You could have been the last. You would have been a legend. You could have bookended it.

You mean he could have won the same title as bodybuilding legends like Tracey Dorsey (1999 AAU Mr. A) and Harvey H Campbell (1998) as opposed to loser NPC USA Champs like Melvin Anthony (1999) and Dennis James (1998)?

The AAU contest was dead and buried by 2000, the year in which Bob followed in the footsteps of guys like Flex Wheeler and Chris Cormier as opposed to guys like Peter Miller and Mike Scarcella.

I think Bob made the right move, by a mile.

I'll tell you why! Because the AAU had the Mr. America! Every great American bodybuilder of the golden years was the AAu Mr. America. Guys like Steve Reeves, Casey Viator, Ray Mentzer, Jeff King,Tim Belknap, Gary Leonard, Clancy Ross, John Grimek, Bill Pearl, Chuck Sipes, etc.... the list goes on and on . The same goes for NABBA. Does the name Arnold ring a bell. He was the NABBA Mr. Universe, Clairemont, King Buchanon, Bertil, Etc....   While the NPC brought us to the current quagmire of today. What sounds better? Mr. America or Nationals champ? Even the IFBB dumped its Mr., Universe contest in place of the pansy name of team Universe because of its drug testing. Remember when it was the IFBB Mr. Universe?  You could have been the AAU Mr. America and had your poster size photo up on the 2nd room of Golds next to legends. The AAU Mr. America Bob Chic!!!!

That is why!

Sipes never won the AAU America.

Thats because there wasnt anything else....had the NPC been around back in the 60's/ 70's, it would have been a different deal

you're comparing apples and oranges.   NABBA Universe was the top international contest well into the 70s, much more prestigious than the IFBB Worlds.    The NPC is just the US.

the question is why don't the top American amateurs compete internationally any more?   Don't say because the Worlds are drug tested.   Doesn't stop anyone else.

The answer is easy...because all the prestige is right here in the NPC with winning the USA, Nationals, N. American.

Cause Gruskin was a gay little fruit perhaps? (coughvictorterra)

HEY!!! Bob helped me get my start in this sport wayyyy back in 1983. He saw me pose at the teen Mr Philadelphia contest and came up to me after the show and told me I needed a real pair of trunks ( I was wearing a bathing suit.lol) and that i had a lot of potential!

From that point, he helped me get in "muscle up" magazine and was very supportive in many of my early shows.

Anyone know what happened to him? What hes doing now?

He took this pic of me the day after i won the NPC South Jersey in Wildwood, Nj.

what kind of answer is that?  "who cares about anything outside the USofA"

the class winners of the Nationals always use to go to the Worlds.    Alq' Gurley won the Nationals in 1990, then won his class at the Worlds.

He's the chairman of NABBA USA.  Has slowed down quite a bit because of back problems.

The answer is the truth...most BBers could care less about the history of the sport, and  to most BBers NOW, the 1980's is ancient history, let alone the golden era...

To aspiring BBers here in the states, they grow up with american BB, look at magazines featuring american BBers (mostly), attend shows here, etc...so yes, they really could care less about NABBA (which most of them couldnt tel you what it stands for if they've heard it at all) or anything outside the USA

Do you think a kid growing up watching baseball on TV, and aspiring to be a ball player in the MLB, cares about the Japan league?

Gloryhole would have been more accurate
;D

Yeah, I agree with you!

But anyway as I wrote you before in Europe many athlete (and every bodybuilder in Hungary) are competing in other federations like NABBA, WABBA, NAC, IBFA...because for example in Hungary they have no chance to compete at the IFBB Europa or World Amateur Championship and get a fair judging. Why? Well many of the countries have zero sport diplomacy...especially in Hungary. But what is the dream of every athlete...? I think is to get an IFBB Pro card and to compete at IFBB Pro shows. But if you competed in other federations the hungarian IFBB federation won't give you the pro card if you'll want it later...

So I'm the only IFBB Pro in Hungary and many people call me stupid (on this board too of course) because they said that I'm too young, to small, not living in the US...why am I an IFBB Pro. Why? Because I want to compete in the IFBB or I won't compete at all. The IFBB Professional League was my dream and I followed it. And I'll follow it in the future too.

The quality is not from the USA anymore.
Compare the world championship winners vs. the nationals winners

Peter Putnam - world class?

The answer is easy...because all the prestige is right here in the NPC with winning the USA, Nationals, N. American.

NAC contests are doing very well in Europe.  one of the WFF (more than one org calls themselves that) is becoming very popular, but I have yet to figure out their divisions:  Classic Bodybuilding, Performance Bodybuilding, Athletic Bodybuilding, Super Athletic Bodybuilding, and Extreme Bodybuilding, each with three height classes.  And that's just the men.

In the USA, the NPC is the premier amatuer organization and the most organized and the best.  The NPC is the way to go if you want to compete in the IFBB as an American.   Around the world, it is different, but you still want to compete in the IFBB if you want to have the most prestige, recognition and more.
