$15/hr. At my old job which was a factory with around 90 employees, they had pay grades/scales. All of the hourly rates were listed by there name, even the engineer and owners.

Companies have valid reasons for the information being confidential. "Suze" (anybody that goes on Oprah, for that matter) is full of shit.
Of course, the top 5 salaries of all publicly traded companies are a matter of public record; the info is listed in the shareholders' report and is available to anyone. But I have no business knowing what my coworker and/or immediate supervisor earns. Just causes problems.

I'm surprised at the brutal honesty. I figure people will be spouting off gh15 type numbers. As for me, putting my UCLA math/applied science education to work I work two jobs at barely over minimum wage,
have a big "L" tattooed to my forehead, live in a room that resembles a Mexican dentention cell, I pick chicken bones out of the trash at the local KFC in which I boil into a lovely gruel. I also keep a hang man's rope at the ready for when I can afford a stool to stand on.

Its pounds, but i live at home. I just graduated a few months ago. I dont have many etravagant expenses at all. I dont pay rent etc or contribute to house so all money is mine.

Suze is right. Knowing what the salary ranges are for your peers and superiors is very handy information, especially when you get a raise...I would've lost almost 10k during my last promotion if I didn't know they were trying to low ball me...
Oh and these salary discussions are relatively useless unless COL is factored into the equation...

I do agree about COL, too. I just lowered my former spouse's child support payments and she started crying the blues. But she refuses to move to a less costly area...she has her reasons, all of them selfish and without an eye on the bottom line. Without any retirement plan in place aside from the little IRA I set up for her (that I stopped funding when she asked me to move out), I have no idea how she's planning to live in the future. Being 25-30 and poor was no problem. I could not imagine being 65 and poor, though...that's not the life anyone should strive for.
So, if we're still in Cali 12 years from now, I'll be moving as soon as the kid graduates. I can't assume that she'll go to school back east, but either way, I'm moving.

Yes there is. New York is a dump for the most part and it's very dirty. Both cities offer a different vibe. NYC has extreme wealth or extreme poverty and much higher crime rate. There is a lot of money in Boston, and it's spread out more evenly. Sure, some of the richest people in the world live in NYC, but that population is small compared to the massive poor population of the city. NYC has the Hampton's....Boston has the Cape and the islands. I lived in NYC for a year and I didn't like it. I prefer Boston and Chicago. Also Boston is very close to great skiing and I love to ski and snowboard. Can't be the hundreds of miles on NE beaches also.
Being a Chef I can see why you would like NYC more. The foodie scene is x10 times better than Boston's.

The waves suck and they don't even have good drugs there. Marthas vineyard is a toilet bowl. Long Island , the five bureaus, Upstate NY (Canada), are nothing at all like Manhattan. were you in the outer boroughs? queens, bronx -- flatbush, maybe? then i could understand. if you lived anywhere in manhattan (harlem and spanish harlem included), or in the closer BK areas (the slope, williamsburg, greenpoint), you shoulda had a good time.

My salary has plummetted thanks to the god dam economy. I was doing contracts for large companies ranging from $7,000 to $10,000 a month. With businesses tightening up now, no one wants to use me for shit, so I had to get a crappy blue collar job not even paying half that :(

I have been to NYC many times, and as I said I lived there. I have been shown around by several club owners....and I know how fun it is. Aside from great food and a great nightlife......NYC is not that great of a city. It's dirty, the crime rate is high, and it's a pain in the ass to get around. It's great if you are a chef or a person that does not value driving five minutes to the beach, but I do : )

In regards to what? Dining and Nightlife? That is true. Certainly not, Hospitals, Colleges, Schools, Cleanliness, Public transportation, Outdoor activities, crime rates, proximity to the ocean and median income. In NYC, you are either really rich or really poor. There is a lot of money in Boston and the city is far cleaner and safer than NYC. Boston has a pretty good nightlife and an exploding resteraunt scene currently. It's not anything close to what NYC has, but thats not important to me. Also, unlike NYC metro Boston has no bad areas within the major metropolitan city. There is no walking in and out of bad areas sandwitched between the good areas in Boston.
NYC is much larger than Boston, and there is so much more to do, but once you get over that (imo) it's really not that great of a place to live. Having lived in both places (and not just visited), that is my personnel opinion. Everyone is different. I value cleanliness, the ability to walk the whole city and close proximity to beach and skiing. I have been to the hamptons, and they offer nothing that the Cape and the Islands cannot provide.

Yes, him and his wife are very cool. My son and I moved there about 5-6 years ago after my divorce. The rent was good. We since baught the place.

There are days when I'd prefer a lifestyle like that, something nice and steady and reliable.
But then when I look at what I actually do for a living, I can't help but think to myself how lucky I am.
"I can't believe I actually get paid to do this" is a thought I have a least a few times per week.

NYC is just dirty because the population is so high. Boston has the Cape? The highest Gay community in America. I lived on Nantucket for two summers. The waves suck and they don't even have good drugs there. Marthas vineyard is a toilet bowl. Long Island , the five bureaus, Upstate NY (Canada), are nothing at all like Manhattan. Unlike NYC which (other than great food, shopping and a great nightlife - if you don't get robbed on the way) is a total cesspool. The vast majority of NYC's population is poor.
