So anyone out there that may have thought Kimbo Slice would be the number one ranked heavyweight in the world someday was really only kidding themselves. The problem with that all comes down to the way EliteXC has marketed him.
Kevin Fergusen just wanted to fight, which is obvious because he made a name for himself fighting on the internet against bums in back yards and parking lots. When he decided to make the move into the MMA universe people cringed, but Kimbo knew what he was doing.
Kimbo was and still is a bad guy. There is no denying that. Fans hate on Kimbo because they feel as though he got pushed to the top when there were many fighters that deserved it over him. But not every fighter can be marketed the way Kimbo Slice can. This is a story of not hating the player, but hating the game.
When EliteXC signed Kimbo Slice they had dollar signs in their eyes. They knew that fans would watch their product because they were showcasing “the internet street fighting legend”. You can’t hate Kimbo for being there when EliteXC decided to throw an abundance of money at him and put him in main event slots against the likes of Bo Cantrell or Tank Abbott. You can’t hate him because EliteXC set it up so his next opponent would be Ken Shamrock instead of Brett Rogers. And you can’t hate Kimbo Slice because he got knocked out last night by relative unknown Seth Petruzelli.
If anything, hate EliteXC, hate Jared Shaw. They are the ones that set this all up. Last night when Kimbo Slice lay sprawled out on the floor, Jared Shaw can be seen in the background screaming at the referee about a shot to the back of the head. When questioned about it later he stated that it was because he wanted the best safety for the fighters.
Bullshit.

Shaw was pissed because he just watched his money train get derailed. Plainly and simply and that is the reason why fans hate Kimbo Slice, because he is the money train for somebody else and getting marketed in a way that make the hardcore audience hate him. How many times have you see Dana White jump out and down screaming at the referee? None. Why? Because Dana is unbiased at the end of the day. Sure, Chuck Liddell may be his boy and it probably killed him inside watching “The Iceman” get laid out by Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans, but you didn’t see him get all out of sorts over it.
This loss may be the best thing to possibly happen to Slice. It will lift the weight off his shoulders that EliteXC so heavily threw down upon him. Now we can see fights like Kimbo vs. Rogers, or Kimbo vs. anyone for that matter that actually stands a chance. The reasons why we haven’t been seeing those fights lay solely in the hands of the EXC brass.
For every risk there is a reward and by still fighting last night with Ken Shamrock out due to a cut, Slice may have lost but still came out looking good. He was very humble towards Petruzelli and did not have a bad thing to say. At the post fight conference he joked “this guy knocked me out in front of my family. What the fuck is up with that?”
Those are the reasons people should be loving this guy. He trains his ass off, he only wanted to be a fighter in this MMA fight game, and he is one of the nicest most humble people in the sport. Like all of us, Kevin Fergusen just wants to bring a pay check home to support his family. Why hate on that?
Kimbo will live to fight another day and deserves credit where it is due for the fact that he did step up and fight Seth even though he had no clue who he was. He didn’t let the show sink when Shamrock was forced out. He could have, he probably should have, but he didn’t.
This is not the last we see of “the internet street fighting legend”.

basically what I've been saying from day one..
-
say the same thing i said that kimbo will be back!
-
Watching Kimbo get knocked out by a LHW unknown made my weekend because finally all the people that say he can hang with top heavyweights will hopefully enter reality.
-
The part I was calling a good read was the part about shaw and Elite XC. I could care less if someone thinks Kimbo will be back. If they feed him Cans then we know he is done... Simple as that. They will not pit him against Rogers nor will they pit him against anyone with skill. It will either be a rematch with Seth or Ken Shamrock just so Kimbo gets a win. They can't take the chance of him losing again, unless they decide to make whoever fights him next the new Elite Cash Cow. Even then you have to ask how much more amazing of a win could someone get over Kimbo other then a 14 second KO?

kimbo vs rogers would be a complete disaster for kimbo and elite.
rogers would mop the floor up with kimbo imo.

Agreed but then they could hype Rogers up? That is about the only route they have to go. Unless they do the rematch and hope Kimbo doesn't lose. If they put him against anyone lesser and feed him cans they can't make it a legitamated main event. Basically they have one of two routes, hope Kimbo can make a comeback or throw him to someone and make that person the new hype! either way he is done! :-X

I agree here. Unless kimbo just happens to "get it" and start blowing away guys..etc...he's done. I'm thinking from elite's POV. How can they recover some of the $$$ they invested into kimbo from a marketing perspective. Like you said...either HOPE he doesn't lose against bums while NOT headlining him, or they can cut their loses and sign him up for a tougher guy and HOPE he wins to gain instant cred back.
a rematch...they could do that but he'd have to blow him out. All in all...imo...kimbo is a reg. tough street dude....dudes I grew up with...he took a once ina life time deal....he simply doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the versatility of mma and how 200lbs guys can KO his 6'4 240lbs a$$.
if anything this ruined his "gun shyness" he'll be "thinking" now. questioning his chin.
-
“If he ever wanted a rematch, I would 100 percent give it to him.”
– Elite XC’s “Rocky Balboa” Seth Petruzelli mentioned at the Elite XC post-fight press conference that he would gladly grant Kimbo Slice a rematch if that’s what he and the organization wanted.

He better be gun shy know, the dude got knocked out by a off balance jab.. then the ground shots he took weren't even that solid... Makes you wonder if Kimbo ever had a jaw, other then one made of glass. I want to see what happens next. How big of a contract did he sign with Elite does anyone know. Was it a 6 fight deal or what? All I know is dude was OUT COLD! I love the picture of him grappling with the ref.. ha-ha.
-
AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHA. Damn I knew he was gonna lose, but I had no idea the replacement was gonna smash him. Now I want to hear people still claim he is one of the top heavies ???
AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ;D

I've read boat loads of mma articles/interviews/posts, and I don't recall hearing/reading that once. I don't even think I heard any of the kids on Sherdog say that. Reference sources please.

Kimbo pissed me off in that fight cause he didn't touch gloves with Petruzelli , like Kimbo tried to punk him off before the match started...ahh well, he got served in the end, hehe

I actually think this rematch would do better ratings than this last event. Now, they have a story line, "Kimbo's Revenge." Of course, if Kimbo gets KTFU again. That'll be the final nail in the coffin.

To see the looks on a group of skinny, 13 year old, Tapout wearing, sububurban kids, as their hero gets knocked out again in under 30 seconds would be priceless.
Although I would prefer to see Arvloski deliver a quick roundhouse kick to his head.

I am sorry I have a job. I don't have time to search and I really don't need to defend my point. If you don't agree with what I say say so but I have read many delussional individuals think Kimbo was the second coming. I have also heard alot of the "kids" on sherdog as well as other sites talk about Kimbo being a better prospect then Lesner. I also heard his size and punching power would be more of a match for "___________" (fill in HW there).

Fuck Kimbo. He is not a product of "the game". He should have been humble and conceded that he is nothing more than a glorified street thug. Instead, he went with it, believed his own hype and let his head get too big. He was even calling out guys like Liddell ::)

You honestly should remove this post. It has to be one of the most ignorant posts by you ever. When you were a bodybuilder did you go into a competition conceding the loss. Do you go to the pump up room and look at the guys and go up to them and say "man you look awesome I shouldn't be here, you guys are just to good". Come on man you are not THIS stupid. Another thing, if you are someone like Kimbo who makes shit money fighting on the internet and an organization nows wants to pay you BIG dollars and put you on TV and you get international exposure, commercials and a seat on major talk shows would you turn that down. Again you are not that stupid are you?

Let me word this in a way that even you can understand. No where did I say he should concede defeat in a fight ::) What I said was that he should have never gone along with the hype. Instead, he should have admitted to being a beginner with virtually no skills.
Think about it. This POS calls out Liddell, but he can't get past a GAY TUF reject...ha ha ha ha!!!

So you are telling me if you had the reputation Kimbo had on the internet and worldwide and you are making maybe $5,000 a month fighting in backyards in front of 10 people sometimes a few more and then an organization tells you they will give you $500,000 to fight, put you on TV, get you sponsorships, talk show appearances, worldwide print media, worldwide super stardom and you don't have to do a thing except act the way you have always acted............... you wouldn't do it. I see not one thing Kimbo has done wrong. He didn't change a bit. He had a badass attitude coming into the MMA scene and he kept it. The only (and biggest change) thing is he is making some really good bank doing it. If he thought he was so bad ass that he didn't need any help or needed to improve his fighting skills I guarantee you he wouldn't have hired Bas Rutten and the others who are helping him.
Him calling out Liddell is nothing out of the ordinary. He uses psyche alot to beat his opponents just like Tyson did. I would think fighting in MMA you have to do everything you can to win. And talking shit, acting tougher than you really are, are just things that come along with being in MMA. I think you are so far off the mark.

The best and most beloved MMA champs don't need to trash talk and are hugely humble i.e. Andersen Silva, GSP, Fedor, etc. Had Kimbo, been humble from the get-go, this loss would not have been a big deal. Instead, it's been proven that everything he thought he was, he is not.

The difference was Iron Mike, in his prime, could back it up and he had sweeeet boxing skills.

Kimbo could back it up too as shown by his back alley record. He still did pretty good up until the other day too. But no matter what, in fighting you have to do everything you can to get the upper hand cause anyone can beat anyone at anytime. If you can physch out a guy before the fight even starts you have a great advantage. Tyson was great at it. Everyone he fought was scared as hell of him even before the fight started except Holyfield

Who were the top tier back alley fighters that Kimbo has defeated?
Don't get me wrong. I'm think Kimbo is a tough guy but we aren't comparing apples to apples here.
-
how come guys like GSP & Andersen don't need to do all of trash talking b4 fights? They are dominant AND humble.
Kimbo was trash talking joke that exposed.

Holy shit! I'm defending a guy who I could care less about. I never really liked him when I saw him fight on the internet. I always thought he was fighting guys I am pretty sure I could kick their ass. they all looked like shit. I couldn't wait for him to get his ass kicked. I always thought he was a loud mouth but then I heard him talk on some shows and he seemed okay.

So you mention two guys who don't. How about BJ, Serra, Tyson, Ali, and many others who do talk shit to hype up the fight. Some guys are quiet and some guys aren't. Not everyone prepares the same way. Why do I have to explain this to you. In BB I understand where maybe you guys didn't do this kind of stuff. But in my sport it happened. A HUGE part of a match is the pysching out of the opponent. I have gone up on stage against a bigger opponent and then I do my eyes wide open shit and flex my muscles and the guys face gets all meek. I literally took the wind out of his sails at the table.
maybe I was'nt paying attention but I don't remember kimbo talking all that much trash...

Exactly. I have seen him on several shows and I never once heard him talk trash. Mindspin, other than a MMA related rag or show, tell us where you saw or read Kimbo talking trash.

Niether GSP or Anderson are marketable. I have a feeling you are bitter because Kimbo is so marketable yet your heroes are not. That is just life. GSP does not have the personality to be a spokesperson that will give MMA the worldwide appeal they are trying to achieve. And no matter what you say that is a fact. And the evidence is in the amount of exposure Kimbo receives. He has been on every major talk show, publication and radio show in the country. The facts speak for themselves. No matter how much you don't like him, he is very marketable.

You think he is marketable? It's not like he is endorsing Nike and Gatorade. He has a curiosity factor, sure. I just don't see him as marketable. After Tyson was convicted of Rape he still had people wanting to see him fight, but he couldn't land an endorsement contract. That's kind of how I see Kimbo, I mean what company would honestly pay him to endorse their products? He can barely speak english.

He marketable for MMA I did not say for product endorsements. He is 100% a curiosity factor and he has to be taken advantage of while he still is. That is exactly what is happening. Unless their is some company that specializes in "Ugly" products I don't see him endorsing many products

It is truly remarkable just how dunce you are...it's no wonder you are a colossal failure in life. BTW, that's merely an observation, not an attack.
Again, let me dumb this down for you. Kimbo got a shitload of publicity...that is an undeniable fact. However, it was the result of savvy marketing. Dumb people who watched his youtube backyard brawls thought he could step in the ring/cage and destroy any of the legit MMA fighters. The promoters built this up by matching him up against complete cans and making him out to be a "top heavyweight". BTW, Kimbo went right along with it. Once he realized that he was in over his head, he did start talking with more humility. Anyway, as it turns out, it was all hype. Call him the Milli Vanilli of MMA. He was marketable while the sham was being perpetuated. Once exposed, the cash-cow was slaughtered.
As for whether or not guys like GSP & Andersen are marketable, to some degree you are right. In the US, their broken english poses a problem. However, in their countries, they are rock starts. Nonetheless, without having to talk trash and be cocky assholes, they still win. Their popularity is growing. And, get this...each gets paid $500,000/yr just to wear a branded tshirt into the cage. They are making A LOT more on other endorsements....not bad.
BTW, GSP just signed with CAA Sports, a division of Creative Arts Agency, one of the largest entertainment and sports agencies in the world. So much for him not being marketable ::)
Keith, you're not very bright my friend. You should go back to posting gross pics on the sex board....

Boy it sure is good you got out of competing cause you truly are a fucking idiot. You went nowhere and you heading nowhere. So good choice there. To hard to argue with someone like you. You are stuck in your ignorant way of thinking. And I am pretty confident I have been a whole lot more successful in life and what I choose than you. In fact that isn't even debatable. You had an average body for a bodybuilder so don't get to big headed. If not please post all the major shows you won. You look great to guys on here me included but it was all for nothing. A few mags here and there big deal. Nice GSP signs with CAA. Lets see what they do with him. You talk out of line on here constantly. Signing with CAA is a great thing but he will get pushed off to the side. We will see, but I am pretty sure you won't be seeing him in many movies and making a million dollars a picture. Lets see if they can at least get him a million dollar Nike contract or American Express. But regardless it does neither me or you any good. Sorry son you will lose this debate.

LOL. You think I'm basing my life's success on the three years I spent competing...oh brother. Keith, there is NO success in bodybuilding. Even if I had the genetics to be the greatest Mr. O ever, I'd still take the life I have now.
Now, back to the issue being debated. Was Kimbo overhyped and did he deserve to be put in the same league as guys like Fedor, Couture, Bartnett, Arlovski, etc.? If you still say yes, then I will acquiesce and let you live blissfully in unmitigated ignorance.
-

If he was put in the league with them then I would think he would be fighting them. Has he fought any of those guys. They are using Kimbo for the hype and thats it. The guys doesn't impress me as a fighter at all. But, the media and general public does and Elite is taking advantage of that. Is he overhyped as a fighter 10000000% yes. But is Elite using him in the right way to get people to watch and increase popularity 10000000000% yes.

I don't think he was even over hyped....
I just think Elite signed him and were willing to let the chips fall where they may...
it's the same deal with putting woman on their cards, anyone with half a clue knows womans MMA fights will never amount to much (just like womans boxing), but elite needs something different to throw into the mix and kimbo (and gina carrano) were perfect for the part...

Womens MMA is a growing sport. Shit boxing is not that popular anymore, so how can a new side of the sport take off when the main side is slowly decreasing in popularity. How many times do you hear guys say, lets get the MMA PPV compared to hey, I am getting the taylor fight this weekend... Like I mentioned in another post, I amazed at how many lil girls are training and backstage at our local shows...

Mindspin, I agree with your main thrust; but where was Kimbo anywhere close to being a trash talker?
Honestly, all I can recall is a humble guy that played fair; Christ he even made sure a couple of the guys he had knocked out were up and recovering.
Should he be on the front of ESPN mag? no; has he gone along with the Kimbo gravy train? yes; was he ever a trash talker? not that I can recall.
I dont think there is any footage of him trash talking to any large degree.
Which fight/occasion did you see him acting like a wanker?
