All machines are different. I've used ones where 10 plates feel like 5, and others where 5 feels like 12.

14teen total any more and i think it takes away from the pump and to much pressure lower back. I would rather do no lock out with 5 each side for reps

I agree. If I go super heavy i can't concentrate on my quads and I fell like I'm using my whole body to get it up

I can load up my machine to the hilt, I think it's 11 a side and get reps but I don't feel shit.

There was a guy at my old gym (about 5'5 250 fat) that would load every 45 onto the leg press, and do like two sets of calf raises, and leave all the plates on.  >:(

Just throw a 10lb plate at his nuts. Problem solved.

i usually do
set 1: 8 plates
set 2: 9
set 3: 10
set 4: 6 or 7 plates and lotsa reps

at best i have done 11 plates + 2plates on top for 8-10 reps since then my legs have had some troubles and i have not recovered and have done 8 reps with 10 plates at best, but not every time :'(

Never worn knee wraps.
Give one reason you shouldn't.

1. I've always wore knee wraps.

2. I golf.

3. If you think someone needs anymore than that to grow.........you have alot to learn.

1. Pussy.

2. Pussy.

3. So you're saying once someone reaches a specific weight in an exercise, they should stop there and never use more because they don't need it to grow?

With that theory, where do you draw the line with bodyparts?

1. Pussy.

Pussy? I started training at 12 and didn't start having knee problems (or any) until 41

2. Pussy.

Whatever

3. So you're saying once someone reaches a specific weight in an exercise, they should stop there and never use more because they don't need it to grow?

So you should keep adding weight until you hit 8000lbs?

With that theory, where do you draw the line with bodyparts?

Drugs or no drugs........because in a nutshell thats the difference!

If that is what you are capable of, why not?

On your chest workouts do you stop at half a weight you could possibly do, or do you lift closer to what you are capable of?

26 plates (13 each side) on the Nebula leg press; decent form with feet only about 8 inches apart, not too high on the platform, and for 10 reps.  By my fourth set, I'm down to only 22 plates for 10 reps.  >:(   I always use a narrow stance cause I want to emphasize the outer sweep (my inner teardrops are overdeveloped compared to my outer quad area).

I've been training legs with Leroy Davis for the last five or six weeks and we work up to 11 plates a side on the leg press. Proper form, slow controlled reps, bringing the knees right back to the chest - feet are turned slightly outwards to take the pressure off the knees. Three sets to failure. In the past when training with a former training partner I've done 15 plates a side but to be honest they were more like half or three quarter reps - it's so much better to drop the weight and crank them out properly.

Sorry - I meant three sets to failure in total for quads - we do leg extensions followed by leg press followed by either hacks or smith machine squats. We're doing about nine work sets in total for the whole workout - the first on each exercise is usually a reasonably warm-up for 12 reps, the second set is usually done for 8-9 reps with a heavy weight to failure without a spotter, and the final set on ech exercise is usually about 6 reps done to failure with spotter assist to get a few forced reps on top.

The we move onto hamstrings and calves - same principles. I've no idea what he used to do with Dorian - we switch things around a lot and I imagine that's what they used to do too.

I did legs today at temple and did a very similar routine finishing up with hack squats straight after leg press and failed at the bottom of the movement which was quite hilarious at the time, me and my training partner were resting inbetween calf raises and Leroy exclaimed to me from one of the exercise bikes "So who got crushed by the hack squat then?", I had to pipe up "That'd be me!" I'll never forget to re-rack again lol.

Alex, why do you wear boots to workout in? Are you trying to replicate Nassers 1998 look?

I was a dellusionite back then... circa '05. I loved those magnum boots.

It did help with my ankles problems.

If that is what you are capable of, why not?

On your chest workouts do you stop at half a weight you could possibly do, or do you lift closer to what you are capable of?

Depends on how I feel for that day. But I can tell you one thing, once you've reached a level of development (growth) to the point where you can't develop that bodypart any further, you don't have to kill yourself or keep going as heavy as you once were to maintain it.

I think as long as you can maintain good form, increasing the weight on any given exercise is fine. Weight should not overrule form if you train for hypertrophy.

:)

Well,if you start with leg press, that is easy.
But if you start with hamstrings ( 2 or 3 ) exercises. after that you start  your quads. squats first, then  leg press.
Can you use the same weight?
And size has nothing to do with strength.

How do you know you can't develop that body part further if you stop pushing it?

Sounds like a cop-out to me :-\

I've always trained heavy all my life up, I guarantee I've always trained harder and heavier that most (you forget who I used to train with) and for as many reps as I could get with that weight. Even with my training now, not many can keep up even though my training is drastically different. Doesn't matter if you can bench 1000 for 10 reps, squat 1500 for 20 reps, etc,etc there's a point to where you just can't get any bigger. Besides, bigger is not always better. Besides being a smartass, try using some commonsense.

So what you're saying is that you couldn't gut lifting the heavy stuff, so you switched to a lighter workout and claim it's because you physically cannot get any bigger?

It's OK Coach, everyone gets old, we understand. :)

I guarantee, you in your prime and me in mine (maybe even now) couldn't come close to my numbers in any way, shape or form and I'm not talking pound for pound. Now, pound for pound, I would have dwarfed you in quantity and quality. Doesn't matter if someone can bench 225 or 500lbs, just because someone "lifts" more doesn't they're better.

I usually post on here AFTER I take a sleeping pill. Anything could happen.. and I'd have no recollection!   :-[

Sadly I'm also an insomniac.

I don't take anything for it though.  I just suffer through the next morning.  ;D

Man I went to the gym tonight and there was like 700 lbs loaded up.  Apparently the juice heads can press that much but they can't put it away.  ::)  Sucks for the old people who will be coming in in the morining and want to leg press.

All depends on the range of motion.  If I put the back up high and my knees touch my chest with my legs barely bending I can use a ton of plates. This seems to be what 99% of gym guys do.

If the back board is down and I really bend my legs in a complete range of motion, the weight used goes down 50%.

True, I wonder what kind of ROM/back rest setting some of these 30 plate pressers are using. :-\
