Did anyone else go to Circuit City yesterday or today? The company is going out of business and they are liquidating everything! As of yesterday, most things (big ticket electronics, memory cards/sticks, etc) were 10% off.
CDs and DVDs were 20% off. Cables were 30% off. They will continue to raise the percent off until everything is sold. But the longer you wait the fewer items will be on the store shelves.
I went to two CC stores yesterday. The first had a huge line outside (100+ people) and they were letting people in little by little. The second store had no line, but things were flying off the shelves.
I bought a new flatscreen TV, a DVD player, and a memory card for my digital camera.
If you want a new digital camera this is an excellent time to buy. They have a huge inventory of makes and models. Digital cameras today are small, compact, have 8 megapixels –-some for well under $100 and most can even film movies in addition to taking photos. I almost wish I needed a new camera. Hell, I may go back and buy one anyway. Just think of all the great pix you could take at your next bodybuilding show/expo (see this thread is related to bodybuilding after all). :D

It's good to see something positive come out of the loss of 34,000 jobs :D

If you are serious about getting a digital camera (at any price point) and need some reviews, info, or education check out the "Reviews/Previews" and "Camera Database" tabs at http://dpreview.com/
I used this website when I bought my camera years ago and it was very helpful. They even have information/reviews on old discontinued cameras.

Remember, you don't need more than problaby 6 megapixels for most uses!
A Nikon D40 is a great start.

True, but when is the last time you bought a camera? These days, it is hard to find a new camera that has fewer than 7 megapixels. 8 megapixels is the standard in even the cheapest cameras now. 10 megapixels is considered an upgrade or high end.

Lots of shit was supposedly 70% off but it looked like it was the same price as other stores. They just said MRSP was XXXX and made the sale price to be some fantastic deal. I'm going to check out the other Circuit City when I get back in town.

went there last night to find out what the status of my TV warranty was going to be and there were a decent amount of people but the store wasn't really packed, the guy there said that 10 percent on tv's was as low as they were going to go and if they didn't sell them they were going to sell them at auction to other businesses, he said that particular store was closing in March.

I've been tracking the Samsung LN52A650 for about a year. Started around 3 grand, I figured I'd buy it when it got to around 1,700.
Online retailers currently carry it for $1850-$2000. I've seen it at Circuit City for as low a $2,000 in the past.
Yesterday, I went in and TVs were 10% off original prices. The only one they had was the floor model at an additional 10% off. The trouble is, the list the original at $2,499 so the two 10%s off make it $2,000 for a floor model.
I didn't see many good deals that couldn't be beat online, and that includes shipping.

the douchebag at the store was trying to be tough about the price not dropping any further but he's full of shit, wait until March and the prices will be down by another 25-30 percent.

The reality is nothing is 70% off yet. As I said, right now the stuff you really want (electronics) is 10% off. Over the next few weeks, they will increase to 20%, then 30% then 40% etc. to move merchandise. If you wait for 70% off, everything you want will be gone. In effect, the store is making customers play "chicken" with each other; this is typical for stores that go out of business. Linens & Things did the same thing last year as they were going out of business.
People will settle for a smaller discount (10% or 20%) on things they really want because we know that the longer you wait for a deeper discount the fewer things will be available.

I didn't go there expecting to find a great deal anyway. I was just headed to get sushi and the big fliers caught my attention. I heard about CC in the news but doubted that anything, especially their TVs and good digital SLR cameras were actually 70% off.
-
Did a drive-by, but my new Samsung was priced cheaper at Fry's, so I got it there.
Plus, I got to play Rock Band 2 on the Wii with my friend. ;D

like he said if you're waiting for 70% off you aren't going to find anything, everything will be gone by then, it's just human nature, people hear "Going out of business sale" and they flock to the stores in droves.

You are nothing more than the result of right wing propaganda indoctrination.

Pretty much how it went in Phoenix....I kept checking back at the three stores that were here. Got to the point where things were 40% off. That may seem great but when you look at what you can get online versus the stuff at the store the savings arent that great. Plus, order online...not only will it be insured...but paying with credit card doubles the warranty from the manufacturer.
check out bensbargains.net for some decent coupon codes for online retailers/wholesalers.

10% off was the deals, and off regular price items, they weren't good deals at all. We walked around, looked for items, and left. I get better deals via coupons and sales items from Costco, Office Depot and other places. Just be patient and via the mail or online, the deals will come.
However, that being said, Circuit City in Woodland Hills was very busy, with the line to checkout close to 20 people long, and a lot of traffic. People were buying things, even at 10% off.
They said that this week will be 10%, next week 20%, week after that 30% and so on, until everything is done. I expect this store to be out of items in about 4 weeks or so.

Yesterday, I went from a twenty five year old 14" CRT TV in my bedroom to a 26" HDTV and I'm loving it! Plus I got a cheap DVD player to go with it! :D

Congrats on the upgrade.

I was against the bailout from the beginning and I made that clear. But again, thats NOTHING compared to what Obama is proposing.
You are more out of touch than Bush is...Bush came into the presidency with TRILLIONS of dollars of surplus and within the eight years he was in the white house he is now leaving america 11.5 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt...At least 5 to 10 million jobs lost...two wars going on that have cost 4 Trillion at this point...has caused international outrage at americas foreign policies, support of that god awful israel and the slaughter of Millions in Iraq and Afghanistan...ARE YOU RETARDED OR SOMETHING...So far as Obama goes..the guy has done nothing yet and officially is NOT in the white house so all of this jaw flapping you are doing in his regard is without merit or support. At least the Obama wants to do things to help the country from the ASSHOLES that have fucked america up.... The BAILOUT has cost 8 TRILLION already..do the math and add up all of the bailouts that have been done up until now and it rings in at an astounding 8 TRILLION DOLLARS. Thisis on top of the already mentioned debt Bsh caused. DAMN you asshole are too much...how do you managed to wipe your asses after a shit. If your tiny brains can't comprehand small things, then the grander things are out of the question. Just know this...if Obama's plan can't get america going again....PREPARE TO STAND ON A SOUP LINE FOR YOUR RATIONS VERY SOON....and you can thank Bush for that.....

Ok, I know absolutely nothing about digiatal cameras except that ours got wet and is dead. What do you reccommend for a decent family use one I can grab during this sale ?
thanks

LOL It’s not as bad as it sounds. We have four TVs in the house; two of them are old CRT. Obviously, I was in no hurry to replace them but if I saw a good buy I would upgrade. Yesterday, I saw a good buy—for one of the TVs. So that’s one down and one to go. :D

Almost any camera you find in the store will be 8 mega pixels. The things you need to think about now are price, size, and form factor. I would get one of these.

You might wanna consider going all the way with a DSLR instead of a compact. Much more fun and better pictures.
Most medium/high end compacts are in the price range of cheaper DSLR's anyway.

Yep. I saw them for sale in both the stores I went to. Games too.

LOL.
Was that number common knowledge or something? I read it on CNN. Of course, layoffs were obvious. Was the number at 30,000 obvious?
-
If you saw it on CNN it's safe to assume many other people have seen it as well.
Over the last month, the number has alternately been reported as 30K, 33K, and 35K. Even when I bought my TV a store employee told me the number was 34K. All are estimates of course. The point is virtually all employees are being let go. It's sad, sure, but no more sad than all the other employees that are being let go at other stores like Linen & Things, Sharper Image, the auto companies, financial services, etc. :-\

Price is not right for many shoppers at Circuit City closeout sale
Customers are angry that many items are being discounted only 10%. Liquidators say markdowns will increase in coming weeks.
By Andrea Chang
January 20, 2009
Many irate Circuit City shoppers discovered the hard way this weekend that going-out-of-business sales don't always mean bargain-basement prices.
Tensions have been running high at many of the chain's 567 U.S. stores after the electronics retailer announced Friday that it was ceasing operations and would begin liquidation sales the next day.
The news that all merchandise would be discounted 10% to 30% drew throngs of customers to stores across the nation over the three-day weekend. But many shoppers left angry and empty-handed.
"What happened to 30%? Lies!" shouted customer Gabriel Ifrah, 52, at the Circuit City on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles on Monday, where most items were priced at 10% off.
Another customer, Bob McGinness, 48, said he had come to the store three times since Friday but hadn't found any good deals.
"I've been waiting in line for half an hour each day based on employees' promises that prices could come down, but they haven't," said McGinness, a TV commercial producer from Los Angeles. "It's very disappointing."
It is too early to know when prices will fall to jaw-dropping levels at the nation's second-largest consumer electronics chain. Liquidators said discounts would increase each week as inventory levels shrank and some could reach as much as 90% in the final days.
Closeout sales are commonplace in today's weak economy, but liquidation pricing and procedures often leave customers feeling frustrated. Several Times readers wrote in e-mails and blog comments that they were being "scammed."
Some of the confusion stemmed from Circuit City's abrupt collapse, which left liquidators scrambling to begin sales the next day. The Circuit City closeout is one of the biggest retail liquidations ever to take place in the U.S., experts said, with more than $1 billion worth of inventory to move by the end of March.
Like many large retailers, Circuit City appointed a group of professional liquidators to run its going-out-of-business sales, which includes setting sale prices. The company's liquidated assets will be used to pay off its creditors.
At Circuit City stores Monday, most big-ticket items were marked down only 10%, including digital cameras, large flat-screen televisions, printers and cordless phones. Less pricey items, such as wiring, video games and video game accessories, were priced at 20% or 30% off.
"You have to start somewhere, and we have commitments to a lot of people -- banks, creditors -- who are expecting a certain amount of return, so it's not like we can go out there and go to the deepest discounts right off the bat," said Billy Nichols, senior vice president and director of merchandising at Great American Group, one of four liquidators involved in Circuit City's closeout. "This is a big financial risk for a lot of companies. We have to be economical on our discounts."
Shoppers said they worried that the liquidation companies were offering markdowns from prices that were higher than what Circuit City had been charging. But liquidators insisted that prices were not being inflated.
"We are absolutely not raising the price that Circuit City has in the system," said Dan Kane, a principal at Tiger Capital Group, another Circuit City liquidator. "It's not possible. The Circuit City everyday low price is what we're offering our discounts off of."
Nonetheless, retail experts said customers should be savvy when shopping at going-out-of-business sales. A chain's usual policies often don't apply once a company collapses because liquidation companies have the authority to implement their own rules.
At Circuit City, for instance, all sales are final during the liquidation process, meaning returns and exchanges are not allowed. The chain is no longer honoring its usual price-matching policy or offering home theater installation services.
Although liquidators said prices would become lower in the coming weeks, some customers said they might not be back.
"I was looking for a printer, but 10% off -- I can do better online," said Alan Silverman, 61, at the L.A. Circuit City store. "It's not like I expect them to give it away, but I would expect to see more attractive prices that are competitive."
Jim Schaye, chief executive of Hudson Capital Partners, another Circuit City liquidator, said although "10% may not sound like a lot," it was still better than the prices found at many of the chain's rivals.
"Customers who say 10% isn't enough for me, they're free to walk out and come back when the discounts are greater," he said. "If they're lucky, the merchandise will still be there."
-
Fair enough. But you didn't need to be a smartass about it, initially.
-
I went today, pick up a harmony remote and few blu-ray movies.
-
Some nice
steals deals
-
I don't want to "support" a company that is going under. Even if it means saving a few dollars. I prefer to spend money where the company is good for the economy by keeping people employed, etc...
-
If you read the signs carefully it says "up to" 30%. The cables and tv mounts are discounted 30% .
