these people have a beef with in the firt place if we only left.
Now your gonna tell us that you know more about the situation than the head of CIA Bin Laden unit and that interview wasnt in 04 it was more recent so Im sure he has a grasp oof what is going on, just like you do. ::) You live on a on another planet. Logic keeps escaping you.

It took place in March 2008; his most recent book came out towards the end of 2007 I believe.

Lets review my post for those who don't speak enguish or english...I agree with the guy. His book came out in 2004. Much of what he said in this interview can be tied to that book. I mentioned that idiots like u have no grasp of whats going on..U have no military background to draw from...u get ur info from this and then become a COIN expert. ::) Wrong..ur an idiot.
-
Well, although I hate to be on the side of HH6 on this one, I must say that getting out of the region will not stop terrorism (if that is indeed the goal). Look at Spain and what happened in Madrid in 2004. The reaction, politicaly, was: PP party voted out and the PS party voted in. Needless to say that the PS party ran their entire campaign on getting out of Iraq, which won them the presidency. Zapatero was voted in and one of the first things he did was to get the troops out.
Did this stop terrorism? At face value, yes. Are muslims in Spain still planning terrorist acts against Spaniards. You betcha! Hence getting out of the area will not stop terrorism, at least in the short run. Getting the fuck out is necesary so that these jihadi motherfuckers can chop heads off in their own countries and sew their women's labia majora if they want to (you know, the good work of allah).
My advice is that if they come here after we get out, a warning will be given to Afganis, Egiptians and all these societies that harbor these idiotic hateful feelings toward non-muslims. If they do not fight these people internally... let's just say that the next shock-n-awe will include the use of nukes... on a large scale.
-
Well I guess i have to agree with slapper..hell is freezing over. The last bit u mnetioned about nukes etc. There is a rumor or story etc going around since the Wall fell that we have made it clear to those in the Middle East that should one of their little nutbags get nukes and hit one of our cities...our response will be large...nuclear and won't discriminate. A new version of MAD.
-
yeah right if that were to happen Obama would try to talk to them (if he were to be in office) ::)
hey guys quit shootin knukes, mmm k
-
Can anyone give me a comparison figure - the amount of Americans dead in attacks - Cole, 9/11 etc vs the amount of foreign nationals killed by Americans please?
-
wtf? how can you compare another life to....nevermind
-
Its a rational question to any rational person.
I have seen pics [on here] of dead kids etc. I am quite sure no one, but real creeps, think babies deserve to die.
I am asking for an informed person to tell the the numbers. I go to 10 sites, I get 10 different numbers, so am interested in anothers perspective.

I think the reason you might be getting different numbers is there probably isn’t a reliable number out there, particularly if you're talking about civilians killed in the Iraq war. Insurgents are the ones blowing up women and children.

insurgents are fucking up everythings, the truth is, no matter what happens the middle east will be a hell hole, as soon as the US leaves it will pop off, its just tit for tat, and its a shame.

You're probably right. Those folks will probably always be fighting with each other.

you know what, i don't want to say I'm a expert but I'm from a Lebanese background, but the middle east is cursed, it has hatred that has enough fuel to burn for another 1000 years, it wont stop, so when i say "Get the troops out of Iraq" I'm saying it cause i dont want 18 yr old kids dying for some shit thats not going to stop..I'm glad he volunteered to serve his country, but to die in Iraq is not the way a soldier should die, no disrespect to the 4000 that have died, and may god bless each one of them, whether troops are there or not, it wont get better.

You said you agree with everything he said but then you say you disagree on the Isreal issue and you disagree on pulling out of the region which are his main points for why we are having trouble "winning this war".
Sorry, I'll take his word over yours any day of the week.

I am not splitting hairs. You claimed it was old stuff and the book that is being referenced came out this year; you were the one splitting hairs. You essentially claim the man is talking out of his arse, which is ludicrous and thus far you have only given the 'soldier following orders' bit in your defence of current policies. SS soldiers did much the same thing during the Nuremburg trials. You continue to believe the American Empire can go on forever; I ask myself why you think that is the case?
-
I never said he was taliking out his ass..please show me my quote where I say that. His info and themes from that FOX interview can be found in his 2004 book. After which I stated things on the ground in Iraq have gotten better. The central argument of leaving the Middle East, as stated by this guy, is still valid, getting off oil, is still valid, regardless of events in Iraq. My argument on iraq is u cannot leave until we create a stable government that can defend itself, and can maintain internal security. US Soldiers are not committing war crimes, we're not SS troops. Dragging out Nuremberg is ridiculous. I saids I don't make policy as in, it was not my choice to invade, however I could care less about invading or not invading, Bush said go, so we went. In hindsight it was a poorly thoughtout operation after the initial invasion.

His argument is that THAT is not possible; listen to the man.

1st a CIA director that thinks something is impossible....I'm glad he no longer works for our country.
2nd he acknowledges that, islam is a threat, but HH6 is right you can't leave the place. It may not be able to be done in a way that everyone would agree on, but it can be done.

It also strikes me as odd that folks here blame the CIA for everything that is evil in the world and then cherry pick information that supports their pre-made Lib conclusions. The CIA is very political and has an agenda. They have been wrong on alot of major issues...they have never predicted correctly the development of any nuclear program by our enemies. U guys can't have it both ways...either the CIA is sick and twisted and evil, or full of idiots.

HH6, chances are they are both. ;D j/k. They are what they are, a necessary evil that makes mistakes.
-
True....but u either get the big bad CIA threads or the CIA are idiots. But when one of them decides to write a book that suppports a Leftist point, even though this guy is not even remotely a Lib, they jump all over it here. I read his book, he points out many mistakes but says we've not done enough to kill the bad guys. He'd prefer the old fasion CIA way of doing things, which the Libs abhore.

You constantly throw around this word liberalism (I can only assume in its tainted American form); what exactly do you mean by that? Be specific...

Ironically, the neoconservative movement of the republicans - borrowing nearly a trillion a year to reconstruct and protect another country (nationbuilding!) is a majorly liberal thing.
There's a lot of liberalism sprinkled in the neocons. Which is so funny when they call each other libs. Joe local, you support borrowing $1 tril a year to help some lazy fvcking iraqis with oil to sell. You're a lib, dude!

Yeah let's borrow 1 trillion to help Iraqis, but not our own people. And then not drill for oil in the USA. Monster sense.

they blame the dems - with zero voting power for 6 years - for stopping this.
Dems/libs/granolas couldn't stop the wars, the tax cuts, the pat act...
but somehow, without any legislation, managed to stifle bush's desire to use our own oil.
that's a load of shit right there.
