Title: New Polls show Obama up by 6 points now
Post by: MattT on July 25, 2008, 05:19:19 PM
After new polling he's gained 3 more points in 1 day since his big Berlin speech.  As i predicted his lead will grow in the coming weeks.  Also now McCain agrees with Obamas 16 week withdrawal from Iraq ::)

LOL.....what polls are you looking at? Even the lib ABC pole has McCain closing in FAST.

BTW, did you hear Obama say in a speech "I've visited 57 states with 1 to go" or " I predict when I'm President for the next 10 years" "Israel supports Israel".

and there's plenty more.

Whats funny is when McCain makes mistakes it's old age and the media makes an issue of it, but when Obama says stupid crap no one says a word. Epic liberal media bias!!

Thats ok though, he a "constitutional scholar" LOL!

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the reputed "Constitutional scholar," just today said on CBS's Face the Nation that he went to Iraq to talk to important leader that he expects to be "dealing with over the next eight to 10 years." So, does this "Constitutional scholar" not realize that there is this little thing called the 22nd Amendment that holds a president to only two, four year terms? Um, that would be a grand total of only 8 years, Barack, not 8 to 10. Of course, the big question is, will we see this idiot gaffe race through the MSM as it would if a Republican had said it?

At the very least ABC's Jake Tapper, one of the best political reporters in the biz, sure noticed. Tapper has a blog entry on his "Political Punch" blog all about it with an amusing side note about time travel added in just for fun.

" I predict when I'm President for the next 10 years" "Israel supports Israel".

...Oh, sorry. I thought you were misquoting him, when in fact you were actually deliberately misquoting him.

I don't know why, but I've watched and re-watched that video, and each time I hear him say "...who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to ten years".

I can't hear the "as president" bit... and I certainly can't hear the "I predict when I'm President for the next 10 years" bit.

Wouldn't he be dealing with all three heads of state mentioned (Kharzi, Malachi, Sarkozy) for the next ten years even if he just remained a senator? Or do American term limits and election timetables apply to Afghanistan, Iraq and France too?

Obama has had some bad gaffes but you're right, they don't get much coverage.  Everyone who is publicly speaking every day is going to have a lot of screw ups but Obama has some that approach the Bush level.

Here are a few choice blunders I found (there are a lot!):

"Well let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel's."

"Israel is an ally of ours. It is the most important ally we have in the region, and there is no doubt that we would act forcefully and appropriately on any attack against Iran nuclear or otherwise."

"If I talked to Iran, I'm going to tell them, 'You should develop a nuclear weapon. It's going to set off an arms race in the Middle East. You have to stop funding terrorist activities.' "

"Our troops fight and die in 20-degree heat to give Iraq's leaders the space to agree, but they aren't filling that space."

"I would immediately call the president of Mexico, the president of Canada to try to amend NAFTA.. "

"My father served in World War II, and when he came home, he got the services that he needed."  [Completely false]

"I had an uncle who was one of the -- who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps."     [Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviets!]

"On this Memorial as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes, and I see many of them in the audience here today."   [he sees dead people???]

...all these claims of Obama blunders and gaffes only surfaced after McCain started having a few "senior moments" (confusing Shiahs and Sunnis etc).

There isn't any substance to any of them... like we've already seen in this thread, at best the gaffes are shoddy paraphrasing by Republicans with poor comprehension of the English language (which seems to be all of them).

There is no "liberal media" conspiracy here... you rednecks just have a poor language skills. Besides, the vast majority of American media is distinctly right-leaning (Rupert Murdoch owns most of it).

With phrasing like that I wouldn't make a habit of condemning the language skills of others  ;D

The point (which obviously went way over your head) is that he makes a number of just plain stupid statements but you rarely hear them reported by the mainstream media.  Considering that Dan Quayle's political career was basically ended because he misspelled "potato", I'd say these are valid gaffes to note.

As far as the American media being right leaning, you have no clue what you are talking about.

Good catch, Tesla... I used to work as a proof-reader so an extraneous "a" is pretty dumb of me.

The point I was making with regard to these supposed gaffes is that they never match what the anti-Obama camp report. Where is the video to support any of these gaffes by Obama? It's all a game of Chinese whispers... even in this thread the phrase "...who I expect to be dealing with for the next 8-10 years" has been deliberately mis-reported as "I predict when I'm president for the next 8-10 years..."

Isn't that a little prejudicial...?

I have to disagree with your opinion of American media... it is distinctly right wing.

FOX News can't even be shown here in Europe because it is classified as propaganda, and that represents (panders to) at least a third of the American news audience. Add to this the monopolies so prevalent in American media (Rupert Murdoch and a couple of his drinking buddies decide the news for the vast majority of Americans) and there's no wonder Americans are so enamored of and indoctrinated with these patently false capitalist ideologies.

For the record: Ralph Nader is centrist by world standards... Albert Einstein is/was left wing.

I love how most of the people offering strong opinions on this are not Americans. These people have no vote in an American election because it's NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS.  You don't see me telling the Canadians or Brits who their Prime Ministers should be, or the French who their President should be, do you?  ::)

The leader of one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world matters to all of us.  It is absolutely our business.  If you guys go to war, it is likely that my country will(excluding Iraq, Chretien  surprised us all with that).   Granted I don't care who is the leader of Albania, the difference is they don't have military bases over the world, intelligence agents placed in almost every country ect.

You're the guy throwing around names like "redneck".  I really don't care where American media stands with respect to European standards.  We have freedom of the press and don't have Big Brother telling us what we news is and isn't fit to watch.  Your governments allow al Jazeera but you won't allow Fox news, that's too funny.

For Obama's many gaffes just search youtube for "Obama's gaffes" or something similar.  There are lots of videos.  Here's one:

As far as "patently false capitalist ideologies", well, capitalism isn't perfect but it's the best you're going to get and most Americans understand this.

What America doesn't realize is that the centre is quite a bit left of where they think it is... the American media is so heavily controlled by big corporations that most Americans don't even question what they have been told to believe:

-Americans believe in the free market, but don't seem to comprehend that monopolies and cartels have full control of that supposedly "free" market.

-Americans are against "socialised medicine"... yet are unaware of the fact that every country in the world with a better healthcare system than the US (all 35 of them) use it.

-Americans don't believe in proper welfare systems because they term them "handouts"... yet their society's growing wealth disparity has done nothing to improve the lot of the "average" American, instead it has severely destabilized their country (New Orleans, Detroit... just another ten cities before total collapse).

Ask yourself, where in the world would I most want to live if I was disadvantaged: homeless, a widow with young children or severely disabled... that is the measure of a society's quality, not how it treats billionaires.

Ask yourself, where in the world would I most want to live if I was disadvantaged: homeless, a widow with young children or severely disabled... that is the measure of a society's quality, not how it treats billionaires.

I'd want to live in the USA.

There is no other place on earth where everybody is cared for, ultimately

Down the street from my girlfriend's house, two beautiful houses were just built for widows with kids by Habitat for humanity.

These are FREE houses that they get.

I have no prob lem with that.

Sometimes, people suffer from incidences beyond there abilities to rise

And, there are more of these houses for disadvantaged in this little town of Wallingford, CT.

Free houses.

I paid for mine...mortagag paid off through businesses I started myself.

When I got out of school, I crushed my leg and developed severe nerve disorder. I lived in the YMCA in Chicago for n6 months.

Ultyimately, I made myself a success ON MY OWN.

So:

Two examplaes here of American excellence.

One: Habitat for Humainty...give poor, disadvcantaged new houses.

Two: Man gets struck down, pulls HIMSERLF up on his ownb as the American system allows him to, and succeeds beyond his wildest imagination.

I do this without Fox News, or signing my name in the third person, goofy.

This is a serious question... can you answer it without dismissal; evasion or cliched catchphrases?

Wow, Moosejay... two whole examples...

I suppose all those UN reports decrying the US's deplorable: homelessness rate; infant mortality; child mortality; literacy; healthcare system; public services; education standards; poverty rate; rich/poor disparity; job benefits; pensions; economic opportunity; welfare systems etc. etc.... are all just a load of baloney.

By the way, dismissing a generalized accusation applied to an entire nation/economy by means of two specific  individual instances is highly evasive and intellectually dishonest.

So I guess when I asked:
This is a serious question... can you answer it without dismissal; evasion or cliched catchphrases?
...I guess I got my answer: No, you can't.

Pity you didn't add a "Support our troops!" to give the full diabolical trio.

You realize the irony of telling people that you 'pulled yourself up' all by yourself why admitting that you lived at the YMCA?  You realize that the YMCA was created to help people 'down on their luck' AND receives public tax money?

You really are a tool...

Pretty humorous for a so-called (Self professed in your case) intellectual to look at the fucking UN as a legitimate organization.

It is not

By the way, dismissing a generalized accusation applied to an entire nation/economy by means of two specific  individual instances is highly evasive and intellectually dishonest.

There are plenty of 'trickle down' examples that would fall under either category. I am here for fun, not writing a book. And I type with one hand, dude.

You are incapable of seeing anything other than in your own eyes. Oh, and you don't live here

If you'd been on GetBig a little longer Moosejay, you'd know that my full name and picture have been published in several American newspapers and I've been interviewed on NPR.

Instead of attacking my (perceived) anonymity, why can't you address the issues being debated without resorting to your tired routine of:
-evade the question
-dismiss the validity of the question
-answer the question you wish had been asked not the actual question
-attack the questioner
...you have done all of these in this thread, and every other thread you pollute with your "contributions".

But then again, perhaps all the economic facts and statistics are wrong... perhaps the UN is a not a legitimate organization whose 192 member nations top academics turn out faulty reports only questioned by "clever" people such as yourself... not by the world media... then again, perhaps I'm totally wrong.

So why can't someone such as yourself Moosejay explain this PROPERLY without making a fool of yourself and exposing your own stupidity.

I love how you Euros are so smug and self righteous about how moral your societies allegedly are.  Really, you guys should feel free to turn your countries into havens for those you deem to be "disadvantaged".  Open the floodgates to angry Muslims and sub-Saharan Africans who will sap your beloved social welfare systems.

In America we give people economic freedom.  This allows those among us with a lot of drive and ambition the potential to amass a lot of wealth.  That doesn't mean that people who can't or won't pull their own weight are thrown overboard.  America is actually a very generous society, with the average American donating a lot more money than the average European.

"Americans give twice as much as the next most charitable country, according to a November 2006 comparison done by the Charities Aid Foundation. In philanthropic giving as a percentage of gross domestic product, the U.S. ranked first at 1.7%. No. 2 Britain gave 0.73%, while France, with a 0.14% rate, trailed such countries as South Africa, Singapore, Turkey and Germany."     http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-06-25-charitable_N.htm (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-06-25-charitable_N.htm)

Another thing to take into consideration is that America in effect heavily subsidizes the defense of Europe with our military presence.  So your governments can use some of the money that otherwise would have been allocated for defense and spend it on the social programs you like so much.  This is not going to last forever and when we stop subsidizing your defense your nations' funding priorities are going to change dramatically.

Tesla,

Those figures are wrong...

Ireland gives more money to foreign aid through our government (as a percentage of GDP and on a per capita basis) than any other country in the world... private giving by Irish people is also among the highest (if not the highest in the world) it's a side effect of having suffered economic privation only 20 years ago; serious poverty for the preceding century and a major famine only 150 years ago.

Those figures you quoted are misleading... "philanthropic giving" would have to include donations to evangelical mega-churches and social programs (programs that are government funded in Europe) for those rankings to hold true.

So an American giving a hundred bucks to Rev Ted Haggard's church or Katrina relief isn't really comparable to a European giving a hundred bucks to famine relief in Darfur.

Do a little more research on this Tesla and you'll see what I'm talking about... good point on the invasion of Africans and disgruntled Muslims though.

...eh, FOX News? The NRA (who pay for tv ads)? A shitload of right-wing think-tanks who put out bullshit reports whenever Carl Rove asks them to?

What America doesn't realize is that the centre is quite a bit left of where they think it is... the American media is so heavily controlled by big corporations that most Americans don't even question what they have been told to believe:

-Americans believe in the free market, but don't seem to comprehend that monopolies and cartels have full control of that supposedly "free" market.

-Americans are against "socialised medicine"... yet are unaware of the fact that every country in the world with a better healthcare system than the US (all 35 of them) use it.

-Americans don't believe in proper welfare systems because they term them "handouts"... yet their society's growing wealth disparity has done nothing to improve the lot of the "average" American, instead it has severely destabilized their country (New Orleans, Detroit... just another ten cities before total collapse).

...this is not the product of a "liberal" media.

Because he's black. The dude seriously has nothing to offer. He been in the senate for 2 years with little or no accomplishments, he even failed as a leader in his own district in Illinois.

He's a media creation. He speaks well, he's fairly easy too look at on TV, he dresses well, etc, etc. But compared to others in congress and politics in general, he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground and that includes Hillary Clinton and to be honest, I'd MUCH rather see her in than this facade.

...poor reading comprehension dude.

Again, (yawn) Ireland doesn't have a standing army, we can't go to war with anyone (nor would we)... we spend the money you spend losing wars (Vietnam anyone?) on our economy and citizens... that's how a proper country is run... that's how countries much poorer than the US live better than the US.

When we Irish want to conquer a country we simply invade with efficiency (immigration)... that's how we usurped most of the US; Canada; Britain and Australia... that's why Russian KGB agents used to ask for (forged) Irish passports, the Irish are welcome everywhere in the world.

Are Americans?

He he didn't say he would be president for the next 8 - 10yrs.
He said these were people and countries he'd be dealing with over the next 8 to 10 yrs.

What if anything that video showed is that obama doesn't suffer from ther myopia that has plagued this current administration. it shows he understands policies and plans are to be implemented for the long haul, ...not thrown together with bubble gunm and rubber bands to be in place for 2 months at a time.

That's what a plan is, and that's what long term vision is.
Bush had none, ...that's why after 8 yrs America is in the mess it's in.
Obama has always thought long term. He indicated that when he voted against the war predicting it would lead to an occupation of indeterminate length. He was right, ...'cause he thinks long term. that's the kind of leadership you need in the whitehouse, ...not someone whose grateful he managed to open his eyes the next day. I can just see Cindy right now... everymorning she probably holds a mirror under his nose to see if it fogs.  ::)
