Title: Walked away from Powerlifting
Post by: bigbadwolfe on July 28, 2008, 06:58:03 PM
Hey Guys,

I have officially walked away from competitive benching and focusing 110% on getting my fatass in shape. I've said before I was gonna drop weight but when my bench dropped I'd quit and start eating like shit again to gain back weight.

Well this time I have totally eliminated the bench from the program and have leaned more towards a BB style training. Including Abs and Cardio!!! Hahaha give me a year I'll have abs and I might even buy me some posing trunks. Uhhh Yeah nevermind that wont happen!!!!

I've gotten away from the BIGGER and STRONGER mindset and will be focusing on the LEANER and FITTER mindset. A few health problems and my father in law having a massive heart attack at 53 made me deadset on this.

I am now 333 pounds still way down from the start at 420 pounds 2 yrs ago. But I will make it to 240 one way or another!!!

I did the same thing when my daughter was born.  After being 280 for 10 years, I knew it was time for a change (I am 5'9").  All those years of grinding and a list of injuries a mile long, I knew I couldn't keep it up.

I am now around 235 and I feel fantastic.  Of course, 500 on the bench would crush me now, but I could give two shits less. Longevity is your friend.

I've just made alot of cuts in the junkfood department. I have ate extremely clean for the last 2 yrs getting my BW all the way down to 318 from 420. But like I said when my weight would get down under 320-330 my bench would drop and I'd start eating crap to get my weight back up.

So I have cleaned it way up and have implemented 1/2 hr cardio on my weight training days and walking 2.1 miles on my off days. I'm eating about 12 pounds of Chicken a week plus 300 grams of protein drinks per day. I'm still sponsored by At Large Nutrition and Chris is helping me out alot with this. He knows my body as well as I do.

Stay away from all of that ASPARTAME /ARTIFICIAL sweetener crap it is dangerous. THe negetive side effects of that stuff is a mile long... just use less regular sugar to sweeten things. Here is a link to some of the side effects of that stuff

http://dorway.com/dorwblog/

Look at the links on the left side of the page and go through them to learn about what this product is and its effects on the body. I am amazed it is allowed to be sold/consumed...

When I'm dieting, I generally leave drinks and shakes out of the rotation.  Nothing like calorie debt to make you welcome every last bit of solid food, but if you're making progress then don't change a thing.

I just finally stopped with that crap after 15 yrs.  I'm talking three packs of Sweet n' Low in 2 large coffees a day (6 all day) for 365 days a year for approx. 5 years, then 4 packs of Equal in each large coffee (8 all day) because I thought it tasted better for another 10 years, up until a few months ago and my chiropractor told me STOP, IMMEDIATELY.

TAKING MEDICAL ADVICE FROM A CHIROPRACTOR  ???

i'm pretty sure you have to eat half your body weight in aspartame before anything happens. if you're drinking that much diet soda, the side effects of the sweetener are probably the last of your worries.

Question for you about this interview thas on the net - 25. There are fat people in schools that get picked on. Are there any message that you would like to tell the heavy kids that get picked on and the people who pick on them?

Yeah to all those super jocks that think they are the stuff in school, watch who you push around because you never know they may be the next Mike Wolfe or Gene Rychlak. As far as I'm concerned though, those guys did me a favor. If not for them I probably would have never picked up a weight and got this serious about it. I see them now and lots of them are out of shape, worthless and didn't amount to anything in life. They are a cool and stuff to me now. I just laugh at them and go on, but in the back of my head I know what I could do if I wanted to. So watch out who you push around cause you never know for sure where life is going to take that fat nerdy kid who sucks at sports in gym class.

Smart move. Strength is nothing when you don't know how to apply it. Try some jiu-jitsu and you'll know what I'm talking about.

i'd say him benching 500 pounds for 10 and 405 for 18-19 already makes him a stud.

Will be tough

Do yourself a favor....protect your joints & don't do any high impact cardio until you get some weight off.

Dude - well done. At the right time, you do need to give up a sport 0 it can be really tough to do though.

I love powerlifting. When your life and mates etc revolve around training, hitting new PBs and competing, it can be really tough to do.

What were your best lifts? And what kind of exercise are you doing now?

I'm a bit late here on page 4, but there's a big difference between being a fat ass and being a beast. You, sir, are a beast!

After you shed all your adipose I'm sure there are sheaths of muscle underneath. There are different sorts of muscle fibers and it's good to work in both high and low rep ranges. When working with heavy ass weights in the low rep range, it seems to create that hard, grainy and matured look... but too many power lifters are too fat to reveal it. I'm sure that when you change your training, you'll be seeing the best of both worlds.

Be sure to keep us updated on your progress. Power lifting and being such a huge weight isn't the most conducive thing for your health. Bodybuilding isn't the best thing in the world either, but you will probably feel a lot more healthy and younger once the ball rolls along a little more. Take care of yourself, man! Can't wait to see what you look like 6 months or a year down the road. 8)

Can't be good to be that heavy regardless of how strong you are.

If there's a single benefit to being hu-fucking-mongous, it's the calves you grow. I work in an office environment and on casual days when people are wearing shorts and whatnot, so many fat sloths walk around with their diamond 20" calves. Even when some of these slobs diet down that's one of the muscles that never seems to atrophy. I've seen fat people turn skinny fat and end up with 13" upper arms but with calves that rival some of the best pros out there.

Yeah this is one of the hardest things for me to do. I've been lifting in a powerlifting type enviroment since '94 competing from 95-98. Took a break came back in 03 went to Westside Barbell in 04 been there since. That is the hard part for me is seperating myself from my training partners for the last 4 yrs. To get where I need to be I need to be out of the enviroment that got me here. Not saying Westside made me unhealthy but the Bigger is better mindset I have every time I train there needs tobe changed.

My best in gym lifts are 905 in a shirt and 650 raw. My best contest lifts are 859.875 in a shirt at the 07 Arnold took 2nd place. And 600 raw at the New England Record breakers at UMass 2 yrs ago. I should of had 650 there but just could not lock it out.

My training went from total power to a total Bodybuilder workout. I got a 5 day split training Chest on day 1, Legs on Day 2, Back on day 3,  Arms on Day 4, and Shoulders on Day 5. I do abs 3 times per week now and also hit 20 minutes on theTreadmill on training days and walk 2.1 miles and uphill sprints on my off days.

That is it plus all the changes to my diet.

First, if you saw Mike in person you would be absolutely impressed by him.   His arms are huge and he carries his weight very well.  To give you an idea, my friend and employee Cornelius met Mike at the Arnold last year.  Corn does not train.  He was totally impressed with Mike and in no way felt he was sloppy, just HUGE.

Now, Mike is going to lose the weight over time, not overnight, thus loose skin will not be an issue.

I am 100% behind Mike and am excited to see what we can create with this.  I think Mike will look spectacular in the 270 lbs range and can still be strong as an ox.
