Title: Any of you turned your back on alcohol?
Post by: Swedish Viking on November 02, 2008, 11:57:07 AM
To live in Sweden and not drink is basically a social sin, but it's become more and more common because of the spike in alchoholism in recent years.  I've never drank much but I decided a while back that even the amount that I did drink was too much(just 1-3x per year) and that I wasn't going to touch it anymore.  Anyone else come to the same conclusion?  Anyone run into any social problems because of it?

Yeah, I dont like drinking at all, always gets me into Alot of trouble, and going out without drinking and having drunk people around you gets on my nerve.
So the social bit suffers...

I love red wine.
Beer from time to time.

But I also didn't drink at all for years.

I partied a lot in high school, more to be socially accepted than anything, typical fat kid syndrome wanted to be liked. Led to a lot of drinking, beer mostly, rec drugs on weekends coke, ex, zanex, pain killers. I never considered myself a addict but I was more addicted to getting fucked up, rather than a particular drug. When I found myself at 19 and 240lbs I knew I had to do something. Quitting drinking and partying was actually pretty easy and then I started working out and the rest is history. 4 years later I'm a personal trainer, have competed in a bodybuilding, preparing for another one soon and living the healthy life. But now I'm addicteed to working out  ;D

I drink once in a while, my birthday and special occasions with friends but its very rare and I usually just have a couple drinks (no beers), however I still love to smoke weed just not daily anymore, couple times per week usually suffices (hell its the only way to eat enough food to bulk up  ;))

Haven't touched alcohol is 4 years now. It's not smart to juice, smoke, drink and use rec. drugs at the same time.

Is that what you're doing with the exception of the alcohol?  Not judging, just wondering with the way you put it.

I'm trying to cut back on drinking on weekends, but its kinda tough. I'm in my early 20's and most of my friends like to go out to the bars on the weekend. If I don't go, I don't really have much else to do. And I hate going out and being around drunk people when I'm not drinking. I would rather just stay at my apartment and watch tv.

Being sober around drunk people is horrible! It's a good wake up call though!

Word, this was what I was talking about.  I've had to kind of seperate myself from my friends over this.  We're mid to late 20s so it's not quite your situation, but it's similar.  I've found, for the most part, that I am not the one with the problem if I don't drink-it's those around me who want me to drink.

Yeah like the ones that "think" the bartender wants to hook up with them and you have to fight with them to leave!

I didn't like getting a belly full of achohol so I did something worse.  I like the feeling of taking 2 vicodin and then going out and feeling fucking great as opposed to drinking a 6pack and other drinks also saved a lot of money.

It only gets to be a problem when you need 4 pills rather than 2 pills and then the 4 pills gets bumped to 8 pills and then the trouble really happens.

You wake up and you're addicted to opiates.

good thing I only stopped after my script ran out cause I have numerous friends who didn't and got strung out.

I'm Scottish - drinking is what we do, but yes its a real problem.

It is impossible to give up alcohol and still have a social life here.

If you did you would always be the only sober one out. To make matters worse, a night out in Glasgow ( the stabbing capital of the civilised world), is hard on the nerves if your sober as there is always some headcase wanting to prove how hard he is. :-\

people say the same thing everywhere. its just an excuse. you dont have to drink just because thats what everyone else is doing.

honestly candy - the drink culture in britain is totally different to america, and even the drink culture in scotland and ireland is different again to england.

in scotland we get drunk at 10-12 years old. I have stayed in canada, over there you do things outside, you play sports, go hiking, camping, hang out, pool/snooker halls. Hell even when you go to a club, its pretty common to not drink there - that would never happen here.

Don't get me wrong you can go out and not drink, its just very very hard. You are a weirdo/freak  if you dont drink here - or american  ;D

Panda, Belfast is just as bad. So many stabbing s though mnay are not reported as people like to take the law into their own hands and don t like to involve the PSNI

People drink for fun cos they enjoy it. Training for me is just as fun.

i used to drink because i enjoy it, i still enjoy it - going out here is no fun if you dont drink, you're always watching your back, have more inhibitions etc

however what i don't enjoy is the hangover and the cost. Every night out here costs a minimum of £100 - around $200, and the hangovers keep me ill for 2 days, then i get a flu by the end of the week every single time. :(

goudy, i have been to dublin, galway and letterkenny - good pubs there  8)

oh and trining is just as fun for me too - but to be honest i think its made me antisocial, as i think about the effect the drink will have on my lifting, will i be down for 2 days with a hangover, then the cold etc.

I've found, for the most part, that I am not the one with the problem if I don't drink-it's those around me who want me to drink.

I get that as well.  I managed pubs/clubs/bars for 7 years, and stopped drinking almost straight away.  When you have to deal with a constant stream of drunken dickheads every weekend, having a drink yourself is the last thing you want to do.  Now whenever I go out, I get my mates trying to get me to drink, and it just pisses me off and wrecks the night.

Also, the Scot/Irish guys are right, the drink culture in the UK is completely different to the US.  Brits go out to get drunk, nothing else.  People 'pop out for a quick one' and get completely smashed.  It's like a competition to see who can get the most wasted.

And then by the end of the night, you're mopping up someone's blood.

No gimmick my man, true story! I'm one of very few that can say bodybuilding is probably what saved my life. Unlike most of getbig I'm actually pretty involved in the fitness industry. Toney "X-man" Freeman was just at my house on thursday, and Dexter was in town for a guest posing and stopped by. I'm good friends with adipo 8 who happens to know these men personally, so hence I get to know them.

Two years in a row at the Olympia I have gone out and partied with Toney and have run into Ronnie at paris for the BSN party, and in 2007 went with his ronnie's crew to the strip club, along with adipo8 and our crew. I gave up a life that would only lead to death and/or jail to pursue and find my real passion. Fuck off if you think I'm some gimmick.

I too, have denounced alcohol... at least for a while.  My last drunken experience left me scarred in more ways than one.  The very thought of drinking makes me ill.

It wasn't like that.  From what I do remember, there were all kinds of brilliant ideas floating around that night.  I almost ended up with what would have been an unfortunate tattoo.

Fuck off if you think I'm some gimmick.
well if all that is true, your a lucky dude !!

why i think your a gimmick =...   everything about you, from what youve said, and from your handle, is pretty much a mirror image of myself and of what people here know of me.

Panda, Belfast is just as bad. So many stabbing s though mnay are not reported as people like to take the law into their own hands and don t like to involve the PSNI

People drink for fun cos they enjoy it. Training for me is just as fun.

I grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood, as well. It's so much a part of the culture that you're made to feel abnormal if you don't drink heavily.

the bolded sections

I drink once in a while, my birthday and special occasions with friends but its very rare and I usually just have a couple drinks (no beers), however I still love to smoke weed just not daily anymore, couple times per week usually suffices (hell its the only way to eat enough food to bulk up  ;))

and also many people say that matt damon looks kinda like me.. and jason boune is matt damons character ....

so yeah thats why i called you a gimmickj

freaky similarites bro

good story and good for you.  I've never had an addiction to drinking, I loved beer and probably only drank on average a six pack in 2-3 weeks.  1 maybe 2 at a time then days before I had more.  But had a hard last year and started drinking way more and learned real fast how it could become a problem.  I got to drinking a 12 every other day and sometime days in a row.  How quick it becomes a problem... I'm now getting back toward my casual drinking and it is much better than it being the daily need, that sucked.

I truly look at it like this...If you are a fcking asshole in the world and you do not drink or do drugs etc, then do the world a favor and start doing something...

If you are a drunk or do a lot of drugs and are an asshole in the world, then do the world a favor and sober the fuck up...

It truly is that easy...

By the way, I would hang out with people that smoke a ton of weed over people who can't leave the gym any day of the week...

Remember this...JESUS WAS A MUSHROOM...NOT A FUKING BARBELL...

First question was jesus the son of god, and i will say to you that the creator of all things "we will call him GOD" did in fact create what you believe to be jesus...But I will say that jesus is code name for mushroom...And if it takes me 2 thousands years to get people to write about this and create there own theory or BIBLE if you will, then i shall do so we can disgust this at a later date.

2nd question, how far does the rabbit hole go? No fucking clue...But I can tell you that Santa Claus isn't passing out presents at the bottom...

Haha, was gonna say the same thing. Anyway, the Scots and the Irish have it tough-there it is way harder not to drink, same with in nothern Sweden and Finland.  It's hard everywhere, but in those places it's REALLY hard.  Icelanders and Faroese aren't exactly doing great either.  I've travelled a lot and I've noticed that basically the darker the country is, the more it's people drink.  I just want to be away from all of it now.

Did weed when i was younger, coke etc. but i stopped doing that. I'm on the sauce 2 times a year, nothing more. Sauce is better than anything.

I drink alcohol, I have no problems with it and I have no intentions to quit. I rarely get hammered.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone can juice and at the same time say they don't drink because it's unhealthy. The juicing is potentially much worse but it's worth it, right?  ???

With juicing you at least have a goal. Juicing isn't a drug addiction, ok there are the dickheads that are too insecure or whatever to come off and act like fuckwits but not everyone is like that.

Plus watching so many people be complete fuckwits turns you off drinking. There are far more dickheads who drink than juice.

True, true. But what I was gunning at was the health issue with juicing. Alcohol isn't healthy but juicing is potentially worse.

a shot of hard liquor was worse for you than 50mg of anadrol  :o

I like drinking, but I do realize I have the tendency for it to be a problem, so I limit myself to drinking about twice a week.  My father was an alcoholic and I definetly don't want to go that route, however I couldn't see myself never drinking.  It is far too enjoyable, and in the end isn't happiness the pursuit of life?

On another note, tried this beer for the first time last night playing darts, shit fucked me up! ;D

Haven't read all these alcohol posts yet but alcohol has played a big part in my life so here's my two cents worth.

I come from an alcoholic family but I myself never had a problem with alcohol. My cousin (a lady) worked for Budweiser (actually made the beer) until she retired and we often discuss our very funny but mostly inebriated family and their antics over the holidays. And we often wonder exactly why we both never had a drinking problem ourselves.

She claims that alcolholism skips generations ..... meaning that sons and daughters of alcoholics will not become alcoholics but their grandkids (whether male or female) will.

That may or may not be true but I think the reason why I never had a drinking problem is due to the fact that my folks often asked me to join them with a cocktail just about the time I turned 14. My dad told me that I'd start drinking sooner or later anyway and he'd appreciate it if I'd confine my drinking to the home and avoid drinking outside of the family environment. At least until I turned 18.

So I got introduced to mild alcoholic cocktails consisting of Four Roses bourbon and 7-Up and never really did like the taste too much.

A few years later when all my under aged friends started drinking, it was a big thing for them but it actually meant nothing to me so I'd simply sit in and join then with a couple cans of beer (joints wern't even thought of back then).

On a few occasions I'd sit in with my uncle and his movie star friends and have a few very strong Tom Collins and end up puking in the back yard. Gin and me never hit it off.

While in Corps I favored Scotch but only the first two Scotch and Sodas and then I'd had my fill and switched to water or just plain old 7-Up. Got poisoned while in some Vietnamese bars and puked my guts out for a couple of days before someone carried me off to sick-bay to pump me out.

That seemed to cure me even of the little drinking I ever did and today I might have an occasional martini before a good meal or a Bloody Mary if I'm playing poker or a extra strong Margarita if I want to stay absolutely sober. No one understands it but Tequila has no affect on me whatsoever. I don't even get close to going momentarily blind.

I think I avoided alcoholism because I could have a drink way before a young kid's typical drinking age.  It was never a big thing for me to have a drink and get stupid cause I could get stupid without having anything to drink anyway.

So while my underaged friends were being stupid drinking Kamakazees or burning their mouths with some kind of drink that you had to light on fire, I just sat there like a somewhat less stupid fool enjoying a beer or a plain old glass of water and stealing car keys when anyone fell over and hit the deck.

I also enjoyed stealing stuff from the San Francisco 48'ers when they least expected it and hefting an occasional fire hydrant from  some fog-bound corner in the city, but I hated carrying my friends up to their front doors while their ired parents would give me hell for getting their wonderful son inebriated. At the age of 15 - 16 it's difficult to defend yourself under those conditions, so I'd just stand there like a sober fool and take their rants and raves while their cherubic son puked on my tennis shoes.

But on one great occasion I did get totally inebriated for some dumb reason and stold some ducks who were making a personal appearence at some night club opening (HONEST) (it was a setup) and sat them in the back of my old Ford and shot the hills of San Francisco just like Steve McQueen or some long gone big time star did in that movie. I had a hell of a blast hiding from the SF Police Department while listening to all my antics on some radio show who was paid to follow this missing duck episode...... but those damn ducks shit all over my back seat.

I also gotta admit that I did the  same thing sober and without those ducks just a month or so ago and ..... it's still a kick in the ass and always enjoyed by passengers in the suicide seat.(We stap the kids in the back seat where the ducks used to go.)

It's gotten to be kind of like a family tradition and a big thrill for young and old when it's done safely enough and without a pack of sqwaking ducks shitting all over in the back. The kids don't do that. They just laugh and ask to do it again.

Thanks for the memories! Time for a beer if I can find one. I don't think they make Four Roses bourbon anymore.

So while my underaged friends were being stupid drinking Kamakazees or burning their mouths with some kind of drink that you had to light on fire, I just sat there like a somewhat less stupid fool enjoying a beer or a plain old glass of water and stealing car keys when anyone fell over. I also enjoyed stealing stuff from the San Francisco 48'ers when they least expected it and an occasional fire hydrant from  some fog-bound corner in the city.

I never got into drinking alcohol.  I have been drunk 3 times in my whole life (maybe 4).  I have had maybe less than a case of beer my whole life.  I have never smoked a thing and in fact never even held a cigarette or joint.  Never did any hard drugs ever.  I did test cyp 200mg for 6 months and none since.

Keith! Yea, Yea, Yea! But tell them what really happened when you did "experiment" with alcohol during and after Alan's wedding. Maybe the Black Orchid will refresh your memory?

How in the world did you not pay a visit to some Hawaiian shaman after your spider bite? I don't know how you could stay sober dealing with something like that...

Well that was one of the three times I got drunk.  For the others here in short.  Myself Stunt and Pete G were at Mr USA Alan Ichinose's wedding.  It was boring at the reception so we decided to drink.  In about 30 minutes I had 12 shots of Bacardi 151 and about 6 Light Beers.  After dunking creme puffs in the Barcardi and then lighting them on fire and eating them we then went to a popular night club called Black Orchid and I then threw up all over a girl who was holding me up at the front entrance.  It went all over her face and down her open top.  It was great. ;D

Tech, a Shaman in Hawaii is a Kahuna I think.

KUMPAI!!! KUMPAI!!! Keith, you might have seen me at Alan's wedding, but I wasn't there. I think I was in Vegas that week. Keith, did Mark ever tell you about his spider bite experience?

No Mark hasn't called me.  Also, I thought you were with us.  Was it Sal and Wayne then.

Yea, it was more than likely Sal! Did you inform these GetBig characters that Tom Selleck owned the Bloack Orchid and sold it shortly after you puked on his best customers at the front door? YOU drove him out of town and he ain't been back since!

i've probably been drunk to the point of not remembering the next morning at least 150 times in the last year.  people would tell me that they were talking to me one night and couldn't really tell i was drunk. i would say to them tell me whatever you want, i won't remember tomorrow anyway. i am just recently making a concerted effort to control it.

Not drinking a lot does wonders for you.. You think clearer, don't feel like shit and when you do drink you enjoy it more than when you were drinking 3-4 nights a week.

Best to keep it on the weekends.

the girls here are not that good looking so drinking is the rule rather than the exception

especially now that winter is coming, the bitches are starting to get fat so drinking is MORE the rule than any other time of the year

One of those things that they say they do but actually rarely carry out.  Plenty of juicers at my gym, never seen one of them get nabbed.  Could be wrong though.  They test us who work there though.

Here, HAZ, I fixed it up a bit. Didn't you do some competitions a while back? Did you do any major drinking during your prep stages?

From the looks of that car-door it appears to be a Chevy.

Welcome, Haz. The only time I ever was on the sauce, I got the scrib from a good friend doctor (legal back then) because I was running hills and losing muscle. It was D-Bol and he said, "Don't drink while you're on this stuff!"

So I got on the stuff and sure enough one weekend I had a few too many and woke up with a major pain in my side. I quit immediately but I definitely made some good gains during that short period of my "roided" days.

Was told that you'd never have that problem with injections but I never did go that route.

Looking back, I guess I enjoyed having a few drinks on the weekends more so than a muscle assist.

I had a few friends who seemed to enjoy some serious training while intoxicated. "Testing their strength"while drunk may be a better term. Also a while back a lot of the guys liked to train while high on one drug or another. Is that still true today?

i remember some guys in the late 80s early nineties who trained while on coke.two of them are dead and the other is an ifbb pro.  i never did mind altering drugs. unless you consider opiates mind altering, though i used them more for pain management than for euphoria.

actually, i just thought about some of the WWE guys i've known and trained with. talk about polypharmacy at its extreme. most of them are dead as well, although one guy is in his 50s and laughs that he is a case study.

I was forced to quit drinking due to medical complications with my triglycerides.  I have not had a drink since july 4th and have never felt better.  I sleep better, get much more done at work and in the gym.  I have lost bodyfat and gained strength.  Not to mention the $100 a week I was spending on alcohol that I can spend on other things.

I don't miss it at all.  When I see my "drunk friends" from the bar it's like they are different people.  Maybe because I am used to seeing them drunk, but it's not the same.  Kind of sad in a way....

Cest la vie.
