At some point in time, in order to maintain the deficit, you have to cease eating food.
Now, do you just wish to be sarcastic or actually be helpful?

Do starvation diets work for you?

I am writing the calories down now; between 1600-1700. As I understand it, one inevitably becomes hungry during a diet? Do you disagree?

If you diet at 1600 calories yeah one might get hungry. Cutting isn't rocket science - 1600 calories a day = fail.

It was calculated for me. I have a slow metabolism and little muscle mass and my maintenance is around 2200.
How many calories would you eat?

Ok your maintenance is 2200. Eat 2200.
Then create a surplus by doing cardio, weight training etc.
Do cardio 5-6 times a week. Cycle your calories 2 days 2200, 2 days 1800, 1 day 2500 etc
If you are counting calories now then you are in a good position. Eat 6 meals high protein, moderate carb and only healthy fats. Stick with starchy carbs earlier in the day, moving to fibrous carbs later on. You could try Layne Nortons method of 3.5+ hours between meals but that doesn't work for some people(i.e. people can't wait that long etc)

I agree, this may be a convenient way for some people. For other people it won't.
My advise would be to play around with all unessential factors until the most convenient way is found. The unessential factors are: meal timing and frequency, cardio vs. eating less, macro composition (beyond minimal requriements and protein intake).

Added to my post above. My point is not to eat "junk", don't do cardio, only eat one huge meal or eat a lot of sugar etc. My point is to use the unessential factors for convenience.

I have found drinking water to be helpful. It also helps to take a quick walk around the block if you can.
-
i agree with donny, eat
eat huge amount of vegetables if yu really have to eat, eat as much as you want...buy 10lbs of broccoli and start binging.. :) ...
-
air-popped popcorn with butter spray
rice-cakes
(drinking water with the two foods above, causes a sensation of fullness)
sugar-free Jello
lots of water
lots of salads/fibrous vegetables
sugar-free gum
Beleive it or not, when cravings come, brush your teeth..........really helps to curb the appetite (old school trick)
-
pussies
and a lot of it !
-
Right now I am watching my dvd of my show last yr. Watching me get my ass handed is good enough to curb my hunger!!!!
-
Any tips?
eat some more chicken
Protein Shake
A bowl of oatmeal
You shouldnt really hungry really
But Donny's advice is good, same calories added with weight training and cardio should do the job just fine.
-
diets do not work
-
I usually try to drink ice tea or water with lemon...... seems to fill me up and get my mind of food.
Sometimes I am not so disciplined though and wind up going to the drive through @ Wendy's!
-
Wes's suggestion of brushing your teeth is a really good one. 8)
Pickles and green beans are great help for me when I am starving. I like green beans because I like to take the time to pick the ends off each one of them individually and then steam them. It takes a long time, and when I am dieting, the more time I can spend preparing my food, the less time I have to sit there and obsess over it in my head.
I also like to brew up big pots of flavored teas when I am dieting. I usually drink some hot tea and refrigerate the rest of it, and I chug a huge glass of it when I am hungry or before I eat.

I never heard the one about brushing teeth before. That is certainly worth a try.
Info like this is why I still come to GetBig even when the "ownings" get to be too much. :)

1. Green Tea
2. Diet Sodas.
3. Soup with grated, raw vegetables added just before serving. Taking time to chew through it slows you down & gives the stomach time to feel full plus you get the fibre & enzymes. Just cycle brassicas & parsnips etc. to avoid interfering with nutrient absorption (Google raw food + oxalic acid ).

Any tips?
Are you trying to just lose weight or you getting ready for a contest?
If you just try to lose weight than you need to eat food that increases your Cholecystokinin(CCK) levels naturally.

Dieters have difficultes with managing their hunger while trying to lose weight. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is considert to be the best-studied endogenous satiety factor. CCK increses naturally with a meal and elicits satiety and feeling of fullness. Drink a glass of white potato juce before meals,(potato contains Proteinase inhibitor 2) which will enhance the release of CCK.

Deceide, what i say is drop your cals to 800 below maintance, maybe even 1000, eat veges when hungry, and drink lots of diet soda if you like, what helps me the most however is to have my first meal of the day at around 12.30 pm.

Chewing gum?

i dont think the potatoe juice is that great of an idea. its an interesting concept, and certainly backed with some science (it seems), however added a bunch of calories to help block hunger.... doesnt make much sense to me (adding the calories from potatoe juice).... instead id rather use a supplemental or medical hunger suppressant...

One medium potato has only 26g carbs, however if you worry about the calories than you my try to take the potato extract Slendesta(300mg before meals) or a product called OlogoSlim. I would stay away from medical hunger suppressant or stimulants.

hat [potatoe extract sounds much better. porbably standardized to a high amount of the active chemical thats effective anyway. most natural foods contain too small amount of the "good stuff"..and you end up having to take in too much food to get the desired result. for example green tea... the amount of green tea one woul have to drink in order to get a thousand mg of EGCG would be impossible t drink... however one could get 1000mg egcg from a couple of pills standardized for egcg rather easily..

Drink iced tea, if you don't like iced tea, drink water with a lemon......just for a little taste! This should help with your hunger!
-
Smoke cigarettes.
-
sugar free jello
-
Chewing gum is actually a bad idea. Chewing gum activates the salivating process which inturns starts the digestion process in the rest of your digestion tract. An since you have no food, it makes you hungry.
-
Stuff your meals with loads of veggies. Very little calories, a lot of ruffage.
-
crystal meth

crystal meth
followed by cigarettes.

chewing tobacco, coke zero, caffeine

I was wondering that too. Thinking of getting a hobby, like learning to play an instrument or something. I know it sounds silly. But I want to find a way to get my mind off cravings!
-
Another thing I do, is chew sugar free gum! When its pre-contest I freaking live on gum!

I'm gonna try that.
seriously it's work for me.
it's radical but it's work, i read this in an old flex issue, it's the eddie Robinson method.

Like many of the other members have already stated, I think the best thing to do is to eat small portions throughout the day. And maybe also eat food with "negative calories". Foods such as broccoli, asparagus, apples, cucumbers and lettuce (basically vegetables and fruits). Another thing I highly recommend doing is perhaps taking a multi-vitamin (maybe in the morning with breakfast) which can help you get all the essential vitamins and minerals that your body requires on a daily basis. Although I wouldn't suggest this but a method that has proven effective at least for me is smoking, but I really would suggest keeping this as the last option.
Hope this helps. Best of luck! :D

After eating everything I was supposed to and still feelin hungry? Take it like a man! Little room for babies in this game.
-
I would make protein shake (choc/banana/peanut butter) and put it in the freezer. Eat it frozen with a spoon. It takes longer to eat and it curb the craving for sweet. When it is closer to contest, I just make the shake with choc protein.
Brushing your teeth works
Increase your salad and vegetable intake.

When i am dieting i had my day meals done and ready to eat.
So, when i am at home and i don't work, i am doing the simplest thing for me: Playstation 3!!!

Yes I also heard about this method. Some swear by it and claim it works. For myself it helped a bit, kinda gets your mind off of food. Just don't expect it to make you feel full. :-X

Personally, I just find something else to distract myself from hunger. Movies, video games, etc,... are all good. When I am dieting, hunger and feeling of run down are indicators that my diet is working. When I eat all my food, I would be full (temporarily) for an hour or so then I am starving is an indicator that my metabolism is kicking. When I feel run down, it tells me that my weight will drop the next morning (on the scale). Either way, I use that as motivator for me.

Hope you do this anyway but brushing your teeth and tongue before bed kills the appetite.
-
I drink about 20 oz of water mixed with Splenda or Stevia.
The volume of water activates the stretch receptors in the stomach (at least, for a little while) to suppress the hunger sensation.
The sweetener satiates the tastebuds.
