If the chimp in the cartoon was meant to represent Obama, then yes, I agree that this is terrible and uncalled for.  But again,

Is saying "The US government is run by monkeys", meaning it's being run by dummies in bad taste while the US has a black president?

I just want to know.
I'm sure that's what they'll say, but again, I'm completely in awe of how they would not look at the cartoon and know it would be taken as Obama.  Really dumb move in the first days of a black president and with the racist comparison between blacks and apes/monkeys being a very long tradition.  How in the hell could it not raise a big red flag in their minds?.  That's why I'm leaning toward it being intent.  And he may very well have done it thinking he could get away with it on the fallback that the chimp is congress.  The worst taste I've seen in an American political cartoon since the 1800's

Then with this being such a sensitive issue in the US, the cartoonist might either be too dumb or he just did it on purpose.

He's been at it for a while.  His past toons are highly labeled and clever.  That's him being very aware of American politics for some time.  I'm going with he did it on purpose ;D   >:(

Stimulus cartoon a jab at Obama or broader swipe at gov't in general?

What do you think of this cartoon in the NY Post?  Is Al Sharpton being a tad bit oversensitive?  I personally think he usually is.

NEW YORK - The New York Post is standing behind a cartoon that appears to compare President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys."

But Sharpton said the Post should clarify the point it was trying to make with the cartoon, which was playing off Monday's rampage by a pet chimpanzee in Stamford, Connecticut, that left a woman severely mauled. Police ended up killing the chimp.

In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist."

A story about the cartoon on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site drew hundreds of reader responses, many calling the cartoon racist and insensitive.

Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that "at its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial."

Delonas, the longtime cartoonist for the Post's Page Six, is known for heavy-handed caricatures. In a cartoon from last month, an enormous Jessica Simpson dumps boyfriend Tony Romo for Ronald McDonald.

Reading the original intent i suppose its less outrageous but at first glance its completely innapropriate.  The cartoonist should be smart enough to know people could have interpreted this another way.  Very poor judgement.

Did they show a picture of bush with 2 bullet holes in him. The Black man is a monkey is a thing that has been going on for years. this is no partisian thing. Like if there was an obama with dunce ( the cone hat) cap, i would have had no problem. But this was way out of line.

I don't think the cartoonist meant to imply that the chimp represented Obama.  I really don't.  But was it a poorly thought-out cartoon?  Definitely.  Would I have made a cartoon like that?  Never.  Like shootfighter said, it doesn't take a genius to think it through and realize that it could be easily misconstrued.

Having said that, I think the outrage from guys like the Rev. Sharpton is misdirected.  Bush was lampooned all the time and it wasn't ever a big deal and Obama is going to have to get used to the same thing--but again, I really don't think this cartoon was meant to be a jab at Obama personally.  I think it was supposed to be a swipe at all of the idiots who concocted this liberal spending orgy free-for-all, a.k.a. the "Stimulus Package."
