SEATTLE — The Department of Homeland Security freed 27 illegal immigrants arrested during a workplace raid in February and offered them legal work permits, signaling a major departure from the immigration enforcement policy of the Bush administration.
The Feb. 24 raid of an auto parts plant in Bellingham, Wash., netted 28 illegal immigrants. While one was deported, the remaining workers were released from custody and given employment authorization documents, or EADs, in exchange for cooperating with an ongoing investigation of their employer, Yamato Engine Specialists.

The EAD is a temporary work permit most commonly given to people applying for green cards or citizenship. It usually lasts for one year, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement sources tell FOX News that these work permits will expire when the case against Yamato is closed.
Immigrant rights activists support the move and the new direction Secretary Janet Napolitano is taking the Homeland Security Department with her focus on penalizing employers rather than the immigrants themselves.
"She is crafting and the people in her department are crafting a strategy that could target some people who are abusive and manipulative as employers," said Pramila Jayapal, executive director of the Seattle-based immigrant aid group OneAmerica.
But critics say the softened policy will increase the number of illegal immigrants entering the country.
"The signal that it sends to illegal immigrants is that if you can get here, you're pretty much home free," said Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
The Bellingham raid was the first and only mass arrest of immigrants since President Obama took office and came as a shock to Napolitano, who ordered a review of the incident the day after.
"I didn't know about it beforehand," she told the House Homeland Security Committee the morning following the raid. "I want to get to the bottom of this as well."
The response from the Department of Homeland Security marks a major shift from the last years of the Bush administration, when workplace arrests of illegals were commonplace.
Criminal arrests of employers who hired illegal immigrants skyrocketed from 25 in 2002 to 1,103 in 2008. The number of deportations jumped from 485 to 5,184 over that same time period. The Obama administration has sought a freeze on immigrant arrests.
Enforcement advocates say Americans should be outraged by the government giving illegal immigrants a right to work when unemployment is so high for documented workers.
Unemployment in Whatcom County, home to the Yamato plant, has risen to 8.1 percent, and in the days after the Yamato raid, more than 150 people applied for the jobs made open by the arrests.
Immigrant groups say the release was a humane act that is keeping families together and allowing them to earn a decent living.
Secretary Napolitano is expected to soon formally announce new guidelines for workplace immigration enforcement.

Most illegal imigrants I've run across here in houston are hard working family-types who bust their ass usually on two or three jobs to support their family and pay their way, and generally commit no crimes other than not filling out Uncle Sam's paperwork while getting here. I have absolutely no problem with them. They do all of our shit jobs for us and make our city better. My problem is with the American-born kneegrows who don't work and commit most of the crime around here.

a lot of them commit crimes and do not pay taxes yet as time progresses they keep benefiting more and more from tax funded programs. i do agree with you though i despise the parasitic americans as well.

Sorry to say but socioeconomic status definitely makes them more prone to crimes and drug use (MS13, anyone??), and there's no illegal that lives the glamorous life. Their kids will be growing up in a less-than-desirable lifestyle and household, which is a situation that won't develop too many success stories to say the least. Criminals create problems for our society and cost money. Your proposal to weed out the illegals that commit crimes makes no sense, since this task is hard enough as it is among already present illegals, and citizens themselves.
You also ignored what I said about taxes. Paying them seems to be pretty fundamental to a successful society (I think the founding fathers would agree).

The whole culture of the mexican is centered around manipulating and commiting crimes to get a little ahead. Anyone who has ever been around them for any length of time knows this. This is why they have no problem whatsoever about going on full welfare, foodstamps, etc., despite having never paid any taxes in most circumstances.

most of them do not commit crimes, and they all pay sales tax, property tax through their rent, and many pay income tax if they use a fake ss number (paying money into someone else's account). for people making minimum wage, most of the tax they pay is through sales taxes. yet without a real ss number, they don't get earned income credit or other tax refunds, nor will ever get retirement benefits.

obtain an additional $20,000/year in government aid for his family of seven (five kids) on top of his....
$30,000/year salary there as a low level box cutter, stocker, shelf hand....

I love that one. Agriculture in CA is an enormous industry where the guys at the top (where I am, a collection of a few families that own and operate the farming outfits) are makings MILLIONS a year. Hundereds of thousands a month off crops like broccoli/strawberries, (much of it govt subsidies) Meanwhile, the seasonal pickers get paid minimum wage ($8.25) plus get a piece of the action if they pick more, hence their running back and forth to the truck and crop.
So let me just toss this out there: what would happen if say, "no one really wanted to go out and pick the fields" (which i seriously doubt, people would fill the void) and the world had less broccoli, spinach, strawberries?! oh and iceberg fcking lettuce! :o Its not like we really need those fruity variations to sustain life. Its not like a lack of broccoli would lead to massive dismay and famine would overtake! The restaurants might not of some crunchy iceberg to throw on your burger, but we'd get by ok i think...

This means that on the welfare rolls, both whites and asians are underrepresented by half, hispanics are slightly overreprensented, and blacks are massively overrepresented.
Looks like the cliche of "Leroy or Tamika on welfare" ain't a cliche after all, huh? Blacks are the ones on welfare disproportinate to their percentage of the population.

My purpose was to show that as a percentage of their respective populations, whites had low rates of welfare usage and blacks had high rates. I didn't feel it necessary to quote the entire US Census on the board.

Seriously, prosecute the businesses and the illegals. Napolitano was a stupid choice for DHS and I knew, having seen what she was like in AZ, that she would do this. Obama doesn't have the balls to lose votes from all the illegals with a DL. Illegals drain this country of federal aid and don't contribute enough. CA alone wastes 8+ billion dollars on illegals. That was one fifth of the overall debt in that state, not to mention all the ESL spending CA and AZ have to spend because Asians and Mexicans don't want to learn English.
