Which is bullshit.
Here in Sydney, Fitness First must think they have the market cornered because they shut all their gyms today. Saves money on paying employees for public holidays. Last year they were open.
I went to city gym to train and the equipment was so much better. Fuck it i'm changing even if it is mostly gay.
-
My gym was shut today. :(
Normally we are open for a half day.
Fitness first is fucking gay........i've been to 4 different ones and they were so crowded it was nuts. My gym is mostly empty..... 8)

When i last flew to the states, we went with United Airlines, and the air stewardesses were fat, old, ugly Americans. It ruined the flight. :(
Qantas flight stewardesses are fucking hot!!

Most gyms don't understand that their members love to train. We have been packed all day while the others are sleeping.

No, but the aircraft fall apart regularly. Still, makes the flight more interesting.

its fucckin bullshit that they just "close" ::)
-
It's ruined my schedule.........that means i didn't train legs this week.
-
I think my gym is open today, going later to train legs. The only restricted opening hours today is for pubs, think they have to close at 10.30pm...

p90x doesnt' require a gym membership.. where you at foo's?

I never heard of stuff like that going on in my gym. However, I was once in City Gym in Sydney quite a few years ago and I heard stuff went on in the shower cubicles. I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. Two blokes nude in a steamy shower with glass doors. I was walking by on the way to the toilet so didn't actually see what they were doing. You could see the bodies if they were close to or touching the glass. So I guess some of that stuff does happen.
LOL
Why does Hugh Jackman train at city gym? :D

Perhaps it is only here in Ireland (the Holy Joes still try and dictate what you can and cannot do >:().

From a personal trainer point of view, FF is the worst there is. Terrible system they have.............don't know why people want to work for them. :-\

With this recession, gyms are gonna be in for a rude awakening. Under current conditions, a person would have to be crazy to sign a long-term agreement.

Tony,
Do you allow chalk and gym bags on the gym floor?

They suck balls but in Sydney they have destroyed a lot of good little gyms. I think they are a disease.
BTW.... We would love to do a gym in Sydney.

Returned and services league. Like a pub but bigger.
More for old people, but becoming more popular with younger people. Good place to have a beer and watch the footy.

Getting rid of my gym membership would be the last thing I would get rid of though. If I'm unemployed I would have nothing else to do but train (and look for work obviously). Long term contract, yes, I wouldn't sign one but I'm still going to be looking for a gym to train.
-
Tony,
Do you allow chalk and gym bags on the gym floor?
Yes, I even sell chalk at the desk.
I try not to have too many rules, most people want to be left alone, some people train to improve, others train to cope. The world is a crazy place. At our end of the market, we get busier when the economy is slow. Unemployed folks have more time to train.
-
fitness first sydney are brutal they even pay off councils to get rid of other gyms i've heard...

They bought up a lot of smaller gyms so they seem to be trying to monopolise the market. Whether this is exclusive to Sydney or not I don't know...

One good thing about Good Friday is the amount of good sport on. Going to watch some super 14 this morning, then some super league.

If someone is looking to cut back on expenses, a gym membership would be the first thing to go. It's not as though you can't stay in shape without belonging to one.

More gyms in the United States should take your example and be upfront about their rates and membership options. Many gyms and martial arts schools keep their rates a secret and then lay the hard sell on people who come by in person.
-

The one the sharks sometimes use it actually not bad. Good equipment, but very crowded at the busy times.
The other one is right on the beach , Fitness First Platinum. Went there once, just a bunch of rich housewives chatting and drinking coffee......
-

The gym is a social thing and good for stress relief. Plus you are only saving £30 a month. I can think of other ways to save that little money.

One can only hope, lol.

Where I live, Manhattan, the gyms/healthclubs can run $150-200 a month.

not many hardcore gyms left in sydney...
terrili's big one is gone but he still has a smaller one... is mitsos's one still open? tony?

Around $70 a month.
-
But surely that isn't the average cost of a gym membership?
In Manhattan, there pretty much are no hardcore gyms left. So, I'm basically talking about health clubs like Equinox. The ones in my area charge about 2K a year.
-
the gyms that charge that much know what there doing, the less the memberships fees are the less desirable members you get.

that ain't too bad... i think they were expecting to be able to get around $100 per month but they can only do that right in the city...

Indeed. ;)

Yeah, my gym is probably the cheapest in Cronulla. All the other gyms are dominated by the rich mummies.

I'm not a member of fitness first, if thats what you mean.
I think Fitness First Platinum right on Wanda Beach here in Cronulla is a couple of thousand a year. More of a health club though, so it appeals to the target demographic (rich housewives)

Nah, been there a few times. A few mates go there.
Same story though, everytime i went it was fucking packed, plus it's a bit of a hike from Cronulla.

LOL so true,
I was at Al's gym but they didn't pay their rent. I think Pete Wall was putting it all up his nose. There was nothing else left.
There are many things that piss you off about Fitness First. Sent a letter in the mail saying they would be charging $15 for a locker unless you told them differently. The pressure to join when all i went in to do was ask questions (the old line 'this counts as your first visit and we can only give this discount on your first visit').
Taken some good equipment away lately and replaced them with junk (at Al's we could shove the bar in the wall for T-Bar's like Ronnie does). Personal trainers seem to have a run of the gym. One of them some dumb ugly lesbian started loading plates onto the racks of a calf machine while i was in the middle of a set. One decent machine for hamstrings, i had to work something else out.
Anyway enough bitching, Messiah open up in Sydney. I know your 24/7 rule i would have gone their today. Every day ;)
-
Fitness first have financial issues, more than 40% of their clubs are non profitable, their accountants and lawyers are looking into the costs involved in exercising a starbucks type restructure of the company, to help make them more profitable, so some centres may close in the next 12 months.

I'd say 90% of the personal trainers at all the fitness firsts are the guys who get their qualifications at FIA (Fitness Institute of Australia). 6 weeks and you are a fully qualified personal trainer.
I've almost finished my diploma of physical fitness and good 'ol tafe and it has taken me 18 months. Tafe is a much better option for anyone serious about becoming a trainer.
-

I don't know much about Starbucks but i am guessing if they are like FF then they just opened too many stores to try and knock all the competition out.
Bunnings Warehouse does the same, i know the hardware industry and i can bet there is fuck all business to take away from their competition anyway but they keep opening stores to try and own it all when all they are doing is competiting with each other. Most of them lose money.
At the end of the day Accountants run these things, if FF isn't making money then they'll shut stores, or in the meantime not open on a Public Holiday to save. Mine was open on New Years day, i mean you can't open on New Years day then shut 3 months later on Good Friday.

Really.....
Can't say i am surprised though.........they seem to be opening new gyms everyday. Sooner or later it will have to slow down.
I heard from a mate who use to be a trainer at Fitness First that like almost 50% of their members quit within the first few months, but are still locked into their contracts. So they make a fair deal of their money off people who no longer go to the gym.

I'm at Bondi Junction and i will admit some of the guys would know what they are doing. But some are stupid, i cannot see the point of doing supersets on a beginner. They come up with this fancy shit to make out they have some advanced training.
A girl i work with uses one at the Park Street FF. Apparantly many male trainers there train female clients for 'free' if you know what i mean. She gets it too now because i told her his program was rubbish and showed her what to do so she went back to him and said she wouldn't need him. He offered to train her for free to try and screw her but i doubt she'll put out. Too busy manipulating Beta males ;).

everyone should have a basic free weight set up at home.. in case the gym is closed.
but.. some of you dont take your training that seriously.

Yep, it's bound to happen, but it just happens a hell of a lot at FF.......year round.
Same with the trainers there. If you are a trainer at FF, you have to pay rent. Every week, as a trainer, you have to pay a certain amount. Understandably, when you first start out and have limited clients, a lot of the time you are making stuff all after you pay the rent each week.
And they lock you into the contract. My mate was there for 6 months then left, so for the rest of the year he still had to pay rent.............even though he wasn't even working there!

Isn't it like $350 a week rent? Their marketing obviously gets you clients so i understand that but they do try and fuck people over every way.
Be interesting to see how many stay at FF or go out on their own in the next year when gyms start having less clients.
-
FF's problem is that they screw over both their staff and their clients so no wonder they both leave...
australia is still a small place there are only so many bridges you can burn here the population isn't as transient as the states.
I heard that the four big gyms in the sydney CBD are basically holding the whole company together btw...

Yeah, bad time for me to be trying to get into the industry i guess....... :-\ ;D
we'll see though. There's a hell of a lot of trainers around these days and cleint numbers have peaked and are falling. Time will tell i guess.....

is that the one on george st across from establishment? that place is DEAD everytime i walk past...
-
what's vision pt supposed to be like to work for webcke?
Vision is a different set up again.
Basically, they pay you a flat rate (eg $25/hr) all the time , whereas with most gyms you obviously get more (per hour) when you actually train clients.
But Vision gives you the clients and they also give you the programs. I did some workplacement with them last year as part of my course.
It's a bit easier, but you are limited in the no. of clients you can have which obviously limits your potential earnings. Probably ok for a beginner though.....
-
is that the one on george st across from establishment? that place is DEAD everytime i walk past...
Thats pretty cheap.
FF Platinum here at Cronulla was a fucking rip off. Maybe they are cheaper now too....... :-\

true that bro, i work in a gym and i have members coming up to me alot asking me if the gym is going under anytime soon, i tell them the truth, i say i dont think so and i hope not cause this is how i pay my bills. i understand thier concern cause who wants to sign up for a year or 2 only to come to the gym 3 months later and see the gym closed down
-

I heard from a mate who use to be a trainer at Fitness First that like almost 50% of their members quit within the first few months, but are still locked into their contracts. So they make a fair deal of their money off people who no longer go to the gym.
Australian government , is specifically looking into and changing contract law in the fitness industry due to the specific number of complaints lodged to department of fair trading in relation to gym contracts, Fitness First recieving the most complaints and they are using their contract in their review, as with most government things it takes time but they are on to it.
They are a shitty buisness, in most cases they have taken large premises in prime areas with expensive rents, that force them to require 4000 members to break even in a facility that in reality can only accomadate 1500 to 2000, resulting in over crowding on equipment and issues with everything from car parking to getting a shower,
The 24hour or planet fitness system in the USA is much better they would have 3 to 4 times the equipment fitness first has to cater for a similar amount of members.
-
And they lock you into the contract. My mate was there for 6 months then left, so for the rest of the year he still had to pay rent.............even though he wasn't even working there!

If you're going to be any kind of contractor, you've got to be savvy. As a rule, don't go around signing contracts. You get your lawyer to draw up contracts and you get other people to sign them. Never trust a company.
You going into the PT game then Web?

I don't know much about PTing but if you're dealing with a lot of out of shape people or rehabers who are already damaged, then there is potential liability. I'd hate to see you get sued by some dickhead who drops a dumbell on his toe. Please look into liability concerns and what you can do to protect yourself before jumping into the contracting game. Don't forget too that you'll be dealing with paperwork and accounting, insurances, advertising, networking, and scheduling, debt collection, no paid holidays, sick days, or super, on and on.... Unless you're confident that you'll be making very good money, keep the idea of a wages job as a possibility imo.
Fuck that was dad-like. Sorry man. :D

Thanks, Dad. 8)
Honestly, i am still unsure as to exactly what route i will take.
I will start off with an already established company anyway. Starting my own business may be a possibility down the road. Unfortunately i'm getting into the industry at the worst time. The industry peaked a few years ago and is now gradually coming down. A lot more trainers out there now and less and less clients from most reports it seems.
I'll most likely follow in mummy and daddies footsteps and go into Real Estate anyway.......... ;D

Virginactive have done a lot of market research in Australia and decided not to offer term memberships. You pay a joining fee and then $45/fortnight. That is quite cheap for what they offer. The company tries to give everyone positive experiences from attending or being a member and they will be a force in the Australian fitness scene.
Muscleheads always want to train everyday. When I took over the West Ryde Ballbell club in 1971 I remember I was open on both Christmas Eve and NYE. Now we close on public holidays like most Australian businesses. Or we open for a few hours during the day.
Virginactive were open on Good Friday and will be open on Easter Sunday. They have a going concern there and will be expanding in Sydney and Melbourne this year. Guys doing PT might want to try working for them. I advise those wanting a career in the gym business to do sales/instruction. More money there and you can work anywhere in the world if you can sell or do marketing.
We have a hard core/fitness club but most modern clubs try to discourage muscleheads.

i keep my gym open every day but Christmas.

fuck gym contracts.. those gyms will rip you off.
Back in the day when I worked as a trainer for a large NYC gym, they used to sue people all the time over contracts.
Like people don't have enough problems in everyday life without having to deal with aggravation over a stupid gym contract.
IMO, under no circumstances should anyone ever sign a contract with a gym or a martial arts school for services that have yet to be rendered.
