I'm sure this asshole cartoonist is scrambling to think of how he can tell us all we've misinterpreted the meaning ::)
-
So, doesn't mean he ok'd it ::)
a little unbelievable the paper ran it. We'll know how much Rupert cares based on what he does. Someone needs to lose their job.
-
It has to mean something else. If not that is how blatant as it gets. Im trying to find the other meaning in it. Has the guy made a statement. I know Rupert didnt ok it. But who is this cartoon mans boss and how did it make it all the way to be published
-

no doubt he's scrambling right now to come up with something so he can tell everyone we've missed the intent. I just hope he's doing his thinking in a secret service backroom waiting to be questioned.
-

Rupert is a funny guy. He know fox news is a sham and he gets paid off the shit it stirs up. He gave money to Obama's Campaign..So i know he didnt ok this. But who ever is over the paper should have known better. Unless we all arent getting what the picture really means.

I know he gave money to Hillary but I did not know he gave to Obama. No way he approves cartoons. He's above all that stuff, but some editor did. What Rupert does about it will be interesting. I'm guessing nothing.

I agree. The artist and the person who approved it to be printed.

The stimulus bill was not drafted by Obama. I think everybody knows that. However, the bill was drafted in a way that is so messy you could say it was drafted by a monkey or by a chimp.
There is an old expression "this company is run by monkeys."
In other news, a chimp attacked a woman and a police officer. So other police officers shot and killed the chimp.
Maybe the cartoon has something to do with this. Is saying "this government is run by monkeys" in bad taste? ???
-
Im a huge first Amendment guy. I dont think Imus should have been fired nor do i think Michael Richards should have had to leave the US for the black statements. But dipicting the black president as a monkey and then shooting it, man thats tough. Not sure what road to take.

big stretch. yes we all know Obama didn't sit down and write it. But we also all know very very well it was his initiative to make it happen. Even before he was president he was saying if Bush doesn't now, I'll make sure of it. Doesn't matter if there was a monkey shot. He chose to use the monkey shot with that comment. The depiction is clear, it's one monkey. If he meant congress both his style and most cartoonists would be to have written congress across the dead monkey and even if that's the intent, it's still highly unethical in the suggestion. Either way with the monkey shooting being inspiration, it's not the woman but America being attacked and they had to shoot Obama or Congress? no no no no.... Intent is at Obama here imo.

that sounds like a strecth. But i agree in the beleif that it has to be something other than the obvious.

Just a few days before he depicted Obama holding a bong and looking like a thug. That's not illegal but sure shows his anger at Obama in recent days. I didn't like what happened to Imus either, that was bs. But this is illegal imo.
-

I'm wondering how an editor or the cartoonist looks at that and doesn't say, you know, this is going to be taken as a representation of Obama by many people.

I was wondering about that. So it is illegal to show the president as a monkey with bullet holes...

Cartoonist= helluva salesman
-
If the chimp in the cartoon was meant to represent Obama, then yes, I agree that this is terrible and uncalled for. But again,
Is saying "The US government is run by monkeys", meaning it's being run by dummies in bad taste while the US has a black president?
I just want to know.
-

yes, that can be taken as a threat against the president and it's illegal. Assuming it's representing Obama and I'm really having a hard time not seeing how that was either the intent or how they could not see people would take it that way.

I'm sure that's what they'll say, but again, I'm completely in awe of how they would not look at the cartoon and know it would be taken as Obama. Really dumb move in the first days of a black president and with the racist comparison between blacks and apes/monkeys being a very long tradition. How in the hell could it not raise a big red flag in their minds?. That's why I'm leaning toward it being intent. And he may very well have done it thinking he could get away with it on the fallback that the chimp is congress. The worst taste I've seen in an American political cartoon since the 1800's

Then with this being such a sensitive issue in the US, the cartoonist might either be too dumb or he just did it on purpose.

He's been at it for a while. His past toons are highly labeled and clever. That's him being very aware of American politics for some time. I'm going with he did it on purpose ;D >:(

What do you think of this cartoon in the NY Post? Is Al Sharpton being a tad bit oversensitive? I personally think he usually is.

NEW YORK - The New York Post is standing behind a cartoon that appears to compare President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police.
The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."
But Sharpton said the Post should clarify the point it was trying to make with the cartoon, which was playing off Monday's rampage by a pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Connecticut, that left a woman severely mauled. Police ended up killing the chimp.
In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."
A story about the cartoon on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site drew hundreds of reader responses, many calling the cartoon racist and insensitive.
Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that "at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial."
Delonas, the longtime cartoonist for the Post's Page Six, is known for heavy-handed caricatures. In a cartoon from last month, an enormous Jessica Simpson dumps boyfriend Tony Romo for Ronald McDonald.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you somehow trying to insinuate that the NY Post is a less than reputable newspaper???
-
Reading the original intent i suppose its less outrageous but at first glance its completely innapropriate. The cartoonist should be smart enough to know people could have interpreted this another way. Very poor judgement.
-
Yeah poor judgement...... good enough for me. Dan-o come on man, u know full well that Fox news, the Post and I guess the WSJ are all shames because they lean rightward. Libs can't stand the popularity and ratings of Fox news.

-
No it is....Bush was made to look like curious George or Hitler all the time....

Mal, your right...despite the cartoonist's intent, the cartoon is just in very bad taste.
-

Did they show a picture of bush with 2 bullet holes in him. The Black man is a monkey is a thing that has been going on for years. this is no partisian thing. Like if there was an obama with dunce ( the cone hat) cap, i would have had no problem. But this was way out of line.
-
No but they did this, imagine if this was Obama, there would be riots.
-

I don't think the cartoonist meant to imply that the chimp represented Obama. I really don't. But was it a poorly thought-out cartoon? Definitely. Would I have made a cartoon like that? Never. Like shootfighter said, it doesn't take a genius to think it through and realize that it could be easily misconstrued.
Having said that, I think the outrage from guys like the Rev. Sharpton is misdirected. Bush was lampooned all the time and it wasn't ever a big deal and Obama is going to have to get used to the same thing--but again, I really don't think this cartoon was meant to be a jab at Obama personally. I think it was supposed to be a swipe at all of the idiots who concocted this liberal spending orgy free-for-all, a.k.a. the "Stimulus Package."
-
No but they did this, imagine if this was Obama, there would be riots.
i dont see BUSH on there. what is it about..and no matter how you slice it, this isnt a partisan thing like you try to make everything. this is a case of a dude that fucked up. Leave it that and quit trying to exuse it by making it an us against them issue.
-
Mal....sorry but the Left excused all the bs attacks on Bush, for the last 8 years. I'm doing the same for Barry.

There has always been critisism of presidents. But this could easily be viewed as more than a critisism.
-
Sure...and as an editor I would not have run the cartoon as drawn unless the monkey had a Congress name tag or something.

That film wasn't an American film first of all. And remember, many of us including myself were against the film:
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=91852.0
and Bush was never portrayed as a monkey shot down in the streets and if he had, I would have been against that bigtime.
-
although i felt the cartoon was in poor taste, the paper published an oppology to those offended by their interpretation of the cartoon. That was appropriate. I suppose the author is to tell us what he meant but still surprised it got by the editor because of how people could (and did) have interpreted it.

a weak, backhanded apology
-
Pretty dumb thing to do. The editors were pretty foolish to run this. It always amazes when really bad collective decisions like this are made. You would think someone in the room would have the brains to say, "wait a minute . . . ." ::)
-
There's new stuff on this. Apparently the editor sent Rupert a letter saying he was as shocked as anybody and the first he saw it was when everyone else did. lol.

By John Legend
Dear Editor:
I'm trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really?
Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?
If that's not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can't imagine what possible justification you have for this. I've read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It's about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.
I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I'm personally boycotting your paper and won't do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.
You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.
I'm well aware of our country's history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don't need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.
Sincerely,
John Legend
