He was robbed in that Olympia 1983,look on youtube for the decision footage,the crowd go mental when he is put in 5th place
Some people said it was because he was English (kinda) and the olympia was in germany that year,who knows
He faded after the 1984 olympia and soon after was pretty much out of competative bodybuilding

His wife said something to the effect that Bertil wasn't good enough to beat 180 pound bodybuilders like Zane and that's why he got 5th. Bertil lost it pulled out a gun and blew her away. Then the mother screamed at him, "Why did you do that..you freakin' monkey..Shit you couldn't even beat Makkawy and he was only 150 pounds...Loser!!" Of course he shot her as well.

Ya he deserved to win in 83, without a doubt got screwed. Weider factors personality in to the scoring without admitting it, which turned out to be a good decision in this case!

Ya his best would have been a little more cut like he was a few years earlier, but even so should've won in 83-he was as or more cut than Samir, with more size and balance and deserved to win.

They were still in the era of refinement, of which the likes of Dickerson, Zane and Bannout had much more. And the 3 aformentioned were far more eloquent than Bertil=better spokesmen. Competing in NABBA all those years did not help Bertil, either.

Bertil had a freaky upper body, but narrow clavicles and straight up and down legs. His thighs were pretty lackluster, especially next to Samir's crazy-deep separation in his legs. Bertil could have been second for sure, but he lacked the hardness and the overall balance of Samir. Bannout deserved it in '83.

wasnt the winner in 83, but 5th was unfair. Those judges eventually drove him to kill.

I would have had no problems with Bertil winning it all in 1983. Fifth place was ridiculous. Second place at worst I would say. I have no major qualms with Samir winning it that year since he had superior conditioning and his back poses were arguably better. I could have tolerated Lee Haney beating him, although I would have disagreed with it [as I disagreed with Lee Labrada beating Mike Christian in 1987]. Fifth place was an injustice in my opinion though.

The front half of his physique was Olympia worthy, just half a physique though. Dude had probably the worst back onstage so it's hard to give him first place in any of these line-ups.

Yes he is,but he had trouble pulling both his lats out in that show,the contest report in Bodybuilding Monthly said this very thing.The b/w pic you posted is from 1980 WABBA World when he placed 2nd behind Sergio, and you can see there that his rear lat spread was not all that good.The colour pic you posted is from the 87 Olympia,5 years later on from the one i posted.

It was his second IFBB show,he placed 5th in a Grand Prix the previous year,and he over dieted to get the ripped look the IFBB tended to favour,and i think that hindered his ability to hit the pose correctly.I`ve found this other pic from that show,look at how he hits the side chest,one foot placed behind,the hand of the flexed arm is on top instead of below.Now compare that side chest to this one from 1980.
