For One Night, GIs in Iraq Get a Taste of Home: Football and Beer
The waiver, issued Wednesday by Gen. Ray Odierno, marks the first time all American service members in Iraq will be allowed to break the ban on liquor in combat zones without risking being court-martialed.
"Feels good to be trusted!" rejoiced Spec. Justin Roark, 23, of Little Rock, who is stationed in Baghdad. "Keeping in touch with an American tradition."
The Super Bowl, which will be held Feb. 1 in Tampa, occurs during a 40-day period of religious discipline observed by Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim community. Perhaps mindful of that, Odierno instructed commanders to "keep in mind all host nation laws and customs regarding alcohol use."
Troops in Iraq wishing to watch the game will have to stay up late. It will be 2 a.m. in Baghdad when the live broadcast starts. For that reason, the grace period will be in effect Feb. 1 and 2.
Odierno played tight end at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. The general , 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, is a huge football fan.
"No doubt about that," said his spokesman, Lt. Col. James Hutton. No doubt also about the team favored by the general, a northern New Jersey native. Added Hutton: "New York Giants, man!"
Odierno's memo didn't say what kind of beer the military will bring in; virtually all goods made available to U.S. troops are imported. Iraq is largely dry, but beer is available on the local market.
The soberly written memo didn't leave much wiggle room on a paramount issue for beer lovers: quantity. "Consumption of alcoholic beverages pursuant to this waiver is limited to two 12-ounce beers per individual," it said.
The ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones is covered by General Order No. 1, which also prohibits service members from proselytizing and having sex with Iraqis, among other proscribed activities.
Several service members said Thursday that the only other time the ban was lifted was in 2005, for troops operating under the Baghdad command.
The military in recent months has begun closing some small outposts and moving a larger percentage of its troops to large bases that have more and better amenities. Most military bases have recreation centers with large-screen TV sets and televise American shows. The Super Bowl always draws huge crowds, despite the inconvenient hour.
The only other reprieve from soberness U.S. troops in Iraq can get is a four-day excursion to the Persian Gulf state of Qatar, and not all are entitled to such trips. Service members there can have three drinks per night under close supervision.
Troops in combat zones caught drinking can face reduction in rank and pay and, in extreme cases, a court-martial.
Odierno asked commanders to "exercise discretion and good judgment in enforcing these guidelines and restrictions."
First Lt. James McGuire, 29, of Queens, who has been stationed in Mosul, in northern Iraq, for more than 11 months, said he has watched nearly every Super Bowl with his dad, throwing back beers.
"I'm Irish, sir," he said in a phone interview. "It'll be nice to have a beer and -- even if it's just for three hours -- feel like I'm back home."

there was a good column in the pittsburgh pos gazette that said since heinz field opened, there have been 7 touchdowns against the steelers with the defense being on the sidelines

But i think the big problem is going to be establishing the run game. And i think we will win the the turnover battle. with fumbles. and is it me or is our secondary (corners) playing better than they have been in a few years.
-
Ben's had several concussions now, once they start piling up they can end a career. He doesn't want to wear a different helmet that might afford more protection, don't know why. His condition and any possibly reinjury coupled with the Chargers' up and down performances adds alot of volatility to this game.

Chargers are far more dangerous than their record indicates, because the Chargers chose a mediocre coach who doesn't get the best from his teams.
Expect classic cold and wintry conditions in both Pittsburgh and NY. The storms should have passed by the morning of gametime i think.

5 - 0 doesn't mean much when some of the teams were the chiefs, raiders, broncos, and bucs
steelers are 4 - 1 beating much better teams
if the steelers lose the game, it will not be because darren sproles ran the ball well

oh I agree especially with an 11-5 team sitting home and watching, but considering the type of season we've had, (losing on the last play to carolina, and the debacle in denver) we'll take whatever we can get as far as gettin into the big dance !

E
Like what? What would you propose?
The field would have to change to a 14 team playoff format. Four division winners and three wildcards per conference. Explain to me how that would work, as far as playoff rounds.
The current format dictates that you need to win your division outright to ensure a playoff spot, regardless of season record. When you don't have control of your own playoff destiny, then the chips have to fall where they may when it comes to wildcard seedings versus teams' wins and losses. (hence the word, 'wild'.)
Simply put, win your division to control your future. Get it?

there should be a rule where .500 teams don't make the playoffs when there are teams that have won 2 - 3 games more
no team should benefit that much for having a weak division
playoffs should be for the elite

Stupid logic. If the Steelers ever won the AFC North division at 8-8, you wouldn't say shit. If the Ravens did it, I wouldn't give a flying fuck.
I think you're afraid of losing to the Chargers today and looking that much worse, if you ask me. ;D If an 8-8 team beats you today, what argument would you have about the playoffs being only for the elite?

Ha! Bullshit.
Whatever you say, Earl. However way you qualify is how you get in. PERIOD. As soon as the playoffs start, everyone's record is 0-0. However way you got there is irrelevant because you are now part of the playoff tournament. Dude, get over it. San Diego is deserving of the playoffs and they will be a tough opponent today for the Steelers.
Ask of any your Steelers players if they feel San Diego is undeserving of being in the playoffs. Instead they would answer that they expect the Chargers to give them a good challenge. Just like the last game they played.

No!
If a team wins its division, it deserves to be in the playoffs, PERIOD.
Plus, look at what's happened so far.
8-8 San Diego just KNOCKED OUT 12-4 Indy.
And, 9-7 Arizona (from the weak NFC West) just eliminated the 11-5 Atlanta Falcons and 12-4 Carolina Panthers.
Plus, lest you forget, in 2004, two 8-8 teams (St. Louis and Minnesota) advanced to the divisional round, at the expense of the champs from their respective divisions (Seattle and Green Bay).
New England Patriots didn't make it to the playoffs for two simple reasons:
1) The Patriots didn't win the AFC East (Miami did, via a tiebreaker).
2) They weren't the best wildcard; Indy was 12-4 and Baltimore had the tiebreaker on them.

the system is flawed when an 8 win team gets in over an 11 win team
teams should not be rewarded for playing in lousy divisions
it will all be a moot point when the steelers win today, but still the chargers don't belong

E
No, the system isn't flawed.
Again, there are three teams, each with at least 11 wins that are SITTING AT HOME, having lost to teams with 8 or 9 wins.
And, if the score holds, a fourth team may be joining them.
Saying that a division champion doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs is ridiculous. They did what they had to do to get to the tournament. All the football experts thought SD and Arizona would get clobbered in the first round. But Arizona is in the conference championship and San Diego is in the divisonal round.
New England doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs. They didn't win their division and they weren't the best wildcard. Do they deserve to go over 12-4 Indy? NO!
Do they deserve to go over Baltimore, who had a conference/head-to-head tiebreaker on them? NO!!
-

E
You wouldn't be? I'm happier than a pig rolling in shit right now.
The system is not flawed, Earl. It's just the way it goes in today's NFL. If the Chargers win today, do you think I'm going to bitch and whine because the Ravens have to go to San Diego? Do you think that I feel that just because the Ravens went 11-5 and the Chargers went 8-8, that the AFC Champoinship should be in Baltimore?
No, I don't feel that way at all. San Diego won their division and they deserve to host the AFC title game. The Ravens are a wildcard and the Chargers won the division. And they deserve to be in the playoffs. Again, what do you propose to solve this issue with the current playoff format. A whole lot of bitching on your part but not one solid opinion from you as to how to solve it.
-
yes i know any team that gets in the playoffs has a chance to win playoff games
only teams with winning records should be there
just because the chargers won their playoff game doesn't mean they deserve to be there, the system has to be changed
imagine an 8 -8 super bowl winning team, it would be a disgrace and would make the regular season look like a joke

And it's really obvious that you're nervous about today's game. ;D
the system is flawed, clearly the nfl is starting to feel the same because in the offseason they were considering having teams with the best record host playoff games, that would've meant wildcard teams hosting playoff games if they had a better record than a division winner
and i never denied being nervous about this game, i think the steelers will win but yeah i'm nervous
steelers are at full strength, chargers are missing LT, gates is banged up and their best receiver got a dui
steelers should win but i'm definitely nervous

have teams with 10+ victories get in over teams with .500 records
E
That doesn't solve anything. By your logic, you're saying that a wildcard team with 10+ victories derserves to go to the playoffs instead of a division winner with less victories(who in this case, happened to finish .500). There are currently six playoffs spots per conference. So basically, you're saying that New England deserved to take San Diego's spot in the playoffs, right? So that means no one wins the AFC West, right? Or do you mean that you can win your division, you just can't get a spot in the dance.
I just want to be sure that this what you're saying.......because if that's what you're saying, then you're coming of as looking really stupid right now. No need for me to stand in your way, Earl....

E
Based on what?
The Colts, Panthers, Falcons, Titans, and now the Giants all had at least 11 wins.......THEY HAVE ALL BEEN ELIMINATED!!!!
In fact, the Panthers and Giants got BEAT DOWN BY 9-win teams.
And, if I'm not mistaken, this will be the first time that a Super Bowl team will have less than 10 wins in the regular season.
NFC Championship: Eagles (9-6-1) at Cardinals (9-7)

Pretty crazy that the Arizona Cardinals will host the NFC Championship game. I think the Cardinals win this game and get to the Superbowl. What do you think about that??? :o :o :o :o :o

That consideration got shot down.
Wildcard teams don’t get precedence over division champions.
Division champs come first; then the wildcard teams. New England didn't win their division and had a either a lesser record than or lost a tiebreaker to the wildcard teams.
10+ wins don't guarantee you anything and they certainly don't prove that a teams "deserves" to be in the playoffs. Again, 5 teams that made the playoffs with at least 10 wins ARE NOW GONE, eliminated by teams that had 9 wins or less.
-

Heck, we could conceivably see two teams with single-digit wins in the regular season do battle in the Super Bowl. If San Diego makes it, look out!!!

I have to think Pittsburgh has this one in the bag playing at home but who knows what could happen.
Let's go Chargers!!!
-

NOBODY has a game in the bag. The top 2 seeds in the NFC and the top seed in the AFC are no more. Not to mention that Miami and Minnesota, who hosted the wildcard games went bye-bye.
-
Damn i could get a ticket for the Cardinals playoff against the Eagles, but the prices are insane.
I think they have a solid shot to win. Alot of the "better" teams expected to contend are already out, i don't think many expected that.

Damn i have to call tomorrow and see what i can do about getting a ticket here for the cards. :D

They have more than a solid shot to win. I have them winning by at least 10 next week. I think Warner is going to go nuts with Fitzgerald and Boldin playing in the lineup next week.

Your Steelers proved nothing of the sort. They won the game; congratulations to them. But that in no way negates what San Diego accomplished. They won their division and DEFEATED a 12-4 team, just to get to the divisional round against Pittsburgh. That proves that the Chargers belonged there.

All of those teams I listed were ELIMINATED...by teams with fewer wins than they had. And, like it or not, one of those teams (Colts) got BOUNCED by the 8-8 AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers.
And, as mentioned earlier, we had two 8-8 teams make the playoffs in 2004: St. Louis and Minnesota. Those teams WON the wildcard round (on the road, I might add) by defeating the respective champions in their divisions.
If you're the best in your division, even at 8-8, you make the playoffs, PERIOD. If you have one of the better records of wildcard teams (as was the case with the Vikings and Rams in '04), even if it's 8-8, you make the playoffs, PERIOD.

Yeah, the first game got your quarterback hurt because your coach believes in overworking his players when their playoff position was set.
Then you kicked the hell out of an 8-8 team today. You're team is making quite a statement. That fourth down fake punt in the second quarter was a joke of a call by Tomlin. Definitely an ego call on his part and he would be wise not to try that shit against the Ravens. Punt the ball next time, Tomlin.

No, it doesn't. In the regular season, you either win your division or you earn a wildcard spot.
How did St. Louis and Minnesota making the playoffs as wildcards with 8-8 records hurt the regular season?
Were they not the best two teams in the NFC of the non-division winners?
the chargers got dominated today, they didn't belong
the colts would've kept it closer
E
But, the Colts got eliminated by that same 8-8 Charger team. Saying that a 12-4 team belongs in the playoffs but the team that BEAT THEM in postseason does not is utterly ridiculous.
it is "tough shit" and that's a shame for teams like the pats
but it does make it easier for my team to advance in the playoffs 8)
E
It ain't a shame for the Pats.
Were they the best in their division? NO! Miami was (11-5 with a better conference record).
Were they the best of the wildcards? NO! Indy was 12-4 and Baltimore was 11-5 with a better conference record.
So, they don't make the playoffs, period. What San Diego's record was has no bearing. The winner of the AFC West gets a playoff spot. San Diego won the AFC West; they make the post-season.
The "weak division" argument doens't hold water. The NFC West is "weak", on paper; yet its champions, the Cardinals, are in the NFC title game, defeating the 11-5 Falcons and 12-4 Panthers in the process.
The AFC West is "weak", on paper, too; yet its champions, the Chargers, made it to the divisonal round, at the expense of a 12-4 Colts team.

-
why are we still talking about this?

E
Because you keep blubbering about the Chargers not deserving to be in the post-season, simply because they're 8-8. Or that 8-8 teams don't belong in the playoffs at all.
Regardless of record, if you win a division or are one of the best of the non-division winners, you make the postseason.
-
yeah i know, i just don't agree with it
