TapouT Owner Dies in Horrific Ferrari Crash
Posted Mar 11th 2009 3:12PM by TMZ Staff
TMZ has confirmed the owner of the TapouT MMA clothing line died this morning when his ultra-rare $300,000 Ferrari crashed into a light pole, ripping the car in half.
TMZ has learned Charles Lewis Jr. -- aka "Mask" -- was driving his Ferrari Modena in Orange County, Calif. around 1:00 AM this morning when cops say it "left the roadway, hit the curb, took out a light pole."
"Mask" was declared dead at the scene. A female passenger -- who was ejected from the crash -- was taken to a local hospital, but we're told she's in bad shape.
Cops believe "Mask" was racing a guy in a Porsche at the time of the crash, and authorities have since arrested the guy they believe was driving the other car. That man -- Jeffrey David Kirby -- is being held on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

One "ultra rare" Ferrari 360 Modena circa 1999-2005, Gone, it will be missed.
It seems that all ferrari crashes always end up with the car being split in half...

Not really , he had more money than driving ability if he had the latter he'd be alive , the car was beyond his skill hence more money than talent . A car like that demands respect

Guys with lots of driving talent crash fast cars all the time. How do you know the car was beyond this guys skill? He has had super cars for many years and that night was simply not his lucky night. Cars like the 430 can lose traction even if you are doing all the right things. Oil on the road, sand -etc. Have you ever driven a supercar? If so what kind and at how fast?

Charles “Mask” Lewis, one of the founding members of the ultra-popular Tapout clothing brand, died in a car crash around 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif., according to a close friend and business partner.
Sherdog.com is awaiting confirmation from Orange County Coroner’s Office spokesman Jim Amormino.
Lewis, a star of the Versus reality TV show “Tapout,” was 45 years old.
He was announced dead at the scene of an accident believed to have involved his red Ferrari and a white Porsche, said Lt. Fox, of the Newport Beach Police Dept.
A female, who was identified as Lewis’ girlfriend by friends, was ejected from the car and rushed to Western Medical Center, where she is believed to be in stable condition.
Authorities have not been able to determine who was driving the Ferrari due to the excessive damage incurred.
The accident was not depicted as a race between cars, although the two vehicles were traveling alongside one another in the same direction on the three-lane Jamboree Road.
“The end of the accident was witnessed by one of our on-duty officers,” said Lt. Fox. “What the officer saw -- he was driving in the opposite direction –- he saw two vehicles out of control, spinning around. One, a red Ferrari hit the curb, struck a pole and broke in half.”
Lt. Fox said the officer observed a white Porsche stop at the scene and then take off a few seconds later southbound on Jamboree Road.
Skid marks were recorded at the scene, said Lt. Fox, denoting high speeds may have been involved.
A second police unit retrieved the Porsche, which also had moderate body damage, a short distance away from the accident on a side street. A man identified as Jeffery D. Kirby and a woman were observed walking away from the vehicle.
“Through an investigation of the officers, it was determined that the male was the driver of the Porsche,” said Lt. Fox.
Kirby, 51, of Costa Mesa, Calif., was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, while the unidentified female was charged with public intoxication. Kirby is being held on $1 million bail at the Newport Beach Jail.
The well-liked Lewis left an indelible mark in mixed martial arts. As one of three founding members of the “Tapout Crew,” Lewis and his partners debuted their logo in November 1997 and built a multimillion-dollar clothing business virtually from scratch, selling T-shirts out of their cars at grassroots events into the early 2000s. Lewis and his partners were noted for their dedication to the sport’s advancement, as well as their generosity as sponsors to countless MMA fighters.
Lewis also trained with many of the sport’s athletes and was anonymously featured with former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz on the cover of the UFC video game “Throwdown.”
Lewis’ alter ego, the heavily tattooed, face-painted “Mask,” was a fan favorite at events alongside his cohorts “Skyscrape” and “Punkass,” and were known for their outrageous costumes and outgoing behavior. The “Tapout” name quickly became synonymous with the sport, especially with the support it received from the UFC and numerous champion fighters.
The jet-setting trio became the subject of the “Tapout” reality TV series on Versus debuting in June 2007, where the crew toured the nation to scout out promising up-and-comers to don their brand. The series ended its second season in September 2008.
Friends have said that Lewis is survived by a brother.

Lots of guys with talent crash but they're alive to tell the tale , he's not ...he did something very stupid which is why the car is sheered in half , obviously he was going way to fast on the public roads and did something silly that he couldn't correct and he's dead and his passenger might be with him , he's owned lots of supercars doesn't mean he has talent , lots of people own great golf clubs doesn't mean they're great golfers and I highly doubt he hit an oil spill even if he did he was going way to fast to correct it which again leads back to his skill or lack there of , could I be wrong? absolutely but in all probability it was driver error , a guy can own a super car for years and still not explore the full capabilities of the car
I've personally driven a Porsche 996 Twin Turbo ( Arena red ) Viper GTS and a modded Vette which technically aren't supercars but fast cars none the less , I never drove them fast because they weren't mine so I don't have much experience there

Bro, you called a guy with a multi-million dollar company "talentless". Thats the portion of your post I found ridiculous. It's obvious that the guy was going way to fast in his 430 and that why he was killed.....but accidents can happen to anyone. It seems like you are painting this guy as some retard who had no clue how to drive his car, but I doubt you know him? For all you know he could be an excellent driver. As I said, shit happens.
I have driven many supercars (friends) and I can tell you that its VERY east to crash one at high speeds. Cars like the 430 are so powerful that they can lose traction very easily. Say you blip the gas hard in between gears on a small patch of sand.....do you know what happens? lets say you shift the wheel slightly while applying just a little to much throttle on some slick road.....do you know what happens?
A buddy of mine lost his life driving fast and he was a great driver...shit happens when you like speed.

I don't think its really the top speed that matters. I'd consider driving over 60 in a residential area with lots of curves to be more dangerous than cruising at 130 mph (I've gone this fast many times on roads in EU with coworkers in the car). Agree 100% this guy acted like a fucking asshole drag racing with someone in the car.

X, why in the world would you want to be a responsible adult? This guy was only racing in a residential neighborhood, lost control of his vehicle and killed himself, possible the passenger too. Now if that isn't the sign of responsibility, I don't know what is. ;)
The other thing that really ticks me off when you read this stuff, is what would ole Fireball have done is some poor kid was just strolling along the sidewalk? I don't wish anybody harm in that situation, but I'm glad he didn't injure anyone else. And that was just luck, nothing else.

If you like the old garden then you'll love the new one...best of both worlds...
I left MM on my own terms...couldn't take the idolotry of a lot of the regular posters over there. I'm not that serious about my internet; just looking to relieve stress and have some laughs...
-
I didn't mind MM. I sort of could say more because Massive G was annoyed w/ the same shit I was but couldn't say that. It just wasn't getting any traffic. It was boring. I haven't even looked at it in like 3 years I think.

I said he has more money than talent , what does him having a multi-million dollar company have to do with his driving talent? the car was a 360 not a 430 and I'm painting him out to be a guy driving past his capabilities and I don't think that's wrong , he was racing and lost control , that means he put pride ahead of intellect out of fear of losing a race and he paid the price , I understand this is a personal subject for you and I respect that and I fully get your point on how these cars are on a razors edge and things can happen very quickly but the trick is if something does happen you don't want it to happen on a public street in a residential area that's what race tracks are for , he killed himself injured a woman his friend is being charged all for what? a race he didn't win anyway ? there goes the multi-million dollar company I would say what he did was very foolish , he did something a truly competent driver wouldn't do he took a massive chance and came up very short , I think my point is accurate he had more money than driving talent .

wow.... if two men are racing on their own will, and one is killed, they can charge the other guy with gross vehicular manslaughter?

Mask sold some of portion of Tapout awhile ago I believe...You can bet that the new owner/owners are licking their chops with the amount of money that can be generated from this "accident"...Every Tom/Dick/and tuff guy is going to want a Mask tribute shirt/shirts...You can bet there are some people being paid off as we speak to suppress information about the true nature of this "accident"...Hopefully the guy in the porsche has a boatload of money for good lawyers because he is going to be set up to take the fall for this one :-\

It's never cool when someone dies. Dude may have spawned a cult of gym heroes and fanboys, but he was a savy businessman.

as sad as it is you are right about everything in your post, tee shirts, the porsche guy getting railroaded ect,imo though if 2 guys are racing on thier own will and someone gets hurt or killed i dont think its fair to charge the other driver with manslaughter.im a big tapout fan and i liked mask alot but its not like the other driver wanted the other driver to die,its an ego thing, the guy in the porsche was prolly just trying to impress his girl by racing the ferrari, and mask was prolly doing the same, ive had sports cars all my life and everyone who owns a sports car thinks they got the fastest car around, ego,s get people killed when your behind the wheel of a car thats built for extreme speed and performance imo.all in all noone wins in these situation, the guy in the porsche going to jail aint gonna bring mask back and im sure the guy in the porsche is prolly soaking in guilt as we speak cause hes thinking if he would have chose not to race the ferrari a man would still be alive today instead of dead, thats how i would feel anyway,r.i.p. mask

maybe Ferrari should make dumb asses pass a driving class, before you can buy one.
Well, it has been said by Ferrari handlers that the Sultan of Brunei is a Terrible driver, yet he has Ferrari F40's in more colors than the rainbow, and when he's thru with his Rolls Royces, he dumps them in the S. China Sea.

When my uncle bought his Testarossa he and my dad, me and my brother took the Bob Boudurant driving course at Ontario Raceway. Back then it was $1400. It was fun as heck. We got to chase and try to catch their driver then he had to try catch you. We had my mom 280z and we drove one of their limos. You learn some stuff but it was the fact you got to drive fast and skid and all that shit
