i went on ebay, found a store, and got a refurbished Dell optiplex. Loaded better than my last computer, with XP, office, etc... the entire thing was 399. I couldn't be happier. I don't know the store offhand, but I can look it up for you if you're interested.

Hey GetBiggers,
If anyone knows anything about computers, please give me some tips on what to get for my next desktop purchase. Which brand is the best? Is it better to build it yourself? Specs? Etc.?
I've been wanting to upgrade, but I don't know what to get. I want something very high speed and top of the line. Price range would probably be $3000 and below.
Thanks

these are your two best bets. You probably want to get a computer with a dual core processor. At very minimum 2 gb of ram. I would say at bare minimum a 300gb harddrive and a 19" monitor.

the iMac is available as a 20" or 24" screen! Visit your local Apple store to see it in person (but configure/order it online). Whatever memory or screen size you choose, I recommend a 500gb hard drive as a minimum. A wireless keyboard and mouse is an option. You will not be disappointed! :D

DAmn 3k?
If you build your own comp you could get one HELL of a computer for 3k.
-
If you've got 3K to throw around, I agree with Bay. I have an old low end 17" IMac and it runs better than ANY PC I've ever owned. For $3000 you can get a new 20" with great specs.
If you need Windows you can run it on an iMac through boot camp.
-
Dont get a fucking Mac.
Get a normal computer with windows on it. Windows PROFESSIONAL NOOOOT Vista.
And install firefox right away. And AVG anti virus.
-
Do not, I repeat - DO NOT - get a Dell, if you are looking for a decent computer.
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
Go there and spend about $1200 or so configuring your own.
You can get a brand-new 24" iMac for about $1500-1600, so you could conceivably have both systems, if you wanted. Agreed on getting a Windows platform installed on it as well.
The only advice - other than avoiding Dell - that you really need, however, is to stay away from Windows Vista. If your PC comes delivered with Vista instead of Windows XP, you may as well throw the machine in the dumpster.

Tre, I'm not a computer guy...is there a difference between Vista that is on laptops and on desktop's? My laptop has been great...my desktop...not so much.

Vista mainly depends on how much RAM you have installed on it.
But overall vista sucks so much its not even funny.

Exactly. It's on both....laptop is operating fine. Desktop has all kinds of problems.

I double-checked - seller was 199computerstore
I know, it's a refurb Dell. But for someone who spends 12-14 hours per day parked on this thing, it was a complete steal. XP with dvd burner, 2.8g processor, 3 gig of ram, and office. I just couldn't be happer for only 400 bucks

Stay away from Alienware. If Dell is actually doing more for their quality control and customer service then u might be alright. I've seen both a laptop and desk top disaster with these guys. It depends what u need it for. I have a Dell XPS and the hard drive died 1 month after I had it. Dell shipped a new one that day and I was up and running in 4 days. I bought a 1 T-bit drive and have the 700 gig as the primary. I don't store alot of crap on my comp but things break. For 3 grand u could atleast design ur own online. Try these guys.

It's a resource hog, regardless of whether it's on a desktop or laptop.
Some of the other nagging problems with Vista include the fact that it now takes more mouse-clicks or keystrokes to do simple tasks - like bringing up the Task Manager - than XP did. Navigating the desktop and file folders requires more clicks now and over time, those few clicks here and there really add up.
How many years did you use XP before switching to Vista?

Wow, its like no one even looked at what I put here. For 500 dollars you can get a computer that beats the shit out of anything thats been posted....here are the stats...

Dell has always used sub-standard parts in their machines, which is why they're so cheap and easy for them to replace.
In my line of work, though, I need reliable machines and the Dells just don't fit the bill.
Careful with your configuration on Ibuypower...good company, but as recently as about a year ago, it was up to you to be certain that the internal parts you ordered were compatible with one another. If you weren't getting an OS installed with your purchase, they might not have discovered that the machine would not work properly.

Come on now dude. We are talking about a quad core processor. 1.8ghz quad core is much faster than a non quad/dual core 3 ghz.
-
I recently changed over to Fios and unless I'm somewhat close to the wireless setup(whatever it's called) my computer runs slow. If I'm in the same room, it's extremely fast. This is in contrast to when I had the Linksys wireless system. I've heard you can combine the Linksys to the Fios to increase power. Anyone know anything about this? Any other suggestions, like maybe placement of the wireless tower, etc.?
-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227126
this one looks a little better, but the price went up about double
Of course the price is double, but lets be realistic. Who here needs a 3ghz processor? Does anyone here know the advantages to quad core?
-
what are they? Greater multitasking?
Well first off, a lot of companies are now beginning to make programming catering towards dual core/socket processors. Each core operates independently of the other, meaning 2 programs can be split up over 2 cores as opposed to having 2 programs split between one core.

Mac is the only way to go ;D

if we have our acronyms right, Fios is how your internet and cable tv get to your house. The fiber optic cable is a replacement for the coax cable you use to have. Your Fios provider (Verizon?) then gave you a modem or router that had WiFi. There are numerous wifi standards, 802.11b, 802.11g, and soon 802.11n, each a little faster than the previous. Odds are Verizon gave you a cheap 802.11b. thats why it has a limited range and is slower the further away you are.
if you want really fast internet, plug your computer directly into the Fios modem using a CAT-5 cable (has oversized phone jacks). or you could plug a faster wifi into the Fios modem.
But please, please, everyone go check their wifi and make sure it's password protected. and never never enter your cc number or bank password into a computer that is on an unencrypted (no password) wifi, such as at a coffee shop or the wifi you're steeling from your neighbor who was too dumb to put a password on it.

Mac is the only way to go ;D
Agreed. It can run OS X and it can be configured to run Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7). If you want to "build your own computer" or tinker with what is under the hood of your computer then Macs are not for you. However, if you want a powerful OS, superior display technology, and an all around seamless computing experience that lets you focus on why you are using the computer (your task) rather than focus on the computer itself then it doesn't get any better than a Mac.
The integration of the iLife applications alone makes a Mac the best choice for most people.
• iTunes for managing CDs and music (syncing with ipods)
• iPhoto for managing photos and linking with your digital camera
• iMovie for managing home movies and syncing with your camcorder
• iDVD for... oh hell... read all about them here http://www.apple.com/ilife/ They all come with the Mac and work right out of the box.
This is the Mac under my desk and I love it! http://www.apple.com/macpro/design.html
It costs more than most people would want to spend though; for most people (who don't already own a big monitor) an iMac will do just fine. ;)
-
People who prefer MAC is the same people that think Peter Putnam is better the Coleman.

Thank you very much. I'll check with Verizon to see if I have a choice of a better wifi. Plugging into the modem defeats the purchase of my laptop but thanks for the info. Thanks for your time.

Tim if someone wants to crack your wifi, regardless of what encrypt your using, its not hard.

Personally I would bide your time and wait for Windows 7 to come out. The beta version has had a lot of positive comments.
Vista is utter shite and I can hardly wait for the day when I get rid of it.

it depends of your use...
for 1300 (CDN) bucks i got this:
e8400 c2d @ 3.0 Ghz easely overclocked at 3.6 with stock air cooling
asus p5ql pro
3 gig of high quality ram
ati 3850/3870 512 mb.
win xp pro
19 inches samsung synchmaster wide
dvd/cd burner
with this you can work ,watch div x dvd, edit photo, music ,sound, video webpages and play current games at 1440*900 with total fluidity and smoothness.
Find a shop that will build it for you.
oh and DONT BUY A MAC ,macs are for noobs ,women, homos, and if you only need a computer for work and some soft editing, a laptop is sufficient.

Not really dude, a lot of programs are being coded with dual/quad cores in mind. They are more efficient at running more than one thing at a time. I mean honestly who uses the internet and nothing else?
Sounds like you have a nice computer bro. I built mine last black friday for 500 and I got 8gb of ram, 3.0 ghz quad core...its is beautiful.

99,9% of people who own a computer ? doing some excel word or powerpoint or any management software doesnt require much power from the cpu nor gfx card nor a big amount of ram either.
That's why most pre assembled computers in offices just have a decent CPU and screen with all the rest of the computer being pure crap. But that's enough for pure office use.
Most people who own a computer at home only surf and do some clerical work, sometime watch a DVD or div x, but you could do that with a pentium 500mhz from 1998 ...
Fact is you only need an homogeneous computer with a complete set of powerful parts (huge cpu that is dedicaced to manage huge and complicated loads of tasks, gfx card, ram, fast harddrive) if you play video games and do video editing.
Even webeiditing and sound editing doesnt require powerful computers, only an average main CPU.
Also, put aside profesional sound or video editing softwares, and video games, most applications arent even coded to take benefit fromt he use of multiple cores and the last technolgies embeded in the newly released CPUs.
Sounds like you have a nice computer bro. I built mine last black friday for 500 and I got 8gb of ram, 3.0 ghz quad core...its is beautiful.
ordered it 4 months ago, i bet it's even cheaper to build the exact same computer right now. Keep in mind i ve been into computers and web programming since 1995 ...that's why i know that the most important thing before building/buying a computer is to know what it will be intended for. This way you know what is required, and what is not, thus being able to pay exactly the amount of money required for your use.
-
Did you see the computer I recommended for him? It's a dual core, but its only 1.8 ghz, which is plenty. This guy is on the internet asking other people what to get. If he needed a nice computer he would know it and probably know what he needed. I think 500 dollars for a computer is a good deal, especially for the computer I linked.
-
I agree 500 is a good price for a decent computer. I am looking for something I can play video games on as well, such as WOW if I wanted to. Or, if in the future, more complex games come out, then the computer can still handle it. I don't want to have to upgrade again very soon.
I appreciate hte help thouhg.
you aint going to play any videogame decently if your system specs are below this:
INTEL C2D 3.0 mini (AMD athlon wether they re dual or quad cores are crap compared to intel current cpus)
ATI 3850 512 mb (NVIDIA gfx cards are more expensive and slightly less efficient right at the moment than ATI)
2 gig of ram (800 mhz mini)
7200 trs/ min SATA 2 harddrive
400 watts powersupply
20 inches max lcd wide screen.

you obviously have absolutely no clue about computers. Absolutely all components of the computer in this link are way below the specs needed to run even a pretty old game like WOW in decent conditions.

I said everything that needed to be said about what you have to do to get a good computer depending of the use you re going to make of it.

I agree there is a great deal of advantages of getting a high-end system and building it yourself. I have done that in the past. However, for me, I prefer something simple and hard-working and very cheap. I currently have three computers running in my office at once, and 2 more in the house for others. For me, the call was simple. Three very good computers @ 400 each beats out a reallllly nice machine for $1200 or $1500.
I have an A+ certification and did build systems for a living at one time while working as a network admin. And really, in this vista/xp environment, it's just easier to have the machine done for you. Just my 2 cents.

Bro outside of the video card that is a solid computer. 4gb of ddr2 ram, not the best, but still fast. Quad core processor and decent sized h/d. Apparently you don't know much about computers dude, wow doesn't use a lot of resources and a lot of guys play that game with signifigantly lower specs than what are on that computer.

he wants to play. If he wants to play he ll need a better gfx card. if he wants to change the gfx card he has to change the power suply. Its an assembler computer, which means the 300 watts powersuply is pure crap and that most of the time you cant replace it. The assembler (dell, ibm, packard bell etc) computers offer 0 evolutivity it means that once it gets too old, you have to buy a whole new desktop/tower.
All assembler computer have custom motherboards with tons of limitations. No overclocking opportunities.
99.9% of softwares/games dont require more than 2 gig of ram currently. Biggest (demanding) apps, mostly games, need 3 ghz. 4 is pretty useless right now but it might be useful in the near future.
Most computer assemblers put lof of memory in their current computers only because memory is cheaper nowadays. Not because it is needed.
Also, there is a huge difference between recommended specs on a game's box, and REAL specs needed to run the game smoothly/decently. Any nerd who's been into videos games and computers since at least one or two years knows that.
You know nothing about computers. Please, stop posting in this thread, you re misleading bigger noobs than you.
Do some more researches cause your advices suck.

I agree with the video card/power supply statement, but again we are talking about playing a game like WOW, not cod4 or crysis. If he wanted a computer for that I would recommend something better. As it is he will be able to play wow fine, but it wont be super high res.

WOW is not very graphics intensive but if he wants to play Crysis which appears to be the cutting edge right now or most FPS's he's going to need duel cards, duel chips and a good board. Not to mention good cooling and power supply etc. For 3 grand he can get a good boutique rig or even a Dell. None of this matters if he's going to surf and email. In another 6 months the only thing Dell about my current computer will be the name on the case. Computers are a raquet but graphics cards have come way down. Once u get past the motherboard, building the thing isn't that bad.

I didn't think COD4 was that bad. I played it on a laptop and it did ok. His budget is good enough he could spend more on a good sound system and HD flatscreen.

Yeah COD4 wasn't terrible, but still required a good deal of resources. I wasn't saying he was planning on playing crysis, the exact opposite. But I am building him a computer right now for under 2000.

you still have to know your stuff before customizing your computer there... but i agree if you know what to ask for, they are competitive and profesional.

not bad. how much?
power supply a bit too powerful for what's inside. Might be usefull if you had a lot of external peripherals (usb external drives for example).
wouldnt have picked an AMD / athlon motherboard though.

Okay so I just built that computer above, the only thing I left out was a case, and I think my total ended up being like 1200 dollars. That computer will play pretty much any video game out right now. Thoughts?

around 1000, I do use a couple of usb gizmos and i might add another gfx card in the future so i wanted to be sure i had enough wattage for that, better safe than sorry.
Why not AMD? I spent 50 more than what an E8400 costs and got 2 more cores. + that intel socket is dead and i7 is very expensive....bang for buck = AMD wins

amd dual or quad cores arent no intel dual or quads... intel is simply ahead in terms of cpus.
Now everything else is fine and to be honnest, considering you bought a powerful/high end cpu even if it's amd and less capable than intel in the long term use it's still good enough for everything you do with it.
price is great too. taxes included? monitor? pre-built?

Yes price includes tax and everything i listed...no monitor or keyboard etc, already have that stuff. I ordered the parts and built it myself or maybe assembled is the right word.

even with a quad processor getbig still hangs up...but you have to get a hp w2207 h monitor, that or the 20", great design, will probably be inducted in to MOMA.
Macs are for obsessive cultish types... I'd stay away. Mac users are weird.

Just make sure and get at least a va panel lcd. Tn's suck. There is a refurb 24" lcd va on tigerdirect right now for 200 dollars. Its a steal, if anyone is interested I got the link.

great deal. how long did it take you to build it up, OS installation included ?

I agree there is a great deal of advantages of getting a high-end system and building it yourself. I have done that in the past. However, for me, I prefer something simple and hard-working and very cheap. I currently have three computers running in my office at once, and 2 more in the house for others. For me, the call was simple. Three very good computers @ 400 each beats out a reallllly nice machine for $1200 or $1500.
I have an A+ certification and did build systems for a living at one time while working as a network admin. And really, in this vista/xp environment, it's just easier to have the machine done for you. Just my 2 cents.
Best advice.
Go to Best Buy, get a Dell (ignore those bagging on it - it's trendy to rip Dell now). It saves you from having to know how to put it together and maintain it. And because it's Best Buy, if something breaks, or you have a question, you can just run over with the case...Good luck with that buying online and/or building yourself.
I have a high-end Dell from Best Buy that runs perfect. I play WoW on it all the time. It was only $1500 and I added RAM. I also have a custom liquid cooled PC -- runs the same...identical ('cept the liquid cooled one gurgles/burps at times, and is loud).
You can also do the Apple thing if you're ok paying the "coolness" premium -- it plays WoW just fine too - I have a couple Mac WoW friends.
-
If you believe in Dell marketing advertisements , you obviously are part of the general public who have no clue about computers, how to optimize em and how to spend less for more.

If someone wants to play online gaming, definitely spend more and go all out. You will need it.
If someone just wants a steady work machine that'll let them do their thing, a $400 refurbished box is a good way to save money. I don't think I'd be any more efficient on a $3,000 computer than I am on a $300 box.
Further, I don't buy from Best buy - I get it online, built by some company in Arizona who builds boxes for companies. I guess it's peace of mind for me... if I have 1 supercomputer, and it crashes, I'm in trouble - it's my whole business. Rather, I like backing up everything every night. When a computer dies, I just plug in the next one, swap out backup USB wire, and start working.
-
oh and DONT BUY A MAC ,macs are for noobs ,women, homos, and if you only need a computer for work and some soft editing, a laptop is sufficient.
Great post...
Don't forget to add retards in that list
-
don't forget that branded computers come with so much bloatware making them so slow..
My computer loads windows XP in 12 seconds
Current specs
32 gig Crucial SSD (very fast)
AMD phenom
8 gigs of crucial ballistics ddr2 very price effective
1 Nvidia geforce 8800

which linux do you like? Umbuntu? I've done a bit with suse and redhat.
he sounds like a puppy linux kind of guy

I'm using gentoo right now and I really like it. I have ubuntu on my other computer and its fun but I like gentoo's capabilities a lot more.

just learn a little about computers and ull be fine

If you're going to get a Dell, go to slickdeals.net about every hour or so. They will have some excellent bargains. Sometimes you will have to jump fast before dell closes the dell.
www.slickdeals.net (http://www.slickdeals.net)
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=04&kc=65044&oc=BV3CVK2
Supposedly if you add $80 in add-ons, you get free shipping.

If i remember correctly i started at around 4pm and finished around 10, i don't just put all the stuff in there and connect the wires, i try to make it look somewhat clean, that's what takes time...+ i took 2 breaks to eat.
I connected only the simple stuff, mouse keyboard monitor and started it up and flashed bios to the latest version with a usb stick, then turned it off. I installed vista the next day, didn't take that long maybe an hour...it's installing all your favorite programs that takes time lol.
then a couple of days later i opened it up and fixed the cable management a little better.

You know windows will only use/see 3gb of ram, unless you're running 64 bit right ? ;)
