Title: Has anyone ever told you "america sucks"?
Post by: boonstack on August 27, 2008, 11:00:46 AM
I love when a group of college sophomores majoring in politics claim they "just know everything about why america is so 'screwed up" ::), and announce why we SHOULDNT do this or SHOULDNT do that, blind fools. I would love a typical american born person to try living in the countries they claim we should "stay out of".  ;) America is the BEST COUNTRY ON EARTH. This is a NON BIASED POINT OF VIEW. Unless you are in jail or dead, any person can do ANYTHING in this country they desire. Its just the facts. I can go to waffle house. I can instantly purchase 3 bibles and a 9mm in this country. Freedom is what everyone values. Anyone who disagrees has never had a taste.

Take a look at Saddams Crimes Against Humanity videos if you particularly feel we should not have went to iraq. 400,000 people killed. A handful of Americans. Im not "trading" on my fellow civilians.Im just talking about human beings in general. But, if what saddam did was happening in Kentucky right now, 800,000 people killed today. IM PRETTY SURE WE WOULD be concerned. But, since its "way over there in Iraq" we dont care about people. Thats their problem.

And im the farthest thing from a dumb hick who is the "America: love it or leave it" type.  ::)

You can love your country and still see the flaws in it, and work to change them.

Just as you wake up one day and realize you have poor calves.  You don't cover them with pants then brag to the world you have the best calves around.  No, you rip your pants off at the knee, and you walk around with your weakness exposed.  You let others know you admit your flaws, then you work your ass off to fix them!

This is a NON BIASED POINT OF VIEW.

Which countries have you lived in?

I'd say America is one of the best countries in the world. However, if America was a stock, I'd expect the value to collapse soon.

yes it has become a hype in europe to dislike the united states, it makes me sick becuase it are always the same tiny geeks who say this.

I find it kind of ironic that a country that advertises itself as land of the "free" restricts the traveling of its own citizens. Also, another VERY ironic point is that because America has the highest number of inmates in the world, it's in dead last position when it comes to population that's free, i.e. out of jail.

"free" is such a great word to brainwash people come election time

I would have done the exact same thing.

Same with how in England, they have muslim terrorist sympathisizers carrying signs that say "Your 911 is next".

I'd beat that masked marcher to a pulp with his own sign.  Yes, I'll take the assault charge.  You watch that jury let me off the hook.

I wouldn't say that the US could honestly think of itself as THE land of the free any longer though.  Basically all of modern Europe, Australia, NZ, and Canada are just as free and in some places even less restricted.  In fact, what I noticed most about the states when I got back was that it was becoming even more of a 'nanny state' than when I left.

Exactly, people from shitholes want to move to America, of course. How much immigration to U.S. is there from rich western countries? Not much...

America is going bust...personally in terms of financial gain and comfort I think Asia is going to take the cake, a place like Singapore for example. Here in Europe as well I see decadence, decay, laziness and self-contentment. There was a time when Europe was vibrant and brilliant and in many ways that time is over. There is no one place that is best; all places have their pitfalls as well as their perks, having lived on three different continents I feel confident in saying this.

The USA is home to GetBig, so I'm not seeing how "America Sucks" in even the most remote of ways. So responding to the statement would kind of be like trying to understand what your dog is saying when he's barking.

Just my observation, I don't see laziness and self-content increasing. Rather, life is getting tougher because of pressure from outside. Compared to most of the rest of the world, you're right of course.

HOLY SHIT!! how can u people TRY SO HARD to "justify" your stance that it just "sucks soooooo bad". You isolate only the people that "got it bad", but never mention how MANY PEOPLE love it. Try being a little bit more "narrow minded", as i see u are plenty capable of that.

America is the greatest country because it states in the constitution that 1) we have freedom of speech and 2) we're all allowed to have firearms and 3) freedom of and freedom from religion

these three reasons alone it makes America the greatest country in my opinion.

America does not suck, living in Canada I have vacationed and visited uncle sam quite often and have always had a great time, people are very friendly and down to earth, However the majority of politicians and elite that are running the country do suck and are running the country into the ground, America needs a new revolution to purge washington of the assholes that reside there right now and go back to being for the people.  However if things keep going as they are I feel that my fav vacation spot is in a heep of trouble, oh well I hope you guys pull out of the tailspin

I don't get it, people seem to think its like the cool thing to do, hating on america. Michael Moore sure doesn't help this as most dumbfuck teenagers seem to think that his movies are fact, which they for the most part are not.

These America haters act like everything the States does is wrong, and there isn't a single thing they do which is good. Even when you present these people with some of the MANY great things the states does, they brush it off and say America sucks cuz they're the biggest terrorists in the world.

Theres no way to convince a hippie otherwise...

Oh yeah  one more thing stop wasting money by fighting pointless wars and maybe put some of those billions spent blowing people to kingdom come back into infastructure and healthcare and you might start to turn things around, Bush should have remembered that nations are easy to defeat in war but religous ideolgy can never be conquered so you might as well leave the middle east alone and stop buying their oil  :)

Canada has larger reserves of oil and is much closer and plus you don't need to invade us to have it

People who say that haven't lived here and then somewhere else. American may not have public health and educational systems like that of Scandanavian countries, but it's still a better place to live in. I will explain why.

First, the standard of living, and I'm talking creature comforts, are far better in America than any other place. Goods are cheaper, and people are taxed less than in Europe or Japan. People can make as low as $500 a week and still live okay if they're smart with their money. You can't do that in Europe without relying on some sort of government welfare program.

Second, the healthcare system isn't that bad. No one suddenly dies because they couldn't get care. There are low cost medicaid programs that people can qualify for is they don't earn too much, or they can simply get low cost insurance.

Europe maybe be more of an ideal place, but it's far from that in reality. Most immigrants that go to European nations cannot even integrate, or get jobs, so they becomes welfare junkies. If the European Union is such a model example, then surely people would be able to assimilate? America is the world's ultimate merit based country and regardless of what idiot know it all kids say, a person can get a great return for what they put into the great machine that is America.

I've been to England and it was a very overpriced(even by NYC standards) place that allowed few creature comforts. My hotel room was fine, but upon visiting some friends I saw what kind of shitty and cramped places they lived in and these people earned relatively well mind you.

Which countries have you lived in?

I'd say America is one of the best countries in the world. However, if America was a stock, I'd expect the value to collapse soon.

UNBIASED?

LOL.

you need to google such things as the global health survey, standard of living survey, crime statistics and employment etc , compile them, then post.

you're in a for a HUGE shock to see how low the USA ranks when compared to many other countries which, by FACTUAL studies, shows that the US is FAR from the best country in the world to live.

In social and health alone it ranks 39. Behind even some 3rd world coutries. But dont worry, it ranks highly in crime per capita...

this is what is meant by Americans being insular and unaware of what happens elsewhere. You really do think you got it good..when you dont.

and yes, ive spent quite a bit of time in the US and everytime cant wait to get out of there.

I agree with you.

I won't evenb read the responses here.

My GF's neice needed a recommendation from me for college.

I wrote something about her "Being the best America has to offer..."

She wanted me to take "America" out, bc it was not "Politically correct"

Fucking college students.

I may not do it for her now.

Foreigners also paint the American people with the same brush as Bush's administration. This paints Americans as "dumb" and "uncultured", but the honest truth is that Americans are probably far better informed than Europeans. Having dealt with Euro tourists, I can tell you that most of them while formal lack respect for others. In the states most people don't give a fuck if you just do your thing, but it seems to be the opposite with Europeans. Europeans love playing towards good ideals, but fail in acting them out.

This is all subjective observation of course.

Stats do not tell the story, little man. America is a very large and diverse place, so those numbers go up and down with demopgrahic and area.

Funny how you say you couldn't wait to get out. So many people I've met would say the exact opposite and they have lived in both the European Union and the states. Just go to the westside of Manhattan and you'll find tons of brit transplants who moved to the states because it's a place where a dream can become reality granted you work hard. A baller in Europe lives as well as some upper middleclass American. Should tell you a lot right there.

They will be just like me

Plain fact

Can't be done ANYWHERE else

yes it has become a hype in europe to dislike the united states, it makes me sick becuase it are always the same tiny geeks who say this.

but the yankee nationalists make me sick too, makes me wanna piss on the american flag and put a video of it on youtube.

Less than ten years ago, the vast majority of Europeans loved America. Everybody wanted to go there on holidays, study there etc. Right after 9/11 America had the greatest support in Europe.

It is the way that the American government has behaved since then that has created the Anti-American atmosphere.

HOLY SHIT!! how can u people TRY SO HARD to "justify" your stance that it just "sucks soooooo bad". You isolate only the people that "got it bad", but never mention how MANY PEOPLE love it. Try being a little bit more "narrow minded", as i see u are plenty capable of that.

I never said it sucks so bad, I said it's a nanny state.  I'm half American and I think it's a great country in transition right now.  And what I said is not anywhere near to off base.  It's been a long time since the rest of the modern world didn't have the same rights as Americans(and definitely the ability to go to a waffle house and buy 3 Bibles and whatnot) and now some of them have surpassed the US.  When I went back just a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised to see how much more regulation there was on everything.  And travel-travel is so regulated and everyone is treated so poorly that I wonder if the economic damage all the new rules have done actually outweighs and heightened safety the States might have because of it.

I really can't compare the two.  For me, I like living in Aus better but others would prefer Boulder, Colorado for reasons of their own.

For sheer nationalism, I'd say Aus as a whole is more nationalistic than the town of Boulder, but take a drive over to Adams county and they'd win hands down.

hardly a meltdown...what are you, like 15 years old? (mentally?)

put up the dough or shut the fuck up red neck.

are you going to back your comment or slink off quietly now you've been called out?

i bet i never see the money for the tickets...coz you are full of shit.

Are you really that dumb?  Is your English that bad.  He was implying that if you hate America so much, he'll pay to have you leave (and hopefully never come back).  Jesus Christ some people are just dumb.

Why is everyone in the world sitting around worried about what we think of our own country?

It's obvious we still run the planet.

I deal with "peers" from all over the world daily and don't see anyone living my lifestyle, simple minded or not.

As i said before, you only pick out the "bad" qualities of life, that really, ARENT BAD AT ALL. there are no MASS KILLINGS on a daily fucking basis. No roadside bombs. No limits to children. U dont have a fuckin clue.... dipshit
America is great because:

-I can lay my head on a pillow, not a rock.
-I can rent a blockbuster movie, fuck your girl at my crib, and then take her back to your house and she sleeps next to you without u ever knowing.
-Mcdonalds and NFL
-Movies, music, (electronica aside), ferrari's or corvettes

Yes, we are "really lacking" in great minds... Give me a break, fool.

Agreed that you can do all that in the USA, but you must realize that there are a dozen other countries in which you can do the same as well, the point is that USA does not have the monoply on freedom, there are plenty of other free countries as well which is why the US is in alliance with them (NATO). See countries like Canada, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Norway etc etc. all have just as high if not a higher standard of living then uncle Sam, but I have to admit since I love the NFL I give USA the advantage, I wonder if the GIANTS can repeat this year  ???

If average down to earth Americans were in charge of the USA instead of the racist and murdering Neocons, America would gain back its respect in the world, until then the USA will be hated the world over. I'll say it again, the everyday Americans are great people but your politicians are terrible and selfish. The USA needs another 1776 revolution to clear out washington and start over. The 100 billion dollars wasted in Iraq could have been put to much better use Stateside (investment in new energy, job creation etc) and in Afghanistan capturing Bin Laden, you know the dude that actually planned 9-11.

I think it is worse than the HUAC era in many ways; corporatism is far more rampant now and the citizenry is far more poorly informed. I think there will only be bilious clouds of confusion, fear and scapegoating rather than revulsion and embarassment.

I think this is a salient point, Deicide. The press was very proactive during this HUAC time and helped bring down McCarthy (Murrow particularly). Exactly those three have it but the average American does not, Bill and Warren are pissing there money away curing Aids in Africa and not spending it in the uSA and Soros is spending all of his money to bring down the republicans, and if the USA wasn't trillions in dent to China it would not be a lot to spend but the fact that all of the money spent of the war is borrowed they should slow down the spending, it's like someone who is barely able to make mortgage payments taking out another loan to buy an expensive car, its not responsible.

I often wonder whether people are getting farther removed/more ignorant as well. Complacent may be a better word. We enjoy so many creature comforts in the West, sometimes it is hard to understand/see that 1/2 the world lives on mere dollars a day. As well, sometimes I think that America-as-Empire is entering it's last phase and the collapse is imminent as empires runs their course. On the plus side, I travel a good deal and my talks with Americans, person-to-person, almost always reaffirm that they are good, intelligent  people who don't wear blinkers. I have yet to meet a person who will admit to voting for GWB, so there may be hope!  :)

yeah I agree it's a lot but that doesn't help the average joe, I agree that the citezens are rich but they aren't going to hand over money to help the gov't out, even a shithole 3rd world country has rich people in it but that does not help the economy as a whole unless the billionaires help out and buy the debt from China but then you give those guys all the power.

My arguement is not about how rich the small minority are it's about the wasteful spending of the gov't that has hurt the economy, what good is having a ton of money if you don't use it wisely, between China and the Saudis the American economy owes them a ton of cash.

Its funny... everyone that doesnt "have it great" in america always suffers.... And how u foreigners just "happen to know" so much why america sucks so bad but have never step foot on it. All u get is the media telling u this, or telling u that. Live here for one month. Have 15,000 dollars for whatever, no bills, just pure freedom and tell me if u dont find it better living standards u retard.

I've done that: 6 months in the US with money went from Washington State to California then across to Florida, New York and back home. I had 30 000$ Had a great time in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, period.

Did the same in Greece last year. Had 20 000 euros.

Let me just tell you one thing: I had a WAY better time in Greece. Felt secure, people were nicer, less expensive, you can walk in the middle of Athens at night, completly drunk without a problem. In the U.S., well let's just say that Watts ain't a friendly neighborhood. The girls are WAY dirtier in Europe too and way more attractive anyways! Most of them have no guilt about sex and most take it in the ass...

Next Year I'm going to Thaîland so I'll be able to compare but as of now: Europe is WAY nicer than the U.S.

I love when bunch of american schoolboys try to brag how fu*king great place USA is, because their arguments are so childish. Still, 90% of serial killers are from USA, 97 % of shcool shootings has happen in USA, 60% gun related deaths of civilian population has happen in USA, your health care is poor, your infant mortality rate is higher than it is in many of the developing countries, your life expectancy is dropping while it is rising in other developed countries, your industries is mostly owned by foreign owners. According to your own newspapers, there is 40 % of americans with some kind of mental disturbance. Your drug problems are overwhelming, you have as much HIV positive people than they have in africa.

Your country has been great, but that is history. You are going downhill with increasing speed, and there is no way to stop it. You live in illusion of greatness, which is uphold by your media, so average citizens doesn't have a clue what is happening.  You live in the  police state, where all  policy-making has been done by plutocracy, and where you cannot  participate it even as a voter, because your silly methods of voting. Your country is one of the few which hasn't sign Kyoto protocol, but your level of pollution is unbearable. Your country has been in war just about any given time of history with some far away country, and because of that, your military expenses are highest of the world.  You dope heads put billions of dollars just to get your own boys killed in Iran or Afganistan, and for what? Just to keep your military budget as a greatest item of expenditure in your economy. Your quality of education has been sliding down, while your underemployment rate has been rising...You are the most ignorant people in any industrialized country, and so fu*cking proud for it, that it makes any one with right mind puke his guts out.

If I had to live in North America, other than my home town of NYC, I should like to live in Montreal. Do you have an opinion concerning Montreal?
It is absolutely my favourite Canadian city! It is wonderfully laid out in a nice kind of Parisian mix of grid-and  -old-city-mess. Now, you can take the metro, which is again more European than Toronto's, or you can walk, which I prefer. What I really like is that there are trees everywhere (Jane Jacobs? probably not!) and things are walkable. Also, the Old City is nonpareil - the last time I was there there was a Tintin retaurant! And on Rue St. Denis a Tintin store...but, I digress. There is a cosmopolitaness that is so lacking in Toronto. The buildings are unique: 'a vendre; a louer.' There is character; there is life! Saul bellow once lived there, Mordechai Richler certainly did. I always visit as much as I can. pm Colossus or Stavios, etc. for the real inside stuff. They can give you the ground-level reality.  :)

America is a very diseased and sick society. I always laugh that they try to act like a superior nation to older and wiser nations when in their own backyard there is terrible poverty and violence.  You invade sovereign nations and kill women and children yet don't tackle the war in your own garden.

A sick society that will eventually implode. Western Democracy has been a disastrous experiment that only benefit very few elite. Things will change one day.

Change for what? Islam? Over my dead body... >:(

Your totally mising the point. All of these "statistics" u talk about are what u "hear" on "paper"... I dont know ONE person that falls under ANY of the criteria u listed. If you LIVE here, u "get" what we mean as far as having a great life. If you are offering an outside perspective about how its just "sooo bad", then u just dont get it..

Boon, just look at the fatso in his avatar, that should tell ya volumes ;)

Colossus is a fundamentalist nutcase. No need to pm him.

I agree with your observations, have been there many times and wouldn't mind living there.

Why not move there?
I guess because where I live is sort of my natal place. I'm a small town mouse at heart.  :)

I too am currently in a phase without a mobile device, though admittedly it was forced upon me and it would avail me little to have one right now. I can understand the concept of the 'home town' though it is something foreign to myself. What drove you to give up the cell phone?

Because people just phoned up just to talk: "hey, what's up,"etc. Farkin' maddening! Not 'Hey what's up? Let's meet at' etc.  Just a waste of time an money. You know what? My ground line and answering machine is just fine for me.  :

Are you one of the many getbig multimillionaires?

Nope, that's a mythical beast of some sort right?

I get up and run my business everyday, pay my taxes every year, and live as close to how I want as my workload and wallet allows. I have worked very hard and have something to show for it.

That's the deal I have with America, and it's a bargain IMO.

Interview with Justin Webb, BBC US Reporter and Author in one of the British papers today:

Justin Webb - Doesn't hate Americans
BEFORE we get  to your book – do you believe Obama can win?
Yes. If he wins all the states Gore won in 2000, plus one more, he can. It’ll be quite tight down to the wire, unless one of them cocks up.

Why did you write Have a Nice Day?
I think America’s strengths are under-reported and their weaknesses over-reported, and we feel able to be contemptuous of Americans in a way we’d feel uncomfortable with if it was any other people. But when you look at its contribution to the world in its short history, how we depend on and enjoy American things, what they’ve made available, it’s pathetic to have that view.

But isn’t it run by bonkers evangelical Christians who don’t believe in evolution?
We over-emphasise the nutty religion. Americans do have a problem with rationality – there’s a side of the American psyche that’s very credulous, which is why Halloween is such a success; they like to be scared by ghosties and have an interest in the supernatural. And, yes, bizarre evolution issues come up in Presidential debates. But we don’t have sight of the decent things American evangelicals do, like prison work and aid. One of the Bush administration’s huge successes has been its funding of measures to tackle Aids in Africa.

What about their gun obsession?
Well, it’s interesting that gun ownership can co-exist with peacefulness. Appalling things happen, of course, but at the same time they’re able to create a quite genteel  society. The US equivalent of a British market town is much more peaceful than in Britain, yet they’re much more heavily armed. Of course, I don’t think we should carry guns; I just throw that out as a thought.

What’s wrong with America?
I don’t think it appreciates the strength of its diversity. The ongoing debate about immigration is a giant case of missing the point. It’s a nation of settlers: look at the US Olympic team – 33 were born outside the States. Militarism is also a problem. There’s a tendency for people to set too much store by soldiers.

You say the American psyche is shaped by the landscape. How?
America’s the only first-world country with third-world weather. It’s amazingly rough: sandstorms, extreme heat, tornadoes. It explains the roughness of the American psyche. There’s a brutality about life that there isn’t in Europe.

In what way?
Like the easy acceptance of violence. Prisons are more brutal, and Americans are keener in general to resort to war. And there isn’t a European-style safety net, with millions of children not having health insurance. They’re more willing to accept that because they have to battle these brutal elements.

You also mention the prudishness, like the uproar over Janet Jackson’s ‘boob’.
Yes, it’s an obsession. We were on holiday in South Carolina, and my London friend was getting changed under a towel, and someone said ‘don’t do that!’ It’s damaging, because nudity becomes bad or pornographic. That, and America’s crazed work ethic, is testament to the strength of the Pilgrim Fathers’ lineage, physical and mental.

What’s the one thing we could learn from Americans?
Cheerful seriousness. They’re serious, yet relentlessly optimistic. You can regard it as completely ridiculous, and plough your own miserable furrow, or embrace and learn from it. After seven years living there, I can appreciate Americans’ serious intention to have a nice day.

the US sucks in so many ways, cause of our government. its becoming/is a police state.  the sad thing is, there really isn't a better alternative.  not that i would leave the US even if there was.  if western europe wasnt so pussified/'progressive'/'tolerant', allowing millions of muslim/black immigrants in who will eventually take over their homelands+strict gun control(therefore freedoms are granted to the citizenry by the government, no way of preserving them without arms, therefore the so called freedom don't exist) then i think that would be a great alternative.  white countries seem to be purposefully self-destructing, especialy in western europe.

theres plenty of shit your country sucks for.. same with alot of others..

This Justin Webb character has no clue about America.

He paints America with a very broad brush when it's actually two countries. It's a big country; much bigger than the UK. You have the intelligent people on both coast and the religious fanatics in between. Leaving San Francisco and entering Memphis is like visiting another country. Everything you can think of (landscape, dialect, food, etc) is radically different when you leave the blue zones and enter the red. It would be no different, if I, went to a northern England hick town, and presented it as the "United Kingdom."
