Title: Hello Chic, why did you never go to NABBA?
Post by: BEEFYHEAVYWEIGHT on February 10, 2009, 11:44:12 AM
How come Chic? You were an east coast goliath? I am sure that Bob Gruskin was in awe of you. Why didnt you go the path of the AAU and NABBA? You could have been NABBA Mr. Universe and AAU Mr. America by the mid 90's. Why didnt you go down the road of Jeff King, Victor Terra, Joe DeAngelis, Joe Meeko and the rest of the east coast greats? It is not as if you were a short man. You would have competed in the tall division. Not even the medium/tall. I want to know why?

Or were you too hell bent on competing against the Pat Lanzillo's and Richie Barretta's of the tri-state NPC kingdom?

Had Jim Manion and Jim Rockell not branched off and started the NPC...I might very well have been in those shows mentioned...but it took about 2 seconds for the NPC to establish itself and to gain in popularuty and notoriety, and it was a direct pipeline to the IFBB/ Olympia etc...

Pat Lanzillo and Richie Baretta were in a different era than I was, I was still in the teenage division when they were in their heyday

I'll tell you why! Because the AAU had the Mr. America! Every great American bodybuilder of the golden years was the AAu Mr. America. Guys like Steve Reeves, Casey Viator, Ray Mentzer, Jeff King,Tim Belknap, Gary Leonard, Clancy Ross, John Grimek, Bill Pearl, Chuck Sipes, etc.... the list goes on and on . The same goes for NABBA. Does the name Arnold ring a bell. He was the NABBA Mr. Universe, Clairemont, King Buchanon, Bertil, Etc....   While the NPC brought us to the current quagmire of today. What sounds better? Mr. America or Nationals champ? Even the IFBB dumped its Mr., Universe contest in place of the pansy name of team Universe because of its drug testing. Remember when it was the IFBB Mr. Universe?  You could have been the AAU Mr. America and had your poster size photo up on the 2nd room of Golds next to legends. The AAU Mr. America Bob Chic!!!!

That is why!

I'll tell you who faced the Rhino.  The mans name is Butch Perry from Boston. Butch beat the shit out of Jack London way back in 94 in Venice. He beat the shit out of Jack for dropping dime on many dealers. It made Jack tuck his cock up between his glutes and head back to Philly. Dont get me started on this piece of shit. The Rhino.......what a fucking joke. I know that there are still motherfuckers who would love to see if Jack has the balls to step his foot back in Vencie.

Matt Dufresne was awesome. Pete Miller was too. What about Joe DeAngelis? These guys were awesome. It was still great until 94. After that Jocellyn Pelletier could have won it.

You could have been the last. You would have been a legend. You could have bookended it.

You mean he could have won the same title as bodybuilding legends like Tracey Dorsey (1999 AAU Mr. A) and Harvey H Campbell (1998) as opposed to loser NPC USA Champs like Melvin Anthony (1999) and Dennis James (1998)?

The AAU contest was dead and buried by 2000, the year in which Bob followed in the footsteps of guys like Flex Wheeler and Chris Cormier as opposed to guys like Peter Miller and Mike Scarcella.

I think Bob made the right move, by a mile.

Thats because there wasnt anything else....had the NPC been around back in the 60's/ 70's, it would have been a different deal

you're comparing apples and oranges.   NABBA Universe was the top international contest well into the 70s, much more prestigious than the IFBB Worlds.    The NPC is just the US.

the question is why don't the top American amateurs compete internationally any more?   Don't say because the Worlds are drug tested.   Doesn't stop anyone else.

From that point, he helped me get in "muscle up" magazine and was very supportive in many of my early shows.

what kind of answer is that?  "who cares about anything outside the USofA"

the class winners of the Nationals always use to go to the Worlds.    Alq' Gurley won the Nationals in 1990, then won his class at the Worlds.

The answer is the truth...most BBers could care less about the history of the sport, and  to most BBers NOW, the 1980's is ancient history, let alone the golden era...

To aspiring BBers here in the states, they grow up with american BB, look at magazines featuring american BBers (mostly), attend shows here, etc...so yes, they really could care less about NABBA (which most of them couldnt tel you what it stands for if they've heard it at all) or anything outside the USA

Do you think a kid growing up watching baseball on TV, and aspiring to be a ball player in the MLB, cares about the Japan league?

Yeah, I agree with you!

But anyway as I wrote you before in Europe many athlete (and every bodybuilder in Hungary) are competing in other federations like NABBA, WABBA, NAC, IBFA...because for example in Hungary they have no chance to compete at the IFBB Europa or World Amateur Championship and get a fair judging. Why? Well many of the countries have zero sport diplomacy...especially in Hungary. But what is the dream of every athlete...? I think is to get an IFBB Pro card and to compete at IFBB Pro shows. But if you competed in other federations the hungarian IFBB federation won't give you the pro card if you'll want it later...

So I'm the only IFBB Pro in Hungary and many people call me stupid (on this board too of course) because they said that I'm too young, to small, not living in the US...why am I an IFBB Pro. Why? Because I want to compete in the IFBB or I won't compete at all. The IFBB Professional League was my dream and I followed it. And I'll follow it in the future too.

NAC contests are doing very well in Europe.  one of the WFF (more than one org calls themselves that) is becoming very popular, but I have yet to figure out their divisions:  Classic Bodybuilding, Performance Bodybuilding, Athletic Bodybuilding, Super Athletic Bodybuilding, and Extreme Bodybuilding, each with three height classes.  And that's just the men.

In the USA, the NPC is the premier amatuer organization and the most organized and the best.  The NPC is the way to go if you want to compete in the IFBB as an American.   Around the world, it is different, but you still want to compete in the IFBB if you want to have the most prestige, recognition and more.

I can easily answer this.  Chick is not in the same league as the legends who have emblazoned their names onto the perpetuity of History in becoming champs in those divisions.  Chick knew that he was genetically not all there, in terms of work ethic: just mediocre and in terms of drugs: over the top.  Just look at the company Chick kept and continues to keep.

The IFBB is ideal for a second stringer like Chick.  A place where ass kissing and the sacrifice of one's humanity will get you far.  So in terms of dollars and cents, Chick is a big winner with the crumbs that the Weiders have thrown him.  But BodyBuilding Immortality?  Forget about it!

And my parents would respond:  "Our son doesn't rely upon a drug habit to bolster his self image.  He doesn't work for homosexual muscle-worshipers.  He has a University Degree and makes six digits using his superior intellect."

Now what would your parents say about their son, the meathead.

I happen to like American Bodybuilding Products.  While protein supplements obviously don't offer the same instant gratification as steroids and HG, the liver and kidneys are spared.  Then again, what is so gratifying about a protruding forhead, baldness and shrunken nut syndrome.

Anyway, thanks for your inquiry.

Chick, just because you come from a background where everyone punches a clock, that doesn't mean everyone does.  If he were claiming to be a billionaire, I'd be skeptical, but earning over $100k/yr is hardly unusual.  Even if only 5% of the population earns this or better, that's 15 million people in the US alone.  How many of them do you figure have access to the internet?   ::)

Obviously Chick considers $100,000 to be a great fortune.  I think that's pretty indicative of what his earnings actually are.  From there, you have to subtract for anabolic steroids, growth hormone, insulin, ridiculous looking outfits, etc.

True, U should see NABBA Universe & World's  champions list from 1947 - 2008 (Oliva,Nubret,Pearl,Kawak,Zane,Arnold,Pearson,etc.........)!.
4 example Due Torri is the bigest pro contest in ol' Europe open to NABBA,IFBB,NAC or WABA champions.

O, by the way Sandow was originally NABBA/Health & Strenght  Mr.Universe  trophy.

Either u don't understand my point or u don't want to discuss it.of course no one wants to leave IFBB because money and fame involved with IFBB pro division.what i am trying to say that insulting, unfair and controlling behaviour of IFBB(Armature)pushing bodybuilders towards other fedrations.
your argument is not justified because IFBB exist all over the world and if an armature bodybuilder chose to compete in NABBA over IFBB it just because he feels that he will be treated respectfully and fairly in NABBA.
IFBB supporting same old thugs in most of countries from so many years who are most hated and unpopular among bodybuilding community of that country.prime example of this situation would be Paul Graham(Australia) and Paul chua.

For most of them, that's the highlight of their careers. They treat the Universe like the Olympia, because that's as good as it gets.

Remember that several IFBB pros (many of them Muslims) surrendered their IFBB pro cards to compete at the Universe, because the fame and glory (and $$$$$) they would get from their home countries, if they win, is far greater than what they'd get if they were mediocre to not-so-good pros.

The most noted case was that guy from the mid-90s, Hamdullah Ayktullu (sp?), the dude known for the riduculously shredded glutes, who gain some press after competing in the '96 Night of Champions.

In 1998, he surrendered his pro card and went to the Universe, where he won the light-heavweight and overall title, defeating his closest competition, heavyweight champ Mustafa Mohammad.

By rule, Ayktullu can never turn pro again. But, the fame and glory from his homeland that he got as Mr. Universe profitted him much more than his tenure as an IFBB pro.

Interesting that Chick has had what he considers to be a smart ass answer for all of my posts except the above one.  I guess he just ignores the ones that trouble him.
Kinda like changing your avatar from a big drugged up bodybuilder to ABB when called out.
