Title: 50 years lifting weights and bodybuilding.
Post by: Vince B on January 16, 2009, 12:17:38 AM
In January 1959 I vowed to build myself up so that no one would ever bully me. I started lifting weights in a neighbour's basement and didn't train in a gym for many years because there weren't any in Kamloops in those days. To this day I have never been in a fight as an adult. People leave musclemen alone. Even those carrying a bit of safety fat! The trick is to have a sense of humour and know when to back off.

In those days there were no internet goatboys around to deal with. I can't believe the years have gone just like that. The good thing is that the muscles still respond to training and keep growing at any age. You will eventually learn how to train effectively and efficiently. What is lacking is the motivation to want to stay big. That takes a special brain and dedication. Good luck to anyone who is committed to this sport. When you get older you will find that the body tends to fall apart little by little. You will need to wear glasses at about 50 to read small print. Your hair thins and you start getting lines of character. If you keep your muscles growing you will keep looking young. Other than choosing the right parents, you will have to wait and see what your fate is.

I doubt many of you will still be on Getbig when you are 66. Remember one thing, these are still the good old days! Some of you will have gone through 1000 gimmick accounts by then!

I can't tell you what an honour it is to associate with dudes called Samourai Pizzacat and Ironneck. The flotsam are well represented here. One of the marvels of Getbig is to see the new handles appearing daily!

I don't see why some think calling someone old is a putdown. We all age but hopefully some don't get old.

In January 1959 I vowed to build myself up so that no one would ever bully me.

Well Vince, the only thing that has changed is the bullying method: nowdays 'the weeds of humanity' are cyber-bullying the 'healthy plants'.
Hell, who ever thought in 1959, 50 years hence a person could be harassed by people on "forums" from anywhere on the planet within seconds?

So many kamikaze bodybuilders with no life outside of bodybuilding have their tunnel vision "go hard, go heavy and drop dead by 50" lifestyle that is the modern day bodybuilding underground "scene".

He didn't write that.  He was quoting Def Leoppard, who stole it from the inexplicably successful Neil Young.

Bob has done well for himself through bodybuilding but sold his soul to achieve his ends. I won't do that and never have.

No, I don't respect the IFBB and haven't for a very long time. The organization is self-serving, full of yes-men, and doesn't respect the bodybuilders. It could have done a lot but lost its way long ago. Poor Ben had to take his ideals to his grave because he never saw many achieved. When bodybuilding is a healthy pursuit then the sport will have public support. Until then it is sham and those running professional bodybuilding are hypocrites and are harming the sport no end.  We await the fate of todays heroes, most of whom cannot make a living from what they love most.

I'm not trying to put you down but the fact that you are willing to prostitute you integrity for financial confort within the IFBB fiefdom makes you look less than Vince.

You were a better bodybuilder and that's where it ends for you and him .

Say it ain't so, Joe!  :(

On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

After two days in the desert sun my skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

After nine days I let the horse run free 'cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

Haha.  Ok, I admit I don't know much Young on his own.  I heard his new one on the radio the other day (he's in Aus, I think) and I've been itching to burn him at the stake ever since.  But I digress.

Hit me with a couple titles and I'll look into it.  Open mind, promise.  Anything to avoid having to re-examine the intricacies of the Code Duello 1777.

Really? Just what integrity do you think I've "prostituted"....specifically.

BTW....your quote is spot on...."What he THINKS is unjust"....who gives a fuck what he thinks, he's talking out of his ass and has no idea what goes on in the IFBB....and hasn't been able to answer one single question thats been thrown back at him.

Lets see if you can have any better response than Basile....by all means, feel free to site specifics for what you reference or base your opinion on.

You old bastard, no one up here wants to hear about the good old days because the majority of us are not old enough to have "good old days"

Seriously why does your stories start off like this, whether its 1959, Larry Scott, John Grimek, etc???  You realize that this stuff needs to be placed on ironage or something.

Hmm. Dude's in the R&R HOF 3x, so there must be something there, I figure. I'll just give you a heads-up on his solo stuff (although it would be criminal not to look up the Buffalo Springfield & CSNY stuff). Rust Never Sleeps is hard, edgy stuff. The Weld set has some hard, excellent live stuff, too, like the long version of Rockin' in the Free World. If you want the best of his early stuff, hit up Tonight's the Night, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, On the Beach and After the Goldrush. If you want the crash course, grab the Decade set, but you'll be missing stuff.

/glad we avoided the duel, bro. i'm a little rusty with my pacing and turning. probably put a musket ball in my foot.

Why in the world would you still be concerned about trying to be muscular and if board members have gimmick accounts.  At your age you should be planning retirement, golfing, fishing, driving a corvette, vacationing in Boca and spending time with your grandkids etc.  Not starting internet battles with high school kids.

You know, folks, bodybuilders have been stereotyped as being all brawn. Chick fits that description perfectly. The guy has no idea that he is a bit thick. He is the kind of guy who people get to collect debts, marshall competitors, and generally be the assistant to the manager.

I mean, why on earth would a representative of the IFBB come on an internet discussion board to discredit a former IFBB national champion? The guy has an agenda and feels elated when the flotsam applause his bullying. The guy has no shame at all and that is why the IFBB use him. If he wants to find out who was in various past contests all he has to do is visit the archives in Joe's office. It is all there in Muscle Builder 1971 and Ironman 1971. I think it is despicable that Chick would stoop to discrediting a champion by implying no one competed against him. Sure, this is Getbig and guys can bullshit all day long and most do. The flotsam sit and clap but cannot win even a local bodybuilding contest.

News flash! Getbig members could care less about getting oiled up and putting on a thong just to prance around in front of old sickos like yourself.

Stop trying to find validity in your life by bragging on the internet about how many times you put on a thong and pranced around homos. No one here gives two shits about that kind of stuff, or you for that matter.

Some of you will have gone through 1000 gimmick accounts by then!

well, I think it's pretty cool that Bob posts on here, and actually not in the "high class, high caliber language"
but gets his hands dirty once in a while like the rest of us, Bob Chick is a cool dude.
this one is for you vince, learn from the man and have some fun.

Hey, Bob, this is Getbig. Some of us like to have a bit of fun. You join Goodrum who Googled my name and 'discovered' I was a plumber in New Zealand. I mean, who am I to challenge the likes of you and Vince G CSN MFT. If he says something then it must be true. Chuck Sipes put on a strongman performance and there were 13 judges, including Chuck for the 1970 contest in Vancouver.

Hey, Goatboy, where have you been? You are the epitome of the Getbig nobodies. You have done bugger all in the Iron Game and hide behind a pathetic gimmick. There is a reward for anyone who can take a photo of you with their foot on your head!

I'm on it!

We started lifting weights to make sure no one bullied us and I have never been bullied. The internet is pathetic when so many hide behind crap names and use gimmick accounts.

That's one of the problems with the IFBB.  They don't care about their image.  No other sanctioning body would grant a sanction to put on a show if it didn't follow certain criteria.  The IFBB will grant a show to anyone if they pay the money.  Who cares if the show takes place or not.  As long as the IFBB gets their money.  That is just one other reason why BB has a black eye.

Well Vince, show us some pictures from the 1970 Mr Canada show with you in comparison with an actual competitor.

At the very least, how many people did you compete against in your class???  How many people were actually in the show???

The only picture is you with a bunch of cut-out paper letters of the IFBB hanging over your head???

50 years of lifting weights, you certainly have a bit more than "safety fat."

Ha, ha, Melvin is still going on about the plumber thing. What a tool. That is what makes this forum entertaining. The lads even know about safety fat and flotsam so I am part of the scene here. I even posted an answer to a pm about Melvin.

The only mystery is how come Chick doesn't know he is a stooge and patsy. That guy is thick. He actually tries to convince the pros he is acting on their behalf. Yeah, sure. Milos is still blamed for the debacle in that contest. Lee got two years out instead of one. Chick is the apologist for the IFBB and athletes' rep my ass.

I should have posted this story on the positive board. What was I thinking?

Another clueless post on things you know nothing about....same old same old, Basile....

Once again...no fool like an old fool

Bob, you are good at putdowns. I wouldn't call them putdowns but crass and offensive behaviour. Lots of people are defensive and bitter and strike out at others. I hope you are happily married and not being bossed around at home. Giving up the single lifestyle must be difficult for a handsome bloke like you. There must be women around the world who miss your company.

Well, don't take it out on the anyone who draws attention to your asskissing re the officials of the IFBB and the company you work for. You have to pay your mortgage and so on. We allow that. What we don't accept is how you side with the IFBB against the athletes like Lee Priest. You are doing bugger all about the lack of testing for dangerous drugs used in this sport. Shame on you, Bob, because you are nothing but a lackey. You are a footsoldier and will never lead anything in this sport.

Excellent observations, Basile.....

I don't get paid by the IFBB, nor for being the athletes rep....so much for that theory.

As for Priest, feel free to ask Lee himself, who went to bat, wrote his letter requesting reinstatement, and helped get him back in.....

Concerning the "dangerous drugs" used in this sport.....their just as dangerous as when YOU were using them...hypocrite.

How pathetic, Bob. In 1970 the IFBB didn't have any rules about anabolic steroids and other drugs. I used 2 Dianabol pills for about 3 months. Compare that with your drug protocol. You can't post what you took, can you? You are more than a hypocrite. You are just outright nasty and bitter.

Rusty Jeffers looked way better than you did in that contest for bodybuilding seniors. End of story. Your opinion as winner counts for zero. Hope you realize this.

We all followed your asskissing re the Lee Priest affair. You did nothing whatever for him. You had a vote re his situation so why not reveal what you voted for? That would be enlightening. Nope, you did nothing but yap on Getbig about how much you are doing. For Christ sake stop the bullshit. The IFBB doesn't let any of the pros speak out. You know it. You are the biggest fake ever to post on Getbig. You claim to be the good guy but have sided with the IFBB without exception. Oh, you come up with crumbs to help the athletes but the big stuff you sweep under the too-hard carpet.

LOL...Goddam Basile...you cant possibly make yourself look and dumber if you tried.

You took drugs to win, just like they do now...no different. If you had the same stuff available back then, you would have used it as well. No one buys your bullshit "2 D-ball tabs for a few months" story....

My opinion was irrelevant to the show I won....the judges opinions were what counted...Rusty was 8th, I won the show...end of story. He wasnt close to me, and has lost to me EVERY time we have competed against eack other. There is a reason anyone who was there had me winning easily...That said....at least I beat other people to win my title.

As I said....ask Lee.

My record speaks for itself as to whose "side" im on, and whose rights I fight for...I'll remind you, I'm the ONLY one to ever try and start a union for the athletes...EVER.

Stick to what you do best, fool...chase fat chicks and cruise around the local high schools in your white van.

Gotta love the way Chick tries to save his sorry ass by suggesting that my Dianabol use was the same as what the tools use today. Nope, not even close. I can state what I did. Can Chick fess up? Listen to him boast about how he was the best man there. The only time Chick will be the best man is if he is invited to be one for a mate at a wedding!

So what if I was the only competitor in the 1970 Mr Canada contest? I won fair and square and that is the end of the story. It was the shortest contest in the history of the sport. My thanks to Ray Beck for promoting the contest in Vancouver so the guys from Eastern Canada wouldn't be there.

When you get older you will find that the body tends to fall apart little by little. You will need to wear glasses at about 50 to read small print. Your hair thins and you start getting lines of character.

When you are 10-14 years, who do you pick on in school? The tiny kid or the one dwarfing you? Classic psychology.

Yes, back then they judged more on the physical size of your body to determine the degree to which you were a physical threat.
