Title: Greek Style Yogurt
Post by: Princess L on August 29, 2008, 12:57:50 PM
I just tried Trader Joes Greek Style 0% Nonfat Plain Yogurt and this stuff is AMAZING!  SOOOOO thick and creamy with 120 calories per cup, 22g protein, 7g carb and 0g fat, mixed with a little Splenda and blueberries.... YUMMY.  I'm hooked!   Not at all like the Dannon's and Yoplait's out there.

Also a good one:

Nice.  The one thing I hate about Trader Joes is you find something that's really great and two weeks later it's gone and they don't carry it anymore :/

Nice.  The one thing I hate about Trader Joes is you find something that's really great and two weeks later it's gone and they don't carry it anymore :/

So now that I'm addicted to this stuff, I make the trek over to Trader Joes (22.9 miles one way), stare at  the cooler and finally ask: "Where's the TJ greek yogurt?"  "Oh, that's TOS."  "temporarily out of stock"  >:( >:( >:(

So all is not lost, I decide to try a couple of their flavored cups - pomagranate, blueberry, etc. also labeled "greek style".  Let me tell you that was the most VILE tasting stuff ever!!!  :-X :-X :-X  Not even remotely close to the same texture, consistency or taste.

Fortunately, I've been able to find another brand that is comparable to TJ's.  It's Chobani 0% Greek Yogurt Non-Fat Plain.  Doctor it up with some fruit and splenda and it's OHHHH SOOOO YUMMY!  ;D

I've tried a couple of these Greek yogurts and they are good quality and have good taste.  Greek food is very healthy.. being part greek and knowing some of the foods I would say that Mediterranean food is one of the healthiest around.  You can also get some other greek yogurts like Fage and Oikos. High protein with very little to no fat or sugar.

Fage is good, but a lot more expensive than the Chobani and probably twice the price of the Trader Joes.  Never had the Oikos.

Once you have one of these Greek style (0% fat) and flavor it yourself, you'll never go back!  The protein / carb ratio doesn't even come close either.

The other day I mixed Oikos Plain Yogurt w/fat free Cottage Cheese and grated Parmesan and granulated garlic....heated it up in the microwave and added chopped cooked chicken breast and heated it all up together.  Fresh cracked black pepper on top.  Tasty :)

Spinach in that mixture is good also.

just picked up Fage yogurt from Trader Joe's, as well as Kefir milk. I gotta say, don't care for either much, especially the kefir milk. My GF loves it though. She says they serve the milk @ Turkish and Greek restaurants. She likes it with salt...stirs it in n drinks it. Idk, lol. I can't. Glad I bought the yogurt with the honey. Helps tons!

Haven't gotten around to trying the Kefir yet.  Fage is the most expensive of the Greek yogurts I've found, but it's also probably my favorite taste and texture (they're all pretty comparable).  Have you tried the PLAIN and then adding your own fruit and sweetener?  I don't care for any of the pre-flavored ones.   They all have an artificial taste/aftertaste to them.

Found another one that's pretty good.

The only one I've tried that was NASTY was Greek Gods  :-X  Maybe I got a bad one :-\

You are talking about Ayran, not Kefir.  Ayran is yogurt with sparkling water and a little salt.  Surprisingly very refreshing.

Haha you're fucking nuts!  The honey flavored is the BEST greek yogurt I've ever tasted and I've TASTED IT ALL!  I don't know about the other flavors but the honey flavored is hands down the best greek yogurt I've ever had.  Their Ice Cream is even better!

I am comparing 0% fat to 0% fat PLAIN. 8 oz Chobani 0% plain = 140 cals, 0g fat, 9g carb and 23g protein.
6 oz Greek Gods HONEY = 250 calories, 14g fat, 23g carb, 22g sugar, and 6g protein. No comparison IMO.
Greek Gods label claims this is "Greek style" yogurt and that Greek yogurt is "a thick and creamy yogurt, full of body and rich in taste." However, despite the strong implication, this is not Greek style strained yogurt ~ it's regular yogurt with  extra thickeners. In other words, it's not even as good as a good quality American-style yogurt. If you have any doubts, compare the nutritional content since strained yogurt has more liquid taken out, the nutrients are more concentrated. Fage Total 0% has about 15 grams of protein per six ounces; Greek Gods 0% plain has 6 grams of protein per six ounces ~ less than half as much. Furthermore, the extra pectin doesn't make it "creamy", it makes it grainy and lumpy.  :-X All this could be forgiven IF it tasted good, but it doesn't.

Agreed.  I was surprised how awful the flavored ones were.  The only one that was OK was the Honey flavored one from Chobani.

I only buy it when it goes down to $1 each, which is about every third week or so.  Never even thought about Trader Joes, though.  Is it cheaper than that?

If you're getting 6 ounce cups for a buck, then that's a better deal than the Trader Joe's brand at 2.99 for 16 ounces.  Brown Cow has a "buy 2 get one free" coupon on their lids, which brings the price of their 5.3 ounce cups down to .79

Thanks.

My supermarket has the Chobani for 1.25 for 6 oz normally.  Even when it goes down to a buck, it's still double the price of regular yogurt.  I'm waiting for Target/Costco to get more supply.  Actually, Costco has it, but it's the multi-flavor packaging, not plain.

This thread has been absolutely great for me, Id never tried the stuff before. Since trying the flovored varieties and a few diff brands, I agree with princess, plain chobani and add fruit or stevia. Love it

I eat regular yogurt about every night, but this thread generated a lot of curiousity on my part about greek yogurt.. unfortunately, living in South Louisiana, I never thought I would see it outside of a few specialty food stores, which I rarely shop at. my local grocery recently began stocking some of the chobani and i picked one up as soon as i saw it.. grabbed the rasberry chobani and had it last night.. it was excellent! my only regret was that i didn't buy more!! Thank you Princess!! This will definitely be a mainstay in my diet

Oh well.  I like the Trader Joe's brand.  I mix it with granola & chia seeds...

I am glad that just about everyone I've told about Greek yogurt (here and IRL) LOVES it.  It's becoming quite popular as of late, so it's much easier to find.  Don't be fooled though.  Dannon and Yoplait are hopping on the bandwagon and in true form they use cheap, inferior ingredients and processes like gelatin and milk from hormone treated cows. The gelatin allows them to artificially inflate the protein content. I wonder why they need to ADD vitamin D  ::)  Stick with the real, original thing - Fage, Chobani, Oikos, Brown Cow, Siggi, Trader Joes...

Sounds like a lot of people like the flavored stuff  :-\  That's okay, but just give the 0% Plain (any brand) a try.  Add your own "stuff" - see what you think.  I used to hate "plain" yogurt until I tried this.  I add fresh or frozen blueberries, a little Splenda and a smidge of peanut butter (cuz it goes with everything  :P).  The perfect snack!

Well, the Dannon and Yoplait have taken over the shelves at my grocery store  ::)  I've tried them both and have to admit the Dannon is pretty good.  The Yoplait on the other hand  :-X (not smooth and creamy and has an off taste) which isn't surprising since the ingredients are as follows:
Cultured pasteurized non-fat milk, milk protein concentrate, Kosher geletin, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D.  Does not contain live active cultures  ::)  So.....what makes this a yogurt?

Ingredients in Fage:

When not concerned about carbs, honey is a great topping.

When going low-carb, try mixing a scoop of protein powder with it. It tastes like eating raw cake batter when you were a kid.

I like using agave nectar.  Stevia is nasty by the way.  You have to mix it with splenda or something else to make it tolerable.

They're probably thinking HFCS - not regular fructose.

For the past few months I've been dealing with a "rash" on my palms.  The dermatologist gave me a steroidal ointment and said it should clear right up.  It didn't.  He told me to stop using harsh soap, antibacterial gel, etc. and keep my hands out of water.  Continue using the ointment 2Xday.  It still hasn't cleared up.

I've noticed it gets better if I don't have yogurt for a few days.  I didn't have any for about 6 days and it was almost completely gone.  Had some Fage and it was back in full force within 2 days.  I think I'm allergic  :'( :'( :'( :'(

That sucks!
Take a break from eating the Fage for about six to eight weeks; then try eating it again.
Sometimes, certain food allergies clear up for some people.

hmm interesting.  Generally even lactose sensitive people can have some yogurt or hard aged cheeses as the the lactose is much lower than fresh cheese and milk products.

Oh, is it a lactose tolerance issue?
I wonder if a digestive enzyme like lactase would help at all.

Greek Yogurt - another talk of the town diet fad at the gyms nowadays. Not as if the wheel has been reinvented.  :D Stick to what has worked for thousands of years.

I make Fresh Yogurt twice a week from 2% Neilson milk - no preservatives, sugars, or anything else. It tastes just as good as Greek Yogurt or better - with half the cost. You can add fresh fruits and berries as you please for taste.

The price has come down so much that it's pretty much a wash in terms of cost.  A 17 ounce container of FAGE was originally $5.59.  It's now $2.99-$3.29

Yup.   My Stop and Shop recently started selling a proprietary brand.  It's 88 cents for 6 oz.   Add a little agave syrup and some walnuts, and it's perfect.

Prices have instead gone up here for dairy products.

In fact, just checked the prices last week (March 14th) while shopping for groceries. The price for 17 ounces was $6 and change.

South of the 49th parallel - you get much better prices on literally everything. When i stayed near the border - i did all the shopping across in Buffalo - paid half of what i pay here for literally everything.
