Awsome.
Back in 1977, I sat in the restaurant of the Howard Johnson hotel with Rick Wayne and Danny Padilla and Rick described this contest. He said that during one point of the pose-down Sergio turned to Arnold and did a most muscular (sort of like here in your face you 23 year old kid… yes Arnold was 23) and Arnold jaw dropped. Although Arnold won I remember him coming out in the magazines and saying “I’m so pissed off that I could win not being in my best shape. After seeing this clip I think I’d give the nod to Arnold. Sergio looks awesome but doesn’t hold his poses properly or long enough and his conditioning could have been better. Both are awesome though.

I take what Rick Wayne says with a grain of salt. He tends to embellish things.

Agreed... an understatement actually.
-
great stuff,i love those old clips, thanks bro
-
Arnold looks better. Sergio couldn't pose for shit.
-
sergio have a better physique but arnold was a better champion
-
What's the more motivating song - You're the Best or Eye of the Tiger?
-
Sergio looked awesome and that tiny waist just could not be beat. But Arnold had the height advantage and while they were equally big Arnold was more cut.
-
Arnold
Thicker back
Better posing
Better chest
Better shaped biceps
Better conditioning although not 100%
took command of the stage
Sergio
Better front lat spread
Wider back
Better legs including better sweep
Smaller waist
Smaller joints giving the muscle groups a more dramatic "wow" factor.
Add to the list:
-
Both were a little smooth, neither were holding poses as well as they could've.
Could've been the lighting as well, and too much oil.
For the next years after that show, Schwarzie learned the lesson to expect Sergio and was always tanned and in top shape, unlike 72.
-
Sergio's posing sucked as usual and his conditioning although better than usual wasn't on par with Arnold , judging on that video and all the pics I seen I don't get how people can say Sergio was the clear cut winner because he doesn't look it , close sure , Sergio that much better I don't think so
-

lmfao top shape Sergio looks like he's guest posing , Arnold looks like a finished product
Sergio's posing sucked as did his conditioning , just because he has a better structure as base doesn't mean he should win the whole contest
-

Massive Arnold ball-wash, as per usual. He was not in top shape, said so and it's clear learned the lesson the next two years in fact it's pretty clear that it was Sergio that forced him in to his best shape.
Arnold's posing needed work there as well, plus his mid-section was loose. Thighs clearly weak there, glaring actually. Sometimes that thigh problem isn't obvious from various angles in pics.

Why would Arnold need to be ion top shape if Sergio wasn't competing? you're full of shit as usual
Arnold's posing may have needed work but it was still leaps & bounds better than Sergios , lmfao his midsection was lose , stop watching with biased eyes for once , Sergio looked offseason , his posing was horrible especially the little belly wiggles ( WTF )
So Sergio should beat Arnold because he has fuller albeit softer quads? great logic ::) again I'm not saying either were the clear cut winner , it could have gone either way but these people who claim Sergio was so much better he was robbed are delusional

you're picking out shit i can't even see lol

Of course he is , he has to make shit up to validate his point of view
-
Arnold looks way better than Sergio there. All I could see on Sergio was a lot of width and not much else - flat biceps, high lats and very little thickness - maybe it was just the poor quality filming but even so.
-
I personaly like sergios physic more.
But I would have gave a vote to Arnold if i was a judge.
-
This picture clearly demonstrates the discrepancy between conditioning between the two
Arnold shows much clearer and defined separation in the biceps , triceps , traps , infranspinatus , teres , and lats and all three head of the deltoids , neither have any detail or development of the leg biceps and Arnold's calves are again showing better detail
This coupled with posing is exactly why Arnold won , Sergio looks better from an aesthetics stand point because he has a better structure , smaller joints , rounder bellies , etc but he's still an unfinished product , like Paul Dillett his posing & presentation were terrible , like Flex Wheeler he relied to much on his genetics to pull him out of trouble and that may have worked with , Poole and Sipes but not with Arnold

In 72 Arold would have been 25 years old.

i agree, Sergio's body just looked better but Arnold was a better showman.
-
Maybe if Sergio tried dieting for a contest for once he wouldnt have been so big and full looking.
I remember pics of a young Arnold before he learned about dieting and cuts being better than pure size, and he lookin enormous but he wasnt cut, which is why Zane beat him.
End of the day if any bodybuilder came in with no abs in a contest they would lose no matter how big they are

In an interview, Arnold was ragging on how neurotic bb's were with their diets and such.
He said, "Me? I would always go to the House Of Pies a week before a show, and have a whole pie."
As if he were inhuman compared to the rest.
Spin.

Sergio was not really confident, many pose were wrong, facial expressions ridiculous
Arnold routine was perfect and confident
Sergio condition was better, see femoral, Sergio have bigger legs triceps and lats than Arnold, but he wasnt a true champion as Arnold

Are you not the guy who got railroaded by thet 'B&A' character?

I stand corrected. Still a kid for the Olympia.
-
Sergio= 10
Arnold= 9

first of all guys, in those days, that was ripped. who looked better was already decided years ago, get over it.

I agree conditioning was obviously not on par with today or even in the late 70s however its clear Arnold has better conditioning than Sergio which is one of the factors he beat him.

You just have to love the way this IFBB shill keeps insisting the shows were actual competitions with 100% integrity.
The level of conditioning then was lower but Schwarzenegger wasn't in the condition he would be in just a year later or IMO had been previous to 72.
Both a little smooth, Sergio clearly better given his huge advantage in balance considering Schwarzenegger's extremely tiny thighs.

Your posts are always ignorant and biased , your comment Arnold made sure he was better conditioned in 73/74 because of Sergio is just plain stupid seeing Sergio wasn't in either contest , your comment both were a little smooth , again reeks of ignorance , Arnold was sharper before & since however in 1972 his conditioning is again clearly sharper than Sergios , bias refuses you to admit it
And Sergio's advantage in balance doesn't trump better conditioning and posing , and development look at the differences in back separation its night & day , Sergio does have better balance & structure , he has a better base he looked unfinished next to Arnold , and your cries of politics is a default excuse what happened when Sergio faced Bill Pearl in 1971 at an NABBA contest? he was soundly defeated whats your excuse now? you can't cry Uncle Joe was pulling the strings , face it your ebony hero wasn't nearly as great as he could have been and he was beatable , like many before him he thought his superior genetics would bail him out and he was in for big surprise
Sergio bitched about his places in 84/85 what does that tell you? more politics? see a pattern here? of course not you're stuck on stupid.

Man Franco looks bad there.

Man Franco looks bad there.
Come on Franco looks good with 15 inch arms, and he and Arnold can BOTH hit 315# for 12 perfect reps while weighing 160#-190#............... I see it everyday in the gym :D
-
franco had terrible genetics almost worse than Chris dickerson...
Arnold beat Sergio on mass ---sergio was dwarfed by Arnie when they were side by side or...
-
After seeing that vid their is no doubt in my mind Sergo should have won. Brunschwagger was a little shaper but Sergio looked like a cartoon when he hits a crab pose, the cuts across his inner pecs are in sane. When he hits the 3/4 rear shot with is right arm held high all you can see are arms. Gad dammmmm! those are some freaky arms! His forearms look like a bunch of knotted ropes, just insane!
-
Sergio= Dennis James of the 70's.
Got his ass handed to him every time by Arnold.
-
Do u actually believe everything u read???
I asked Zane about this story.
He said, "Yeah, I'd go with him sometimes."
I don't believe everything I read. No.

Agreed
Sergio kills Arnold on legs, though i do give it to Arnold he was close to Sergio but hardly a knockout punch, only the Weider blessing gave him the edge.
All hail Sergio the true champion,The only bodypart id give to Arnold would be incredible Bicep peak and shape just my humble opinion.

Arnold is clearly the winner in those photos. I mean it's one thing to see both guy's on stage by themselves doing their routines like in the video, but when you get a side by side comparison it's all over. Both guys look great but Arnold simply dwarfs Sergio, he also has better conditioning. It's close but Arnold gets the nod.

This is a prime example of how one has to see the contest than just look at pics. Looking at pics alone, I had Sergio beating Arnold (barely). See this clip--not even close...ARNOLD WAS THE WINNER!!!
